One of the best westerns of all-time is ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.’ In one scene, Tuco, played by Eli Wallach, is getting the hell beat out of him by a soldier who is nearly three times his size. Beaten, injured and demoralized the bloody Tuco looks up at his assailant and speaks the words, “I like big men like you. When you fall you make more noise.” This reminds me of the […]
On Thursday, Jerry Manuel unveiled his plan that he would bat Jose Reyes in the third spot spot of the lineup, at least until Carlos Beltran re-joins the team. Yesterday, Reyes was all gung-ho for the idea. “Whatever is best for the team, I’m going to do it,” Reyes said. “Manuel is the boss. Whatever he says, I’ll do it. I just want to get back on the field.” He’s such a good soldier… Mike Jacobs […]
I knew I wanted to write something about the Mets’ starting rotation after reading an article in The Sporting News about the Mets being one of this off-season’s “losers,” citing the fact that they did not address the “gaping holes” in the starting pitching rotation. Well, yeah, but we are likely going to go into the 2010 season with a starting staff of Johan Santana, John Maine, Mike Pelfrey, Ollie Perez and Fernando Nieve. And […]
Pitchers and catchers are arriving in Port St. Lucie, workouts will be starting shortly and soon exhibition games will be played in Florida. The Mets will be trying to erase the 2009 season and focus on winning in 2010. There a lot of question marks coming into the 2010 season for the Mets such as their rotation after Johan Santana, Daniel Murphy’s ability to be a productive 1st baseman both offensively and defensively, Luis Castillo […]
Any day now, pitchers and catchers will begin reporting to spring training all across Florida and Arizona. In a few weeks, all teams, including our Mets, will begin their spring training games, and then less than two months from now, Johan Santana will likely be throwing the first live pitch for the Mets since last October. Usually around this time of year, once the Super Bowl has been played and sports docket is less than […]
Just once in the past six months would I like to sit down and write something positive, uplifting, and glorious about the Mets. However, this organization will not let that happen. Between their informal “mini-camp,” to the newsreels of Jose’ Reyes running full tilt at some fitness center on Long Island, they should be handing out barf bags to all their fans. What do they take the faithful out to be gullible mindless saps? Any […]
Occasionally, all of us become downtrodden, pessimistic, and critical of the Mets. Even the most faithful and patient Met fans have problems with this. We vacillate between positive and negative storylines and opinions in our comments, our radio calls, our blog writing and reporting. I’d like to take a positive look at what the Mets have done and give hope to all of us for 2010… The need for good health takes precedent over all […]
We all share great memories of 1986. One that stands out for me was actually the pre-game show prior to Game 7. Red Sox 2nd basemen Marty Barrett was being interviewed. The reporter asked him if he felt confident the Sox could overcome the Mets miraculous comeback in Game 6. Barrett answered eloquently, in a politically correct way as athletes often do. Then at the end of the interview he added the comment, ‘We should […]
Check out this beautiful photograph of Johan Santana by Adam Rubin of the Daly News. (via The Ropolitans) Despite all the ups and downs, and ranting and raving of this never-ending off season, you look at a photo like that and everything else almost seems to melt away. Santana after his pitching session, “This is big for me. I feel very happy I’m very excited about this season.” Adam reports that Santana threw 24 pitches and […]
