Unfortunately, the rest of the teams in the New York Mets’ upper levels of the minor leagues struggled, as Syracuse was the only team to bring home a win. However, JT Benson continues to light it up professionally after being signed prior to the season as an undrafted free agent.

Lastly, Luis Robert Jr. continued his rehab for Triple-A Syracuse, playing the whole game in center field.

A big fourth inning propelled Syracuse to victory Saturday. The biggest of the three run-scoring hits in the frame came via a bases-clearing triple off the bat of Bruján.

Robert Jr. continued his rehab assignment, going 0-for-4. He played the whole game in center field. He is 1-for-10 across his three rehab games for Syracuse.

After owning a 1.08 ERA through his first seven starts of the season, Wenninger had seen that ERA steadily raise to a 3.84 mark prior to Saturday’s start. However, he dazzled, turning in his best outing of the season.

On Saturday, the 24-year-old tossed seven one-hit innings walking three and striking out five. He threw 93 pitches (56 strikes) while including 13 swing-and-misses.

Double-A

Binghamton’s offense continued their historically poor season on Saturday, mustering three runs. Their season team .666 OPS ranks second-to-last among every team between Single-A to Triple-A.

Their two lone extra-base hits came via a Rudick home run, his second of the season. Schwartz also had a double, his 13th of the year.

The former Rice Owl had a 2.73 ERA across 29 2/3 High-A innings before a call-up. He now has a 2.08 ERA across his first 8 2/3 innings of Double-A work.

It was a rare big day for the South Atlantic League’s worst offense. Brooklyn compiled nine hits and nine runs in a losing effort.

Benson, 24, continues to kill it at the professional level. He had three hits, including a double, on Saturday raising his High-A OPS to .969. He earned a call-up from Single-A St. Lucie after posting a .939 OPS across his first 116 professional at-bats earlier this season.

It was a disaster outing for both Carreno and Witt on Saturday.

Carreno started the game and only lasted 2 1/3 innings, waling five and allowing two hits. That resulted in four earned runs and his season ERA elevating to 7.08. The 20-year-old was called up from Single-A St. Lucie after 41 2/3 terrific innings (1.94 ERA). However, he has yet to find his footing through 20 1/3 innings at the High-A level.

Meanwhile, Witt, who is listed at 6-foot-6, now has a 9.49 ERA combined across three different levels of baseball this season (Triple-A, Double-A, and High-A).

Meggers, who was signed as an undrafated free agent out of Oregon, was the lone Met with two hits on Saturday. He has his OPS up to .667 on the season.

Ware had an extremely bizarre outing. He was the clean-up man on Saturday, pitching 3 2/3 innings after Lanthier only lasted 2 2/3 starting the game. Ware walked three and allowed five hits culminating in five runs. However, none of those five were earned.

St. Lucie committed five errors in the game.

He picked up where he left off in the Florida Complex League this year, owning a 3.43 ERA across 21 innings (10 games; two starts).

Leading the way offensively was Oramas who tripled and had three RBIs. The 17-year-old has a 1.085 OPS and .611 slugging percentage across his first 18 professional at-bats.

DSL Phillies 9 (14-10), DSL Mets Orange 8 (14-12)

TRIPLE-A: SYRACUSE METS

HITTER OF THE MONTH: RYAN CLIFFORD

Statistics: 27 G, .233/.308/.534/.842, 8 HR, 5 2B, 1 3B, 18 RBI, 12 BB, 34 SO

Ryan Clifford is doing Ryan Clifford things. After a slow start to 2026, May was a return to what we expect from him. He’s hitting for prodigious power. He’s striking out a ton. It’s what Clifford does. While the strikeout rate is improved from the 39.6% it was through April, it was still 29.1% in May. That’s still high. However, is it good enough to survive in the big leagues? That’s up for debate.

There are 19 qualified hitters striking out at least 29% of the time in the big leagues this year. Some are good, like Elly De La Cruz, Munetaka Murakami, Kyle Schwarber and Nick Kurtz. Others are struggling, like Ramón Laureano, Jorge Soler, Nolan Gorman and Austin Riley. Where does Clifford land on that scale? At this point, the only thing that will answer that question is a promotion.

PITCHER OF THE MONTH: JACK WENNINGER

Statistics: 5 G (4 GS), 22.2 IP, 19 H, 13 R (10 ER), 20 SO, 13 BB, 3.97 ERA, 1.41 WHIP

It wasn’t quite as dominant a May for Jack Wenninger as it was an April, but he was still good enough to take the crown here. The last thing Wenninger needs to do before his MLB debut is limit walks. His walk rate in May was 13.1%, about the same as his mark through April. It’s not at the point where it’s a huge, glaring concern, but it needs to improve. If Wenninger is in the zone just a little bit more, he’ll be in the big leagues sooner rather than later.

Even then, he still should the next man up for a promotion. Christian Scott and Jonah Tong, who both started the year in Syracuse with Wenninger, are in the big leagues. Zach Thornton made his big league debut earlier this season, but that was likely matchup-driven versus a lefty-heavy Nationals lineup. Wenninger is better. If a rotation spot opens up, he should be the one to get the call.

DOUBLE-A: BINGHAMTON RUMBLE PONIES

HITTER OF THE MONTH: JOSÉ RAMOS

Statistics: 24 G, .262/.392/.476/.868, 5 HR, 3 2B, 18 RBI, 16 BB, 26 SO

José Ramos is not a household name, which makes sense as a 25-year-old who was signed as a minor league free agent this offseason. (He was previously in the Dodgers organization for six years.) After a tough April, Ramos was undoubtedly Binghamton’s best hitter in May. He had 20 extra-base hits in 44 games at Triple-A for the Dodgers last season before electing free agency too, so there might be some real pop in his bat. He is old for the level, though, so the big test will be whether he can repeat his success at Triple-A whenever he is promoted.

PITCHER OF THE MONTH: JONATHAN SANTUCCI

Statistics: 6 G (6 GS), 28.2 IP, 25 H, 13 R (11 ER), 32 SO, 11 BB, 3.45 ERA, 1.26 WHIP

Jonathan Santucci is known, but might still be the most under-the-radar pitching prospect in the Mets system. He is a lefty with a fastball that has good velocity and ride, a wicked, elite slider, and a curveball and changeup that are showing promise. His only “issue” is that as a former position player, he hasn’t been pitching very long, so he’s still pretty raw. The control comes and goes, but even then, his 11.4% walk rate isn’t that big of a deal. It’s high, but it’s manageable, and should improve as he gets more experience. His ceiling is up there with the best pitching prospects in the system.

HIGH-A: BROOKLYN CYCLONES

HITTER OF THE MONTH: RONALD HERNÁNDEZ

Statistics: 22 G, .263/.371/.461/.832, 4 HR, 1 2B, 1 3B, 11 RBI, 11 BB, 27 SO

Acquired for David Robertson back in 2023, Ronald Hernández is now in his third season in Brooklyn. He’s shown flashes along the way, and this month is one of them. The 22-year-old switch-hitting catcher has some pop in his bat but can be streaky at times, and this is a good streak. Behind the plate, Hernández isn’t great. He might not be a catcher long term. But he’s athletic enough to handle first, and while it hasn’t happened yet, maybe a corner outfield spot. His bat is interesting enough to try to find him a defensive home.

PITCHER OF THE MONTH: CHANNING AUSTIN

Statistics: 4 G (4 GS), 21.2 IP, 10 H, 2 R (2 ER), 30 SO, 9 BB, 0.83 ERA, 0.88 WHIP

Brooklyn native Channing Austin is the best pitcher no one knows about in the Mets’ system. Ok, obviously some people know about him, but many probably don’t. He dominated in Brooklyn in May, so much so he earned himself a promotion for the final week. His fastball is great, and his curveball, slider and changeup are all effective. A former college reliever who threw under 60 innings combined in four years, the Mets see him as a starter. So far, they’re right.

SINGLE-A: ST. LUCIE METS

HITTER OF THE MONTH: AJ SALGADO

Statistics: 24 G, .241/.355/.481/.836, 3 HR, 4 2B, 3 3B, 13 RBI, 11 BB, 22 SO

Signed as a free agent in July 2025, AJ Salgado had a solid 23-game showing to end the season and has been good to start 2025. The extra-base hits are coming in droves, and he’s showing a solid approach to come with it. The 24-year-old is playing first base and both corner outfield spots for St. Lucie, and, given his age and production, could be ticketed for Brooklyn any day now.

PITCHER OF THE MONTH: NICOLAS CARRENO

Statistics: 5 G (2 GS), 21.2 IP, 10 H, 3 R (2 ER), 31 SO, 13 BB, 0.83 ERA, 1.06 WHIP

There’s a group of younger pitching prospects in the lower levels of the Mets’ system right now that are really, really interesting, and Nicolas Carreno might highlight that bunch. A 19-year-old lefty, Carreno sits 95 mph on his fastball. Those guys don’t grow on trees. And, incredibly, that’s not his best pitch. The 86 mph slider is the star, and batters can’t touch it. The one knock on his profile is he only throws three pitches, and two are fastballs (four-seam and sinker). If he doesn’t develop another pitch, the bullpen might be in his future. But even if that’s the case, he has the stuff to be a weapon out of the pen.

FLORIDA COMPLEX LEAGUE: FCL METS

HITTER OF THE MONTH: YOVANNY RODRIGUEZ

Statistics: 16 G, .268/.339/.589/.928, 5 HR, 1 2B, 1 3B, 15 RBI, 5 BB, 18 SO

The Mets’ most expensive signing in the 2024 IFA class, Yovanny Rodriguez had an okay debut season in the Dominican Summer League and a much better repeat year in 2025, prompting his move stateside this year. So far, he’s been up to the challenge. Despite the large signing bonus, he’s not one of the organization’s premier prospects. Repeating the DSL will cause that. With that said, the catcher is still just 19, so it’s very encouraging to see him start his 2026 in this manner. He hasn’t been perfect, but he’s been good.

PITCHER OF THE MONTH: JOSE GUEVARA

Statistics: 4 G (3 GS), 18.1 IP, 12 H, 9 R (8 ER), 25 SO, 9 BB, 3.93 ERA, 1.15 WHIP

Jose Guevara is missing bats, limiting free passes, and overall just doing most of the things pitchers need to do to be successful. At 21 years old, he’s a bit old for the level, so the next test for him will be Single-A. After a couple of recent promotions from St. Lucie to Brooklyn, Guevara could be next in line to fill the vacated spots. He had a few games in both spots last year but didn’t have much success, so it will be interesting to see if round two goes any better.

The left-handed hitting middle infielder stumbled out of the gate, starting 0-for-26 in his first nine games. But on June 14, he went 1-for-3 and would soon take off on his way to being named the DSL Prospect of the Year by Minor League Baseball. He hit three home runs in a game – twice. In another game, he stole four bases.

Peña, who will be 18 on Oct. 19, completed his first professional season with a .292/.421/.528/.949 slash line, nine homers, 33 RBIs, 13 doubles and a triple in 223 plate appearances. He stole 21 bases in 25 tries. He walked and struck out an even 36 times.

Defensively, he needs work. He committed 14 errors in 43 starts at shortstop and one in nine starts at second base. The Dominican Republic native is estimated to debut in the majors in 2030.

The Mets field two DSL teams and Peña helped lead DSL Mets Orange to a 31-25 record. They finished fourth in the South.

Heriberto Rincon hit .314/.383/.438 with two homers and 34 stolen bases in 40 attempts. The 19-year-old outfielder led Mets Orange in batting average. Outfielder Adolfo Miranda, 18, of Cuba, hit five homers, drove in 29, and slashed .290/.353/.473 in 187 plate appearances. Catcher Josmir Reyes hit .300/.426/.480 with four homers and 28 RBIs in 50 games.

Yunior Amparo played in 30 games for Mets Orange and 20 for Mets Blue (19-37, sixth place, Southeast). The 19-year-old who plays first, third, and the outfield was one of two Met position players to make the DSL All-Star team (picked midseason) along with Miranda. He hit .312/.428/.475 with four homers and 16 stolen bases.

Catcher Yovanny Rodriguez slashed .331/.446/.493 with two homers and 26 RBIs in 168 plate appearances (119 for Mets Blue). He led Mets Blue in OPS (.963) among players with at least 100 at-bats, and MLB Pipeline ranks him the No. 24 prospect in the organization. The only other DSL prospect on MLB Pipeline’s top 30 rankings is Peña at No. 10.

Infielder Yorber Semprun hit .307/.386/.409 with one homer and 15 steals in 41 games. Outfielder Justin Ramirez hit .302/.413/.503 with five homers and 11 steals in 49 games.

On the mound, Osiris Calvo was the only Met pitcher to earn an All-Star nod. The 6-foot-4 lefty went 5-1 with a 2.51 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and struck out 45 in 43 innings pitched for Mets Orange.

Right-hander Jean Brito, 19, of Venezuela, was 1-5 with a 2.84 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 44 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out 36 and walked 21. Righty Abner Meza was 4-3 with a 2.79 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. He fanned 32 in 38 2/3 innings pitched.

Julio Gonzalez, an 18-year-old right-hander from Mexico, pitched to a 2.55 ERA and 0.93 WHIP over 35 1/3 innings with 30 strikeouts. Reliever Jamdrick Cornelia struck out 31 in 32 2/3 innings while posting a 2.76 ERA.

The Mets named Calvo the organization’s DR Academy Pitcher of the Year. Peña was the Player of the Year.

Kodai Senga didn’t have his sharpest stuff Saturday, as the 32-year-old allowed three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings of work. Senga is looking to rejoin a Mets rotation that’s been battered badly by injuries since he went down with a hamstring strain on June 12 against the Nationals.

Following him, Anthony Nunez earned his first win of the season following the walk-off in the ninth.

Jonathan Santucci dazzled through six scoreless innings as he struck out nine and walked three. Since May 16, Santucci ranks fourth among all minor-league pitchers with a 1.35 ERA, going 5-0 over nine games with a WHIP of 0.94.

Yovanny Rodriguez

Overview

Yovanny Rodriguez, MLB Pipeline’s No. 7 international free agent in the 2024 class, signed with the Mets for $2.85 million last January. His bonus was the largest the club handed out during that period, serving as a ringing endorsement of the Venezuelan catcher’s skill set and potential.

He made his professional debut on June 3 for DSL Mets Orange, where he would remain for the entire season. Rodriguez ultimately played in 44 games, 33 of which included appearances behind the plate while also serving as the designated hitter in 12. He concluded the year with a 101 wRC+, 18.8% strikeout rate and 16.6% walk rate while pulling the ball at a 47.8% clip.

Perhaps the most encouraging development for the Mets and Rodriguez was his strong finish to the season, as he slashed .341/.400/.568 with 13 RBIs over 50 plate appearances in August.

His defensive showing from a strictly statistical perspective was a bit rough, allowing 74 stolen bases in comparison to throwing out 10 base runners while committing six errors in 253 innings. Rodriguez’s struggles in that facet aren’t particularly concerning at this point, however, considering he was 17-years-old and thus is an obvious work in progress.

In May 2024, FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen wrote that Rodriguez is, “built to withstand the rigors of a full season of catching,” while further stating that he, “has big pull power and arm strength.”

2025 Outlook

Rodriguez still has a ways to go before realizing his major league dreams, but he could certainly take significant strides towards making them a reality in 2025. He’ll likely see time in the DSL to begin the year, though he could eventually make his way to the Florida Complex League or even Single-A St. Lucie if he performs well, much like fellow backstop Daiverson Gutierrez accomplished last season.

Yovanny Rodriguez was the Mets’ top international free agent signing in 2023, receiving a $2.85 million contract. A right-handed hitting catcher from Venezuela, Rodriguez was ranked sixth overall in the class per MLB Pipeline.

“Rodriguez has a chance to become the best player in this class, and it’s easy to see why,” Pipeline said. “An advanced catching prospect with some pop and skills, Rodriguez has the potential to be a star on both sides of the ball.”

Offensively, Rodriguez has shown a good ability for contact, repeating the process with consistency. At present, he exhibits some power, but with like with most young prospects, he has room to add more strength which will carry over more and give him more power potentially. As it is right now, it’s more hit over power.

The primary focus for the 2024 season for Rodriguez will be to get experience behind the plate and at-bats. Considering he will play the entirety of the year as a 17 year-old, growth will be the primary concern. Since he has no professional at-bats yet, everything right now is based on potential and scouting reports. The Mets have the likes of Kevin Parada, Ronald Hernandez and Christopher Suero in the system, but Rodriguez is at least half a decade away from reaching the majors. There will be no rush on his development.

2024 Role

Rodriguez is currently slated to begin with the Mets Dominican Summer League team—and barring an extremely aggressive push or assignment, will likely spend the entirety of the year down there. He’s an exciting prospect, but the aim is to get his feet wet this season. It might be another year before he comes stateside.

In his free agency update on Wednesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN wrote that Japanese left-hander Shōta Imanaga could receive a contract of at least $100 million. The deadline for teams to negotiate with the Imanaga is on Jan. 11.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com predicts that Imanaga will ultimately sign with the New York Mets.

The Mets announced that on Tuesday, Ronny Mauricio underwent right knee reconstruction ACL surgery performed by Dr. David Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. A typical return-to-play timeline from this procedure is 8-12 months; Mauricio suffered this injury while trying to steal second base during a Dominican Winter League game on December 10.

Mets prospect Jeremy Rodriguez was mentioned as one of the six most impressive debuts from the 2023 international class in an article from Jim Callis and Sam Dykstra of MLB.com. Rodriguez was acquired from the Diamondbacks in return for Tommy Pham at the 2023 trade deadline.

The Mets are expected to give out two of the top 50 international free agency bonuses when the class officially starts on January 15th, per Ben Badler of Baseball America. Wander Franco‘s legal troubles continue to trudge on, as on Wednesday, prosecutors in the Dominican Republic accused him of commercial sexual exploitation and money laundering following allegations of a relationship with a minor, per The AP. The story alleges that Franco paid off the mother of the underage girl he was in a relationship with. 

The Dodgers and Brewers completed a trade on Wednesday as Los Angeles acquired minor league left-handed pitcher Justin Chambers and a player to be named later or cash and, in return, sent Milwaukee left-handed pitcher Bryan Hudson, per Dodgers Insider. While only being a 20th round pick in the 2023 draft, Chambers received a bonus that is usually slotted to a fourth round selection; he still received that having undergone Tommy John surgery. 

The Arizona Diamondbacks added some infield depth as they agreed to a deal with veteran shortstop Kevin Newman, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post. 

Korean relief pitcher Woo-Suk Go and the San Diego Padres agreed to a two-year, $4.5 million deal, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Go is expected to be the Padres opening day closer.

The Boston Red Sox officially announced their signing of starting pitcher Lucas Giolito to a one-year deal worth $19 million, with a player option for 2025; in a corresponding move, DFA’d right-handed pitcher Mauricio Llovera. Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com noted that there is a conditional option for 2026: if Giolito throws more than 140 innings in 2025, then there is a $14 million club option. If he throws less than 140 innings in 2025, then there is a $19 million mutual option.

Cincinnati Reds outfield prospect Héctor Rodríguez was named LIDOM (Dominican Professional Baseball League) Rookie of the Year. The 19-year-old put up a slash line of .309/.344/.487 with 17 extra-base hits and led the league with four triples.

After eyeing Jordan Montgomery for most of the off-season, the Yankees are reportedly also considering reigning Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell after missing out on Yoshinobu Yamamoto, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
