1. Sandy’s Working On 2018

We can dicker about what type of player Merandy Gonzalez or Ricardo Cespedes will be. We can argue whether it was wise parting with them for AJ Ramos.

What can’t be argued is Sandy Alderson has already addressed a significant need for the 2018 Mets.

The bullpen was a mess and the team has parted ways with Addison Reed. He needs to be replaced, and the Mets may need two or three guys behind him.

Ramos is a good start. More than that, it’s a sign the Mets view the 2018 season as one in which they can win a World Series.

2. Rosario Up, Smith Pounding At Door

The Mets were waiting until after the trade deadline before calling up Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith because they were waiting to clear a path for them.

Well, Lucas Duda is a Ray, and Jose Reyes had to leave Sunday’s game after getting hit by pitch. The path is clear. Rosario has been called up and Smith is gnawing at his heels.

In July, Smith is hitting .400/.447/.752 with 13 doubles, eight homers, and 26 RBI. Rosario is hitting .391/.419/.478 with four doubles, a triple, nine RBI, and five stolen bases.

With no one standing in their way and the way they are playing, Mets fans will get what they have wanted all season – Rosario and Smith in a Mets uniform.

3. Flores Hitting Again

With the Mets in a state of flux, and T.J. Rivera likely done for the year with a torn UCL, Wilmer Flores is going to have a chance to get plenty of playing time down the stretch.

While we’ve seen glimpses from Flores over the past three years, he’s yet to fully put it all together.

So far, he’s off to a good start. In the series against the Mariners, Flores was 4-for-10 with two runs, a double and two RBI.

During the West Coast trip, he’s 10-for-34 with six runs, two doubles, three homers, and five RBI.

If he continues hitting this way, he’s going to force the Mets to truly consider him for a larger role in 2018.

3 DOWN

1. Addison Reed Has Played His Last Game as a Met

With the trade deadline now behind us, the Mets kept a few players whose names have been floated around, but shipped Addison Reed up to Boston. When the Mets take the field on Tuesday night, there will be a much different complexion to this Mets team.

Yes, the roster shakeup was needed, and it will be good to get some prospects in here who could lead the Mets to their next World Series title.

Plus, August will likely see some other Mets switching uniforms

2. Edgin Must’ve Been at Fault

With the Ramos acquisition, the Mets needed to clear space for him on the major league roster. What the Mets didn’t need to do was clear space on the 40-man roster.

Despite that, the Mets decided to designate Josh Edgin for assignment.

The Mets chose this option over demoting Josh Smoker or Erik Goeddel. If they wanted to designate someone for assignment, Fernando Salas was more than deserving with his 6.05 ERA.

Instead, the team opted to part with Edgin who has stranded 30 inherited runners this year, which is the third most in the majors.

The Mets were justly rewarded for their decision on Sunday with both Smoker and Salas allowing runs.

3. Apparently Sunday Is a Day of Rest

The Mets struggles on Sundays are well documented. Well, things got even worse in July.

The Mets lost all five Sunday games by a combined score of 38-8. The latest was a completely uncompetitive 9-1 loss at the hands of the Mariners.
