Per Mike Puma of the New York Post, outfielder Starling Marte expects to start appearing in minor league rehab games next week, and he will be traveling to Port St. Lucie on Monday. Marte has been sidelined since late June with a knee injury and his recovery has been slow. Marte had a .745 OPS on the year before his injury and was slashing .333/.395/.522/.916 against lefties. If he’s able to return without any setbacks, he could form a strong platoon with Jesse Winker in right field.

The Mets (58-51) defeated the Angels (47-63) 5-1 on Friday night. Paul Blackburn impressed in his Mets debut, allowing just one run in six innings. Pete Alonso also hit his third home run in the last five games to give him 23 on the year.

The Mets and Angels continue their series on Saturday night with David Peterson (5-1, 3.52 ERA) going up against José Soriano (6-7, 3.69 ERA). The game will be broadcast on SNY with first pitch scheduled for 9:38 p.m. ET.

Prior to Friday’s game, the Mets activated Paul Blackburn and optioned Tylor Megill to Syracuse in a corresponding move. Megill is expected to remain stretched out and start in Triple-A. The Mets also outrighted catcher Logan Porter to Syracuse.

Mets’ top prospect Brandon Sproat had an utterly dominant performance for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Friday. Sproat struck out 13 batters in five scoreless innings, including a span where he struck out 11 consecutive batters. He now owns a 2.05 ERA with 110 strikeouts in 87 2/3 innings between High-A and Double-A this year.

Ronny Mauricio underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove scar tissue from his right knee. Per the Mets, “he remains on pace to be back to competition this offseason and will progress his rehab as tolerated.”

Minor league pitcher Matt Allan, who hasn’t appeared in a regular season game since 2019, threw a baseball in Port St. Lucie on Friday. Allan was a 2019 third-round draft pick who has battled numerous injuries since then. Despite this, he is attempting to comeback and continue pitching.

It’s been quite the turnaround for New York, who started their season 0-5 and looked like one of the worst offensive teams in the league. Since then, the Mets have won 11 of 14 games and look comfortable after their miserable start to the season. The Mets have a chance to win the series with the Dodgers if they grab a win on Saturday.

Following the game, Carlos Mendoza expressed concern over the left thumb of Francisco Álvarez, who exited the game early after appearing to injure his thumb stumbling during a turn for second base. He underwent an MRI after Friday’s game to determine the severity.

The topic of today’s Mets mystery: Jed Lowrie and his injury.

The facts surrounding the case:

March 2019: Lowrie went on the IL with a left knee capsule sprain.

May 2019: Lowrie sprained his left hamstring during a rehab stint with the Syracuse Mets. Brodie Van Wagenen soon addressed the infielder’s injury, saying the 35-year-old had “kinetic issues” with his entire left side.

July 2019: Lowrie suffered a right calf sprain.

September 2019: After an extensive rehab assignment, Lowrie was activated by the Major-League club for the final month of the season and went hitless in seven at-bats.

March 2020: Lowrie showed up to Spring Training with a full leg brace and didn’t participate in any exhibition games.

July 2020: Lowrie shows up to Spring Training 2.0, still with the full leg brace, and declares himself “full-go”, but doesn’t clarify the nature of his injured leg/side/who knows what, saying “he doesn’t want to offer any distractions.” Lowrie was also captured gingerly running the bases with his leg brace on.

The Brooklyn Cyclones lost game one of their best-of-three series on Wednesday 5-4 to the Hudson Valley Renegades.

Brooklyn took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth when Rays’ 2019 first rounder Greg Jones hit a two-run homer off Cyclones right-hander Michel Otanez.

The Cyclones last chance came in the eighth inning when Yoel Romero was hit by a pitch and Ranfy Adon singled with two outs. Romero made the final out of the inning at third base and then the Cyclones when down in order in the top of the ninth inning.

Otanez pitched four innings, allowing five earned runs on three hits and four walks. It was a rare bad outing for the hard thrower that had a 2.97 ERA in seven starts for Brooklyn in the regular season.

Mitch Ragan, Mets’ 2019 15th round pick, pitched three scoreless innings with two strikeouts out of the bullpen. The right-hander finished with a 3.09 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, and .208 AVG against in 35 innings for the Cyclones.

Right-handed Jared Biddy finished up with a scoreless eighth inning.

The Cyclones offense was led by left fielder Antoine Duplantis with two hits and two runs scored. Right fielder Adon went 2-for-4 for the only other Cyclone with multiple hits. Center fielder Jake Mangum went 1-for-4 with an RBI while catcher Jake Ortega was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Game two of the series is Thursday night in Brooklyn at 6:30 p.m. The Cyclones will receive a boost on offensive as Mets veteran Jed Lowrie will join the team as he continues his rehab assignment.

Right-handers Nathan Jones and Matthew Allan are scheduled to pitch for Brooklyn. Allan was the Mets third rounder this year and Jones was their fifth round pick.

Tim Healey of Newsday reports Mets reliever Robert Gsellman played catch with the hopes of returning to the Mets bullpen this season.

Gsellman has been on the Injured List retroactive to August 14. Initially, it was classified as right triceps soreness. Subsequently, he has been diagnosed with a torn lat. That is the same injury which cost Noah Syndergaard almost all of his 2017 season.

Aside from the nature of the two injuries, Gsellman’s potential return could be compromised by the Brooklyn Cyclones being the only affiliate to make the playoffs. As a result, the chances of his getting an opportunity for a rehab assignment are slim to none. Keep in mind that assumes he may be physically able for one at some point before the end of the year.

This year, Gsellman made 52 appearances for the Mets going 2-3 with one save, a 4.66 ERA, 1.366 WHIP, 3.3 BB/9, and an 8.5 K/9. If he is able to reasonably repeat this level of performance for the rest of the year, he will be a boost to a struggling bullpen.

According to Justin Toscano from The Record, Mets veteran second baseman Robinson Cano will begin a rehab assignment on Saturday with the Brooklyn Cyclones.

The Cyclones are in the middle of a playoff race, with them trailing the Hudson Valley Renegades by one game for the division lead.

Cano, 36, has been on the injured list since August 5 when he was diagnosed with a torn left hamstring.

The eight-time former All-Star is hitting just .252/.295/.415 with 23 doubles and 10 homers in his first season with the Mets. He was acquired along with reliever Edwin Diaz during the offseason from the Mariners in exchange for Justin Dunn, Jarred Kelenic, Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak, and Gerson Bautista.

It was poor timing for the injury as Cano was 9-for-15 with five extra base hits in the four games leading up to it.

While 2019 has pretty much been a lost season for Mets second baseman Robinson Cano, there is still some hope left for a return this year as he is at Citi Field, preparing to take live batting practice according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

Cano has been out since August 4, when he was diagnosed with a torn left hamstring. Cano has struggled to live up to expectations even when he has played this season, as he has posted just an 85 wRC+ and 0.3 fWAR.

There was doubt as to whether Cano would return at all this season, and while it is still not a sure thing, this is certainly a good sign that the Mets may be able to work him back to full speed before the season ends and the Mets begin a potential playoff run.

DiComo notes that an injured player taking batting practice is usually followed by a rehab assignment, so we will wait and see in the upcoming days if Cano is assigned to rehab with any of the Mets minor league teams before the minor league season ends.

According to Mike Puma of the NY Post, Brandon Nimmo is close to rejoining the Mets. Puma writes that Nimmo needs to play two games in a row, which could happen this Tuesday and Wednesday, before the Mets activate him.

Nimmo, who hasn’t play since May 21, began his rehab assignment on August 16 for High-A St.Lucie. On Sunday, Nimmo collected three hits and played all nine innings in center field.

Before landing on the IL with a neck injury, he was batting .200/.344/.323 with three home runs and 14 RBI. Last season, the outfielder launched 17 home runs with 49 RBI, and nine steals, while hitting .263/.404/.483.

Having Nimmo back in the mix greatly improves the Mets’ outfield depth, and could give the Mets a boost down the stretch, especially if he could produce like he did in 2018.

Jed Lowrie made another rehab appearance for the St.Lucie Mets on Saturday night in which he went 1-for-2 while playing four innings at second base.

Lowrie, 35, was dealing with a multitude of leg injuries before starting his rehab assignment on August 20. However, it was the first time he has played the field since May in a game. So far, he is 3-for-10 during his rehab assignment.

Unfortunately, the Mets have yet to see Lowrie take the field for them, but the team still expects him back this season as Brodie Van Wagenen said last week.

In 2018, Lowrie hit .267/.353/.448 with 23 homers and 99 RBI to give himself a 121 OPS+ and 4.8 bWAR, splitting time between second and third base.
