The Mets are optioning Tobias Myers, Will Sammon of The Athletic reported Friday night. Sammon cited the Mets’ need of a fresh pitcher even after a day off on Thursday.

Myers has a 4.05 ERA in 20 games for the Mets this season. He was one of seven pitchers used Friday, allowing two runs in an inning of work.

The Mets (24-33) defeated the Marlins (26-32) 9-7 in 10 innings on Friday. New York jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Miami slowly but surely crawled back into the game before tying it 7-7 in the eighth inning. MJ Melendez delivered the walk-off blow in the bottom of the 10th, a two-run homer, to put the game to bed and give the Mets their second straight win.

Jorge Polanco played in his second rehab game on Friday for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and he had an extremely encouraging game. Polanco recorded a three-run home run and two walks, reaching base a total of three times. Polanco has played in just 14 games for the Mets this year and had little impact when healthy, but the Mets are certainly hoping he’s back on the major league squad before too long.

Prior to Friday’s game, Carlos Mendoza spoke to the media and reiterated that David Peterson will be moving to the bullpen. Mendoza also said Francisco Alvarez could begin a rehab assignment as early as next week.

Nolan McLean hosted a clinic on Long Island where he spent time meeting and teaching little leaguers.

It was a brilliant effort all around, but it was the pitching that really stood out. Tylor Megill looked great, tossing 5 1/3 scoreless innings, while Reed Garrett, A.J. Minter, and Max Kranick combined to strike out six in 3 2/3 scoreless innings. The Mets’ bullpen in particular has been phenomenal this year, and they were again in the first game in front of the home crowd.

The Rockies are calling up top prospect Chase Dollander, who will make his major league debut on Sunday. Dollander, the ninth overall pick in the 2023 draft, is listed as MLB Pipelines’ No. 24 overall prospect.

The Rangers placed starting pitcher Jack Leiter on the 15-day injured list with a blister on his right middle finger. Leiter looked phenomenal in his last start and has a 0.90 ERA in two starts so far this season. In a corresponding move, the Rangers called up former National Patrick Corbin.

The Yankees announced that they reinstated Devin Williams from the paternity list. In a corresponding move, the team designated Adam Ottavino for assignment. Ottavino was just recently signed and pitched in two games for the Yankees.

The Braves re-signed Jesse Chavez to a minor-league deal, per the transaction wire. Chavez pitched two innings in a game for the Braves early this season and was later DFA’d, but he now returns to the team on a new deal.

While neither of the starting pitching options in this game would inspire much confidence, the offense was nearly nonexistent for the entire game. Megill stepped in for Paul Blackburn, who was originally scheduled to start but experienced back tightness before the game, and he had one of his best starts of the season.

Megill got into trouble early, loading the bases in the first inning, but after a 30-pitch effort, he escaped the inning before cruising through the rest of his start. Megill went six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out nine. It was an unexpectedly dominant display for Megill, who has been unusable for most of the year.

On the Blue Jays’ side, Ryan Burr entered play with a 4.44 ERA in 26 appearances, primarily as a reliever. He kept the Mets off the board with two perfect innings out of the gate before making way for Luis Frías, who followed with 1 1/3 perfect innings of his own. The Mets finally did some damage against lefty Ryan Yarbrough in the fourth inning when J.D. Martinez followed a walk and a hit-by-pitch with a ground ball single to get the Mets on the board 1-0.

Both offenses remained dormant until the seventh inning, with both teams having just one hit each. That changed when Danny Young and José Buttó combined to allow two hit-by-pitches, two singles, and a sacrifice fly to surrender the lead and rob Tylor Megill of what would have been a much-deserved win.

More important, however, was that the Mets now trailed by a run with two innings to play and only one hit on the night. If there’s one thing about these Mets, you can never count them out. Just when the momentum shifted in favor of the Blue Jays, the Mets were able to manufacture two runs with some small ball and poor pitch execution from the Blue Jays.

Jesse Winker led off the top of the eighth inning with a pinch-hit walk before Francisco Alvarez dribbled an infield single, with the pinch-runner Tyrone Taylor advancing to third on a throwing error. Francisco Lindor then walked to load the bases with no outs. Taylor scored in the next at-bat on a wild pitch to tie the game before the newly acquired Eddy Alvarez came around to score on a passed ball from catcher Brian Serven. All of a sudden, the Mets were right back in front.

Ryne Stanek was Carlos Mendoza’s answer for the eighth inning, and Stanek responded by halting the late-inning chaos, striking out the side twice on fastballs and finally on a splitter. Stanek has pitched a scoreless outing in six of his last seven appearances after a rough start to his Mets tenure.

Edwin Díaz pitched the ninth inning, and after retiring the first two batters, he allowed an infield single to Ernie Clement before Starling Marte caught a hard-hit fly ball on the warning track to put an end to the game. The Mets won 3-2, improved to 79-65 on the year, and went back up to 1.0 games over the Braves for the final Wild Card spot.

Statistic of the Game: 16 Straight Retired

Tylor Megill didn’t allow a single baserunner after the first inning, retiring 16 in a row to finish his night. For a pitcher who has battled walk issues and constant traffic on the basepaths throughout this year and his entire career, it was a fantastic sight to see Megill work through the Blue Jays’ lineup with ease for the final 5 1/3 innings of his outing.

Player of the Game

It wasn’t announced until early Monday that Paul Blackburn would miss his start and Tylor Megill would step in. Nobody could have expected this kind of start from Megill, who looked like an ace rather than someone who appeared set to be demoted for good.

On Deck

The Mets and Blue Jays continue their series at the Rogers Centre on Tuesday evening. David Peterson (9-1, 2.75 ERA) will take the mound against former Met Chris Bassitt (9-13, 4.30 ERA). Both pitchers have made just one career appearance against their opponent, with Peterson allowing two runs in five innings in his only start against the Blue Jays and Bassitt tossing 7 2/3 shutout innings in his only start against the Mets.

First pitch is at 7:07 p.m. ET, and the game will air on SNY.

Brett Baty has crushed Triple-A pitching since his demotion from the big league club – he has 18 hits, five home runs, four doubles, and a 1.162 OPS in 12 games. Although it is in a hitter-friendly Triple-A park, it is a huge positive sign to see Baty lifting the ball and slugging after his struggles in the majors.

José Buttó has bounced back significantly after his command issues earlier in June – he posted three straight starts of allowing two or fewer runs while striking 17 batters and walking seven in that span. Buttó’s only blemish was allowing a home run to the newly promoted Dylan Crews. The Nationals’ top prospect has homered in consecutive games to start his Triple-A career.  The bullpen was fantastic behind Buttó, allowing only one hit and two walks in the game’s final three innings.

McLean has allowed eight home runs and 19 earned runs in his six starts in Double-A.

The Cyclones fell to Jersey Shore in extra innings 3-2 in their Friday night duel. It was an exciting finish to the ball game, with Brooklyn down to their final out in the bottom of the ninth inning down 3-2, when William Lugo hit a game-tying solo homer to send the game to extras. While the BlueClaws managed to bring around the free runner, the Cyclones stranded the tying run on third base, ending the game.

Julian Smith pitched a spotless seventh inning, allowing the Cyclones to close the deficit and take the game to extras.

Kranick was perfect in his Mets debut, allowing no baserunners in two innings and collecting two strikeouts. Following his outing, Kranick said of playing for the Mets: “I love it. It’s my favorite team growing up… communication’s great, coaching, all that stuff. It’s pretty fun.” Auditioning for a spot on the major league roster, Kranick certainly made a great impression in his first outing for the Mets.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed this after the game, saying “I thought he was really good. The way he attacked the zone and the way he uses his pitches… overall, I thought he did a really good job.”

Josiah Gray was dominant in his two innings of work, but the Mets offense woke up immediately following his departure. The big blow came in the third inning when Trayce Thompson cleared the bases with a grand slam to put the Mets ahead 4-0. Thompson came through again on his next turn at-bat in the fifth inning with an RBI single to extend the Met lead to five.

Thompson spoke following his performance about what has stood out about the Mets compared to other teams he’s been with: “I’ve been extremely impressed with how available everything is, and everyone seems like they’re there to help you. ‘Cause at the end of the day, it’s about helping the New York Mets win… extremely impressive on all fronts.”

In addition to Thompson, the Mets got multi-hit games from Pete Alonso, who finished 2-for-2 with two doubles and a walk, and Luisangel Acuña, who picked up his first hits of the spring. The only other Mets run to score outside of Thompson’s at-bats was on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Zack Short in the ninth inning.

Following three combined scoreless innings out of the bullpen from Tyler Stuart and Sean Reid-Foley, Eric Orze and Cam Robinson surrendered a combined three runs, managing to keep the Nationals in the game late. Fortunately, though, the Nationals were unable to keep up the attack, and the Mets hung on to win the game by a score of 6-3.

Positive Prospect Performances

The Mets got contributions from many of their top prospects in this game. Luisangel Acuña picked up his first two hits of spring training, both opposite field singles; Tyler Stuart threw two clean innings, allowing a hit, a walk, and recording one strikeout; Jett Williams legged out an infield single and scored a run; and Drew Gilbert didn’t have a giant impact, but he did record a walk to get on base for the first time this spring. The Mets have a lot of prospects to be excited about, and this group showed why during the victory.

Players of the Game: Max Kranick & Trayce Thompson

Kranick and Thompson were the two best players on the field today. Kranick is questionable to make the Opening Day roster, and Thompson’s chances are even less likely. Still, they put in outstanding performances with Kranick throwing two perfect innings and Thompson finishing the day 2-for-3 with a grand slam and an RBI single, accounting for five of the Mets’ six runs.

On Deck

The Mets play their fourth game of spring training on Tuesday at 1:10 p.m. ET against the Miami Marlins. The Mets will travel back home to Clover Park in Port St. Lucie for the game, with Adrian Houser projected to start in his first outing in a Mets uniform. The game will be broadcast on SNY.

The key to the Mets’ victory was a strong pitching performance by Joey Lucchesi, who made his first big league start since May 13. After loading the bases in the first inning, he managed to escape the inning scoreless and pitched effectively over the rest of his outing.

After a strenuous first inning, Lucchesi retired 12 in a row, generating lots of easy ground balls over that stretch. His streak of retired batters was broken on the first hit in Masyn Winn‘s MLB career.

Lucchesi exited the game with runners on second and third with two outs in the sixth inning. Phil Bickford relieved him and walked Jordan Walker to load the bases before striking out Alec Burleson to keep the Cardinals off the board. That ensured Lucchesi would end his night with a scoreless performance, which dropped his season ERA almost a full run from 4.43 to 3.54.

Offensively, the Mets put themselves ahead right away before putting the game away late. Brandon Nimmo led off the game by taking the lefty Zack Thompson deep, socking his career-high 18th home run of the year to give the Mets and Lucchesi an early lead to play with. Jeff McNeil added to the lead in the third inning by knocking an RBI single up the middle, scoring Lindor from second base to extend the lead to 2-0.

Both offenses remained quiet until the seventh inning when the Mets blew the game open. Still up by just two, the Mets loaded the bases with nobody out. A fielder’s choice off the bat of Francisco Lindor, with a questionable throw home by the young shortstop Winn, brought home a run before Francisco Álvarez hit an opposite-field RBI single to make it a 4-0 game.

Jeff McNeil then unloaded a three-run shot over the right field fence, his sixth home run of the year, to extend the lead to 7-0. That home run was McNeil’s third over his last 14 games after he had just three home runs all season before that. He has been swinging the bat much better of late, having entered this game batting .288 in the month of August.

Sam Coonrod and Dennis Santana combined to pitch the final three innings after Bickford managed to escape the sixth inning without allowing a run. Coonrod set down the Cardinals in order in the seventh inning before Santana gave up the shutout with two outs in the ninth inning on a Richie Palacios double. Still, Santana stayed on to record the final out and give the Mets a 7-1 win.

The Mets have now won five out of their six last games, improving their record to 57-66. They have now clinched at least a series tie with the Cardinals with two games still to play before heading to Atlanta to take on the Braves for the final time this season.

Player of the Game

Brandon Nimmo gets player of the game honors in this game. Not only did he set a new career-high for home runs in a season with 18, but he also finished the game 3-for-5 while extending his hitting streak to ten games as he continues to look scorching hot at the plate.

On Deck

The Mets will look to secure a series win against the Cardinals on Saturday evening, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET. Kodai Senga (9-6, 3.30 ERA) will look to continue his stellar rookie campaign as he takes the mound for the Mets, while Miles Mikolas (6-8, 4.27 ERA) gets the start for the Cardinals. The game will be broadcast on PIX11.

The Mets defeated the Padres 7-5 in ten innings on Friday night for the team’s sixth consecutive win, the longest winning streak of the season. Justin Verlander notched a quality start despite a shaky beginning to the game, while Francisco Álvarez recorded his first career four-hit game as he remains hot at the plate. The win puts the Mets at 42-46, just four games under .500 with the All-Star break imminent.

Will Sammon and Eno Sarris of The Athletic wrote about why hitters are hitting sliders better than ever in the pitch tracking era.

The Yankees activated their star free agent signing from this past offseason, Carlos Rodón, from the injured list. Rodón made his Yankee debut on Friday night and gave up two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched.

The Yankees also placed Jake Bauers on the injured list, recalling Franchy Cordero to take his place on the roster.

The Tigers designated infielder Jonathan Schoop for assignment. In 55 games this year, he had been struggling immensely with a .550 OPS.

The Athletics placed MLB stolen base leader Esteury Ruiz on the 10-day injured list with a shoulder injury.

Due to injuries, Adolis García and Austin Hays were announced as starting outfielders in the American League for the All-Star Game.

Other additions to the All-Star Game are reliever Carlos Estévez, who takes the place of Emmanuel Clase, and Geraldo Perdomo, who takes the place of Dansby Swanson.

The Marlins optioned 20-year-old rookie pitcher Eury Pérez to the minor leagues. Despite his dazzling numbers in the majors, his being sent down is in order to limit his workload for a potential call-up later in the season.

The Phillies are shutting down their no. 1 prospect, Andrew Painter, after tests on his elbow yielded concern.

Isaiah Campbell of the Mariners became the first Portugese-born player in AL/NL history last night as he pitched in relief and struck out a batter for Seattle.

It was then that the Mets offense broke out, scoring four runs in the 10th inning to secure their sixth straight win.

It was the Mets who scored first on a weakly-hit but perfectly-placed Daniel Vogelbach infield single in the first inning. The Padres immediately responded, though, as Manny Machado hit an RBI double and later scored on a Luis Guillorme fielding error to give the Padres the lead in the bottom of the inning.

Verlander continued to find himself in trouble, even after surrendering the early lead. He gave up a Trent Grisham RBI double in the second inning to make it a 3-1 game before loading the bases in the third. With one out and Gary Sánchez at the plate, Verlander was able to get him to ground into a double play to avoid a disaster inning.

That double play seemed to reverse his fortunes as he allowed just one baserunner over the next three innings on his way to a quality start, a result that seemed impossible after how he started the game. Through six innings, Verlander allowed just two earned runs on 98 pitches and slightly lowered his season ERA from 3.66 to 3.60.

Darvish, who is usually dominant against the Mets, was unable to hold the 3-1 lead given to him by his offense. Francisco Lindor continued his recent hot stretch by hitting an opposite field homer that just sailed over the left field wall in the third inning and Vogelbach drove in his second run of the night with an RBI single in the fifth to tie the game.

A Ha-Seong Kim double with one out in the seventh appeared to give the Padres a late scoring threat to break the tie, but Tommy Pham played the ball hit by Kim conservatively in left field, prompting Kim to decide to stretch a triple before Pham uncorked a laser to throw him out. Kim’s curious decision to go for three bases wound up costing the Padres as Juan Soto doubled in the next at-bat which would have surely scored Kim, but instead Brooks Raley and Adam Ottavino were able to combine for a scoreless inning.

The game headed to extra innings tied as the Mets failed to score with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth, but they made up for it and more as Jeff McNeil ambushed Tom Cosgrove by doubling down the right field line on the first pitch of the 10th inning to put the Mets ahead. Francisco Álvarez subsequently drove in McNeil before Lindor drove in two, his second and third RBIs of the night, to crack the game wide open and make it 7-3.

A two-run home run by Machado with one out in the bottom of the inning made it a two-run game, but David Robertson fought off the last two batters of the inning to give the Mets a hard-fought and well-deserved win.

Álvarez continues to swing a scorching bat, as he went 4-for-5 against San Diego pitchers in this game. Although he didn’t hit any homers like he often does, Álvarez recorded the first four-hit game of his career and drove in the Mets’ second run of the 10th inning to provide some massive insurance en route to the team’s sixth win in a row.

The series with the Padres will continue on Saturday night with a 10:10 p.m. ET first pitch. The pitching matchup will see David Peterson (2-6, 6.61 ERA) face off against Blake Snell (5-7, 3.03 ERA), both of whom are pitching some of their best baseball of the season. The game will be broadcast on SNY.

The Mets defeated the Cardinals 6-1 on Friday night, giving them consecutive wins for the first time in June. The Mets entered the game with a 3-9 record during the month, struggling mightily and failing to gain any sort of momentum. Now with two straight wins and two more games against the reeling Cardinals on deck, the Mets have a chance to get back on track.

During the Mets victory, Tylor Megill pitched six excellent innings, giving up one earned run. Additionally, Daniel Vogelbach homered for the first time since May 7 as he looks to turn his season around.

Kodai Senga pitched his best game as a New York Met Tuesday night against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets shut out the Phillies 2-0 and did not allow a Philadelphia baserunner to progress past first base. For the Phillies, this is the first time they did not reach second base in a game since July 17, 2016, which was against the Mets. It was the Mets’ first win on a Tuesday this season.

The story of the game was Senga, who pitched seven near perfect innings while only allowing one hit and striking out nine. The defense backed him up, too, with Brandon Nimmo making a spectacular catch at the wall in center field to rob Nick Castellanos of an extra-base hit.

The Mets scored their two runs with a solo shot from Francisco Lindor and an RBI single from Eduardo Escobar. Lindor’s homer came in the bottom of the fourth and Escobar’s hit came later in the seventh. The two Mets knocks were all they needed as Senga and the bullpen closed the door on the visiting Phillies.

After be designated for assignment by the Mets earlier this week, Gary Sánchez has reported to the San Diego Padres at the major league level. The Padres sent down Brett Sullivan to Triple-A El Paso to put Sánchez on their roster. Sánchez went 1-for-4 in his Padres debut Tuesday.

The Mets have acquired infielder Tyler White from the Minnesota Twins and assigned him to Triple-A Syracuse, according to MMO‘s Michael Mayer. White was hitting .259, with a .386 OBP and .414 slugging in Triple-A this year for the Twins. He last played in the majors in 2019 and has 26 major league homers.
