Mets DFA Casey Fossum, Call Up Ken Takahashi

The Mets designated reliever Casey Fossum for assignment immediatelty after Sunday’s loss to the Nationals and called up lefthanded reliever Ken Takahashi. Fossum pitched in relief of Oliver Perez and allowed a pair of inherited runners to score and also was charged with one run on three hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings. The Mets originally DFA’d Nelson Figuerora to make room for Fossum who was expected to become the second lefty in the [...]

The Sky Could Be Falling

Someone should have told the Mets they didn’t have this Sunday off. They sure did play as if today was not a regularly scheduled game. Again, we faced a rookie, and again he (Zimmermann) made us look very bad. Incidentally, our third Sunday in a row has been spoiled. I’ll confess that I stopped watching the game after Carlos—who-needs-to-slide—Beltran GIDP in the 8th. The rest of you can fill me in on the exciting 9th [...]

4/26 Minor League Report!

Buffalo 0, Syracuse 4 It was Dillon Gee’s turn to get shellacked today, as the Bisons lost yet again, their 14th loss in 16 games. Gee gave up 4 runs on 9 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings, taking his 3rd loss. Jon Switzer and Carlos Muniz each pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief, but the Bisons mustered nothing on offense, with just 7 hits and 3 walks. The team was 0 for 7 [...]

Game Recap: Mets 8 – Nationals 2

Game Summary The Mets (8-9) were the beneficiaries of some sloppy play by the Washington Nationals (3-13) this afternoon and took the second game of the series 8-2. Mike Pelfrey started and looked pretty good, while Carlos Beltran and Ryan Church continued their hot hitting. Mets Pitching Mike Pelfrey had a solid outing this afternoon which was all the more impressive when you consider he hasn’t been on a mound in ten days because of the forearm [...]

4/25 Minor League Report! Fernandez!

Buffalo 5, Syracuse 6 Another game, another loss, another very rough outing for Jon Niese. Niese lasted just 3.2 innings today, allowing 4 hits and 4 runs (3 earned, due to a Michel Abreu error), his ERA through 4 starts stands at a very inflated 8.44. Kyle Snyder took the loss, allowing 2 runs in 2.1 innings. Offensively, every regular except Jason Cooper (0 for 3, K, .214) had a hit, with Jon Malo and [...]

Mets Notes – Figgy Back, Big Pelf, Redding, Heads Rolling

The Daily News reports that Nelson Figueroa has decided to re-sign with the organization after testing free agency by refusing a minor-league assignment earlier in the week. Apparently, sometimes the best opportunity is where they know and like you, even if he was abruptly designated for assignment to make room for a second lefty reliever, Casey Fossum, after Figueroa allowed three runs in six innings against the Brewers on Sunday. I know that Figueroa is [...]

Lets Not Celebrate Too Much!

It’s great to have a victory, break a slump, and give Santana a win he deserves but, the Mets still have a huge problem with RISP and everyone knows it. In yesterday’s game the Mets left 13 on base and (get ready, I hope you’re sitting) where 1 for 18 with runners in scoring position. I can’t tell you an easy fix but if I had one, I think even Jerry would probably hear me [...]

The Good, the Bad, and the Johan

Once in a while, I have those days where in my gut I know that the Mets are going to lose. Once every fifth day, I feel really good about the game. With Johan Santana pitching, I know it will be a low-scoring affair (on both sides unfortunately). I think yesterday was the first game all season where I expected a win. Johan Santana vs. the Nationals was just what we needed. Welcome to the [...]

Jo-han, Jo-han, A Pitcher’s Life For Me

Amazing. There is no better word to describe Johan Santana. Talk about a stopper – he’s the only guy in the Mets rotation who can win!  (And have a different handshake for every teammate!)  Now I have been following baseball since 1990, and I’ll admit I have never been a fan of pitching. Never gave it any thought; it was just part of the game. No favorite player of mine has ever been a pitcher. I [...]

Mets At It Again, Take Down “K” Cards

If you watched last night’s game against the Nationals, you may have noticed the K-Cards that a group of fans were hanging as Johan Santana collected his 10 strikeouts. Well, leave it to the Mets to take the fun out of Citi Field once again. David Lennon of Newsday explains: Johan Santana’s 10 strikeouts Friday nearly got three graduate students from Syosset kicked out of Citi Field for posting K cards on the leftfield facade. [...]
