Ronny Mauricio is on a four-game hitting streak since joining Syracuse on the 18th of the month and has already tallied eight hits to begin his path back to New York. Meanwhile, Hayden Senger is riding an eight-game hit streak dating back to May 10 and smacked his second homer of the season. Joey Meneses hit a run-scoring double and now has RBIs in back-to-back games.

Pitching 6 2/3 innings, and giving up three earned runs on five hits while walking just one, Blade Tidwell had a strong showing on Saturday. Compared to his start in St. Louis a couple of weeks ago, when control problems and a few unfortunate hits limited his effectiveness, Tidwell displayed better command even though he wasn’t dominant.

The second game of Saturday’s doubleheader treated the Syracuse offense much better. Joey Meneses led the way with getting on base in all plate appearances while Luke Ritter and Luis De Los Santos plated two runs each.

Ritter has largely struggled this season, after being one of the more consistent bats in the Mets’ system over the last few seasons. He has his OPS up to a season-high .640.

Dedniel Núñez also turned in a scoreless outing, lowering his Triple-A ERA to 2.92.

Wyatt Young played hero ball on Sunday, delivering a clutch walk-off two-run single that scored Omar De Los Santos and D’Andre Smith to seal the win. The 25-year-old infielder has been swinging a hot bat lately, collecting five hits over his last two games.

Southpaw Zach Thornton was masterful on Saturday, pitching six perfect innings and dicing up six along the way, and has allowed two earned runs over his last three starts. Alex Carrillo held down the fort and kept the game within reach.

Frankie Montas had a tough season debut, surrendering two earned runs over just 1 1/3 innings while walking two and striking out one. It was a shaky start for the veteran right-handed starter, who is still working his way back from a lat injury that has kept him sidelined for most of spring training.

Nick Roselli recorded three RBIs Saturday, including a two-run single, which could hopefully turn the season around for the 22-year-old who was selected in the 11th round of the draft last year. Simon Juan collected his sixth hit in as many games, while driving in a run.

Jose Guevara turned in a solid bounce-back outing on Sunday, striking out six over four innings while allowing just two hits and two earned runs. Elwis Mijares had a solid professional debut, striking out three and allowing just one run, flashing the swing-and-miss stuff that could make him an intriguing arm down the road.

What a Triple-A debut for Pintaro, who has risen through three minor league levels (High-A, Double-A, and now Triple-A) since being brought into the organization in mid-June. While he did walk four batters, he struck out Worcester batters at an efficient pace while stranding the baserunners to produce a scoreless Triple-A debut.

Hawkins joined the large group of recently promoted players; Saturday was his Double-A debut. He gave a solid performance for the Ponies, going an inning short of a quality start.

In Brooklyn, Hawkins was used as a spot-starter/longman in the bullpen. It will be interesting to see how he is used in the future.

It has been an eventful last couple of days for Benge. The first-round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft homered for the second straight game when he hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the first. Later in the game, his RBI double in the seventh was part of a six-run inning that ultimately gave St. Lucie the win. Ewing ended that inning with a two-run single to give him six RBIs in the last three games.

A Syracuse infielder continued his good Triple-A season with another home run. Meanwhile, Binghamton’s starter had one of his longest outings of the year.
It was a great day at the ballpark for Bradley Jr. on Wednesday. He had the RBI single in the top of the first that got the Mets on the board and picked up a three-hit day. Baty added on the second run with a mammoth, 440-foot solo home run in the seventh. He has homered three times in the last four games and has driven in five runs over that span.

It was not great news for the rest of the Syracuse lineup. As a team, they went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. In addition, Drew Gilbert, who just got back into the Syracuse lineup, ended up leaving the game in the first inning after getting hit by a pitch in a difficult area.

St. Lucie managed to have only five hits in Wednesday’s game, but that would be all they needed to record the win. They scored four of their five runs in the top of the second, which included a two-run single by Henríquez and an RBI double by Hernandez. Hernandez has had two multi-hit performances in the last three games. Ewing ended up all over the bases. He had an RBI single in the sixth, had three walks, and even stole a base.

The Mets had little going on offensively in Sunday’s game, as they recorded just two hits – both singles by Young, over the course of the entire game. They did walk seven times in the game, allowing them to push across three runs in the seventh inning: there were two walks and two hit batters before a single out could be recorded in the inning. The other two runs scored on a Young single and a forceout. After a rough season with both Brooklyn and Binghamton, Palmer has surprisingly come alive with his promotion to Triple-A and now has an 11-game on-base streak.

Chacin put up a solid if lackluster pitching line over four innings on Sunday afternoon. He gave up a home run in the first inning and a RBI single in the second, but otherwise pitched to contact without giving up any more hits. Griffin struggled in almost every way, allowing 11 baserunners and needing 82 pitches to complete three innings of work. Over three appearances with Syracuse this month, he has a 10.38 ERA. Lavender continues to post enormous strikeout numbers: over 54 1/3 innings pitched this season, he has struck out 86 batters, good for a 14.25 rate per nine innings.

Even though the Triple-A season will be over after Sunday’s game, Syracuse Mets’ (61-84) outfielder Jaylen Palmer is going into the offseason on a strong note. The 23-year-old, and 22nd-round pick in 2018, went 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI in Syracuse’s 6-4 loss to the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (72-75) on Saturday.

Palmer ended up getting Syracuse on the board in the bottom of the fourth when his RBI single drove in Brandon McIlwain and cut the then RailRiders lead to 5-1. He has multiple hits in three of the last five games and he has driven in at least one run in four of the last five games.

The Mets were playing catchup from the beginning as right-handed starter Justin Jarvis (0-7, 8.79 ERA) was unable to get the big outs when he needed them. He allowed a two-run home run to Carlos Narvaez in the third, a two-run double by Franchy Cordero, and another RBI double by Narvaez in the fourth.

On the night, Jarvis went 3 1/3 innings, allowed five runs on nine hits, walked two, and struck out three on 78 pitches (48 strikes) in the loss. The 23-year-old right-hander who the Mets got from the Milwaukee Brewers in the Mark Canha deal will end September going 0-3 with a 9.64 ERA in four starts.

Syracuse tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the eighth when Wyatt Young’s RBI single cut the lead to three. However, Scranton Wilkes-Barre got one back in the following inning on an RBI double by Jake Lamb against Sam Coonrod.

In the ninth, the Mets did cut the four-run deficit in half thanks to an RBI double by Daniel Palka (60th RBI of the year) and Danny Mendick scoring thanks to an error on a ball hit by Carlos Cortes. The Mets had the winning run at the plate, but Young flew out to right to end the threat. On the night, Syracuse went 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

Scranton Wilkes-Barre did have a pitcher making a rehab appearance starting the game in RHP Frankie Montas. Montas threw two scoreless innings, allowed one hit, and struck out two.

On a positive note, the Mets got a strong pitching performance by right-handed reliever William Woods in relief of Jarvis. Woods threw 3 2/3 hitless innings, walked a batter, and struck out five on 50 pitches (36 strikes). The 24-year-old ended his September having a scoreless outing in five of his last six appearances.

Syracuse will wrap up their season on Sunday at 1:05 p.m ET at NBT Bank Stadium. RHP Clayton Beeter (2-5, 5.32) will start for Scranton Wilkes-Barre against RHP José Chacin (1-0, 5.81) for the Mets.

In what was a rain-shortened game, the Mets did not have a single extra-base hit, but they got the runs that mattered. Jaylen Palmer had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game.
The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (69-59) had their game against the Hartford Yard Goats (55-72) postponed due to rain. They will complete Friday’s suspended game as part of a doubleheader with the continuation of the game beginning at 11:00 am ET (Binghamton is up 7-0 in the top of the fourth).

Williams continued his impressive season on Saturday by not only hitting his seventh home run at High-A in the bottom of the third, but he also drew his 100th walk of the year, which makes him the second teenager to accomplish that milestone since 2005.

There was more history at Coney Island later in the inning when Consuegra hit his 22nd home run of the year, which tied a Cyclones record for the most home runs in a single-season.

With Jersey Shore splitting their doubleheader with Hudson Valley on Saturday, it means that all the Cyclones need to do Sunday is win or get a Jersey Shore loss to clinch a postseason berth.

The Blue Rocks scored their only run of the game on an RBI single in the second inning. As for Garcia, the 20-year-old picked up his first High-A win and he has gone five innings in two of his three outings with the Cyclones. The five strikeouts were the most he has had in an outing since August 18.

The five St. Lucie pitchers who appeared in Saturday’s win combined to strike out 15 of the 33 batters they faced. Ziegler ended up making his 2023 debut after recovering from offseason surgery on his elbow and a torn right quad. The 20-year-old was impressive as he struck out all three hitters he faced.

McLean followed him up with his second outing of the year and the third rounder this year had his first scoreless outing of his career. Orellana was the bulk pitcher and ended up striking out eight batters for the second consecutive appearance.

Finally, Hawkins had another scoreless appearance to give the undrafted free agent out of Washington State five consecutive scoreless outings to start his career (8 innings pitched).

The Rumble Ponies kept their winning ways going on Wednesday as they have won 14 of their last 17 games. Binghamton has a six-game lead over Portland and Reading for a playoff spot. Acuña had his best game as a member of the Mets organization. He had a solo home run to lead off the game, then hit a solo shot in the fourth.

This list of ten prospects to watch entering the 2023 minor league season will include players destined to debut for the Mets (or another team) but are currently in the periphery of prospect relevance and outside of the Top 10 or 15 Mets prospects.

Due to stand-out performances, injuries, trades, poor performance by others, or other factors,. some of these lower or unranked players will make their way to the big club to the surprise of everybody, potentially including themselves. Let’s dive in.

Hunter Parsons (Right-Handed Reliever)

Hunter Parsons had an unbelievable start to the 2022 season, opening with 15.2 scoreless innings in Brooklyn before being promoted to Binghamton on June 1. He had his ups and downs in AA last year, finishing the year with a 5.31 ERA, a league-average 23.7 strikeout percentage, and an elevated 14.7 walk rate for the Rumble Ponies. After working on his mechanics this offseason, he has seen a velocity uptick, averaging over 94 mph in his last spring training outing (2022 avg. was 92.0). He is also throwing a much-improved slider after throwing a slower, small sweeper last year at around 80 mph.

His current slider is around 83 mph with 7 inches of vertical break and -7 inches of horizontal break, a unique shape and one likely to be effective against right-handed hitters. He fared well in big-league spring training games, working 1.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts and no runs. Look for him to be in Triple-A by July.

Wyatt Young (Infielder)

Wyatt Young had an incredible start to the 2022 season as well, playing just five games in High-A Brooklyn before being promoted to Syracuse to fill a spot while the Triple-A team was down an infielder. Surprisingly, he was incredibly successful in that Triple-A stint, hitting .352 with a .883 OPS in 71 trips to the plate. When Syracuse no longer needed Young as an extra infielder, he earned himself a promotion to Double-A instead of returning to Brooklyn. He came back down to earth in Binghamton but put up a respectable .733 OPS, a 107 RPG+, and a 112 TM (Trackman) RPG+. His Syracuse TM RPG+ was 114, or 14% above league average, which takes into account his batted ball data and exit velocities.

Despite the statistical differences he had from Triple-A to Double-A, he was an above-average hitter (by over 10%) at both of the minors’ top levels, even more impressive considering it was his first full season of professional baseball. Young should be a utility starter in Triple-A by year-end.

Luis Moreno (Right-Handed Starter)

Luis Moreno is becoming more of a prospect, but after starting his 2022 season in Low-A St. Lucie, he is likely going to be in Double-A for the bulk of the 2023 season. Last year, he took massive steps forward by canning his four-seam fastball, adding a plus two-seam fastball and relying on his high spin on breaking balls. He dropped his walk rate by over 7% from 2021 to 2022 and was above league average in xERA at both the A and A+ levels.

There is still ground to be gained, however, as he posted below-average K rates, leading to an addition of a high-velocity cutter (avg. of 90.6 in his last spring training outing) that should be a swing-and-miss pitch.

Daison Acosta (Right-Handed Reliever)

Daison Acosta had a turbulent 2022 season, starting off horribly as a starter in his first game action since 2019. He had Tommy John surgery in 2021 and had good velocity in his return (low to mid-90s) but struggled to find the zone and get deep into games. After several early exits as a starter, including outings where he failed to make it out of the first inning, he had to make a change.

The Mets put him in the bullpen, where he flourished to finish the season. His confidence and mound presence were day and night after taking the back-end reliever role for the surging Brooklyn Cyclones. He finished the year with an 85 xERA, 15% better than the league average, and brought his ERA down from 7.50 to 4.84 in the last two months of the season. Expect him to start as a back-end reliever in Double-A.

Brandon McIlwain (Outfielder)

Brandon McIlwain had a great start in Brooklyn, earning a promotion to Double-A halfway through the season. While he was underwhelming in ‘Bingo with a 73 RPG+ (runs per game plus), he did hit the ball harder than the results showed, getting close to league average with a 92 TM RPG+. He is an incredible athlete, and more time spent on the baseball field can only help the former two-sport Division 1 athlete. His exit velocities have been well north of 100 mph in spring training and he is a sleeper who could continue his ascent in ’23.

Trey McLoughlin (Right-Handed Reliever)

After spending the offseason at Driveline, Trey McLoughlin showed up ready to go for minor league camp. He allowed just one run in 3.1 innings pitched this spring in four outings and saw over a one-mile-per-hour increase on his heater. He has been sitting north of 93 mph this spring after averaging 91.9 a year ago. If he can limit the long ball (9 home runs allowed in 51.2 IP in 2022) then he will continue to make steady progress level-to-level.

Hayden Senger (Catcher)

After spending the fall of 2021 in the Arizona Fall League, hopes were high for Hayden Senger entering 2022. He is a plus-defensive catcher who showed flashes of hitting that gave hope he could be in the show sooner rather than later. He regressed in Double-A from ’21 to ’22 at the plate and managed just a .675 OPS there last year. This year will be crucial for him to show that he still has potential at the plate, but being a depth option as a defensive catcher will get him opportunities. He’s a couple of injuries away from being in the big leagues, but crazier things have happened.

JT Schwartz (First Baseman)

JT Schwartz‘s 2022 season should be considered a massive win for the Mets. He stayed healthy after an injury-ridden college campaign, struggled early on and adjusted well to have a strong finish and overall product from the campaign. He was an above-average High-A hitter at the age of 22 (109 wRC+) and played in 112 games. He had a blistering second half, and if his power numbers increase, he will be a good upper minors contributor this year with MLB depth potential in the near future.

Sammy Tavarez (Right-Handed Reliever)

Tavarez is a wild card. His fastball reaches 100 mph, and his curveball is a knee-buckler, but his command is as inconsistent as it comes. (He has a 20% walk rate in the minor leagues.) He could boom or bust as he makes his way to Double-A this year, but a ridiculous .516 OPS against in 2022 shows that he has the stuff to compete at higher levels. A cutter or smaller slider could help him get in the zone more as he is primarily throws his fastball and curveball. He has over 28 inches of vertical separation between the two pitches.

Nolan Clenney (Right-Handed Reliever)

Nolan Clenney is a mid-90s right-handed reliever with an impressive mid-to-upper 80s slider. He also has great command. He struggled early on in 2022 but put up a 31.2 K% and 7.5 BB%. He’s also been at least 17% better than league average in each of his three stops in affiliate baseball. He is on the older side for the levels he’s played in at nearly 27 but is showing no signs of being slowed by the play at those levels. He should be a mainstay in the Binghamton bullpen, and as he increases slider usage, his attractiveness to the organization will only increase.
