NL East Report
Atlanta Braves: (4-6; -5.5) The Braves were involved in the lone National League series this week, losing two of three to the Cincinnati Reds. They will move on to a very interesting series with the Red Sox. Friday’s matchup pits Japanese pitchers Kenshin Kawakami of the Braves against Daisuke Matsuzaka of the Red Sox. Saturday’s matchup tops that, as Braves ace Derek Lowe returns to Boston for the first time since 2004 against Red Sox [...]

Nieve Expectations, Murphy Hot, Santana Not
Two starts in and Fernando Nieve is looking like a solid waiver wire pickup, although we’ve been down this road before with guys like Alay Soler, Jorge Sosa and most recently Nelson Figueroa. Lets just temper our expectations a little before we start getting a little bit too giddy. Nieve had a 4.91 ERA at Class-AA Binghamton and a 3.70 ERA at Class-AAA Buffalo before he was called up. In his last three games, first baseman [...]

F-Mart Sent Down, Nick Evans Called Up
According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, Nick Evans has been called up to the Mets to replace Fernando Martinez who was optioned back to Buffalo. Evans was batting .276 with a .294 OBP at Double-A Binghamton since he was demoted from Buffalo where he batted .093 in 22 games. The Mets also had Evans consult a sports psychologist at the time to find the root of his problems. It was no surprise that [...]

Oliver Perez Takes Another Step Forward
Oliver Perez took a big step forward in his rehab today and seems to be nearing a return which could have him back by early July. According to AP, Perez who has been on the disabled list since May 7, threw 48 pitches in three shutout innings of an extended spring training game Thursday at the Mets’ rehab facility. He gave up three hits and one walk, and struck out five in the pain-free performance that [...]

Mets vs Orioles – Lineup, Sheffield, A Tiny Rant, And Some Thanks
The Mets get set to rebound from a pretty bad week of baseball tonight, when they take on the Baltimore Orioles. Mike Pelfrey (4-2, 4.68 ERA) Pelfrey was locked in for the first six innings against the Phillies on Wednesday, allowing two hits and one run. Things unraveled in the seventh, though; he surrendered three hits before being removed. All three runners scored, eliminating Pelfrey’s chance for a fifth win. Now, Pelfrey makes his first [...]

Super-prospect, Bryce Harper Skips High School
16-year old super-prospect Bryce Harper, who was referred to in Sports Illustrated as “The Kobe Bryant of Baseball,” will skip the final two years at Las Vegas High School to enroll in Community College this year. Doing so would enable Mr. Harper to enter the draft in June 2010, making him the likely number 1 overall pick. Harper is 6’3″ 205 lbs. (and still growing), and hit a 503-foot HR at Tropicana Field in Tampa [...]

Atlanta Braves: (2-2; -6.5) The Braves went 2-2 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and will open up an interleague series against the Baltimore Orioles. Tommy Hanson has the start tonight. Florida Marlins: (2-2; -8) The Marlins split their series with the St. Louis Cardinals. With this past week’s draft, they selected Chad James, a power pitcher from Oklahoma. James has a letter of intent with Oklahoma St., but will opt for the Marlins instead. The Marlins [...]

Fernando Nieve Gets Start Saturday, Jon Switzer Called Up
The Mets have will replace John Maine with right-hander Fernando Nieve on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. Nieve will be opposed by Andy Pettitte. To replace Maine’s spot on the roster, the Mets promoted lefty Jon Switzer from Triple-A Buffalo. Maine was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 7, with right-shoulder weakness. Maine says he expects to miss only one or two starts, but where have we heard that before? I’m kind of surprised that Nelson Figueroa [...]
