On Wednesday afternoon the Mets wrapped up a three game series with the Atlanta Braves. After winning game one of the series, the Mets dropped the next two, both games marked by bad starting pitching. The good news is, the Mets finish a very tough six game road trip at 3-3 (You could say, 3 Up and 3 Down).
3 Up:
Dillon Gee: Gee pitched a fantastic game Monday night going 7 innings while giving up one run and scattering four hits. Gee even had time to stop and talk with Kevin Burkhardt after leaving the game and was oozing with confidence. Gee looked great, now if he would only shave off that silly looking beard he’d be the real deal.
Ike Davis: I think after these three games, we can say Ike Davis is back. Ike hit two homers in the series, the big one being a three run game changer on Monday night. When Davis hits a homerun, the ball really travels. I hope he hits the Shea Bridge against the Giants this weekend.
Bay’s Catch: Monday night Jason Bay should have been wearing a stocking mask for the way he robbed Jack Wilson of a home run. If you missed the catch, its posted here on MMO, but believe me it was spectacular.
3 Down:
Johan’s Poor Start: On Tuesday Johan Santana delivered the shortest outing of his career, lasting only 1 1/3 innings. He gave up six runs (four earned), and four hits. It was U-G-L-Y. If there is any good news to be had, Johan wasn’t pitching in pain, and let’s hope he gets back at it next week at Citifield.
Dickey’s Poor Start: Maybe it was the damp weather on Wednesday afternoon, but R.A. Dickey’s knuckler wasn’t knuckling. Dickey lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits. So numbers 1 & 2 in the starting rotation don’t even have six innings between them in their last two starts. Not good. 🙁
12:00 PM Starting Time: I’m not a big fan of afternoon baseball during the week. I know proponents will say it gives the players a chance to travel and rest before their next game, but Puh-Leeze. These guys aren’t choir boys. First off, baseball is a business. The owners need to guarantee the largest audience possible. Noon on Wednesday afternoon doesn’t achieve that. It seemed to me as if both the Braves & Mets may have been a little tired from the night before. For two teams that pride themselves on pitching, both starters on Wednesday were bad.
The Giants are in this weekend for a four game wrap around series. The Giants are another team with good starting pitching, so the Mets will have their hands full. It will also be nice to see Angel Pagan back in centerfield, even its for the Giants. As usual, LETS GO METS!!
