steven matz 2

Las Vegas (13-8) 7, Reno 2

Steven Matz gave up a run in the first inning but after that he was absolutely dominant striking out 12 over 7 innings including the last five hitters he faced. Matz allowed five hits, two walks, and threw 101 pitches with 70 of them being for strikes. Here is video of his career best 12th K. Matz was sitting at 94-95 MPH on his fastball most of the night which accounted for 9 of his strikeouts including the last one on pitch #101 that was 94. In 5 games Matz has no thrown 29.1 innings giving up only 6 runs on 18 hits and 14 walks while striking out 31. His ERA is now at 1.84, WHIP at 1.09, and the Pacific Coast Hitters League is batting a minuscule .184 against him. Gee was great in his last outing but with Montero now on the DL it looks like Matz is readying himself for the next call-up. Of course the other big news on the night is that the Mets finally called up the scorching hot Dilson Herrera who was pulled in the bottom of the third to head to NY. I think Dilson’s stay in with the Mets will really depend on how he hits and how Murphy is hitting. Herrera isn’t being called up to be a bench player giving him a short time to impress the Mets brass before David Wright is back. Danny Muno had a great night in his return to the 51’s going reached base four times with two doubles, scored twice, and knocked in a run. Johnny Monell continued his torrid start hitting his 4th homerun of the season and is now hitting .421 over the last 10 games. Matt Reynolds had an off night finishing with the dreaded golden sombrero and being passed up for a promotion despite Flores extreme struggles at SS right now. Box ScoreLas Vegas takes on Reno tonight at 10:05 ET with Matt Bowman on the mound looking for to extend the 51’s win streak to 8 games.

Binghamton (12-8) was off and will head home to host New Hampshire at 7:05 with Gabriel Ynoa on the mound. Sandy Alderson said Brandon Nimmo could return from his “knee pinch” possibly as early as tonight.

St. Lucie (11-10) 9, Bradenton 2

Marcos Molina was good enough to pick up his first win of the season throwing 6 innings giving up two runs on eight hits, two balks, and a walk. Molina struck out six on the night and lowered his ERA to 3.27 needing only 86 pitches to complete his night. MMO interviewee Kyle Regnault pitched two perfect innings of relief striking out two and has allowed only one run on nine baserunners giving him a sparkling 0.82 ERA. Matt Oberste was the offensive star on the night hitting a 9th innings grand slam to go with his two other hits and RBI’s. Oberste is playing basically everyday now with Dom Smith out and now has 14 RBI on the year. Michael Conforto busted out of his mini slump collecting two hits on the night and did not strike out in five at bats. Jeff McNeil had two more hits giving him 8 multi-hit games over his 9 game hitting streak in which he has gone 18-38 at the plate. Catcher Colton Plaia reached base three times (1B, 2 BB’s) scoring two runs and knocking in one. Plaia is now hitting .304/.364/.522 in the early going and has 10 RBI while catching 10 games. Box ScoreThe Mets are back at it tonight with Logan Taylor on the mound at 6:30.

Delmarva 7, Savannah (7-13) 6

The Sand Gnats had a 6-4 lead heading to the top of the 9th with Shane Bay coming in to get the save but he gave up a three-run double Cameron Kneeland giving Delmarva the lead. Savannah had a chance to win in the bottom half with the bases loaded with two outs but Jon Leroux grounded out to 2nd to end the game. Luis Guillorme was slid back to the 8 hole for some reason but didn’t let it affect him going 2-4 with a RBI boosting his average up to .318. Wuilmer Becerra went 1-4 scoring two runs with his 3rd double and his 5th steal of the season. Jean Rodriguez was moved up to hit 2nd and responded by going 2-5 with a RBI raising his average to .296 but has walked only once. Brad Wieck got his 4th start of the season but struggled through 4 innings allowing four runs on ten baserunners and striking out six. Lefty David Roseboom was fantastic in relief pitching four innings of shutout ball striking out four and gave up just one hit. The 17th round pick from last year now has a 0.71 ERA and 0.55 WHIP on the season. Box ScoreSavannah host Lakewood tonight at 7:05 with Casey Meisner on the mound.
