Game 1: Texas Rangers vs. Tampa Bay Rays, 3:08 PM, ABC

Pitching matchup: Jordan Montgomery (10-11, 3.30 ERA) vs. Tyler Glasnow (10-7, 3.53 ERA)

The best matchup of the Wild Card round—at least record-wise—kicks off the 2023 playoff slate. Both teams started off the year ridiculously hot but lost their division leads to the Astros and Orioles, respectively.

The Rangers have one of the highest-powered offenses in the game, and the Rays have one of the best pitching staffs. This series should be fun. The winner will play the Orioles.

Game 1: Toronto Blue Jays at Minnesota Twins, 4:38 PM, ESPN

Pitching matchup: Kevin Gausman (12-9, 3.16 ERA) vs. Pablo López (11-8, 3.66 ERA)

The other AL Wild Card matchup is the Blue Jays and Twins—and a pretty good pitching matchup, too, between Kevin Gausman and Pablo López.

Once the Guardians decided to sell at the deadline, the Twins cakewalked to the AL Central crown. Their 87 wins, though, are the least of any AL team in the playoffs. Facing the Blue Jays, though, they’re about as evenly matched as they come. Quality offenses with some of the best pitching staffs in the majors.

The winner will play the Houston Astros next series.

Game 1: Arizona Diamondbacks at Milwaukee Brewers, 7:08 PM, ESPN 2

Pitching matchup: Brandon Pfaadt (3-9, 5.72 ERA) vs. Corbin Burnes (10-8, 3.39 ERA)

The Diamondbacks are in a tough spot to start the series, needing to throw rookie Brandon Pfaadt in Game 1 of their Wild Card series. Though the rookie has pitched far better since getting recalled to the majors in July, they had to use their best pitchers—Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly—in the final series of the season. Despite getting swept, they secured the final seed in the NL playoffs thanks to the Chicago Cubs blowing multiple leads. Their strong, young offense—led by Corbin Carroll—will look to lead them this series.

The NL Central champion Brewers will toss their ace, Corbin Burnes, in Game 1 as they look to jump out to an early series lead. Former Met Mark Canha has boosted the team’s offense in the final two months, highlighted by multiple game-winning hits.

The winner of the series will play the Dodgers in the NL Division Series.

Game 1: Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies, 8:08 PM, ESPN

Pitching matchup: Jesus Luzardo  (10-9, 3.63 ERA) vs. Zack Wheeler (13-6, 3.61 ERA)

NL East foes will face off in this Wild Card series.

The Phillies are a far more balanced team with above average offense and pitching. The Marlins, though, will be led by their staff, as their offense scored the lowest number of runs than any playoff team (26th in MLB). This year, the Marlins bested the Phillies seven times out of 13 and were pretty evenly matched all year. They played in five one-run games and four two-run games.

To keep the NL East theme going, the winner will play the Atlanta Braves.
