The Mets suffered a 5-1 loss against the Giants at Oracle Park on Tuesday evening, dropping the series in San Francisco. Despite notching nine hits, New York struggled to capitalize against the Giants’ ace Logan Webb, leaving eight runners on base and going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. This loss marks the Mets’ first series defeat in their last six.

Luis Severino started for New York, pitching six innings and allowing three runs on five hits, resulting in the loss. He recorded five strikeouts and now owns an ERA of 2.67 through five starts.

Severino retired his first 12 batters in order but began to struggle in the fifth inning, giving up three runs. Former Met Michael Conforto, Matt Chapman and Thairo Estrada each knocked a base hit, with Estrada driving in the first run of the evening. Mike Yastrzemski then delivered the inning’s fourth single, bringing in the remaining two runners for a 3-0 Giants lead.

Drew Smith pitched the seventh and gave up a leadoff triple to Estrada, leading to another RBI for Yastrzemski who knocked a single with no outs to extend the Giants lead. Smith put the next two batters away, but a wild pitch allowed Yastrzemski to advance and LaMonte Wade Jr. hit a two-out RBI double, extending the Giants’ lead to 5-0.

Jake Diekman took the bump in the eighth an had a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts.

In the ninth inning, the Mets managed to score a run on three hits but left two runners on base, falling short of a late rally. Pete Alonso led off with a double, followed by a single from Brett Baty in their final push. DJ Stewart‘s groundout advanced Alonso, and Jeff McNeil‘s single put runners on the corners. However, Joey Wendle struck out, and Omar Narvaez grounded out, ending the game.
