Our friend Mark Hale of the NY Post, had this to say this morning in his column.

There’s not much contact right now between the Mets and Paul Lo Duca’s representative. Inactivity, apparently, is consuming the relationship.

Andrew Mongelluzzi, Lo Duca’s rep, told The Post yesterday in regards to the Mets that "it’s been real quiet."

Barring a late development last night with the Mets – which seemed almost unfathomable – Lo Duca will be officially on the market today, the Mets will lose their exclusivity rights with him and the free-agent catcher will be allowed to sign with other teams.

The Mets made it clear that Jorge Posada was their top priority, but last night Posada made it clear that the Yankees were his top priority!

Jorge Posada and the Yankees agreed to a 4-year $52 million dollar deal. It looks like Minaya’s flirtation with Posada only served to get the catcher the 4-year deal he always wanted from the Yankees.

Now the question is, will the Mets still look at other options, or will they still pursue other options like Yorvit Torrealba and Michael Barrett, while Lo Duca fields offers from at least a half dozen other teams?

Who the Mets are really coveting is Yankees catcher Jorge Posada. While Posada is coming off of the finest season in his career, I feel that he will pose a major risk for the Mets. He obviously will cost the Mets much more than Lo Duca will.

My greatest fear is that Posada, who is the same age as Lo Duca, will lose much of his power at Shea and that despite the fact he is coming off of a huge season, he is at an age when catchers tend to start breaking down. I would hate to see the Mets being the ones that reward him for his solid career as a New York Yankee, only to have him give us his worst years at an outrageous cost to the team.

Also, Posada is nowhere near the defensive catcher that Paul Lo Duca is.

Jorge Posada should not be the Mets top priority, Paul Lo Duca should be.

Please re-sign Paul Lo Duca to a 2-year deal, draft a couple of solid catching prospects in the June Draft, and lets hope we can have an internal candidate ready to take over for LoDuca in 2010.

One more thing… Can you please start focusing on the pitching already!
