Back to back doubles by Taijeron and Sanchez in the bottom of the eighth inning resulted in three runs scoring and put the game out of reach. After a day off on Thursday, Nimmo was back in the starting lineup in center-field and played seven full innings in the field before being removed from the game.

Gonzalez produced his second straight quality start and earned his fourth straight win in as many games. While he hasn’t missed many bats (8.4% Swinging Strike Rate), Gonzalez has still held opponents to a .197 AVG since being re-promoted to Triple-A posting a 2.55 ERA along the way.

The Rumble Ponies offense was held to only five hits on the night and were a paltry 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. They had a chance to blow the game open with no outs and the bases loaded in the top of the tenth inning but Michael Paez hit into a 6-2-3 double play followed by a Jacob Zanon strikeout to end the threat.

Jannis was magnificent once again for the Ponies registering his fourth straight quality start while holding the Fisher Cats to only five hits on the day. Taylor was the tough-luck loser as the only hit he allowed was in the bottom of the eleventh inning after the extra-inning automatic runner was advanced to third base on a sac bunt.
Gagnon flirted with danger all game but was able to wiggle out of RISP opportunities in almost every inning he pitched, including a bases loaded, one out jam in the fifth inning. Amazingly, he would end up allowing only one run, despite ten base-runners reaching.

Wilson really struggled with his command yesterday issuing three walks on the day, seven hits (including four extra base hits), and two HBP resulting in a run scoring in every inning he pitched. Despite the short outing by Wilson, the Rumble Ponies bullpen would not be taxed as Villines saved the day with his longest performance of the season. His three shut-out innings allowed the team to take the lead and put him in a position to earn his second win of the season but Torres could not hold the lead. After a tossing a perfect eighth inning, Torres allowed the tying run to score in the ninth inning on a solo home run and a game winning run via a squeeze bunt in the tenth.

Kay has been pretty oKay since his initial adjustment period at Syracuse. He pitched five innings for the fourth consecutive start while striking out six batters, which he only accomplished one other time during his tenure with the Mets. After two starts with the Mets, his ERA sat an ugly 16.20. He’s since lowered it to 6.61, which speaks to his improvement during his tenure in the minor’s highest level.

Flexen hasn’t really settled into a reliever role yet; he’s failed to have a perfect outing yet. Despite taking the loss, Peterson had been pretty solid with Syracuse. He currently has the lowest ERA and the WHIP on the team.

The Mets scored six runs in the seventh but weren’t able to generate any offense in the game outside of that inning. The Mets entered the frame down by four, but Danny Espinosa halved the lead with a two-run shot, his 15th homer of the season. After the red-hot Tejada doubled, Herrera traded places with him with an RBI single and a stolen base. Luis Guillorme tied up the game with an RBI single that drove in Herrera. After a pitching change, Travis Taijeron quickly untied the game with his 22nd blast of the year. Trailing by one in the ninth, Arismendy Alcantara, Braxton Lee, and Gregor Blanco went down 1-2-3.

Another reason why Luis Guillorme is a defensive magician:

Lee’s been on quite the roll since being demoted to Binghamton in early July. Despite not striking out tons of hitters, he’s gotten success by inducing a ton of weak flyballs. Hanhold’s another player that recently joined Binghamton and has excelled. Brent Hershey of Baseball HQ raved about his performance, noting his impressive velocity on both his fastball and his slider.

The Mets couldn’t muster much offense, but their five hits were more than enough for Lee and Hanhold. Much like their Triple-A squad, they did all on their damage in one frame. In the third inning, Sam Haggerty knocked home Quinn Brodey to kick off the scoring.
In his first start since returning from Syracuse, Jannis struggled with his knuckler from the outset, giving up three runs in the first inning. It’s been an insanely frustrating season for Jannis, who’s consistently strung a few of solid starts before faltering in his next few appearances. Zanghi gave up a walk-off two-run homer to Cornelius Randolph in the bottom of the seventh frame.

Fresh off a game where their offense couldn’t get much going, Binghamton made sure not to replicate that in their second game of the day. Luis Carpio led the way with his fourth three-hit game of the season. Rennie, who was signed out of the independent league just last year, absolutely dominated the Cardinals, holding them to only a hit over seven innings. He made quick of the Palm Beach batters, hurling just 86 pitches. The seven innings tied a season-high for Rennie, who’s pitched to a 2.67 ERA over his last three starts. Outside a couple of blowouts, Kiensa’s been pretty effective this year.

The Mets’ offense was quiet outside of a three-run third. In the frame, the Mets loaded the bases with no one out. The Mets tacked on a run due to a wild pitch by Cardinals’ pitcher, Griffin Roberts.
The 18-year-old was outstanding yet again, shutting down the GreenJackets over five innings with seven strikeouts. As MetsMerizedOnline.com’s Mathew Brownstein noted, this marked the second consecutive outing by Woods-Richardson that he threw five scoreless frames without walking a batter. While his poor 3-8 record and 4.25 ERA doesn’t do him justice, his xFIP ranks sixth in all of the Minor-Leagues and his 14.5% SwStr% ranks first among all Mets farmhands. He’s absolutely exceeded expectations this season.

Just like the many of their fellow minor-league affiliates, Columbia failed to get much going in this one. Vientos has been heating up as of late; he knocked in his 16th RBI of the month. It’s his first season with the Fireflies and like usual, he’s needed an adjustment period to adapt to the new level. With a .323/.370/.556 slash line over his last month worth of games, it’s evident that he’s gotten over that adjustment period.

* Records are from July 8th, the original day the contest was started

In their first game of the day, the GCL Mets wrapped up their suspended game from July 8th. Due to weather, the umpires paused the game midway through the 11th inning with the Nationals up 5-to-3. After Zach Ashford flew out for the first out, Anderson Bohorquez and Warren Saunders batted out of order which allowed the Nats to easily win the game.

Ventura has been perfectly serviceable since coming up from the Dominican Summer League. The Mets seem to be toying with the idea of Gonzalez developing as a multi-inning reliever. After failing to impress out of the rotation last year, he’s pitched strictly out of the bullpen this season.

The Mets were down for the majority of the game, but they scored seven runs in the last two innings to complete the comeback. Ashford enjoyed the best game of his career, driving in tie-breaking runs in both the fourth and eighth innings. Ashford’s been raking since being sent to the Gulf Coast; his .905 OPS ranks second among all 2019 Mets draftees. Willian Lugo has greatly struggled in his pro debut; he’s recorded only three extra-base hits in his first 22 professional games.

This start was clearly the worst of Rincones’ professional career. He simply couldn’t control where the ball was going, issuing two walks and five wild pitches, which was rather surprising considering his 3.2 BB/9 mark entering the day.

The Mets offense couldn’t get much going and they were held to just two runs on seven hits in Friday’s game. Tebow has had a miserable season, in which he has been one of the worst hitters in professional baseball, and it seems likely that Triple-A may be the highest level he reaches, but can still get a big hit every now and then. He hit just his second home run of the season in the second inning to cut the Mets’ deficit to one run.

Gagnon made his second Triple-A start since his demotion and, despite allowing eight baserunners in four innings, limiting the damage against him to just a two-run home run in the first inning. The bullpen was solid and kept the Mets in the game.

With three big late-inning home runs, the Rumble Ponies were able to pull off an impressive comeback victory on Friday night. Barnes would give the team the lead with his eighth-inning home run, while Toffey and Quinn Brodey were able to add two extra runs in the ninth inning. Toffey has been in a bit of an extended slump, but he is starting to show some good power over the past month.

This start is largely representative of Peterson’s entire season: He dominated for the first four innings, limited walks, struck out more batters than innings pitched, and 10 out of the 15 balls in play against him were on the ground. These are all signs of a good start, but, once again, a poor fifth inning results in his line looking somewhat poor. It is unclear what are the reasons behind Peterson’s struggles in the middle innings (he only threw 78 pitches) or why his BABIP is so astronomically high (sitting near .360 following this start), but, in theory, he is doing everything he is expected to do succeed. Hopefully, the results begin to show in the near future.

The Mets scattered nine hits in the 10 inning game, but went an atrocious 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position and could manage to score just the single run. The lone run came on Bohanek’s fourth inning solo home run. Vasquez has yet to find the power expected from a first baseman, but he continues to pick up hits. In the eleven games since the All-Star break, Vasquez is hitting .372/.426/.535 with seven doubles.

Wilson had what was, by far, his best start of the year, needing just 88 pitches to get through seven shutout innings. While Wilson’s 46:30 leaves something to be desired, the 22-year-old righty has been on a roll recently: over his last five starts, Wilson has allowed just three earned runs in 25 innings pitched, lowering his ERA from 4.79 to 3.50.

Columbia (29-46) 4, Hickory (48-27) 0 Box Score

The Fireflies didn’t have much offense in this game, producing just five hits all game, with Moreno’s first-inning home run representing the only extra-base hit. However, with the fantastic pitching performance by Columbia, that one run would have been all the team had needed to win. Mauricio has been in a bit of a slump over the past couple of weeks: Over his last ten games, he is just 10-for-46 with 14 strikeouts and no home runs or walks.

This start represented an important milestone for Szapucki in that it was the first time since July 1, 2017, that he has pitched into the fourth inning or thrown 50 pitches in a start. It was also one of the best starts of his career as he would not allow a single hit before his exit. Megill would pick up where Szapucki left off and pitch brilliantly over a season-high 4.1 innings. He would carry the no-hitter into the ninth inning, in which he would allow a double with one out. Both pitchers have been fantastic for the first half of 2019 and should be in St. Lucie in the near future.

Brooklyn (8-5) 5, Lowell (10-3) 4 Box Score

It took the Cyclones eleven innings, but they were able to finish the late-inning comeback victory on Friday night. Ritter had struggled a bit since he made his professional debut two weeks ago, but he broke out in a big way in this game. Just a triple short of the cycle, Ritter’s big two-out home run in the ninth inning would send the game to extra innings, while his 11th inning single would walk it off for Brooklyn.

Mets started out Monday night with two very solid picks to start off the draft, but they came in extremely heavy-handedly today in round three. The Mets took Seminole High School right-hander Matthew Allan. Allan was projected to go in the first round yesterday and just happened to fall through. Jeff Passan of ESPN tweeted that the Cubs were said to have been close to taking Allan, but did not do so due to signability concerns.

Reports early on were that Allan wanted four million dollars to sign. While that could seem like a concern for a slot worth just $678,500, the Mets seem to have done everything they could with the rest of their picks today to ensure that the money would be there by taking a slew of low-bonus college seniors in the ensuing rounds. The assumption is also that the Mets will go under slot on first-round pick Brett Baty, and second-round pick Josh Wolf. The Mets are confident that they will come to an agreement.

There is some recent speculation that the original four million dollar mark was an overshoot, and it will not take as much to get Allan to go pro rather than see his commitment to the University of Florida through. Getting all three of their first picks to sign would not only transform how this draft looks for the Mets for the best, but it would also have a similarly significant, and immediate, impact on the state of their farm.

With their fourth-round pick, the Mets took a familiar name in Jake Mangum, center fielder out of Mississippi State University, who they drafted in the 32nd round of last years draft. The speedy center fielder was ranked the 171st best draft prospect by MLB.com, and 338th by Baseball America. Mangum hit .375/.427/.490 this season, showing excellent bat-to-ball skills again, but showing very limited power in his profile. Mangum’s contact ability and strong defensive profile will be his calling card as he moves up through the Mets organization. Brief writer’s note: a credit to our own Dilip Sridar for calling the Mets redrafting Mangum in the draft preview linked overhead.

Rounds 5-10:

Round 5: 148 Overall, Nathan Jones, RHP, Northwestern State University
Round 6: 178 Overall, Zach Ashford, OF, Fresno State University
Round 7: 208 Overall, Luke Ritter, 2B, Wichita State University
Round 8: 238 Overall, Connor Wollersheim, LHP, Kent State University
Round 9: 268 Overall, Joe Genord, C/1B, University of South Florida
Round 10: 298 Overall, Scott Ota, OF, University of Illinois-Chicago

Mets, as aforementioned, went heavy on drafting college seniors with their last seven picks. Clearly, they’re trying to save money in these rounds to increase the bonus offer to third-round pick Matthew Allan. Nevertheless, while these names may not jump off the page for anyone – Wollersheim was the only one of the last 6 picks to be ranked by any outlet as he was ranked 378th by Baseball America- but each one of these guys has at least some tools that they excel in.

Ashford, like Mangum, is a speedy center fielder who could stick at the position, and exhibits excellent bat-to-ball skills. He also walked more than twice as much as he struck out (38 walks to 17 strikeouts).

Ritter has an interesting profile with a solid combination of glove and bat. From the sound of it, Ritter seems to have a “handyman” profile, as in he’s good at most things, but not great at anything. Definitely doesn’t hurt to have a well-rounded profile.

Mets went for power bats for the last two picks of day two in Genord and Ota. While neither player was ranked by any major media, they seem to have enough profile in their bats to at least be interesting to watch develop. It will be interesting to see if the Mets play Genord at catcher.

One thing to watch is where the Mets place these guys within the organization. They were all seniors and saw their highest crop of competition. Now it’s time to see how they stack up.

The draft will continue today at 1 PM EST. We will be continuing our coverage of rounds 11-40 over at MetsMinors.net.
