We’ve reached Part 2 of 4 of our breakdown of the other farm systems in the National League East. After heading down south to Georgia for Part No. 1, we’re going a bit farther south to Vice City for this installment.

LEAGUE RANKINGS

Baseball America: 18
MLB Pipeline: 15
FanGraphs: 20

All three outlets generally agree that the Marlins have a middle-of-the-road farm system. Not great, not awful. But for a team that lost 100 games in 2024 and traded away some of its best talent in the process, a middle-of-the-road farm system doesn’t inspire much confidence that things will be getting better for the Fish soon.

TOP PLAYERS TO KNOW

Miami’s farm system is headlined by Thomas White and Noble Meyer, a pair of 6-foot-5 2023 first-round prep arms, and Starlyn Caba, a teenage infielder acquired via trade just over one month ago.

White, ranked No. 41 by Pipeline and No. 33 by Baseball America in each publication’s recently released top 100 prospects lists for 2025, is Maimi’s consensus top prospect. The No. 35 pick in 2023 who signed for well above slot value is an exciting left-handed arm who features a power fastball that sits in the mid-90s and tops out in the 97-to-98 range, a slider that Pipeline has as a 65-grade pitch, and a changeup that both Pipeline and Baseball America have as a third above-average pitch. He spent last season split between Single-A and High-A and had success at both levels, putting up a 2.81 ERA with 120 strikeouts in 21 starts and 98 innings pitched. His command is still a work in progress, but his stuff is evident. He’s 20, and won’t turn 21 until late September, so he’s likely a few years out at the earliest, but White is firmly entrenched as one of the best pitching prospects in baseball.

Meyer, picked 25 spots before White and signed for $400,000 more than his southpaw counterpart in a below-slot deal, is another 20-year-old arm with plus stuff and questionable command. His fastball, curveball, slider and changeup all have average or above-average grades on Pipeline, with the slider being his highest-graded pitch. Like White, he spent his 2024 season split between Single-A and High-A, and while he handled the lower level well he struggled a bit once he was promoted. Across both levels, Meyer finished the year with a 4.01 ERA with 85 strikeouts in 19 games and 74 innings pitched. He’s another arm who’s not in play for 2025, but he could be part of a formidable young top-of-the-rotation with White and 21-year-old Eury Pérez in a few years.

The Marlins traded future Met Starling Marte to the Oakland Athletics for Jesús Luzardo in 2021, and then traded Luzardo to the Philadelphia Phillies this offseason for a package headlined by 19-year-old infielder Starlyn Caba. A 5-foot-9 switch hitter, Caba is a premier defender, with Pipeline, writing that “some evaluators believe that Caba is the top defender in the Minors and give him top-of-the-scale 80 grades for his shortstop defense.” Pipeline doesn’t quite give him the elusive 80 grade for his defense—they give him a still elite 70—but Baseball America and FanGraphs do.

As for his bat, he’s never going to be a slugger, but his bat-to-ball skills and plate discipline are believed to be above average. He made it as high as Single-A last season, and while he struggled at the plate once he got there, he’s still young. He’ll be 19 for the 2025 season and is likely very far from the bigs, but Caba could be the future at shortstop in Miami if his bat allows it.

Those three are Miami’s best prospects, but thanks to the sell-off they conducted in 2024 they’re far from the only notable ones.

Noble Meyer, via Tim DiPace, Inside the Diamonds

Digging Into the System

In May, the Marlins traded Luis Arráez to the San Diego Padres for OF Dillon Head, RHP Woo-Suk Go, OF Jakob Marsee and 1B/OF Nathan Martorella. Head, San Diego’s first-round pick in 2023, was the headliner package sent to Miami. He has elite speed, but injured his hip shortly after the trade and missed the rest of the year. If he can play a full season in 2025, it’ll be the first opportunity to see Head on the field for an extended period of time since he was drafted.

The full sell-off came about two months later at the trade deadline. A week before the deadline, the Marlins dealt A.J. Puk to the Arizona Diamondbacks for 1B /3B Deyvison De Los Santos and OF Andrew Pintar. De Los Santos is probably a top-10 organizational prospect and his 40 home runs (albeit with 144 strikeouts to just 34 walks) in 137 games between Double-A and Triple-A show why. Pintar could be interesting too after he tore up High-A as a 22-year-old in 2024 but struggled when moved up to Double-A.

Then came deadline day. The Marlins and Padres paired up again, this time with Miami sending Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing to San Diego for RHP Adam Mazur, 2B Jay Beshears, LHP Robby Snelling and 3B Graham Pauley. This was a monster return for Scott, who ended up being a Padre for all of two months before heading a few hours north to join the Dodgers in free agency.

Snelling was one of the breakout pitching prospects from the 2023 season when he had a sub-2 ERA in over 100 innings, but struggled in 2024 and had an ERA of 6.01 in Double-A with the Padres before the trade. He was much better after the trade, with his ERA after he got to the Marlins ending up at just under four. He even finished the year out with one start at Triple-A, going six strong innings with just one run allowed.

That wasn’t even all for Miami, also sending Jazz Chisholm Jr., who at that time was probably their face of the franchise, to the New York Yankees for C Agustín Ramírez, INFs Jared Serna and Abrahan Ramirez. The catcher Ramírez is the real prize in this deal, and he was one of the Yankees’ highest-regarded prospects at the time of the deal. His bat is legit, and while he might end up at first base instead of behind the dish, he has a chance to find himself right in the middle of Miami’s lineup. He’s hit at every level in the minor leagues and had 25 home runs and 26 doubles with a .845 OPS between Double-A and Triple-A in 2024. Serna is a good prospect in his own right, and Ramirez hit almost .350 in 49 games in rookie ball last season.

They also made a couple of small moves on deadline day, like dealing Huascar Brazobán to the Mets for INF Wilfredo Lara and dealing Bryan De La Cruz to the Pittsburgh Pirates for RHP Jun-Seok Shim and 3B Garret Forrester, but none of those three are very highly regarded prospects. They also sent Trevor Rogers to the Baltimore Orioles for OF Connor Norby and 3B Kyle Stowers, but both players have graduated from prospect status.

There are a handful of other prospects who were not acquired via trade last season who are notable, including 2024 first-round pick PJ Morlando. A high-school outfielder, Morlando has a good hit tool and solid power. 2021 first-round pick Joe Mack is a good catching prospect whose bat started to come around in 2024, and 2024 second-round pick shortstop Carter Johnson signed for a well above-average slot deal out of high school.

ANY 2025 IMPACTS?

We’ve already covered most of Miami’s farm system, but most of it is young and unlikely to make an impact in 2025. The two biggest prospects who are on the radar for this season are Snelling and Agustín Ramírez.

Snelling will likely begin the season in Triple-A, but with a shortage of talent on the MLB roster, the door will be open for him to pitch his way into the big league rotation. Sandy Alcantara will anchor the rotation, but even he is coming off Tommy John surgery so who knows how much they’ll be able to count on from him. Also, at the rate Miami’s been trading away MLB talent, Alcantara could very well not survive the trade deadline. After that, it’s Ryan Weathers, Edward Cabrera, Max Meyer and Valente Bellozo. Weathers, Cabrera and Meyer all have upside but also all have major question marks, and Bellozo is far from a lock to even win the final rotation spot out of camp, that could go to Mazur. There should be plenty of opportunities for pitchers to earn MLB opportunities, and Snelling will be at the top of the list.

Dax Fulton is another arm who could be in the mix, and he’s currently on the 40-man roster, unlike Snelling. A former high second-round pick, Fulton was a much higher-ranked prospect a few years year ago. However, missing most of 2023 and all of 2024 after undergoing his second Tommy John Surgery, he’s since tumbled down prospect lists.

As for Ramírez, there’s a chance he could make the team out of spring training. It’s probably not likely, but he played over 60 games at Triple-A last season. If he looks good in spring, there’s no reason not include him on the Opening Day roster other than service time manipulation. On FanGraphs, the projected starting catcher is Nick Fortes and the projected starting first baseman is Jonah Bride, so there’s plenty of opportunity there for Ramírez. That doesn’t even take into account the designated hitter where the current projected starter is the aforementioned De Los Santos. With 40 long balls and a near .300 batting average in 2024 he should absolutely be in the conversation for the Opening Day roster, and if he sticks he could be a sneaky pick to lead this depleted Marlins roster in home runs.

Other possible offensive contributors include Javier Sanoja, who made a big-league cameo in 2024. He is projected to make the MLB roster on the bench, and he could end up being a utility player. In just 15 games, Sanoja started games at second base, shortstop, left field and center field. Victor Mesa Jr. could also threaten for an MLB roster spot with the lack of depth the Marlins have in the outfield.

They’ve done it again. Just when you thought the Los Angeles Dodgers were done, they swoop in and sign yet another big-name player on the open market. Per Bob Nightengale, the Dodgers and right-handed reliever Kirby Yates have agreed to a deal pending physical. The details of the would-be contract are not yet known. Jon Heyman confirmed that it looks to be close to a done deal.

If the deal goes through, it will be the second addition to their bullpen in a matter of days. Los Angeles signed left-hander Tanner Scott to the bullpen on a 4-year, $72 million deal. With Yates in the fold now, he joins Scott, Anthony Banda, Michael Kopech, and Blake Treinen to a strong bullpen.

Yates will be 38 years old on Opening Day coming off a season in which he posted a 1.17 ERA in 61 1/3 innings for the Rangers.

There was little reported interest on the Mets end for Yates, even though they could use a right-handed reliever out of the bullpen. The team recently signed left-hander A.J. Minter. With Yates off the board, the Mets remaining options are thinning with players such as David Robertson, Kenley Jansen, Carlos Estevez, and Craig Kimbrel. With Yates assumingly going to the Dodgers, the defending World Series champions got better again.

They’ve struck again. Merely a few days after inking starting pitcher Roki Sasaki, a pitcher the New York Mets had interest in, the Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to a deal with left-handed reliever Tanner Scott, per Mark Feinsand. The Mets also had interest in Tanner Scott but decided to sign A.J. Minter to a deal.

The deal is reportedly for four-years, $72 million, and the Dodgers add him to a bullpen that includes Blake Treinen (who the Dodgers also re-signed this offseason) and Michael Kopech.

Scott pitched for the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres last year. He posted a 1.75 ERA in 72 innings to go along with 22 saves and 104 strikeouts. He has a 2.04 ERA over the last two seasons.

The best reliever on the market is now the latest to join the Dodgers. A team that has been very active in free agency as they pursue a second consecutive World Series title and a third in six years. They’ve signed Scott, Sasaki, Blake Snell, brought back Treinen, Hyeseong Kim, Michael Conforto and were able to re-sign Teaoscar Hernandez. With the signing of Scott, the Dodgers continue to show the Mets and the rest of MLB that they will be the team to beat this year.

In any given year, there are surprises—good and bad—and it seems a lot of the time the clubs that overachieve do it with the help of a strong bullpen while the teams that fall short of expectations suffer more than their fair share of late-inning meltdowns.

The Guardians, Brewers and Tigers—teams with 2024 preseason over/unders at 78.5, 77.5 and 80.5, respectively—each made the playoffs. Cleveland had the best bullpen ERA in the majors (2.57). Milwaukee was second (3.11) and Detroit was fifth (3.55).

Mandatory Credit: Jim Rassol-USA TODAY Sports

The defending champion Rangers had a preseason over/under of 89.5, its bullpen pitched to a 4.41 ERA (26th) and they won 78 games. The Mets bullpen ranked 17th with a 4.03 ERA.

With that, about six weeks before the start of spring training games, there remains a host of excellent relievers on the free agent market.

The best is lefty Tanner Scott, an All-Star for the Marlins last year (1.75 ERA, 84 Ks, 72 IP, 22 saves) who reportedly may receive a multi-year contract in the $20 million per range. The Red Sox, Braves and Dodgers have shown varying levels of interest. Will Sammon said the Mets have met with him, too.

David Stearns has never shown an inclination to spend big on relief pitchers and MMO’s James Villani wrote up a wonderful breakdown of how the Mets may look to build the 2025 bullpen. There are only four locks in the ‘pen as of now (Edwin Díaz, Reed Garrett, Dedniel Núñez and José Buttó) and they are all right-handed.

“The market is going to start moving here quick,” an agent told USA Today in an article posted Tuesday. “There are too many good relievers out there. The trouble is that right now these teams think back-end relievers are interchangeable.”

News & Notes on Relievers

Carlos Estévez, acquired by the Phillies from the Angels at the trade deadline, is also reportedly being pursued by the Red Sox, along with the Blue Jays and Cubs. Jon Heyman noted half a dozen teams are in on Estevez.

The Diamondbacks are interested in Kirby Yates (a bright spot in the Rangers’ bullpen with 33 saves and a 1.17 ERA).

Jeff Hoffman, a 2024 All-Star, is out there, but he may want to follow the path soon to be attempted by Clay Holmes and try to join a starting rotation. Reports indicate “many teams” interested in trying the conversion, but none specify which ones.

There is also Kenley Jansen (Blue Jays showing interest), Tommy Kahnle (Phillies), David Robertson and José Leclerc. From the Mets’ 2024 relief corps, there is Phil Maton (3.66 ERA, 60 Ks, 64 IP) and Ryne Stanek (4.88 ERA, 67 Ks, 55.1 IP).

It’s not too late to bolster the bullpen and it could lead to surprisingly good results.

The New York Mets continue to meet with top talent this offseason.

According to Will Sammon of the Athletic, the Mets have met with Tanner Scott and continue to explore the most expensive end of the relief market.

Scott would be another prestigious add for the Mets this offseason. They’ve already added Juan Soto to pair with Francisco Lindor in the lineup, and Scott would be a similar move to pair with All-Star closer Edwin Díaz.

Jul 19, 2024; Miami, Florida, USA; Miami Marlins relief pitcher Tanner Scott (66) delivers a pitch against the New York Mets during the ninth inning at loanDepot Park. Mandatory Credit: Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports

Scott, who turns 30 this upcoming July, registered his best season in his career in 2024. The left-hander registered 1.75 ERA between the Marlins and Paders, along with collecting 84 strikeouts in 72 innings.

The strikeouts come via Scott’s impressive, yet short arsenal. He features a 97-100 mile per hour fastball and hard 88 miles per hour slider, two pitches that are overwhelmingly effective and put away batters at over a 20 percent clip.

Due to this elite profile, he was acquired by the Padres to help their postseason run that was ended short by the Dodgers. Still, Scott was effective in his role, striking out five batters in four scoreless innings in the 2024 postseason.

Scott would be a tantalizing addition for the Mets. Their bullpen back end of Díaz and Dedniel Núñez was lock-down last season, but Nunez got injured before their magical postseason run and left manager Carlos Mendoza with few options. Reed Garrett stepped up in major spots, but was shaky from time to time with his command and finished ’24 with a 1.395 WHIP.

As Sammon pointed out in his article, signing Scott isn’t a sure thing. David Stearns has been known for adding elite talent in the bullpen, but not to long term deals. Scott is projected to sign a four-year, $64 million deal this winter, which is unprecedented waters for the Mets’ GM. The longest deal Stearn’s has given out was to Matt Albers in 2019.

Still, adding Scott would give the Mets another high-leverage arm to turn to in their pursuit of a National League Pennant. The only viable left-handers the Mets have at their disposal are Danny Young and Génesis Cabrera, the later who was signed to a minor league contract this offseason.

While the offseason has seen its lulls, no market has moved slower than the reliever pool. While the Mets solved one big puzzle to their pitching woes by re-signing Sean Manaea to a three-year, $75 million deal, they might still need to add one more starter and work on their bullpen. However, the reliever market isn’t necessarily stacked, although headlined by flame-thrower southpaw Tanner Scott.

The Mets’ 2024 bullpen was a carousel of rotating players, although mainstays who will return in 2025 are closer Edwin Díaz, Reed Garrett, Dedniel Núñez, José Buttó and Huascar Brazobán. Notable losses entering the 2025 campaign are Drew Smith, Adam Ottavino and Brooks Raley. The team has made a handful of depth signings so far, the most notable bullpen addition being Griffin Canning (a natural starter who could transition to a similar role like Buttó). Sean Reid-Foley is a candidate for the bullpen, too, if healthy.

With the names stated above, the Mets can add around three more arms to their bullpen for 2025. The pen has been a weak spot for the team for the past few years. Below are a few players the team can add to bolster their relief core and solidify the 2025 team.

Tanner Scott

Brooks Raley’s early season-ending injury hurt the Mets big time in 2024. They were without a reliable reliever, and while Danny Young did a fine job filling in, the team needs a reliable, high-end southpaw in the pen for 2025. Scott, without a doubt, is the best reliever available this offseason. Over his eight-year career, the lefty owns a career 3.56 ERA through 368 ⅔ innings pitched. He’s saved 55 games, struck out 486 batters and walked 202. Scott had a career year in 2024, splitting his time between Miami and San Diego. He earned his first All-Star nod, saved a career-high 22 games, and finished the year with a career-best 1.75 ERA.

While the 30-year-old struggles with walks (he ranked in the seventh percentile with a 12.2% walk percentage in 2024), he makes up for it nearly everywhere else. Scott finished in the 90th percentile in expected ERA (2.96) and expected batting average (.200), 91st percentile in fastball velocity (97 mph), and 100th percentile in average exit velocity (84.3 mph). A two-pitch threat, he throws a four-seamer and slider. His four-seamer had the seventh-best run value in baseball in 2024 (17), with an expected batting average of .184 and slugging of .252.

Left-handed hitters have a career .191/.314/.289/.603 line against Scott, while righties hit .235/.335/.344/.679 against him. MLB Trade Rumors predicts Scott will net a four-year, $56 million deal. Scott ranks as their 14th-best free agent this offseason.

The 37-year-old had his best year since 2019, posting a 1.17 ERA in 61 games. He allowed 23 hits, eight earned runs, three home runs, 28 walks and struck out 85 batters through 61 ⅔ innings pitched. Yates had the seventh-most saves in baseball (33), finished eighth in AL Cy Young voting and was named to his second All-Star team in his one season with Texas.

Yates ranked in the 100th percentile in expected ERA (1.86) and expected batting average (.145) while striking out 35.9% of batters faced (98th percentile). While he was one of the better relievers in baseball in 2024 (3.3 bWAR), he’s no stranger to the injury bug. He’s had two Tommy John surgeries and, like Scott, struggles with command. His 11.8% walk percentage placed him in the bottom eight percentile of pitchers. While he’s never been one for velocity, his four-seamer tops out at around 93.2 mph, opponents have never been able to quite differentiate the pitch from his split-finger, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

Lefties and righties have fared evenly against Yates. Lefties have a lifetime .196/.298/.362/.660 line against him, while righties mustered a .197/.276/.321/.597 line. While it isn’t likely Yates will replicate his 2024 season, he can still provide the Mets insurance in late innings. He can act as a setup man for Díaz, close for him when needed, and work in high-leverage spots.

Ryne Stanek

Of all the members of the 2024 bullpen to return, Ryne Stanek should be at the top of the list. The Mets acquired Stanek from the Mariners in late July for minor league prospect Rhylan Thomas. Stanek struggled during the regular season with the Mets, posting an ugly 6.06 ERA in 17 games. He allowed 13 hits, 11 runs, eight walks and struck out 23 in 16 ⅓ innings pitched. However, his shining moment in Queens came during the playoffs. He pitched to a Stanek-like 3.38 ERA in seven games, allowing five hits, three earned runs, three walks and eight punch outs. His 2.89 career postseason ERA speaks volumes compared to his regular season career 3.65 ERA. All said, Stanek was born for the playoffs.

At 33 years old, his 2024 fastball velocity put him in the 97th percentile (97.7 mph), and he landed in the 94th percentile in whiff percentage (33.2%). Stanek’s arsenal consists of a four-seamer, split-finger, slider and sinker. Stanek’s expected ERA (3.44) and expected BA (.205) suggest he ran into some bad luck in 2024, explaining his elevated ERA.

Most of the damage against Stanek came in his first couple of appearances with the Mets (he gave up three earned runs and two home runs in his debut inning in Queens). After that, he was a stellar presence for the Mets and could be a solid replacement for Drew Smith in the sixth or seventh inning in 2025.

Rundown

Scott is a 30-year-old, eight-year veteran who made the All-Star team for the first time this year as the lone Miami Marlins representative. He converted 18 of 20 save chances for Miami before the San Diego Padres traded for him at the deadline to bolster their bullpen for a playoff run.

He was excellent for the Padres, too, going 3-1 with a 2.73 ERA and four saves in the heat of a playoff race. In the postseason, he fanned seven in 4 1/3 scoreless innings combined against the Braves and Dodgers. He struck out Shohei Ohtani four times in the NLDS.

As Ohtani can attest, he was especially tough on lefties, holding them to a .132/.224/.191 slash line with no home runs in 68 at-bats. He throws a four-seam fastball that averaged 97 mph this year, per FanGraphs, and a slider. Hitters batted .130 against his fastball. Fun fact: He threw 1,163 pitches this year. One was a changeup.

Scott spent the first five seasons of his career with the Orioles, pitching to a 4.73 ERA in 156 innings. He had another mediocre season in 2022 in Miami, but something apparently clicked in 2023 when he struck out a career-high 104 in 78 innings and pitched to a 2.31 ERA. Excluding the shortened 2020 Covid season, his ERA was north of 4.00 every year prior.

Contract

Scott was on a one-year, $5.7 million contract this season. He has made $11.6 million in career earnings, per Spotrac, and will be looking to sign a multi-year deal. (The Athletic predicts four years, $60 million.) Players traded midseason are ineligible to receive qualifying offers (a process that ends with a signing team incurring draft pick penalties) so that is not an issue to consider with Scott.

Recommendation

Relief pitchers can be notoriously volatile from year to year (and even outing to outing) and I am generally a fan of finding bullpen arms on the cheap. Scott, however, is the best lefty reliever on the free agent market and I think the Mets should make an exception in this case even with the expensive price tag. Carlos Mendoza could use Scott to close and deploy Edwin Díaz earlier in games in certain circumstances. The righty-lefty, Díaz-Scott duo would give the manager invaluable match-up flexibility.

The team has a $7.75 million option to pick up the 31-year-old’s contract. Additionally, president of baseball operations David Stearns said that David Peterson, Tylor Megill and José Buttó may all find themselves in the ‘pen (or starting) come 2025. The situation is fluid.

Here are six relievers the Mets should take a look at.

Mandatory Credit: Jim Rassol-USA TODAY Sports

Carlos Estévez

Stats: 4-5, 2.45 ERA, 0.90 WHIP

The 31-year-old right-hander acquired by the Phillies from the Angels midseason had a career year, eclipsing his previous career-best ERA by more than a run. He struck out 50 and walked 12 in 55 innings while recording 26 saves between the two clubs. (He also would not have to face Francisco Lindor again, who tagged him for a grand slam in Game 4 of the NLDS.)

Tanner Scott

Stats: 9-6, 1.75 ERA, 1.12 WHIP

He will be one of the more coveted relievers this offseason and the Mets could use a quality left-hander to complement righty closer Díaz. Scott, 30, fanned 84 in 72 innings and tallied 22 saves combined for the Marlins and Padres, where he was traded at the deadline. He pitched 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief with seven strikeouts for San Diego in the playoffs. He won’t have a qualifying offer attached to him.

Clay Holmes

Stats: 3-5, 3.14 ERA, 1.30 WHIP

It was an uneven year for Holmes with the Yankees. He saved 30 games, but led the majors in blown saves with 13 and lost his closer job. Still, the 31-year-old struck out 68 in 63 innings and has fanned more than a batter per inning for four consecutive seasons. In 10 1/3 postseason innings so far, the right-hander has given up three earned runs.

Jeff Hoffman

Stats: 3-3, 2.17 ERA, 0.96 WHIP

He saved 10 games and struck out 89 in 66 1/3 innings for the Phillies while walking 16 and pitching to the lowest ERA of his nine-year career. The 31-year-old righty spent five years with the Rockies and two with the Reds before landing in Philadelphia, where he was a first-time All-Star this season.

David Robertson

Stats: 3-4, 3.00 ERA, 1.11 WHIP

The 39-year-old ex-Met had an excellent season with the Rangers, striking out 99 in 72 innings and saving a couple of games. The right-hander is a 16-year MLB veteran with 177 career saves who could have another good season in him and provide invaluable insight to the Mets’ younger pitchers. He is 6-0 with a 3.04 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 47 1/3 career playoff innings.

Tommy Kahnle

Stats: 0-2, 2.11 ERA, 1.14 WHIP

The 35-year-old right-hander who had Tommy John surgery in 2020 has put together back-to-back good seasons with the Yankees. This year, he fanned 46 in 42 2/3 innings and walked 19. He has tossed 8 2/3 scoreless postseason innings with seven strikeouts. He’s got a ferocious change up that would play well in the middle of the bullpen.

The pitching market has been the storyline of this year’s trade deadline, and the biggest reliever is now off the board. Per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the San Diego Padres have made another big splash trade by acquiring Tanner Scott from the Miami Marlins. Bryan Hoeing is also going to the Padres.

Per MLB’s Christina De Nicola, Miami is getting LHP Robby Snelling, RHP Adam Mazur, INF Graham Pauley, and INF Jay Beshears in the deal. The Marlins got three of the Padres’ top five prospects (per MLB Pipeline) in return for Scott in Snelling (2nd), Mazur (4th) and Pauley (5th), though all four prospects have seemed to regress a bit this year as they’ve leveled up.

Scott has notched 18 saves for the Marlins with a 1.18 ERA and 53 strikeouts.

As the Padres chase a wild-card spot with the Mets, they add a dynamic left-handed closer to an already stout bullpen. The Mets had some interest in Scott. However, the price for prospects looks to have been high for David Stearns to make a move for Scott.

The Mets have, however, acquired reliever Tyler Zuber and starter Paul Blackburn. As of publishing the deadline is an hour away.

With the trade deadline less than 24 hours away the New York Mets search for bullpen help continues. Earlier today, the team announced that left-handed reliever Jake Diekman has been designated for assignment, and they’ve recalled lefty Matt Gage from Triple-A Syracuse.

MLB insider from FanSided Robert Murray has reported that the Mets are among a list of teams expressing interest in the shut down lefty from Miami, Tanner Scott.

After numerous trades around the league for bullpen help, Scott is one of the best relievers available. Over 44 appearances he has posted a 1.18 ERA to go along with 18 saves and 53 strikeouts. According to Baseball Savant, his analytical profile is one of the best in the big leagues.

It is unknown for certain what Scott’s asking price will be as he is set to be a free agent at the conclusion of the season. Given the terrific season, and the returns seen in trades for relievers already completed, it’s likely that it may require high-end prospects as we alluded to this trade profile.
