3 Up

1. Unreal Neil

If there was any doubt whatsoever of whether or not Neil Walker could step up in replacing Daniel Murphy, that has quickly been erased. Walker is on a tear right now, and after hitting a game winning two-run HR in the opener on Monday night, he went on to hit his ninth HR last night in the finale. Walker is now tied for the league lead in home runs, and is second in the league in RBI amongst second baseman. He is currently tied with Dave Kingman, Carlos Delgado, and John Buck for the most home runs in the month of April as a Met.

2. Yo Knows

You couldn’t have scripted it any better. In his first at bat in four days and the Mets down by three in the bottom of the 7th inning of Tuesday night’s game, Yoenis Cespedes launched a game-tying three-run home run to help guide the Mets to a 4-3 win. Just 72 hours prior to his pinch hit at-bat, Cespedes had gotten his leg drained of fluid. It was his first pinch-hit home run of his five year career, and it’s one we will remember throughout the course of the season. I guess you could say he has a flair for the dramatic.

3. The Pen Is Mightier

Throughout the three game set against the Reds, the Mets bullpen was just about as good as it gets. They combined to pitch a total of 9 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out 12 batters. In Tuesday night’s game especially, they were able to shut the door after the Mets fought back to take the lead late in the game. With the starting pitching being as strong as it’s been, the Mets will have a hard time losing if the bullpen keeps this up.

3 Down

1. Not So Sharp Bart

He wasn’t terrible, but he also wasn’t too good either. In his fifth start of the season Bartolo Colon struggled through five innings, allowing eight hits and three runs, including a two-run HR to Ivan De Jesus Jr., who came into the game batting just .087. It was his first hiccup of the season, and the first time he truly labored, but certainly nothing to get bent out of shape about.

2. Wright’s K’s Adding Up

Coming into the season, we weren’t quite sure of what to expect from David Wright with his ailing back. So far in the early going it’s been a bit of an up and down season for him. Currently, Wright is batting just .239 with two home runs and five RBI, but what’s more alarming is the number of strikeouts he’s had. In his last seven games, Wright has struck out a total of 15 times, including four this series. He is now fourth in the entire league in strikeouts with 28. Just four behind the league lead.

3. D’Arnaud to DL

It didn’t take long for catcher Travis d’Arnaud to make his way on to the 15 day DL again this year. The Mets placed him there on Tuesday with a right rotator cuff strain. He came out of the game on Monday night with shoulder discomfort. As you’ll recall last year, d’Arnaud found himself on the disabled list twice, and has had trouble staying healthy since becoming a Met. Although he doesn’t feel as though it’s too serious, the Mets felt it was smart to place him on the list and give him time to heal it. Hopefully this is the last time we will see him on the DL.
