Is Johan Santana Besting 1969 Tom Seaver?

Ask any Mets fan who the greatest pitcher in franchise history is, and without hesitation they’ll say Tom Seaver. Ask that same fan what season was Seaver’s greatest and most likely they’ll say it was 1969 when he compiled a 25-7 record while leading the Mets to their first World Series title. After being treated to another scintillating performance by Johan Santana last night, I felt like we weren’t just witnessing a pitcher on the [...]

Santana Shuts Down Phillies, Mets Win 1-0

Game Summary In yet another spectacular performance, Johan Santana dazzled a packed house at Citi Field by combining with Pedro Feliciano and Francisco Rodriguez on a 3 hit shutout of the Phillies on Wednesday night. It was a classic pitchers duel with the lone run being scored by Carlos Delgado thanks to a throwing error by Pedro Feliz. Mets Pitching Johan Santana was absolutely brilliant and improved his record to 4-1. Fresh off of winning his [...]

Johan Santana Wins Pitcher of the Month

According to a press release by the New York Mets, left-hander Johan Santana has been elected National League Pitcher of the Month for April after going 3-1 with an ERA of 1.10 in the season’s opening month. Santana was the portrait of consistency in five starts, never allowing more than two runs and always striking out at least seven. He finished the month with 44 whiffs in 32 2/3 innings, with a pair of double-digit [...]

The Idiot’s Guide To Citi Field

(Author’s note: This is just one man’s unbiased, impartial view of Citi Field. In no way am I implying that I am speaking for all Mets fans. Just my thoughts) After surviving a brutally cold winter in the northeast, last Sunday was one of those beautiful spring days that made it all worth it. Upon waking up, I decided that rather than doing the original productive things I had planned, namely sitting around and watching [...]

Not So Random Thoughts – 3 Year Decline

As far as the Mets are concerned April is now over and they find themselves in 4th place with a 9-12 record, closer to last place than first. Not exactly the beginning we all envisioned after overhauling our bullpen and adding a few role players to our bench. In 2008 the Mets found themselves at 14-12, 15-9 in 2007, and they finished the month with a 16-8 record in 2006. Notice any trends? The last time the [...]

Game Recap: Marlins 4 – Mets 3

Game Summary The Mets (9-12) lost to the Florida Marlins (13-8)  4-3 who won the series and and got back to their winning ways. The Mets squandered another solid start, this time by Johan Santana who didn’t figure into the decision. The bullpen had another classic meltdown, this time by J.J. Putz who along with Sean Green have blown back to back saves. Mets Pitching Johan Santana deserved a win today, but instead he got another no-decision as the Mets bats and the [...]

Uh-Oh

I was thinking last night as the Mets had a comfortable three-run lead, that maybe, just maybe they have turned a corner and that I can write something positive today. But in the back of my mind I was thinking that a 3-run lead with a (let’s face it) still-shaky bullpen was not going to hold up against the Marlins.

Jo-han, Jo-han, A Pitcher’s Life For Me

Amazing. There is no better word to describe Johan Santana. Talk about a stopper – he’s the only guy in the Mets rotation who can win!  (And have a different handshake for every teammate!)  Now I have been following baseball since 1990, and I’ll admit I have never been a fan of pitching. Never gave it any thought; it was just part of the game. No favorite player of mine has ever been a pitcher. I [...]

Mets Notes – Johan, Mighty Pen, Deja Vu, 22-4

Random thoughts on the Mets, baseball and global warming… Johan Santana proves that you don’t quibble about prospects when you are getting a proven Major League talent in return. The Twins will be lamenting this trade for years while Mets fans get treated to a pitching gem every time Santana takes the mound. One of those prospects we gave up was Phil Humber who was released on Friday. Santana has been the best pitcher in [...]

Game Recap: Mets Shutout Brewers 1-0

The game started out as a classic pitchers duel with both Johan Santana and Yovani Gallardo missing bats and chalking up the zeros. Both the Brewers and Mets were getting baserunners in the early going, but each team’s ace was in full control on this Saturday afternoon, where there was plenty of sunshine, hot dogs, ice cream and even Alyssa Milano who looks as gorgeous as ever. The Mets kept the Brewers scoreless thanks to [...]
