Is Matt den Dekker 2015’s Left Fielder?
It’s rather funny that in my last post this morning, I speculated that the Mets lacked the financial resources and flexibility to address the left field and shortstop holes via free agency, and then I came across this quote:
On whether adding a shortstop and another bat in the outfield will be priorities for the big-league club in the off-season:
“Right now, part of what we need to do is assess what we have. If you look at shortstop, (Wilmer) Flores has actually done a very nice job for us at shortstop. (Matt) Reynolds has played well at short, both here and at Triple-A. Den Dekker had an excellent season at Triple-A. So we’ve got to assess what we have before we start going out and canvasing the free-agent market. Free-agents aren’t always the solution.”
The quote comes from an interview with Sandy Alderson conducted by Lynn Worthy of the Press & Sun-Bulletin on Wednesday night.
I don’t expect the Mets to dabble much in free agency. nor will they trade for anything other than more prospects who could be years away. Main priorities will include unloading Daniel Murphy who they can’t afford, and moving one or two pitchers from a group of Bartolo Colon, Jon Niese and Dillon Gee to pick up some cash to cover raises.
This does bode well for Wilmer Flores who is suddenly being looked at in a much more positive light by the front office these days.
