<p>Back on July 3, the New York Mets acquired relief pitcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gotttr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-14_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Trevor Gott</a></strong> by taking on the contract of <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/flexech01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-14_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Chris Flexen</a> </strong>(6.86 ERA this season), who the team promptly designated for assignment, and relief pitcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/muckeza01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-14_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Zach Muckenhirn</a></strong>, who was later designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners, but remained within the organization. Now, after an up-and-down season with the Mets, Gott is arbitration eligible and New York has a decision to make on whether or not to tender the 31-year-old.</p>
<p>Across 29 innings with New York after the trade, Gott pitched to a 4.34 ERA allowing 30 hits and striking out 30. His WHIP of 1.414 was also not an impressive figure. On the surface, pretty lackluster numbers, someone probably not deserving of sticking around.</p>
<p>However, a deeper dive into those figures show that Gott may just be a bounce-back candidate. Most of his expected figure indicate a pitcher that experienced some bad luck, and not necessarily received the actual results he deserved.</p>
<p>Gott&#8217;s xERA (3.40), FIP (3.20), and xFIP (4.16) are all lower than his meager overall season ERA of 4.19. Notably, the expected ERA figure ranked in the league&#8217;s 82nd percentile. Gott also excelled at getting soft contact (67th percentile in average exit velocity and 68th percentile in hard hit rate) as well as avoiding the opposition from barreling up his pitches (92nd percentile). Add in the fact he did a decent job, overall, not walking batters (67th percentile walk rate) you can see why his actual numbers projected to be much better than they actually were.</p>
<p>Not to mention, as it stands, the Mets&#8217; bullpen is pretty barren. <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/raleybr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-14_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Brooks Raley</a></strong> (club) and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/ottavad01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-14_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Adam Ottavino</a></strong> (player) both have options. Meanwhile, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=smithdr01,smith-006dre,smith-004dre,smith-003dre&amp;search=Drew+Smith&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-14_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Drew Smith</a></strong> is in the same boat as Gott, as he is arbitration eligible and the Mets have a decision to make there. Really, the only guaranteed piece of the bullpen, who has their respective contract situation figured out, is <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=diazed04,diazed03,diaz--005edw&amp;search=Edwin+Díaz&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-14_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Edwin Díaz</a></strong>.</p>
<p>With the fact Gott may be a bounce-back candidate, given the discrepancies in his expected and actual statistics, as well as the fact that the bullpen is currently in a pretty tough spot, tendering Gott would be the wise thing to do. Especially since <strong><a href="https://metsmerizedonline.com/salary-projections-for-mets-16-arbitration-eligible-players/">MLB Trade Rumors</a></strong> is only projecting a $2 million value in arbitration.</p>
<p>Tendering Gott, and finding resolution on a deal, would help the Mets begin building the all-important bullpen. Additionally, with a full offseason of additions, it is very unlikely again Gott would serve such a large role in the bullpen like he did last year, increasing the chances of a bounce-back campaign in 2024.</p>

<p>Back on July 3, the New York Mets, who were not yet in the fire sale mindset, made a move to acquire relief pitcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gotttr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-08-12_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Trevor Gott</a></strong> in exchange for reliever <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/muckeza01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-08-12_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Zach Muckenhirn</a></strong>. In the deal, New York also acquired former Met <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/flexech01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-08-12_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Chris Flexen</a></strong>, and his $8 million salary, but promptly designated him for assignment.</p>
<p>The thought process was simple. Acquire a solid bullpen arm while eating the salary of a player the Seattle Mariners no longer wanted. Flexen, before the deal, owned a 7.71 ERA and 6.65 FIP. He was far from the pitcher Seattle saw win 22 games and post ERAs of 3.61 and 3.73 in 2021 and 2022, respectively. To further validate the Mets&#8217; move to DFA him, Flexen went on to sign with the Colorado Rockies and promptly post a 8.56 ERA allowing 22 hits over 13 2/3 innings.</p>
<p>To put it simply, Flexen was rightfully not a desirable arm for Seattle, nor the Mets. By absorbing his contact, New York was able to acquire a major-league level relief arm. For those curious, the other piece in the deal, Muckenhirn, was designated for assignment and then sent to Triple-A not too long ago. He owns a 9.35 ERA across 8 2/3 Triple-A innings for Tacoma.</p>
<p>Now, this brings us to the performance of the prize of the deal, Trevor Gott. The right-handed reliever started his Mets&#8217; tenure off in the worst way. After three scoreless outings, Gott went on to allow six earned runs over a period of 1 2/3 innings. After allowing three runs against in Boston over just 1/3 of an inning, Gott had allowed eight hits and six runs in only 4 2/3 innings to begin his career with New York. This inflated his season ERA all the way up to 5.08.</p>
<p>This stretch had pundits and fans once again questioning another move by general manager Billy Eppler. Well, once again, it appears many jumped the gun.</p>
<div id="attachment_202500" style="width: 770px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-202500" class="wp-image-202500" src="https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Screenshot-2023-08-13-at-8.41.56-AM.png" alt="" width="760" height="893" srcset="https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Screenshot-2023-08-13-at-8.41.56-AM.png 800w, https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Screenshot-2023-08-13-at-8.41.56-AM-255x300.png 255w, https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Screenshot-2023-08-13-at-8.41.56-AM-768x902.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px" /><p id="caption-attachment-202500" class="wp-caption-text"><em><strong>Baseball Savant.</strong></em></p></div>
<p>Since the outing versus the Red Sox, Gott has posted nine-straight scoreless appearances. He has thrown 7 1/3 innings, allowing only six hits while striking out nine. Although still not exactly pretty, he has lowered his season ERA back down to 4.28. This is much more like the pitcher New York thought they were acquiring. The above snippet from <strong><a href="https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/">Baseball Savant</a></strong> shows just how strong Gott has been as a whole this year. Even despite that rough stretch.</p>
<p>The 30-year-old Gott was rightfully targeted by the Mets. He is just one season removed from posting an xERA of 2.94 over 45 2/3 innings. In the total sample, especially after factoring in this strong run he is on with New York, he has posted another strong season from an analytical perspective. A big reason why New York acquired him was he had one more year of control. If he keeps this up, he will certainly factor into the bullpen next season, showing exactly why New York made the deal back in July.</p>

The return is <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gotttr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-07-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Trevor Gott</a></strong> and former Mets pitcher <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/flexech01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-07-03_br"><strong>Chris Flexen</strong></a>. Seattle previously designated Flexen for assignment. According to The New York Post&#8217;s <strong><a href="https://nypost.com/2023/07/03/mets-acquire-chris-flexen-trevor-gott-in-trade-with-mariners/">Joel Sherman</a></strong>, the Mets will immediately designate Flexen for assignment.</p>
<p>Gott, 30, was activated from the injured list on June 27 after missing three weeks with lower back spasms. In 2023, he has a 4.03 ERA across 29 innings with a .277/.333/.403 slash line. For his career, Gott has a 4.70 ERA and 1.30 WHIP across 214.2 innings over parts of eight seasons.</p>
<p>Flexen, 29, was the Mets&#8217; 14th-round pick back in 2012. He made his major league debut with them in 2017 and appeared in 27 games over the course of 2017-19. He had an 8.07 ERA with the Mets during that time. Per Sherman, that is the worst ERA in Mets franchise history for any pitcher who threw at least 50 innings.</p>
<p>Flexen had a career rejuvenation in 2021 with Seattle after spending 2020 in Korea. He went 14-6 with a 3.61 ERA across 179 2/3 innings. Last season, he lost his rotation spot after Seattle acquired <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=castilu03,castilu02,castilu01,castil025lui,castil020lui,castil018lui&amp;search=Luis+Castillo&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-07-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Luis Castillo</a></strong> at the trade deadline, and the wheels fell off for him from there. After his $8 million option vested for 2023, Flexen has posted a 7.71 ERA across 17 appearances (four starts) and 42 innings. Opponents are slashing .333/.398/.542 (.940 OPS) against him this season.</p>
<p>The Mets agreed to pick up the prorated portion of Flexen&#8217;s contract, which is about $4 million, per Sherman. However, he is out of minor league options, so the Mets chose to designate him for assignment immediately, per Andy Martino of SNY. That would indicate that Gott was the target of the trade.</p>
<p>Still, the Mets may intend to send Flexen to Triple-A if and when he clears waivers for additional rotation and long relief insurance. However, since Flexen&#8217;s contract includes language that he cannot be sent to Triple-A, he would need to agree to be optioned.</p>
<p>Muckenhirn lost his 40-man roster spot when the Mets activated <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hernael01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-07-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Elieser Hernandez</a></strong> from the 60-day injured list today. He appeared in three games for the Mets and gave up four earned runs on 11 hits over six innings, a 6.00 ERA. Batters hit .407/.452/.556 against him.</p>
<p>The Mets have been searching for replacement-level arms who can somehow pitch above replacement level. Gott represents the next page in that ever-expanding chapter.</p>

<p>When the New York Mets are in a funk, it&#8217;s often as hard for a writer to put pen to paper (or to type the words) as it is for the reader to focus on them. The weekend series against the Nationals seemed to have the possibility of finally giving some cause for optimism after the Mets won two of the first three. Alas, the series was a wraparound, and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/peterda01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-16_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">David Peterson</a></strong> killed that dream faster than you can say &#8220;minors.&#8221; The Mets failed to win their sixth consecutive series.</p>
<h2><span style="color: #ff6600">3 Up</span></h2>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff">Two Stellar Starting Efforts</span></h3>
<p>The meltdown of the Mets&#8217; starting rotation has been one of the most disappointing parts of their early season. Despite injuries, the team thought it had the depth to weather storms and has seemingly been sorely mistaken. That was not necessarily disproven in this series, but they did get a pair of much-needed decent outings.</p>
<p>A five-inning, one-earned-run effort from <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/megilty01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Tylor Megill</a></strong> was actually enough to earn a victory, as was <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/scherma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Max Scherzer</a></strong>&#8216;s five-inning, one-run performance. It remains highly imperfect: Megill threw 93 pitches in those five innings and continued his WHIP problem by allowing four hits and four walks, while Scherzer got into trouble in the second, putting the Mets in another early hole. Still, the team will take it and just hope that the pair can build upon whatever modest success they found. Scherzer threw 50 strikes out of 83 pitches, and his velocity ticked back up from his previous start.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff">Nimmo Sparks Rallies</span></h3>
<p><strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nimmobr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Brandon Nimmo</a></strong> seems to be coming out of his funk, as he had another strong series. He went 6-for-17 in total and scored the go-ahead run on a three-run single from <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lindofr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Francisco Lindor</a></strong> in the opener. He added a sac fly in his first at-bat continuing Saturday&#8217;s suspended game, immediately knotting the game at one. He also had an RBI single in the third to push across the go-ahead run and buoy the Mets&#8217; eight-run fifth.</p>
<p>Whatever the sluggers have been doing (or not) behind him, Nimmo is getting back in gear.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff">Some Bullpen Wins</span></h3>
<p>Lost in the Mets&#8217; suspended-game defeat was how good a job their bullpen did, relatively speaking. After the umpires mismanaged Saturday&#8217;s suspended game, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/showabu99.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Buck Showalter</a></strong> was forced to use his bullpen for six innings in the first of a twin bill. All told, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nogosst01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Stephen Nogosek</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/leonedo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Dominic Leone</a></strong>, and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/santade01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Dennis Santana</a></strong> combined to allow two runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Despite Leone&#8217;s surrendering the go-ahead home run to C.J. Abrams just after the Mets had tied it up, this game, on the whole, cannot be blamed on the pitching. The bullpen trio did yeoman&#8217;s work.</p>
<p>In the opener, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/brighje01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jeff Brigham</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/ottavad01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Adam Ottavino</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/roberda08.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">David Robertson</a></strong>, and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=smithdr01,smith-006dre,smith-004dre,smith-003dre&amp;search=Drew+Smith&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Drew Smith</a></strong> all tossed zeroes at the Nationals, backing up the Mets&#8217; razor-thin lead. Robertson worked five outs before tiring at 40 pitches in the ninth, forcing Smith into the game with runners on first and second and two outs. Smith struck out <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=thomala02,thomas001lan&amp;search=Lane+Thomas&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Lane Thomas</a></strong> to end the threat and earn his first career save.</p>
<p>The third game of the series was already in mostly comfortable territory by the time the bullpen got involved, although things did get slightly dicey. After Scherzer left the game, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/raleybr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Brooks Raley</a></strong> danced around three walks to keep Washington off the board, but <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/muckeza01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Zach Muckenhirn</a></strong> got into some trouble in the eighth. He allowed a run and loaded the bases but got Thomas to ground out, ending the mini-threat. Muckenhirn finished the game.</p>
<p>While <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hunteto02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-16_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Tommy Hunter</a></strong> did allow four runs in three innings in the finale, the game was already pretty far out of reach beforehand. Hunter essentially filled the punter role for <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/showabu99.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-16_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Buck Showalter</a></strong>, enabling him to save his other relievers from further work.</p>
<p>Aside from Hunter, Mets relief pitchers threw 14 innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits, seven walks, and 14 strikeouts. That&#8217;s a good sign, regardless of whom it&#8217;s against, and even though the walk numbers are way too high.</p>
<div id="attachment_376068" style="width: 1081px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-376068" class="size-full wp-image-376068" src="https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/E2B3D4EC-17A4-406F-9579-E83E8359C9F1-e1677510685909.jpeg" alt="" width="1071" height="896" /><p id="caption-attachment-376068" class="wp-caption-text">Photo by Ed Delany of Metsmerized</p></div>
<h2><span style="color: #ff6600">3 Down</span></h2>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff">First Inning Woes</span></h3>
<p>The Nationals scored a first-inning run in three of the four games, adding to the Mets&#8217; streak of digging a hole early. There&#8217;s something seemingly symbolic about the reversal of last season&#8217;s trend when the Mets gave other teams fits in the first inning. It wasn&#8217;t <em>all</em> bad: the Mets did make <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gorema01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-15_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">MacKenzie Gore</a></strong> work in the first inning on Friday night and ended up chasing him after four innings even though they did not score against him.</p>
<p>Still, the Mets have been outscored 37-9 in the first inning this season. They might want to start thinking about a different way to set up the team for success, particularly since the first inning tends to be the highest-scoring inning across baseball each year.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff">Runs Still At a Premium</span></h3>
<p>Despite the Mets&#8217; eight-run outburst in the fifth inning of the third game, they still struggled to score runs in this series. Other than that barrage, the Mets played 35 innings and scored eight runs, an average of 2.0 runs per nine innings. That is an absolute bottom-of-the-barrel performance by the offense, even if the overall series averages (4.0 runs per game) don&#8217;t seem as terrible.</p>
<p>As constituted, this team has so little margin for error: when either their hitting <em>or</em> their pitching is up to snuff, they <span style="text-decoration: underline">must</span> win to salvage the all-too-many games when all aspects of the team are crumbling. The Mets thought they had built a team predicated on pitching but still able to win on the offensive side. That has not been the case at all in the early going.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff">Not a Major League Pitcher</span></h3>
<p>Peterson seemingly does something more shockingly awful every time he pitches. Somehow, he managed to <em>raise</em> his ERA in this game when it came in at 7.71. He put the Mets in a hole from the get-go once more, then abruptly gave up two runs in the third and fourth to put the game out of reach (for this iteration of the Mets, anyway). He added another run in the fifth for good measure.</p>
<p>The Mets may seemingly not have a choice, but they can&#8217;t keep running Peterson out there. <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/reyesde02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-16_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Denyi Reyes</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/buttojo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-16_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">José Butto</a></strong> have at least had their moments this season; Peterson is a guaranteed blow-up every single time he takes the mound.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s hard to understand what happened to Peterson this season. Still, the Mets are becoming a lollipop team when he pitches. Common sense would dictate leaving him in the minors regardless of need at this point. The Mets are more likely to catch lightning in a bottle elsewhere than to fix Peterson&#8217;s issues on the fly.</p>
<p>The Mets head home for a series with the MLB-leading Tampa Bay Rays beginning on Tuesday.</p>

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports</strong></em></p></div>
<p>The New York Mets (20-21) completed their split-admission doubleheader against the Washington Nationals on Mother&#8217;s Day. After dropping the first game in the doubleheader 3-2, the Mets&#8217; offense came back to life to Washington 8-2. All eight runs coming in the fifth inning.</p>
<p>Their eight runs in the game is the most they scored since the beginning of the month when they lost to the Atlanta Braves on May 1. The Mets&#8217; offense before today&#8217;s game had scored a total of 12 runs since the start of the road trip in Cincinnati.</p>
<p><strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/scherma01.shtml">Max Scherzer</a></strong> returned to form against his former team, as the veteran threw five inning of one-run ball. Scherzer gave up two hits, two walks, and struck out six . A much-needed quality outing from an individual the Mets need to pitch like an ace.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/raleybr01.shtml"><strong>Brooks Raley</strong></a> also came back from the injured list in the sixth inning and had a relatively shaky outing. After walking the first two batters in the inning, he struck out <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/garrest01.shtml"><strong>Stone Garrett</strong></a> before loading the bases with a couple more walks. Raley settled in and got <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/abramcj01.shtml">CJ Abrams</a></strong> to fly out to <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nimmobr01.shtml"><strong>Brandon Nimmo</strong></a>.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/i/irvinja01.shtml"><strong>Jake Irvin</strong></a> started for the Washington Nationals and kept the Mets at bay throughout the first half of the game. Aside from two double from <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lindofr01.shtml"><strong>Francisco Lindor</strong></a> and <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/canhama01.shtml"><strong>Mark Canha</strong></a>, Irvin was an enigma for the Mets offense.</p>
<p>Then, Mets solved that issue in the top of the fifth inning. <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/martest01.shtml"><strong>Starling Marte</strong></a> got the offensive party started with a single and was sent home with a Canha double to tie the game at one.</p>
<p>After <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/phamth01.shtml"><strong>Tommy Pham</strong></a> walked to put runners on first and second, Nimmo singled to bring Canha home and put the Mets in front, 2-1. Lindor then knocked an infield single which tallied another run. <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alonspe01.shtml"><strong>Pete Alonso</strong></a> was hit by a pitch to load the bases for <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/batybr01.shtml"><strong>Brett Baty</strong></a>, who was walked to score the fourth Mets run of the inning.  Marte came back up to the plate to score two more runs on a bloop single. Lastly, to cap it off, Canha knocked another two runs home to tally eight runs in the fifth inning to put New York up 8-1.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/muckeza01.shtml"><strong>Zach Muckenhirn</strong></a> took the mound for the Mets in the top of the eighth inning. After Garrett was hit by a pitch and <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/callal02.shtml"><strong>Alex Call</strong></a> singled, Abrams singled off Muckenhirn to bring home the Nationals&#8217; second run of the game. That was all the scoring the Nationals did, as they were only able to muster two runs.</p>
<p>Overall, it was terrific to see Scherzer regain his form. Further, the eight-run inning was a terrific sign for a Mets&#8217; offense that desperately needed to break out. The break out was also led by some New York players who have been struggling as of late. Namely, Canha and Marte. A nice end to a long day of baseball.</p>
<div id="attachment_379878" style="width: 770px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-379878" class="wp-image-379878 size-full" src="https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/USATSI_20525886_168390281_lowres-e1682950803296-1.jpg" alt="" width="760" height="507" /><p id="caption-attachment-379878" class="wp-caption-text"><em><strong>Mark Canha. John Hefti-USA TODAY Sports</strong></em></p></div>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff">Players of the Game: Mark Canha</span></h3>
<p>Mark Canha&#8217;s bat woke up in the second game of Sunday&#8217;s doubleheader. Canha went 3-for-4 on the day with two doubles and a single. His second double of the game and his single each brought home a run. Canha also played sold defensively, making one nice sliding catch.</p>

<p>The Mets took on the Detroit Tigers in the second game of their doubleheader at Comerica Park on Wednesday night as <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/scherma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Max Scherzer</a> </strong>made his return from his 10-game suspension. After only pitching three innings over the last three weeks, Scherzer had no command and gave up six runs in 3 1/3 innings.  The Mets lost 8-1,  and were swept in the doubleheader to fall to 16-15.</p>
<p>In his first outing since his ejection in Los Angeles on April 19, Scherzer was not sharp to begin his night. After a leadoff walk and an infield single, Scherzer got ahead of <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/baezja01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Javier Báez</a> </strong>but put an 0-2 fastball over the plate that allowed the free-swinging Báez to advance the lead runner to third base on a fly out to right field. <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/matonni01.shtml">Nick Maton</a> </strong>followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in the game&#8217;s first run. With two outs, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/torkesp01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Spencer Torkelson</a> </strong>hit an RBI double to the gap in left-center to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.</p>
<p>In the second inning, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/haaseer01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Eric Haase</a> </strong>continued to torment Mets pitching by clubbing his second home run of the doubleheader. The 0-1 slider from Scherzer was on the outside corner of the plate, but stayed up about belt-high for the Tigers&#8217; catcher to give Detroit a 3-0 lead.</p>
<p>After a scoreless third inning for Scherzer, the Mets got a run back in the top of the fourth inning. <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alonspe01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Pete Alonso</a> </strong>walked to start the inning, and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/vogelda01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Daniel Vogelbach</a> </strong>laced a double down the right-field line to cut the Tigers&#8217; lead to 3-1. The Mets were unable to move Vogelbach any further though after reaching second base with nobody out.</p>
<p>Just as quickly as the Mets cut into the lead in the top of the fourth inning, the Tigers broke the game open in the bottom half of the inning. After Scherzer allowed a leadoff single, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/vierlma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Matt Vierling</a> </strong>hit the Tigers&#8217; second home run of the game to make it a 5-1 game. Scherzer followed the home run by allowing singles to two of the next three hitters to put an end to his night.</p>
<p>With two runners on base, the Mets turned to <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=mucken000zac&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Zach Muckenhirn</a> </strong>to make his MLB debut. His first pitch to <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/greenri03.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Riley Greene</a> </strong>was smoked for an RBI single to give the Tigers a 6-1 lead and close the book on Scherzer&#8217;s night.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true">

<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>After the single by Greene, Muckenhirn settled in. He got out of the fourth inning thanks to a 1-4-3 double-play from Báez, then followed with a perfect fifth inning.</p>
<p><strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/buttojo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">José Butto</a></strong> entered the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, and had a solid outing of his own. Butto threw scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh, and went back out for the eighth inning. He allowed a leadoff single and was pulled for <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/curtijo02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">John Curtiss</a></strong> after a strikeout. Curtiss got the second out, but a double from Haase and a two-run single by <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/i/ibanean01.shtml"><strong>Andy Ibáñez </strong></a>extended the Tigers&#8217; lead to 8-1.</p>
<p>The Mets failed to get any offense going after the fourth inning, and trailing by seven runs, the Mets went down 1-2-3 in the ninth inning to close out their second loss of the day. The doubleheader sweep was the Mets first in their previous 26 doubleheaders and their first since 2020 when they were swept by the Nationals.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff">Player of the Game: Zach Muckenhirn</span></h3>
<p>Not much went well for the Mets on Wednesday night, but Muckenhirn had a quality first-career outing. The former 11th-round pick allowed a hit on his first pitch, but bounced back by getting a double play, then retired all three batters he faced the following inning.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #ff6600">On Deck</span></h3>
<p>The Mets will look to salvage the finale of their series with Detroit on Thursday at 1:10 p.m. ET. <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/verlaju01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Justin Verlander</a> </strong>will make his highly-anticipated Mets debut against the team he spent his first 13 years in the majors with. Verlander has pitched 189 games at Comerica Park and has a lifetime 3.19 ERA over 1,263 2/3 innings in Detroit. <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=rodried05,rodried01&amp;search=Eduardo+Rodriguez&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-05-03_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Eduardo Rodriguez</a> </strong>(2-2, 2.21 ERA) will make the start for the Tigers. After a poor start in his second game of the season against the Astros, Rodriguez has not allowed more than one run in any of his last four starts.</p>
<p>The game will be broadcast on SNY (and MLB Network for the out-of-market Met fans,) and the radio call will be on WCBS 880.</p>

<p>After the bad news that the New York Mets (7-11) got with <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=diazed04,diazed03,diaz--005edw&amp;search=Edwin+Díaz&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-16_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Edwin Diaz</a></strong>’s season-ending injury, they needed something good to happen.</p>
<p>The Mets did lose 3-0 to the Nationals down in West Palm Beach, but the team did get a good start from right-hander <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=senga-000kod&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-16_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Kodai Senga</a> </strong>in his second spring start with the team.</p>
<p>Despite the loss, Senga put up a strong outing. He got off to a rough start in the bottom of the first. <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=thomala02,thomas001lan&amp;search=Lane+Thomas&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-16_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Lane Thomas</a></strong> led off the inning with a double and eventually came around to score on an <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/callal02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-16_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Alex Call</a> </strong>sacrifice fly to put the Nats up 1-0.</p>
<p>After that inning, Senga was able to limit the damage and he ended his outing by striking out the side (all swinging) in the third. He went three innings, allowed one run on three hits, and struck out five on 47 pitches (34 strikes).</p>

<p>The Mets offense was unable to do much against the six Washington Nationals pitchers they faced (<a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/peralwi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-16_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><strong>Wily Peralta</strong></a> was the starter). <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/locasti01.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tim Locastro</a></strong> continued his strong spring as he went 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base. <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nidoto01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-16_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Tomás Nido</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/vientma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-16_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Mark Vientos</a></strong> each recorded a hit, but the Mets as a team were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.</p>
<p><strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/roberda08.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-16_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">David Robertson</a></strong> came in after Senga and he allowed one hit in a scoreless fourth inning as he auditions for the closer role. Even though he allowed a double to Vargas, he was able to induce three groundball outs.</p>

They both threw perfect innings and Muckenhirn had two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 seventh.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: left"><span style="color: #0000ff"><strong>Player Of The Game</strong></span></h3>
<p>Kodai Senga gets the player of the game for having a good bounce-back outing as he showed no effects from the finger injury that caused him to miss his last start. He was able to get more swings-and-misses as evident by the five strikeouts that he had. He allowed just three hits and one run while striking out five in three innings of work. It was the kind of outing that Senga needed, and it was an outing that the Mets would have no doubt been pleased to see too.</p>

<p>The Mets signed Zach Muckenhirn to a minor league deal at the end of November. Muckenhirn, who will be 28 next week, is looking to break through to the 40-man roster as a lefty reliever. In addition to competing with the players already on the Mets roster, he is competing against other NRIs like T.J. McFarland to be a lefty specialist.</p>
<p>Muckenhirn was drafted by the Orioles in the 11th round back in 2016 out of the University of North Dakota. In his last year with the Orioles in 2019, he showed success in Double-A (3.21 ERA, 37 games, 53 1/3 innings) but faltered in his brief time in Triple-A, allowing seven runs over 3 2/3 innings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he bounced over to the Puerto Rico Winter League where he had success in small samples. Over 11 outings (12 1/3) innings in 2020 he had a 0.73 ERA.</p>
<p>This was enough to get picked up by the White Sox in 2021 where he impressed with a 1.77 ERA over 40 2/3 innings in Double-A. He continued that success into the winter where he played in another 9 games allowing no runs.</p>
<p>Muckenhirn played 2022 with the White Sox again, producing a 3.11 ERA and 1.345 WHIP over 47 games and 55 innings in Triple-A.</p>
<p>Right now, Muckenhirn is on the outside looking in. He’s fighting for a roster spot and doesn’t have any major league experience yet. Playing between in Puerto Rico and the States over the last three years, he has shown flashes of success. It’s all about getting hot at the right time of spring. Muckenhirn can make some noise and force the issue. Ultimately, the Mets will be looking at how he does against major-league-level players for call up later in the season.</p>
<p>If Muckenhirn has a spring similar to what he did in Triple-A in 2022 and starts off in Syracuse the same way, it feels more than likely he’ll see some playing time in Queens this year.</p>

<p>The Mets announced on Wednesday they have signed right-handed pitcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/reyesde02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Denyi Reyes</a> </strong>and left-hand pitcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=mucken000zac&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Zach Muckenhirn</a></strong> to minor league deals with invites to spring training.</p>
<p>Reyes, 26, made his major league debut last season in three games with the Baltimore Orioles. He allowed two earned runs in 7.2 IP while striking out three batters and walking only one. In the minors last season, Reyes had a 6.60 ERA in 17 games, including 12 starts.</p>
<p>Muckenhirn, a 2016 11th-round pick by Baltimore, pitched last season in AAA in the Chicago White Sox organization, where he finished with a 3.11 ERA in 47 games. Muckenhirn struck out 56 batters in 55 IP and had a WHIP of 1.35.</p>
<p>The signings <strong><a href="https://metsmerizedonline.com/a-deeper-dive-into-the-newest-mets-pitchers/">continue a trend</a> </strong>of the Mets adding depth to their pitching staff this offseason. The team has traded for Jeff Bringham and Elieser Hernández and  claimed <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ridinst01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Stephen Ridings</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sauceta01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Tayler Saucedo</a></strong>, and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/woodswi02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">William Woods</a></strong> off of waivers already this offseason.</p>
