There are not many positive takeaways from the Syracuse offense in game one of the team’s series against Rochester. Syracuse only logged one hit and no runs in a shortened, seven-inning game. Plummer tallied a single in this game, while Cortes and Palka drew walks. Luckily, the Syracuse offense did perform better in the second game of the doubleheader.

Peña got the start for the Mets and threw four innings with an unearned run due to a fielding error by left-fielder Cortes in the bottom of the first inning. Then, a scoreless inning by Adleman was followed by Claudio allowing a two-RBI double to Josh Palacios in the bottom of the sixth inning that put the game out of reach for Syracuse.

AAA: Game 2 – Syracuse Mets (8-14) 4, Rochester Red Wings (12-11) 2 BOX SCORE

Mets prospect Wyatt Young has been incredible since skipping Double-A to play for Syracuse. He has .918 OPS.

The Mets bounced back in game two, kicked off by a first-inning home run by Young. Blankenhorn also hit a home run in the fourth inning on a fly ball into to right-center field, scoring Carlos Rincon. Finally, Vientos doubled in the top of the sixth inning, scoring Carlos Cortes and giving Nogosek a cushion to make the save.

• Rob Zastryzny (0-1, 3.07 ERA): 3.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 K
• Antonio Santos (1-0, 4.32 ERA): 1.1 IP, H, BB
• Stephen Nogosek (1-0, 1.69 ERA): 2.0 IP, 2 H, BB, 2 K

Zastryzny got the start for the Mets, pitching 3 2/3 innings and allowing two earned runs on a home run and a RBI-double in the bottom of the fourth inning. Santos relieved Zastryzny and pitched a scoreless fourth inning, setting up Nogosek for the two-inning save. Nogosek has pitched well so far for Syracuse with a 1.69 ERA and 0.66 WHIP.

AA: Erie SeaWolves (12-8) 3, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (5-14) 1 BOX SCORE

• Zach Ashford – LF: 1-4, 2B
• Matt Winaker – 1B: 1-3, 2B, BB
• Jake Mangum – CF: 1-3, BB

The Rumble Ponies got four hits and drew five walks in Saturday’s game. They only scored one run on a force-out situation in the bottom of the second inning that scored Ronny Mauricio. Ashford and Winaker had doubles in the game, and Mangum also got on base twice. However, Binghamton needed a stronger offensive performance in this game to come out on top.

• Mitch Ragan (0-1, 8.76 ERA): 4.0 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 K
• Justin Lasko (0-1, 9.92 ERA): 3.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, BB, 2 K
• Willy Taveras (0-2, 3.18 ERA): 2.0 IP, K

Ragan got the start, throwing four strong innings for Binghamton. But the decision fell on Lasko, who allowed all three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Taveras threw two scoreless innings and gave the offense a chance to comeback. However, Binghamton was unable to capitalize on his perfect late-inning performance.

A+: Brooklyn Cyclones (11-9) 5, Bowling Green Hot Rods (13-7) 2 BOX SCORE

It was a loud day offensively for the Cyclones, who got eleven hits and five runs in Saturday’s game.

• Brandon Mcllwain – RF: 2-4, R
• Jose Mena – DH: 2-4, RBI, BB

Reyes hit a huge home run in the eighth inning that increased the Cyclones’ lead to 4-2 and put Brooklyn in full control of the game. That was Reyes’s first home run of the season, hopefully there are many more to come. He also hit two singles, gathering six total bases. Mcllwain and Mena also had multiple hits on Saturday, adding to Brooklyn’s profilic scoring attack.

• Garrison Bryant (1-0, 3.07 ERA): 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 3K
• Justin Courtney (2-0, 2.08 ERA): 2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 K
• Josh Hejka (1-0, 0.00 ERA): 2.0 IP, H, K

Bryant went five innings and did not receive a decision for the game. He allowed two earned runs on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning. Courtney did get the win for Brooklyn, throwing two scoreless innings and striking out three batters. Finally, Hejka got the two-inning save to give the Cyclones their eleventh win of the season.

A: St. Lucie Mets (13-7) 6, Daytona Tortugas (9-11) 3 BOX SCORE

• Raul Beracierta – 1B: 3-4, 2 R
• Omar De Los Santos – DH: 2-3, BB, 2B, 2 R
• Drake Osborn – C: 3-4, HR, 5 RBI

Eight of St. Lucie’s nine hits came from the six through eight hitters in the order. The offense kicked off with an Osborn three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning that scored Santos and Beracierta. Osborn also scored the same two players in the sixth inning with a single into left field. Shervyen Newton also hit a solo home run in Saturday’s game.

• Carson Seymour (2-0, 0.00 ERA): 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 K
• Nate Jones (1-0, 3.52 ERA): 1.1 IP, 2 H, K

Seymour and Jones both had good performances in this game. Seymour got the start and threw six scoreless innings while not walking any batters. After Cornielly and Grant Hartwig gave up three earned runs combined, Jones got the four-out save to give St. Lucie their 13th win of the season.

The Mets played a sim game at 11 a.m. on Monday at Clover Park, with the bulk of the pitchers being big leaguers. The position players on the lineup card were all minor leaguers, but guys like Pete Alonso and James McCann also took multiple at-bats.

Alonso and McCann had good days at the plate, though Francisco Álvarez stood out again. The 20-year-old catcher prospect had two doubles in the game, both to right field. His manager Buck Showalter talked about how impressed he was with the Mets’ top prospects, saying Álvarez has been “as advertised” in big league camp. Both doubles for Álvarez came off right-hander Jose Rodriguez.

Other notable prospects in the game include Mark Vientos, Ronny Mauricio, Khalil Lee, Nick Plummer, Jake Mangum, and Wilmer Reyes.

Another important note from the sim game was fellow Mets catcher McCann swinging the bat well as he tries to come back from a back issue. The veteran had three hits in the game, including two in one inning (sim game rules!). McCann didn’t run out his hits and did have a pinch runner take over for him on the hits.

Showalter said following the sim game action that McCann was good-to-go for Tuesday night’s game at the Marlins. It will be an important second season for the New York catcher, as MMO’s Thomas Hall wrote about the areas McCann needs to improve on to be successful in 2022.

Alonso did what Alonso does; he had a couple of rockets in the game and again had two hits in one inning against Trevor Williams. Both were doubles, one down the left field line and one down the right field line.

Most of the Mets’ top bullpen arms worked in the game after Williams and Rodriguez threw their innings. Seth Lugo, Trevor May, and Edwin Diaz looked good in their scoreless innings. Miguel Castro gave up an RBI single to minor leaguer Quinn Brodey. Right-hander Yennsy Diaz pitched an inning as well.

Lugo was particularly impressive, with two strikeouts in his inning of work. It was a scoreless inning with one strikeout in his only official outing this spring. Minor leaguers Junior Santos and Josh Walker finished off the game with an inning each. Walker got five outs in his inning because he got the first three outs so quickly.

The Mets will be back in Grapefruit League action on Tuesday night against the Marlins in Jupiter at 6:40 p.m., with Chris Bassitt getting the start.

The Salt River Rafters defeated the Scottsdale Scorpions 8-1 last night to improve their record to 5-5 (.500). Three Mets prospects had an at-bat in the game, and zero Mets prospects pitched in Saturday night’s contest. Below are the hitting statistics from Saturday night’s game. 

• Carlos Cortes – LF: 1-5, RBI, BB, 3K, R
• Wilmer Reyes – 2B: 0-5, BB, 3K, R
• Hayden Senger – C: 0-2, 2 BB, R

Wilmer Reyes batted first in the order and played second base. In five plate appearances, Reyes produced a walk and a run. However, after being walked in the second inning, Reyes stole his fourth base of the Arizona Fall League.

Later in the inning, Carlos Cortes, who got the start in left field, hit a single into left that scored Eric De La Rosa and moved Reyes to third. Next, Ryan Vilade singled on a line drive to second base to score Reyes and move Cortes to second, where he would be stranded. 

Hayden Senger, who caught seven innings, walked in the sixth inning and scored on another De La Rosa single. (It turned out to be a big night for the Tigers prospect as he got on base three times and knocked three runs in, including an eight-inning solo homer.)

Defensively, Reyes had no problems fielding second base, and neither did Cortes in an errorless game for the Salt River Rafters. Brett Baty, who cooled off in the second week of the AFL after hot first week, actually came in the game as a defensive substitute in the bottom of the eighth inning, but he didn’t get a chance to bat in the top of the ninth.

Overall, it was a somewhat quiet night for the Mets farm system. Nevertheless, Cortes and Reyes factored into the commanding win for the Salt River Rafters.

The Salt River Rafters offense put up an impressive 15 runs in their blowout victory against the Mesa Solar Sox on Saturday.

Mets prospects Brett Baty and Wilmer Reyes played key roles in the victory with each reaching base three times and scoring a combined three runs. The full box score can be found here.

• Wilmer Reyes 2B: 0-for-2, R, 3 BB, 2 K, SB, .000/.333/.000

Baty struck out swinging as part of a 1-2-3 first inning for the Rafters and walked on five pitches to lead off the third.

It was in the fourth inning where Baty and Reyes would make their presence felt the strongest. As the third batter up in the inning, Reyes walked on eight pitches after fouling off two potential third strikes. He immediately stole second base and moved to third on a single, brining Baty to the plate. On the third pitch of the at bat, Baty would rip a 73 MPH curveball into right center for a two-run triple, putting the Rafters ahead 7-1. Baty scored when the next batter, Spencer Torkelson, singled up the middle.

Baty and Reyes both came up a second time in that inning, with Reyes walking again and Baty striking out to finally put an end to the eighth-run inning. They would each get one more plate appearance before the game was called after the top of the eighth inning, but neither would record another hit.

No Mets pitching prospects appeared in Saturday’s game.

The Arizona Fall League has an off day on Sundays, so the Rafters will return to action against the Scottsdale Scorpions on Monday at 2:35 p.m. EST.
