Prior to his monster performance on Saturday, Acuña was slashing .282/.397/.542 (.939 OPS). He now has a  22 extra-base hits across 146 at-bats. Acuña has also walked (27) almost as much as he has struck out (33).

Of course, this is nothing new for Acuña when it comes to winter ball. Acuña hit .337 with a .914 OPS last season in Venezuela. His regular season once rejoining the New York Mets was then mighty unimpressive resulting in a couple demotions to Triple-A throughout the year.

Regardless, it is nice to see the 23-year-old infielder playing well. The Opening Day roster for the Mets is surely to go through some changes. However, if Acuña is able to carry over even a tad of what he has shown in Venezuela this winter, he could emerge as a valuable bench piece in 2026. Especially with the likes of Jeff McNeil gone and trade rumors swirling around Mark Vientos and Ronny Mauricio.

Saturday night, Acuña went 3-for-6 with a triple. Meanwhile, Mauricio went 1-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch and two RBIs.

Acuña is now slashing .285/.399/.555 (.954 OPS) with 18 extra-base hits and 32 RBIs. He has 25 walks to 32 strikeouts across 137 at-bats. His OPS ranks sixth in the league while his eight home runs rank eighth.

Meanwhile, for Mauricio, he is only slashing .186/.265/.349 (.614 OPS). He has a much smaller sample size than his infielding peer, with only 43 at-bats. He last played in the Venezuelan Winter League in 2023-24, when he injured his knee. He had a 1.178 OPS before going down.

As we have seen in the past, Winter League results can often hold little-to-no weight when it comes to regular season performance. For example, Acuña his .337 with a .914 OPS last Winter League season, but struggled mightily in the regular season with the Mets. Regardless, nice to see him playing well once again.

Through 23 games, and 76 at-bats, Acuña is slashing .276/.427/.553 (.980 OPS). Half of his 22 hits are of the extra-base variety, including four homers. Importantly, he has almost walked as much as he has struck out (17 walks, 21 strikeouts).

His .980 OPS ranks third in the league among 100 qualified. His 17 walks rank 15th. He has been one of the better offensive contributors in the whole league thus far.

Acuña also excelled in the league last season. During 2024-25, he hit .337 and had a .914 OPS across 101 at-bats.

It is worth pointing out, major leaguers and/or upper-level minor league players are known to kill the Venezuelan Winter League. Offensive statistics are also always on the higher side as evident by half of the league’s teams owning a team OPS of .793 or higher thus far this year.

This context is important to bring as around this time last year Acuña’s terrific Venezuelan Winter League performances sparked excitement for his outlook in 2025. However, last season for the Mets, Acuña struggled mightily at the plate (.567 OPS) and played in the minor leagues for some of the season as a result.

Despite that, it is great to see the 23-year-old showing strong signs at the plate. The defense is not, and never will be, the question for Acuña. It all comes down to if he will be able to emerge as at least serviceable at the plate. It is an important 2026 for the younger brother of Ronald.
