When I was a kid, there was nothing like the feeling I got when the local candy store busted out the new edition of Topps Baseball Cards. I couldn’t wait to start tearing open those waxpacks, tossing out the gum and desperately start thumbing through them all hoping to find a Met. Five bucks and ten waxpacks later, I’d be lucky if had 5-6 Mets baseball cards – and that included doubles – I hated doubles! Know the feeling?
I was a team collector and the fun of it for me was hand collating my own Mets team sets. What’s that you ask? Oh, yes, I still have them.
Topps has already released their 2013 Series 1 baseball cards for the year, and my first reaction to seeing them was… Total bummer!
When the Mets tweeted the Ike Davis card this week, I decided to do some exploring to find out which Mets made the cut.
What a shock… No Josh Edgin, no Matt Harvey, and no David Wright… And as for their rookie card, no Zack Wheeler! Really?

Here they are and right off the bat, I gotta say I love the Kirk Nieuwenhuis card where he’s making a diving grab. For some reason unbeknownst to me, I’ve always had a fondness for horizontal cards going all the way back to that classic 1971 set with the black borders – remember the Tommie Agee and Bud Harrelson cards?
I expected a Johan Santana card, but how about something a little bit more special in light of his no-hitter? Maybe a gold foil name instead of silver like the rest of the cast.

I don’t buy cards anymore and stopped collecting years ago, but I bet if I ran to the store to pick up a pack today, the first Met I’d get is Jason Bay… I was never lucky when it came to buying cards by the pack, but it was worth it just for the smell of them… Those were the good ol’ days.
