travis d'arnaudLast night in Cincinnati the Mets offense did something they haven’t done all season. They scored 14 runs. The most runs they had scored this season had been 12 back in May against the Yankees. Last night, David Wright and Travis d’Arnaud led the Mets to 14 runs on 18 hits. That included five home runs.

It’s rare to see this Mets team scoring runs the way they did last night. It seemed as if the bats just came alive, fueled by early hits from d’Arnaud and Wright. Curtis Granderson‘s double in the first inning is what really set things in motion. It was a perfectly placed 2-out double which went to left field, a place he rarely visits.

From there the party was on. d’Arnaud hit a 3-run home run in the 4th, Wilmer Flores hit a monster shot in the 5th, Granderson matched d’Arnaud with a 3-run home run of his own in the 6th. It didn’t stop there. With the Mets already up big, Dilson Herrera hit his 2nd major league home run in the 8th and Lucas Duda finished the game off with his 27th home run in the 9th.

It was all very impressive and nice to see. Far too often, the Mets bats seem completely lifeless. Baseball is a game of momentum and things like this are important in the grand scheme of things. Every player from Granderson to Herrera needs to know that these innings are possible and for the pitchers it’s even more important.

Mets pitchers deal with a huge disadvantage when they take the mound. The Mets offense ranks 26th in Major League Baseball with just 3.84 runs scored per game. It’s on the pitchers to walk the tightrope and keep the team in games. Friday night showed the pitchers that sometimes the offense is capable of picking the team up.

d’Arnaud has been incredible as of late. He finished the night going 3 for 4 with 4 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. He now has his average up to .243 and is proving that he can hit consistently at the big league level. For what it’s worth, Granderson batted 6th last night while d’Arnaud filled the spot behind Duda. Wright went 4 for 5 with his 29th double of the season.

This was a fantastic win for the Mets and a really fun game to watch. Everyone was hitting, from the young kids to the struggling veterans. Everyone had a hand in getting Bartolo Colon his 13th win of the season.
