Sean Manaea looked fantastic in his rehab start in Triple-A on Friday. The lefty tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on two hits, no walks and seven strikeouts. He will likely undergo a few more rehab starts before returning to the major league team, but he will certainly be a massive reinforcement when that time comes.

Latest Mets News

The Mets (45-31) lost their seventh straight game, falling 10-2 to the Phillies (46-30) on Friday. Zack Wheeler silenced the Mets before they hit back-to-back home runs off Taijuan Walker in the sixth inning, but Blade Tidwell and the bullpen allowed 10 runs to quickly turn the game into a blowout.

Each game in the Mets’ series in Philadelphia is being broadcast nationally. Friday night’s game aired on Apple TV, Saturday’s game will be on FOX, and Sunday night’s game will be featured on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.

Speaking to reporters before Friday’s game, Carlos Mendoza said a Monday return is possible for Mark Vientos.

According to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Mets are reportedly seeking center field and bullpen help at this year’s trade deadline. The Mets are expected to trade from their surplus of pitching prospects.

The Mets announced a few roster moves prior to Friday’s game. The team recalled Tidwell, who started Friday’s game, and sent Justin Hagenman back to Syracuse. Additionally, the Mets transferred Manaea’s rehab assignment to Syracuse, where he made his start on Friday.

The Dodgers made a statement following the recent presence of ICE agents at their stadium, announcing they are committing $1 million towards families of immigrants impacted by recent events in the region.

Per Sam Blum of The Athletic, hedge fund founder Trip Miller has formed a group and has made an all-cash offer to the Rays in an attempt to purchase the team. This comes after the Rays were reported to be in deep talks with real estate developer Patrick Zapulski for ownership of the team.

Pirates reliever and former Met Dennis Santana was suspended for four games on Friday, following an incident where he displayed “aggressive conduct” towards a Tigers fan on Thursday.

In other suspension news, Padres reliever Robert Suarez was suspended three games while Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and Padres manager Mike Shildt were each suspended a game and fined for the recent animosity and throwing at batters between the two rivals.

Blum also reported that Angels manager Ron Washington will not manage the team for the time being due to a health concern. Ray Montgomery, the Angels’ bench coach, will manage the team moving forward.

The Mariners reinstated outfielder Luke Raley from the 10-day injured list and designated Rowdy Tellez for assignment. Raley had just a .669 OPS prior to his injury, meanwhile Tellez had not been much better with a .682 OPS.

Frankie Montas had a rough go of it in his rehab start for the Syracuse Mets on Friday, giving up eight runs in just 1 2/3 innings. He allowed seven hits, one walk, and recorded just one strikeout. Montas has now made a total of four rehab starts, including two with Syracuse. In these four starts, Montas has allowed 12 runs in 12 innings. Looking to work his way to the major league team to make his Mets debut, Montas has yet to have a good outing.

The Mets (45-25) lost to the Rays (37-32) on Friday, 7-5. It was a tough one for the Mets who built a 5-1 lead, but they let it slip away when Paul Blackburn and Max Kranick combined to allow six runs in the sixth inning. The loss snaps the Mets’ streak of six consecutive wins.

In a press conference prior to Friday’s game, David Stearns provided an update on the rehabs of Jesse Winker and Jose Siri. According to Stearns, Winker is still “multiple weeks” away from a rehab assignment, while Siri suffered a setback and will be re-imaged in a few weeks.

Jacob Reimer starred for a hot Brooklyn team, notching six extra-base hits and walking three times, raising his OPS to 1.065. The stellar week earned him a spot on MLB Pipeline’s Team of the Week.

Let’s take a look at the rest of the minor-league system, which saw multiple key MLB pieces rehabbing.

Triple-A

The Syracuse Mets (10-10) had a great week at the ballpark, winning their first series of the season. They took five of six games from the Buffalo Bisons, including two shutouts. Syracuse pitchers allowed just 13 runs in the six-game set, while the offense scored 29 runs.

Two of the Mets’ recent veteran additions to the Triple-A squad were two of the standout bats from the most recent series.

• Jon Singleton played in just four games but had excellent production, recording three home runs and six RBIs in just 14 at-bats. The former Astro now leads the squad with four long balls.
• Niko Goodrum was the other veteran who shined, as he went 5-for-12 with three doubles, five walks, and a stolen base. His OPS in the five games he played in was 1.246.

Gilberto Celestino continued his hot start to the season by adding two home runs, while Jakson Reetz heated up with two home runs of his own. Both players are tied for second on the team behind Singleton with three home runs.

On the mound, Blade Tidwell had a fantastic week after getting off to a rough start to the season. The top prospect made two starts, allowing two runs in five innings in the first one and allowing no runs in 4 1/3 innings in the second one. He also struck out 13 batters across his two appearances, lowering his ERA through five starts to 4.43.

Brandon Sproat had his best outing of the year, tossing six scoreless innings. Surprisingly, he struck out just one batter. But he has now allowed just two earned runs in his last three starts (14 1/3 innings) and has a season ERA of 3.31.

Brandon Waddell was also fantastic again, allowing one run in six innings with five strikeouts. Through four starts, the lefty has a 1.40 ERA.

Double-A

After dropping the first two games of their series against the Reading Fightin Phils, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (7-6) stormed back to win four straight games to clinch the series. Binghamton pitchers locked in after they allowed 19 runs in the first two games, giving up just 10 over the next four.

• Jeff McNeil played in two games for Binghamton, and he made his presence felt. He went 6-for-9 with two home runs and a double, including his most recent game in which he was 4-for-4. McNeil, who has been experimenting with the torpedo bat, should be back on the major league roster before too long.
• Francisco Alvarez also continued his rehab assignment, with his return to the major league roster coming soon as well. Alvarez didn’t have as much success as McNeil but was still productive, recording six hits, including a homer, in five games. He also caught multiple full games.
• Both players will continue rehab this week with Syracuse.

Ryan Clifford had a slow start to the season but began heating up in this series, leading the team with seven hits, including a homer and two doubles. The lefty slugger also led the team with four runs driven in, and he now owns a season OPS of .737.

Jett Williams also had a productive week, recording a double, a triple, a homer, and a stolen base in four games. His OPS for the season is .831.

The highlight of the week on the mound in Binghamton was Nolan McLean, who continues to look like a rising star. McLean tossed six shutout innings with eight strikeouts in his latest effort, moving his ERA through three starts to 0.60.

Jack Wenninger also continued his strong season, allowing just one run in five innings with six strikeouts. He has a 1.20 ERA through three starts.

High-A

The Brooklyn Cyclones (10-5) took four of six games from the Aberdeen IronBirds, with their two losses coming by a combined total of four runs. Brooklyn had a chance to rattle off four straight wins to finish off the series and remain tied atop the South Atlantic League North division, but they were unable to secure a victory in the series finale.

Two of the hottest batters in the Mets’ system continued their early-season tears this week. Chris Suero didn’t hit much, going just 3-for-17, but two of his hits were home runs and the other one was a double. He also walked four times and stole four bases. His OPS for the year dropped but still remains above 1.000 at 1.128.

Reimer is the other batter, who we mentioned in the intro, tearing the cover off the ball. He went 8-for-19 with two doubles, two triples, and two home runs. He walked three times and raised his OPS to 1.065.

Zach Thornton was brilliant once again, dominating to the tune of six shutout innings. He allowed just one hit and no other baserunners while striking out eight. The Mets’ 2023 fifth-round pick has yet to allow a run in three starts (16 innings) and has allowed just nine baserunners all year.

Noah Hall, another 2023 draft pick, also impressed by allowing one run in five innings with seven strikeouts. Hall struggled in four starts in Brooklyn a year ago but has just a 1.23 ERA through three starts in Brooklyn this year.

Low-A

The St. Lucie Mets (8-7) won four of their six games against the Tampa Tarpons. The series between the two teams featured a ton of offense, including the series opener in which the Mets scored 17 runs. In all six games, the Mets scored 44 runs while the Tarpons scored 32.

Marco Vargas and A.J. Ewing were at the forefront of the offensive attack, with Vargas going 7-for-16 with a home run, four walks, and eight runs, while Ewing went 8-for-20 with a double, a triple, five RBIs, and five stolen bases. Vargas (.438) and Ewing (.429) are ranked first and second in the Florida State League in average, and both maintain an OPS eclipsing 1.150.

Colin Houck and Trace Willhoite both hit two home runs during the series, despite not hitting much otherwise. Willhoite led the team with seven RBIs in the series while Houck walked five times. Willhoite has been great, with an .861 OPS while Houck has struggled for the most part, owning a .674 OPS.

Nate Dohm and Will Watson, two of the Mets’ 2024 draft picks, each pitched five innings while allowing just a run. Dohm allowed just one hit and struck out six in his effort while Watson allowed five hits and struck out four. Both have been great so far, but Watson has especially impressed with a 0.71 ERA in three appearances.

Out of the bullpen, Chandler Marsh had a phenomenal series. In two appearances, he tossed four perfect innings and struck out seven. Marsh was signed in the middle of last season as an undrafted free agent and has looked great early in his pro career.

Players of the Week

Offense – Marco Vargas, 2B/SS St. Lucie

For the second week in a row, the minor league offensive player of the week comes from St. Lucie. Vargas had a brutal 2024 in which he was injured for most of the year and when he did play, he was unproductive. This year, he’s showing why the Mets thought so highly of him to bring him in as the centerpiece of the David Robertson trade in 2023.

Vargas is leading the Florida State League in average and on-base percentage and is second in the league in OPS. He also has more walks than strikeouts, which is a stat that actually applies to his entire career to this point. Still just under 20 years old, there’s a bright future ahead for Vargas if he can stay healthy.

Pitching – Zach Thornton, P Brooklyn

Thornton had a so-so season in 2024 between St. Lucie and Brooklyn, compiling a 4.10 ERA in 20 games between the two squads. This year, he still has yet to allow a run and is barely allowing baserunners through three starts. His latest start was his best yet, and a promotion to Binghamton may not be too far off if he continues to pitch this way.

Triple-A

For the second straight week, the Syracuse Mets (5-9) dropped their series, winning just two of six and scoring just 16 runs in six games against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

Gilberto Celestino paced the team in batting average, on-base percentage, and OPS through the six-game series, going 6-for-16. Despite leading the team in those categories, he didn’t record any extra-base hits and only drove in one run.

Joey Meneses was the offense’s other standout performer as he continues to build on a strong start to the season. Meneses went 7-for-22 against the IronPigs with three doubles and five RBIs. Through the early going, Meneses leads the International League with 11 doubles, four more than the next highest batter. Meneses and his .924 OPS lead the Syracuse Mets by a lot 14 games into the season.

Brandon Sproat had his best start of the season so far in this series, striking out six batters in 4 1/3 innings while allowing one run. He allowed two hits and two walks in the effort.

Brandon Waddell, who has been excellent to start the season, delivered the best overall start of the series, tossing five scoreless innings. He allowed a hit and two walks and struck out four batters. Through three starts, Waddell owns a sparkling 1.35 ERA.

Out of the bullpen, Anthony Gose tossed two more scoreless innings to bring him up to six scoreless on the young season. Rico Garcia also impressed, allowing no runs in 2 1/3 innings. He has a 1.93 ERA in four appearances.

Double-A

Nick Lorusso had by far the best series of any of the Rumble Ponies’ bats. The 24-year-old went 4-for-12 with all of his hits going for extra bases—three doubles and a home run.

Nick Morabito has struggled in his first action above the High-A level, but he had a decent week by leading the team with five hits in the five-game set. He recorded one double and two RBIs and also stole five bases. On the downside, he struck out eight times in 18 at-bats and didn’t record a walk.

Nolan McLean and Jack Wenninger have been the two standout pitchers for Binghamton in the early going. They both recorded their second starts of the year in this series, and each delivered a performance of five innings, allowing just one run each. Wenninger especially impressed, striking out nine with just two hits and a walk allowed, while McLean struck out six and allowed four hits and three walks.

Joander Suarez had an excellent outing out of the bullpen, tossing four scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. He also struck out six in the effort. That was Suarez’s first outing of the year after recording a 3.92 ERA in Binghamton a year ago.

High-A

The Brooklyn Cyclones (6-3) split their series against the Hudson Valley Renegades, keeping them three games above .500. Both teams scored 22 runs in the six-game set.

Chris Suero continued his rollicking start to the year, going 4-for-16 with three doubles and a home run. He was tied for the team lead in the series as well with three RBIs. Through eight games, Suero has a monster 1.234 OPS.

Eli Serrano has also been fun to watch in Brooklyn, both at the plate and in the field. He added four more hits to his ledger in this series, including a double and a home run. He also stole three bases. His OPS is just a notch above 1.000.

Boston Baro has not been off to the same kind of start as Suero or Serrano, but he started to heat up against Hudson Valley. He recorded his first two extra-base hits of the year—a triple and a home run—and had an .818 OPS for the series. For the year, it currently sits at .661.

Several pitchers delivered scoreless efforts against the Renegades, including Noah Hall (4 2/3 innings, eight strikeouts), Anthony Nunez (3 2/3 innings, eight strikeouts), Zach Thornton (five innings, six strikeouts), and Joel Díaz (four innings, five strikeouts). R.J. Gordon also impressed in two starts, allowing just two runs in 7 2/3 innings while striking out seven.

Low-A

The St. Lucie Mets (4-5) split their series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers despite some much-needed offense from the team. In six games, St. Lucie scored an impressive 38 runs and gave up 29.

Much of the offense in this series came from Drew Gilbert, who played in four games as he rehabs an injury. The former Astros prospect recorded eight hits in 15 at-bats, including two doubles and two home runs. He also walked three times without striking out. Even if it’s just in Low-A, it’s great to see Gilbert crushing the ball after struggling during an injury-plagued 2024 campaign.

As great as Gilbert was, you could argue A.J. Ewing was even more impressive. The 2023 draft pick struggled in St. Lucie a year ago but has looked extremely comfortable thus far. Against Lakeland, Ewing went 11-for-22 with two doubles, a home run, and a whopping nine RBIs. He also stole three bases. In eight games, he owns a 1.204 OPS.

In two games including one start, 2024 seventh round draft pick Will Watson looked stellar against the Flying Tigers. Watson tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out nine. These appearances were just the third and fourth outings of Watson’s professional career, so the early success is very encouraging.

Matt Allan also continues to be the best story of the young minor league season, as he made his second start of the year. Allan struck out three in 3 2/3 scoreless innings, and he’s now thrown 6 1/3 scoreless innings to start his first season since 2019.

Out of the bullpen, Irving Cota shined yet again, tossing four scoreless innings with three strikeouts. The 21-year-old has now tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings to start the year.

St. Lucie was aided this week by two rehabbing Mets:

• Francisco Alvarez had a hit and two walks in 12 plate appearances. He’ll play with Double-A Binghamton.
• Jeff McNeil went 2-for-5 with a walk, and he’ll continue playing with St. Lucie Tuesday through Thursday this week.
• Both should be playing with Syracuse by the end of the week.

It’s tough to pick between Ewing and Drew Gilbert, but Ewing gets the nod simply because Gilbert is a top prospect and would otherwise be in Syracuse if he weren’t rehabbing. The Mets have high hopes for A.J. Ewing, who is still just 20. The fourth-round draft pick from 2023 has been excellent to start the season after he had just a .689 OPS in 71 games for St. Lucie last year.

Pitching – Will Watson, P St. Lucie

Will Watson is another player the Mets are excited about. The 22-year-old out of USC has yet to give up a run in 7 2/3 innings this year and has only allowed five baserunners. There have been some standout pitchers in the Mets’ system early this year, and Watson has been among the best. He could be part of a great 2024 draft class.

Starling Marte played in nine innings for the Syracuse Mets on Friday in what is likely his final rehab assignment. Manager Carlos Mendoza said that it’s possible Marte is activated on Sunday, which would end his lengthy IL stint. Marte had a .745 OPS prior to his injury and would hopefully provide a jolt for a Mets offense that has generally struggled lately.

Latest Mets News

The Mets defeated the Marlins 7-3 in the series opener Friday night. Sean Manaea tossed seven strong innings while Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil both hit long balls.

The series between the two teams continues on Saturday at 4:10 p.m. ET. Luis Severino (7-6, 4.17 ERA) will try to break out of a skid facing off against Max Meyer (3-2, 5.20 ERA).

Reliever Dedniel Núñez faced live batters on Friday for the first time since his injury. Núñez has been progressing nicely and could begin a rehab assignment soon. Along with Marte, he could be another key addition to the team given his 2.43 ERA and 0.93 WHIP prior to landing on the IL.

In a news conference, David Stearns told reporters that Kodai Senga is about a week to 10days away from upright throwing. Stearns specified that he isn’t sure if Senga will be ready to pitch in October should the Mets make it to the postseason.

Stearns also gleamed about prospect Brandon Sproat, who has risen from High-A to Triple-A in his first season in pro ball, and didn’t deny that he or Luisangel Acuña could be called up in September.

The Dodgers placed pitcher Tyler Glasnow on the injured list with right elbow tendinitis. Glasnow has been great for the Dodgers this year, owning a 9-6 record with a 3.49 ERA.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto threw 17 pitches in his first live session since going on the injured list. Yamamoto faced five batters and is set to go through at least two more live sessions before potential rehab assignments.

Per Robert Murray of FanSided, the Tigers DFA’d infielder Gio Urshela. Urshela had a .619 OPS in 92 games with Detroit this season. The Tigers also announced that prospects Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney were selected from Triple-A, while Akil Baddoo was optioned.

Murray also reported that the Red Sox DFA’d Dominic Smith. The former Met had a .706 OPS in 83 games in Boston this year.

Rob Bradford of the Baseball Isn’t Boring Podcast reported that the Red Sox officially signed Rich Hill to a minor league deal, and he is expected to report to Triple-A Worcester early next week.

According to Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase, the Rockies released catcher Elias Díaz. Díaz was the All-Star Game MVP just a season ago, but he has a .693 OPS this year.

Former MLB pitcher Miguel Batista graduated in the Dominican Republic with a Master’s Degree in Criminal Procedure Law. Batista is a former Met who pitched in 39 games with the team between 2011 and 2012.

A federal judge blocked plans for Venu Sports, which was set to be a joint streaming venture by ESPN, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery.

Jeffrey Colon also struggled mightily, allowing five baserunners and two runs in an inning of work.

The Mets received some prospect promotion news on Sunday, with Trey McLoughlin moving up from Double-A Binghamton. McLoughlin pitched to a 2.08 ERA in 30 1/3 innings of work with the Rumble Ponies.

Binghamton shut down Richmond in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.

The Binghamton pitching staff surrendered just two runs, with one coming off Luis Moreno and Nolan Clenney within the first six innings. Cam Robinson, Daniel Juarez, and TJ Shook combined for four scoreless innings out of the bullpen, with Robinson and Shook not allowing a baserunner. Shook secured the win in what was his second appearance for Binghamton.

The Rumble Ponies also received some prospect promotion news, with Dakota Hawkins receiving the call from High-A Brooklyn. Hawkins had a 4.34 ERA in 66 1/3 innings pitched with the Cyclones.

Rome then scored two in the top of the sixth, holding a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Jeffrey De Los Santos hit a two-run homer to tie the game before Omar De Los Santos delivered the walk-off blow.

Jonathan Pintaro had a decent start, allowing an earned run in 4 1/3 innings, but Henry Henry allowed Rome to extend their lead by allowing three runs without securing an out. After Brooklyn tied the game, Sean Reid-Foley struggled in his rehab appearance, surrendering two runs in two-thirds of an inning. Justin Lawson and Eduardo Herrera then shut it down as Brooklyn grabbed the win. Herrera was especially impressive, striking out five in two perfect innings of work.

Zach Thornton started the game and allowed an earned run in 2 1/3 innings before Brayhans Barreto let the game get away. Barreto, who began the year in the FCL, made his second appearance in Low-A St. Lucie and allowed four runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. That allowed the Cardinals to go up 5-1, which remained the final score.

Wilson Lopez, Cristofer Gomez, and Alfred Vega all pitched a clean inning of relief, with Gomez and Vega finishing off the game with a combined two perfect innings.

The Mets blew a four-run lead, dropping the first game of their series with the RailRiders. Rylan Bannon and Luke Ritter drove in runs in the first inning, and Cortes helped with a solo homer in the second. SWB battled back, tying the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning, but an RBI ground out by Rhylan Thomas gave Syracuse a 5-4 lead heading into the eighth. Jeter Downs‘s homer in the top of the ninth tied the score and sent the game into extras, where SWB attacked early, scoring the free runner and another pair.

Bannon left the game early after getting hit by a pitch in the helmet. Catcher Hayden Senger also left the game early after fouling a ball off his foot.

Senga looked like the Ace from last year in his second rehab appearance after dealing with his shoulder strain injury. After giving up a leadoff double, Kodai would find his groove, eventually 98 MPH on his fastball and collecting a strikeout to end the first inning. The second frame was more of the same; he struck out a batter, conceded a hit, and earned a ground out. It was a successful rehab start for Senga, who picked up ten whiffs (five from his ghost fork) and stretched to 52 pitches without any injury concerns.

Led by a great start by Tyler Stuart and two home runs, Binghamton took down New Hampshire in extra-innings 3-2. Stanley Consuegra launched his first Double-A home run, while JT Schwartz hit the game-winning long ball, his fifth of the season. Schwartz has been an underrated prospect in the Mets system since he was drafted in 2021. He has a career .280 batting average and .777 OPS but lacks the typical power from the first base position (only 15 HR in his minor league career).

Stuart continues to be Mr. Consistent for Binghamton, logging another quality start. Despite allowing at least one earned run in every outing this season, he has only given four+ ER in a game three times out of 15 games. Stuart is a typical ground ball pitcher and does not give up home runs (allowed only two homers this season). He can strike out his fair share, collecting 11 K’s in his previous start on July 1st.

HIGH-A

After a putrid start to the season, optimism is flowing for the Mets lately, with the imminent return of the team’s ace the most recent reason.

Kodai Senga intends to begin a minor league rehab assignment next week, the 31-year-old told reporters Tuesday.

“I feel really good mechanically and physically,” Senga said through an interpreter.

Senga has dealt with a capsule strain in his right shoulder, as well as nerve inflammation in his triceps.

On Sunday he faced live hitters for the first time, throwing 22 pitches, and will throw another session on Thursday.

Senga’s return provides a potentially monumental boost for a Mets squad that is playing its best baseball of the season in recent weeks, winning 11 of its last 14 games.

Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner indicated at the owners’ meetings on Wednesday that sustaining a $300-million-plus payroll each season might not be feasible in the long term. Steinbrenner’s statement comes at a notable juncture, as Juan Soto is expected to enter free agency after the 2024 season. Despite this, Steinbrenner mentioned last week that he is willing to negotiate an extension for the star slugger during the season, a departure from his usual practice of avoiding in-season contract talks.

The Texas Rangers are sending right-hander Jon Gray to the injured list because of a groin strain, manager Bruce Bochy announced this morning, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. 1973: East Coast fans tuning in to watch the Mets face the Dodgers in Los Angeles on May 24, 1973, likely expected an early night. The visiting Mets, not known for their powerful offense, had Tom Seaver pitching against Tommy John in one of the league’s top pitchers’ parks. The game went on as anticipated for the first six innings, with Seaver holding the Dodgers to three runs and John allowing just two, pitching into the seventh.

In the top of the eighth, outfielder George “The Stork” Theodore singled to tie the game. This proved to be the last big offensive play until well past 4 a.m. ET. A total of five relievers — two for the Mets and three for the Dodgers — held both teams to just 14 singles over the next 11 innings. The Mets finally broke through in the 19th inning, scoring four runs with extra-base hits from Rusty Staub and Ed Kranepool. Jim McAndrew then efficiently closed out the bottom half for the save, his final pitch coming five hours and 42 minutes after the game’s start. The Mets won with a final score of 7-3.
