The Mets (89-67) completed the sweep of the Cincinnati Reds (63-92) today at Great American Ballpark by a score of 8-1.

Pitching:

Jacob deGrom dominated the Reds this afternoon, as he allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out nine, and didn’t walk a batter. With the win, deGrom improves to 14-8 on the season.

Erik Goeddel, who is quietly having a very nice season out of the bullpen for the Mets, pitched a clean seventh inning in relief of deGrom.

Sean Gilmartin and Bobby Parnell combined to pitch the eighth and ninth innings, and shut the door, as they kept the Reds at bay and secured the sweep.

Offense:

For the series finale, Terry Collins ran out what many fans called a “hangover lineup.” All the regulars got the day off except for Michael Conforto, but it wouldn’t make a difference, as the Mets exploded for eight runs in rout of the Reds.

The Mets practiced the well known baseball formula of “score early and score often,” as they put up eight runs, and got contributions from every one.

In the first inning, Kelly Johnson reached base on an infield single, then came around to score on a double from Michael Conforto.

Then in the second inning, Eric Campbell singled and was promptly driven in on a two-run shot from Dilson Herrera.

In the third inning, Jacob deGrom helped his own cause as he came to the plate with the bases juiced, and dunked a ball into left field to plate two, and put the Mets up 5-0.

In the fifth inning, Jacob deGrom was able to put across another run, as he reached on an error, which allowed Eric Campbell to score.

The Mets tacked on another run the very next at bat, as Juan Lagares drove in a run with a single.

Kevin Plawecki then put the icing on the cake, as he slammed a solo shot in the sixth inning, which would be more than enough to complete the sweep of the Reds.

On deck:

The Mets are off tomorrow, but will travel to Philadelphia for a three game series with the Phillies starting Tuesday. Bartolo Colon (14-12, 4.15 ERA) gets the ball for the opener, and will take on David Buchanan (2-9, 7.96 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
