<p>New York Mets catcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/plaweke01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Kevin Plawecki</a></strong> began his rehab assignment with the Las Vegas 51s last night with a bang.</p>
<p>Plawecki hit a two-run go-ahead homer in the fifth inning for Vegas in their 4-3 win over the Sacramento River Cats. He also struck out and flew out to left field.</p>
<p>The 27-year-old played five innings behind the plate in his first game action since April 11 against the Miami Marlins when he suffered a hairline fracture in his right hand.</p>
<p>51s&#8217; manager <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/defrato99.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Tony DeFrancesco</a></strong> told Betsy Helfand of the <a href="https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/51sbaseball/corey-oswalts-strong-start-leads-51s-to-win-over-sacramento/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Las Vegas Review Journa</strong></a>l after the game, &#8220;It was good to see, he hit a nice breaking ball up in the zone but you can tell that it’s going to take a few more than one game to get him ready to hit some major league pitching.&#8221;</p>
<p>Plawecki was hitting .188/.393/.200 in seven major league games this season for the Mets.</p>
<p>Right-handed reliever <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/robleha01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Hansel Robles</a></strong> also began his rehab assignment last night for Vegas. He allowed one run on three hits, walk and two strikeouts in his inning of work.</p>
<p>Robles suffered a hamstring strain on May 8 and has a 5.23 ERA in the majors this year.</p>

<p>Reynolds continues his hot hitting but he is still striking out a considerable amount. He has also continued to play left field prominently and recorded his second OF assist. After a slow start, Cecchini appears to have come around while playing solid defense at second base. Smith has managed to get on base in all but one game this season.</p>

<p>The pitching was very impressive for the 51s, especially given that it was in Las Vegas. As a staff, they combined to strike out 12. McGowan recorded the win last night while Sewald picked up the save. Rowen bounced back with a scoreless inning after struggling his last few times out.</p>

<p>Not much offense for Binghamton in last night’s loss. Luis Guillorme continues hitting and has recorded a hit in 8 of the first 9 games this season. He is hitting .424/.500/.515 so far this season. Top catching prospect, <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=nido--000tom&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Tomas Nido</a>, has struggled thus far for Binghamton. <p>A couple mornings ago I received a slew of text messages in rapid succession. They were all about the tweet released by FOX’s Ken Rosenthal and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/valdejo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jordany Valdespin</a></strong>’s 50-game suspension.</p>
<p>At first, I felt bad. My dark horse in 2013 added a new chapter entitled “PEDs” into the comedic novella he’s called a career. The one I called El Dramático for his propensity to pimp long home runs and throw tantrums when things didn’t follow the script had seemingly drawn his last straw.</p>
<p>Then I felt indifferent. Let’s face it. His stock was plummeting faster than <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/garzama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Matt Garza</a></strong>’s Twitter followers. His days in New York were numbered anyway.</p>
<p>On a whole, I felt good Major League Baseball finally cracked down on athletes besmirching the game of baseball. I’m sick of listening to PEDs discussions and it’s about time players were held accountable.</p>
<p>After I visited both sides of the emotional spectrum, all I could think about was the bizarre year Valdespin’s had in general. What started out as a prospect poised to showcase his talent this season, turned into a six-month odyssey that often fell outside any reasonable verisimilitude. I hope <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=rodrial01,rodrig011ale&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alex Rodriguez</a></strong> is sending thank you cards to Valdespin for carrying some of the load in New York.</p>
<p>In honor of our fallen compañero, let’s reminisce about the season El Hombre has had. In reality, we’ll probably never see him in a Mets uniform again.</p>
<p><strong>March 11, 2013 vs. Detroit Tigers</strong></p>
<p><a href="https://metsmerizedonline.com/2013/03/the-toughness-factor-why-the-mets-need-an-edge.html/jordany-valdespin-16" rel="attachment wp-att-110773"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-110773 aligncenter" alt="Jordany Valdespin" src="https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/valdespin1.jpg" width="300" height="168" /></a></p>
<p>During a Spring Training game, Valdespin launched a home run off <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/verlaju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Justin Verlander</a></strong> over the right-field wall. Then after a ground out, Valdespin stepped in against Verlander and took a 94-mph fastball right in the cojones. When media asked where the ball hit him, in throwback fashion, Valdespin answered, “My manhood.” No damage was done, which has now led many to jest that his grapes were actually raisins…</p>
<p><strong>April 24, 2013 vs. Los Angeles Dodgers</strong></p>
<p><a href="https://metsmerizedonline.com/2013/04/valdespin-wins-it-with-a-walk-off-grand-slam-in-dramatic-7-3-win.html/jordany-valdespin-22" rel="attachment wp-att-116221"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-116221 aligncenter" alt="jordany valdespin" src="https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/jordany-valdespin-1-300x228.png" width="300" height="228" /></a></p>
<p>In a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 10th inning, Valdespin faced <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/walljo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Josh Wall</a></strong> with the bases juiced. With one out, all Valdespin needed to do was hit a deep fly ball to win the game. On a 2-1 pitch, he did just that and ended up winning the game on a walk-off grand slam. As Valdespin does with most home runs, he strolled down the line holding his bat out as if the bat boy was going to rush out and grab it before he rounded first. Unfortunately, the story didn’t end there. <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/buckjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">John Buck</a></strong> smacked Valdespin in the face with a pie during a postgame interview so hard that the impact could have been heard in San Pedro de Macoris<strong> </strong>and for all the wrong reasons; many were furiously talking about the Latin enigma.</p>
<p><strong>May 7, 2013 vs. Pittsburgh Pirates</strong></p>
<p><a href="https://metsmerizedonline.com/2013/05/collins-raises-fear-of-retaliation-against-wright-because-of-valdespin-antics.html/valdespin-high-five" rel="attachment wp-att-118367"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-118367 aligncenter" alt="valdespin high five" src="https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/valdespin-high-five.png" width="237" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>Let’s set the scene: bottom of the ninth, one out and Valdespin steps into the box to pinch-hit against veteran reliever <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/contrjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jose Contreras</a></strong>. Contreras quickly falls behind Valdespin and on a 2-0 pitch, JV1 swings out of his shoes, flings his left leg back behind home plate, cranks one deep into the Pepsi Porch AND THE METS…cut the lead to five. We all remember Valdespin taking a second to admire his work and then staring defiantly into his own dugout.</p>
<p>The next day, manager <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/collite99.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Terry Collins</a></strong> sent Valdespin up to pinch-hit fully armored, much to Valdespin’s chagrin, knowing he’d get drilled. Low and behold, Pirates reliever <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/morribr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bryan Morris</a></strong> obliged Collins and plunked Valdespin. What ensued was a week-long media frenzy that still lingers with every mention of the Dominican utilityman.</p>
<p><strong>July 13, 2013</strong></p>
<p><a href="https://metsmerizedonline.com/2013/08/collins-rips-into-wheeler-after-6-2-loss-to-royals.html/collins_040913" rel="attachment wp-att-126462"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-126462 aligncenter" alt="collins_040913" src="https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/collins_040913.jpg" width="281" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>During a demotion to Triple-A, a volatile Valdespin allegedly called Collins a “c&#8212;sucker.” The incident happened after a 4-2 loss to the Pirates and left a teary-eyed Valdespin wondering, “How could this possibly be happening to the man right now?” Valdespin was reported to have tried inventing an injury to land on the DL, but instead was relegated to the Las Vegas 51s with only a strained left ego muscle. He left the Mets with a .188 batting average, four home runs, 16 RBIs and a chip on his shoulder.</p>
<p><strong>July 29, 2013 vs. Sacramento River Cats</strong></p>
<p><a href="https://metsmerizedonline.com/2013/08/backman-suspended-for-two-games-valdespin-draws-three-game-suspension.html/backman-3" rel="attachment wp-att-126280"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-126280 aligncenter" alt="backman" src="https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/backman.jpg" width="300" height="201" /></a></p>
<p>Valdespin got the start at second base for the Las Vegas 51s. He hit a three-run bomb in the third inning and subsequently got plunked later in the game. In retribution, 51s pitcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=rodrig005arm&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Armando Rodriguez</a></strong> hit River Cats second baseman <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/greengr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Grant Green</a></strong> and the benches cleared. The aftermath was the ejection of Rodriguez, Valdespin and both managers. ‘Spin was then sentenced to a three-game suspension. He hit .466/.537/.759 with three home runs and 24 RBIs in 16 games for Las Vegas.</p>
<p><strong>August 5, 2013</strong></p>

<p>— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) <a href="https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/statuses/364423822755102720">August 5, 2013</a></p></blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>That brings us to Monday.  At 9:33 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, Ken Rosenthal single-handedly caused my Twitter feed to erupt into orange-and-blue bedlam. He took Mets fans by surprise when he mentioned Valdespin would be one of two Mets players to serve a 50-game suspension. The other was the more obvious <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=puello001ces&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cesar Puello</a></strong>.</p>
<p>Valdespin has now been suspended by two different baseball leagues in the same week, a feat I never thought possible, and will try for the cycle in 2014.</p>
<p>I’m not sure how to feel about El Dramático anymore. To be honest, I, like many others, have sort of detached myself. He could feasibly play for the Mets in the last few games of the season. By then we’ll know if the Mets have a shot. If he <i>does</i> play, fans will either cascade him with heaps of heckling or pray that he has one more dramatic at-bat to save the season. My money is on the former.</p>

<p><strong>Updated on May 7</strong></p>
<p>Zack Wheeler turned in his second straight strong outing with Triple-A Las Vegas, limiting Sacramento to three hits and a walk in six scoreless innings Sunday. Sandy Alderson has suggested Wheeler needs to turn in a string of positive starts before promotion consideration is made.</p>
<p>That said, Adam Rubin of <a href="https://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>ESPN New York</strong></a> speculates that Wheeler could make his MLB debut when the team will need an extra starter during a June 17-20 series at Turner Field. Because of Saturday&#8217;s postponement, the addition of the make-up date on June 18 will now that a five-game series.</p>
<p>&#8220;That likely would come after the Super 2 deadline, meaning Wheeler would miss an extra year of arbitration eligibility,&#8221; writes Rubin. &#8220;It probably would be a sweet moment for him, too, since he grew up in Dallas, Ga., outside Atlanta. Of course, this is all speculation.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Original Post May 6, 2013</strong></p>
<p>Top Mets pitching prospect <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=wheele001zac&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Zack Wheeler</a></strong> followed up a solid start last week with an even better one today as the Las Vegas 51s beat the Sacramento River Cats 6-2.</p>
<p>Wheeler tossed six scoreless innings and allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out four. What stood out was that he tossed 91 pitches (55 strikes, 36 balls) and left the game looking he had plenty left in the tank.</p>
<p>He picks up his second win of the season and while he had command issues through the first two innings (15 strikes, 11 balls, walk), he got into a groove and dominated the rest of the way.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s two good starts in a row for Wheeler who made an adjustment to his delivery before his last start and so far things have turned around since a rocky start to the season.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff">Thoughts From Satish R. </span></h3>
<p>Wow! This is exactly what I wanted to see from Zack. The minor leagues are a place where you work on the kinks in your game &#8211; including things like mechanics. If the adjustment Wheeler made to his rotation before last week&#8217;s start was the big difference between a great performance and a bad one, then superb catch by the staff. He probably had another inning in him if they wanted to push it, but I&#8217;m alright with Backman pulling him so the young Wheeler stays in high confidence mode.</p>
<p>I was a little worried with how he started this game and thought we were headed towards a shaky performance, but Wheeler turned it around quickly and stood his ground. He was the aggressor on the mound and looked like a pitcher who finally trusted his pitches &#8211; at least his dominant fastball. The Wheeler watch is definitely on now&#8230; As everyone has been saying all season long, if Zack Wheeler strings together a couple of good starts in a row, it will be really interesting to see what the Mets brass does with him.</p>
<p>I still want to see more from the young man, but I have been very impressed with these last two starts.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #0000ff">Thoughts From Mitch Petanick</span></h3>
<p>I will probably be in the minority when saying I wasn&#8217;t blown away by Wheeler&#8217;s start. On paper, the start was fantastic — no runs allowed while giving up three hits and one walk. It&#8217;s exactly what you want to hear about your prized prospect. However, I saw some things in the game that caused me to raise an eyebrow.</p>
<p>Let me preface what I am about to say with letting you know I only watched the first four innings of the game today. With that being said, I felt that Wheeler was not really throwing his off speed pitches for strikes, especially his breaking balls. The batters seemed to figure out that he was not throwing them for strikes, so they didn&#8217;t chase them out of the zone very often, and were sitting on the fastball (this is probably why Wheeler only had four strikeouts instead his usual seven or eight). That usually spells trouble for a pitcher, unless you are throwing 97 mph. Wheeler&#8217;s fastball was good enough to get the hitters out today, but that won&#8217;t always be the case.</p>
<p>The 97 mph fastball will not be enough to get hitters out at the major league level alone. He will have to throw the off speed pitches for strikes consistently. I didn&#8217;t see that enough today, although it was definitely another step in the right direction for Wheeler.</p>

He now has had a multi-hit game ten times this season.</li>
<li><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=darnau001tra&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Travis d&#8217;Arnaud</strong></a> was pulled from last night&#8217;s game after being struck with a ball on the ankle while he was behind the plate. The ankle is probably one of the most painful spots to get hit with a ball, as the ankle bone is pretty much completely exposed. This sounded precautionary as there were no reports of d&#8217;Arnaud being sent for X-rays.</li>
<li>Newly promoted <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=degrom001jac&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jacob deGrom</a></strong> got the nod for Binghamton last night. Like I said yesterday, many had him penciled into the Binghamton rotation at the start of 2013, so it was really only a matter of time before he got the call. He could not have pitched a better game. So good, in fact, that Binghamton head coach, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lopezpe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pedro Lopez</a></strong>, announced after the game that deGrom would be joining the B-Mets staff, and they would likely move to a six-man rotation once <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=mazzon001cor&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cory Mazzoni</a></strong> is back from his injury.</li>
<li>Sandy Alderson commented on what would determine when top prospect <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=wheele001zac&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Zack Wheeler</a></strong> is called up to Flushing. He stated while the Super Two status is taken into consideration, Wheeler&#8217;s performance will ultimately determine when it&#8217;s his time. With the Mets backend of the rotation struggling the way it is, it won&#8217;t take many more solid starts before they go with Wheeler. I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised if <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mchugco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Collin McHugh</a></strong> and Wheeler are both called up within the next month if the Mets rotation continues to falter. I would expect <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=monter000raf&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rafael Montero</a></strong> to get called up to Las Vegas if, and when, Wheeler, McHugh, or both guys join the Mets during the next few weeks.</li>
<li>Andy Martino, of the Daily News, commented on the Wheeler situation <a href="https://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/baseballinsider/2013/04/ny-mets-right-to-stick-with-plan-on-zack-wheeler-the-anti-ozzie-in-miami-yan">in his post </a>this morning:
<p dir="ltr"><em>Wheeler is 0-1 for Triple-A Las Vegas this season, with a 3.86 ERA. In 14 innings, he has allowed 17 hits and six walks while striking out 17.  You can throw out his first two starts, mediocre because of a since-popped blister on his pitching hand &#8212; but while Wheeler’s third game was much better, he still allowed three earned runs in 5.1 innings.</em></p>
<p><em>The stuff was excellent, say people who were there, but his line didn’t scream “promote me now!” Plus, that was Wheeler’s first healthy game of the season. Little soon to be buzzing about the big leagues, don’t ya think?</em></p>
<p>I agree that his first two starts may have been less than stellar due to the blister. However, I totally disagree with the fact that his stat line has to scream &#8220;promote me now!&#8221; If this was the determining factor, where would Matt Harvey be right now? Don&#8217;t get me wrong, stats do play a part when determining if a player is ready, but it goes way deeper than that. It&#8217;s not too soon to be buzzing about the big leagues. Two or three more solid starts, and Wheeler will join the Mets. There isn&#8217;t much more developing that is necessary. I would estimate that if Wheeler were called up right now he would be better than 80% of major league pitchers based on his stuff alone. With some added fine tuning at the major league level, he will be in the top 10% of pitchers in the league.</li>
<li><strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=flores003wil&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wilmer Flores</a></strong> is quietly having a solid year with Las Vegas. He is batting .288 with five doubles and only struck out three times in fourteen games. He has also played the majority of games at second base this season and has done a solid job defensively.</li>
<li>After a quick chat with B-Mets beat writer Lynn Worthy, I learned that the reason DeGrom did not start season in Double-A as I initially projected, was because he showed up to spring training with a fractured finger that took time to fully heal. As Lynn told me, &#8220;Jake broke it while working for a friend&#8217;s cattle company. Apparently he had a bad day when he got kicked in the hand by a calf. True story. (Joe D.)<a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23TrueStory&amp;src=hash"><b><br />

<li>I am looking forward to seeing <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/familje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jeurys Familia</a></strong> work out of the Mets bullpen, after a small taste of the majors last year, I think he now knows what he&#8217;s up against and I expect great results. The fact he now knows that his ticket to the big time will depend on embracing his role as a reliever, and his solid work out of the bullpen for Las Vegas will prove instrumental toward achieving success. (Joe D.)</li>
<li>While players like <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/satinjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Josh Satin</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=plawec000kev&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kevin Plawecki</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=nimmo-000bra&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brandon Nimmo</a></strong> are getting most of the ink these days, the one player who leads the Mets Minors in RBI is T..J. Rivera who has driven in 13 for St. Lucie. <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=leathe002joh&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jack Leathersich</a></strong> had this to say about Rivera in an interview I did with him. &#8220;He’s the real deal. I’ve never been around a kid who prepares as well as he does. He just really loves the game and it seems like everytime I see him he’s out on the field working on something. Rivera plays hard and is completely balls to the wall – he’ll do anything to make sure we win.&#8221; (Joe D.)</li>

<p>Mike Newman of <a href="https://rotoscouting.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>ROTOscouting.com</strong></a> headed to Historic Grayson Stadium, home of the Savannah Sand Gnats, and provides some fresh scouting on hot-hitting Brandon Nimmo including this video footage:</p>
<p>[iframe]&lt;iframe width=&#8221;420&#8243; height=&#8221;245&#8243; src=&#8221;https://www.youtube.com/embed/-eYPLiB0PhI?list=UUQ-T_hHemS7VH8KnczDbJag&#8221; frameborder=&#8221;0&#8243; allowfullscreen&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;[/iframe]</p>
<p>He says that as Nimmo continues to learn how to identify pitches to drive, his power should uptick as well. Early in the season, his strikeout and walk percentages have both decreased. While one might dismiss this as small sample size, Nimmo’s controlled aggression is a sign of growth from a scouting standpoint.</p>
<p>If this holds true, then Nimmo is bound to put baseballs in play at a higher rate than last season, resulting in the accumulation of extra base hits&#8230;By the end of the 2013 season, don’t be surprised if Nimmo has overtaken <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=flores003wil&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wilmer Flores</a></strong> as the best position prospect in the organization, assuming Travis D’Arnaud loses eligibility later in the season.</p>

<li><strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=nimmo-000bra&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brandon Nimmo</a> </strong>continues to flatten baseballs. He had another three hits in Tuesday night&#8217;s game, and has brought his average up to a ridiculous .447. Many people were watching to see how Nimmo would respond in 2013, and he seems to be silencing the critics. There was going to be an adjustment period for Nimmo at the professional level. High school players might see one good pitcher a week at that level, then they come to professional baseball and are facing pitchers everyday that may have been better than any pitcher they ever faced in high school. It&#8217;s safe to say Nimmo has made the necessary adjustment to professional baseball, and continues making the doubters look foolish.</li>
<li>It&#8217;s time to promote <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=plawec000kev&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kevin Plawecki</a></strong>. Low-A pitching is just not challenging enough for him. He&#8217;s a polished college hitter and should have started the season at St. Lucie. Everyday he goes and smacks another double or home run, I scratch my head and wonder why he is playing for Savannah.</li>
<li>Another solid outing for <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mchugco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Collin McHugh</a></strong> last night. The righty now has started three games and has a ridiculous 0.50 ERA. He also has fifteen strikeouts in fifteen innings this year to only four walks. What are the Mets waiting for to give this guy a shot at the back end of the rotation?</li>
<li>Newly promoted <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=degrom001jac&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jacob deGrom</a></strong> gets the nod for Binghamton tonight. Many had him penciled into the Binghamton rotation at the start of 2013, so it was really only a matter of time before he got the call. While at St. Lucie, he pitched twelve innings, striking out thirteen batters while only walking two.</li>
<li>Many already know that Joe D. and I differ with our thoughts on <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=wheele001zac&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Zack Wheeler</a></strong>. I am for promoting him as soon as the Mets gain the extra year of control for a number of reasons. One, I think he&#8217;s bored pitching at the minor league level. When you have a talent like Wheeler, you have to keep challenging them in order to get the most out of them. Once promoted, we will see a different Zack Wheeler. Two, there are factors beyond Wheeler&#8217;s &#8220;control&#8221; that lead to walks. If pitchers threw the ball in the strike zone consistently, they would get rocked, and never make it past Single-A. It&#8217;s the pitcher&#8217;s job to either get hitters to swing at bad pitches, or throw pitches that look bad, but then break over the strike zone. So they want them to swing at pitches out of the zone, and not swing at the ones in the zone. Makes sense right? Well, I believe that Wheeler&#8217;s pitches are so dominant, that the batter&#8217;s aren&#8217;t given the opportunity to chase them. Then when the umpire calls ball four, the hitter is probably breathing a sigh of relief as he walks down to first base. Any hitter that has gone up against a dominant pitcher knows exactly what I&#8217;m talking about.</li>

<h3><span style="color: #0000ff">Sacramento 8, Las Vegas 4 </span></h3>
<p>The Las Vegas 51s(3-1) were handed their first loss of the season Sunday as they were unable to hold Sacramento in check in the seventh, falling in an 8-4 decision to the River Cats.</p>
<div>
<p><strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=torreca01,torres008car&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Carlos Torres</a></strong> got the nod for the 51s and put out a solid effort, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out a trio, taking a no-decision. The name of the game for Torres was getting in and out of jams, as he allowed at least two baserunners in three of the six frames he pitched in, allowing a run to cross in the third and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=owen--001dyl&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dylan Owen</a></strong> allowed an inherited runner to score in the sixth.</p>
<div>
<p>In the third, the RiverCats drew first blood on a <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=green-001gra&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Grant Green</a></strong> RBI double that scored <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/weeksje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jemile Weeks</a></strong> from first. In the sixth, Torres left with two out and a runner on for Owen, who gave up a double to the first batter he faced to give Sacramento a 2-0 lead.</p>
</div>
<div>
<p>The 51s rallied in the seventh to tie the game at that point with two runs, and they also dropped a two-spot in the eighth. In the seventh, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=brownan01,brownan02,brown-005and&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andrew Brown</a></strong> came home on a fly ball off the bat of <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lutzza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Zach Lutz</a></strong>, then <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/satinjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Josh Satin</a></strong> scored on a <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bixlebr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brian Bixler</a></strong> RBI single. The eighth was the same story, except <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=havens001ree&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reese Havens</a></strong> had the sac fly and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=flores003wil&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wilmer Flores</a></strong> had an RBI single to score <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/q/quintom01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Omar Quintanilla</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=lagare001jua&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Juan Lagares</a></strong> respectively.</p>
</div>
<div>
<p>However, despite the late offensive outburst by Las Vegas, the turning point of this game was in the bottom of the seventh when Dylan Owen came on for a second inning of work. After allowing three of the first four batters to reach base and load the bases, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=choice001mic&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michael Choice</a></strong> dug in and served up a grand slam, putting Sacramento up 6-2. Owen would stay in to face <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=taylomi01,taylor011mic&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michael Taylor</a></strong>, who also took him deep, which led to him taking the loss after allowing five runs in just 2/3 of an inning of work. <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=rodrig005arm&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Armando Rodriguez</a></strong> relieved Owen and retired the side, but not before allowing the third jack of the inning to <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/vogtst01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stephen Vogt</a></strong> to make it an 8-2 ballgame.</p>
</div>
<div>
<p>The 51s start a series with the Fresno Grizzlies tonight at 10:05 ET with <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=gorski001dar&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Darin Gorski</a></strong> taking the mound for Las Vegas.</p>

<h3><span style="color: #0000ff">Las Vegas 51s 6, Sacramento River Cats 1</span></h3>
<p>The 51s improved to 3-0 this season with a win last night against the River Cats behind good pitching from <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mchugco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Collin McHugh</a></strong> and a three-run sixth inning.</p>
<p>Before Collin McHugh allowed his first and only run on the evening, the 51s had already given him four runs. A sacrifice fly by D&#8217;Arnaud in the third drove in <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bixlebr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brian Bixler</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=campbe003eri,campbe001eri&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eric Campbell</a></strong> picked up a sac fly of his own in the sixth. Of course, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/satinjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Josh Satin</a></strong> refused to be left out of the action, as he drilled his two-run home run in the sixth as well. Jamie Hoffman and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=brownan01,brownan02,brown-005and&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andrew Brown</a></strong> added RBI singles in the eighth and ninth to wrap up the scoring for Vegas.</p>
<p>McHugh was solid overall, as he pitched into the sixth and allowed two of his four hits against in that inning &#8211; along with a HBP. Luckily for him, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/carsoro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Robert Carson</a></strong> came in and stranded two runners to get out of the inning, and he combined with <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=peavey001gre&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Greg Peavey</a></strong> to pitch a scoreless rest of the game.</p>
<p>It was a simple case of taking care of business down in Vegas for the 51s. Both the Binghamton Mets and the Las Vegas 51s are undefeated&#8230;how about that?</p>
<p><strong>Key Stats</strong></p>

<li><b>Brian Bixler &#8211;</b> 2 for 4, 2B, 3B, 2 R, BB, SB</li>

</ul>
<p><strong>Tomorrow&#8217;s Game</strong></p>
<p>The 51s send <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=torreca01,torres008car&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-metsmerizedonline.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Carlos Torres</a></strong> to the mound at 4:05 ET tomorrow to finish up their series with the River Cats.</p>
