Two solo home runs in the fourth inning by Gunnar Henderson and Roman Anthony were enough. The lone Dominican Republic run came via a second-inning solo shot by Junior Caminero.

Paul Skenes started the game for the United States and went 4 1/3 innings allowing just the one run. Former Met, Tyler Rogers, got current Met, Juan Soto, to ground into a huge inning-ending double play in the fifth inning to preserve the slim lead.

Behind Rogers, Griffin Jax, David Bednar, Garrett Whitlock, and Mason Miller all turned in scoreless outings of their own.

Bednar got out of big trouble in the seventh as he struck out Fernando Tatis Jr. and Ketal Marte back-to-back to strand the tying and go-ahead runs on base. Meanwhile, Miller ended the game with a controversial called strike three against Geraldo Perdomo. Perdomo was the winning run as the tying run was only 90 feet away at third base.

Two more former Mets factored in greatly on the pitching side of things for the Dominican Republic. Luis Severino started the contest and gave up the solo shot to Henderson. Shortly after, in relief, Gregory Soto gave up the other homer to Anthony.

As for current Mets, Juan Soto ended the game 0-for-4 with the aforementioned costly double play and a strikeout on a pitch well below the zone. Unfortunately, the final strike call was not the only that home plate umpire Cory Blaser got wrong. On a positive note, right-handed relief pitcher Huascar Brazobán overpowered the United Staes striking out three over his 1 1/3 innings of work.

The other semifinal game is slated for a 8:00 pm ET first pitch on Monday. As mentioned, the United States awaits the winner of that match between Venezuela and Italy. The championship game will be Tuesday, March 17.

The United States is set to face off against the Dominican Republic for a spot in the World Baseball Classic championship game.

The U.S. defeated Canada in the quarterfinals while the D.R. mercy-ruled Korea, 10-0, in their quarterfinal match. The Dominicans have not loss a game at the tournament while the United States’ lone loss was against Team Italy.

The winner will take on either Italy or Venezuela in the championship.

Team USA Lineup

1. Bobby Witt Jr. – SS
2. Bryce Harper – 1B
3. Aaron Judge – RF
4. Kyle Schwarber – DH
5. Gunnar Henderson – 3B
6. Will Smith – C
7. Roman Anthony – LF

Team Dominican Republic Lineup

1. Fernando Tatis Jr. – RF
2. Ketal Marte – 2B
3. Juan Soto – LF
4. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. – 1B
5. Manny Machado – 3B
6. Junior Caminero – DH
7. Julio Rodríguez – CF
8. Austin Wells – C
9. Geraldo Perdomo – SS

Starting Pitcher: Luis Severino

Three Things To Watch For

1. Juan Soto. The New York Mets superstar is slashing .316/.458/.632 (1.090 OPS) across 19 at-bats. He also has more walks (five) than strikeouts (four). Soto is the lifeblood of the Dominican Republic’s attack which will surely have the American Mets fans feeling very conflicted.
2. Paul Skenes. You really could not script it much better. Arguably the best pitcher in baseball against arguably the best lineup at the tournament. Skenes tossed four innings of one-hit ball his first World Baseball Classic outing. What does he have in him tonight?
3. Pitch Counts. In the World Baseball Classic, pitches are capped at a certain amount of pitches and it varies by each round. Skenes and his counterpart, Luis Severino, are capped at 80 pitches. If they begin an at-bat up against that number, they can exceed 80, but must be removed after that at-bat concludes. The title game pitch cap is 95 pitches.

The Dominican Republic. And I learned while doing extensive research for the MMO’s WBC team previews that ex and future Mets have won a few MVPs. Daisuke Matsuzaka, Robinson Cano, and Marcus Stroman have all taken home the hardware. This time it’s Amed Rosario’s turn.

Mathias Altman-Kurosaki

The USA will defeat Japan in a rematch of the 2023 finals. Even with Tarik Skubal’s early departure, the Stars and Stripes have plenty of pitching depth in addition to their stacked lineup. I’ll go with Cal Raleigh for the WBC MVP.

Matt Mancuso

It’s difficult not to select the Dominican Republic, a squad that contains the offensive prowess of the 1927 Yankees. Betting against a team whose worst hitter was 30% better than league average last year seems like a fool’s errand. MVP: Juan Soto

Michael Mayer

I have a hard time picking between the US, Japan, the DR, and Venezuela. Those top four teams are really really good. I like the team the US has built quite a bit; it’s balanced well between offense and pitching. I believe they take home the WBC crown, and Bobby Witt Jr. will be the MVP.

Brandyn Pokrass

In a tournament with so much star power, I am going to go with the Dominican Republic. The U.S. would be my other pick, but I see the DR’s lineup having a huge impact game in and game out. As for the MVP, I’ll go with Fernando Tatis Jr.

Christian De Block

2026 will be the year the USA returns to the top. The Dominican Republic and Japan are deep, talented teams that will certainly have something to say. But in the end, USA will get it done, with Aaron Judge taking home the MVP.

Michelle Ioannou

DR isn’t going to be easy to beat, but I’m going to go with Team USA with Paul Skenes as the MVP.

For the first time since 2000, there was a repeat winner in the American League, as Detroit’s Tarik Skubal took home the Cy Young Award for the second consecutive year. Pedro Martinez was the last pitcher to win the award in back-to-back years for the AL, doing so in 1999 and 2000. The most recent back-to-back winner in baseball was Jacob deGrom with the Mets in 2018 and 2019.

Skubal received 26 first-place votes and four second-place votes.

The 35-year-old Hayward, CA native was 13-6 with a 2.21 ERA in 31 starts for Detroit in 2025. He threw 195 1/3 innings, striking out 241, and had the lowest WHIP in all of baseball with a 0.89.

In the National League, after finishing third in the voting in 2024 behind Chris Sale and Zack Wheeler, right-handed pitcher and 2024 Rookie of the Year Award winner Paul Skenes was named the 2025 Cy Young recipient. He was the unanimous winner, nabbing all 30 first-place votes.

In 2025, just his second year in the major leagues, Skenes was 10-10 with a 1.97 ERA. Through 32 games started, he pitched 187 2/3 innings. He struck out 216, which was second in the National League, and had a WHIP of 0.948, best in the NL.

Philadelphia’s Cristopher Sánchez came in second place in Cy Young voting, earning all 30 votes. World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto came in third place, nabbing 16 third-place votes. San Francisco’s Logan Webb received 10 third-place votes and Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta received four third-place votes.

In the American League, Boston’s Garrett Crochet was the runner-up to Skubal, nabbing four first-place votes and 26 second-place votes. Houston’s Hunter Brown came in third, earning 24 third-place votes. Max Fried of the Yankees also earned six third-place votes.

The post MMO Roundtable: 2025 Awards Predictions appeared first on Metsmerized.

It started with Luis Severino, who was credited with seven earned runs and exited the game in the seventh inning with the bases loaded. The bullpen followed with a lackluster performance, and was the nail-in-the-coffin for the Mets as the bullpen gave up a combined seven earned runs on seven hits and four home runs.

Jake Diekman’s struggles continued on Friday night when he gave up an earned run on two hits including a home run and one walk before being replaced before even getting an out. In 37 games (26 2/3 innings) pitched, Diekman is 2-3 with three saves and a 5.06 ERA. He has given up one or more earned runs in four of his last five starts.

Diekman then turned the ball over to Ty Adcock who could not get out of trouble either. Adcock threw 1 2/3 inning and gave up six of the seven earned runs given up by the bullpen, including five hits, three homers, and two walks.

Adcock has appeared in just three games for the Mets since being claimed off waivers from Detroit in May and called up to New York at the end of June. His first two relief appearances were solid as he gave up just one hit on June 29 and a hit and earned run on July 3. However Friday night against the Pirates he could not get out of trouble.

With the struggles by the bullpen and the Pirates taking a 14-2 game to the eighth, the Mets became the next victim of a position player pitching on the mound with Luis Torrens. That was Torrens’ first time being brought in to pitch.

Friday was another game the Mets’ bullpen put the game out of reach. The offense, who had a tall task with Paul Skenes, never got a chance at a comeback as the bullpen allowed seven runs in the last three innings of the game.

Diekman was once again in the middle of the bullpen drama on Friday. Carlos Mendoza spoke on Diekman’s struggles against the Pirates.

“He’s going through a very rough stretch right now,” stated Mendoza. “Either he gets ahead or having a hard time putting hitters away… The fastball velo isn’t there right now. Our job is to get him back on track,” said Mendoza. “Obviously he’s going

through it right now and it’s hard. He’s done it before. He’s been in this league for a long time and he’ll get through it,” he said.

The seven long balls tied the mark for both the most the Mets had ever given up in a game and the most Pittsburgh had ever hit in a single contest. When the carnage was over, Mets catcher Luis Torrens got an out to end the eighth inning.

Switch-hitting Bryan Reynolds homered once from each side of the plate, the second a grand slam off Jake Diekman in the seventh to break the game open. Reynolds drove in six runs and has 16 home runs on the season. Rowdy Tellez followed suit with two home runs as well, including a grand slam of his own.

The Mets got their first look at rookie phenom Paul Skenes, who finished Friday having thrown 74 pitches of at least 100 mph on the year – more than double any other starter in baseball according to MLB’s Sarah Langs.

The 2023 No. 1 overall draft pick didn’t have his best stuff to begin the night, however. Jeff McNeil homered off Skenes on an 0-2 pitch to give the Mets a 1-0 lead in the third inning. It was only the second time McNeil had ever gone deep on an 0-2 count. He now has 61 career home runs. Jose Iglesias later drove in a run with a ground out in the fourth to give the Mets a 2-0 advantage, but Luis Severino (5-3) couldn’t hold the lead.

Severino, who had given up nine home runs over his first 100 1/3 innings this season, gave up three over his next two. Tellez and Jack Suwinski each hit solo shots in the fourth while Reynolds’ first homer of the night was a two-run shot in the fifth to give Pittsburgh (42-45) a 4-2 lead. It was the sixth time across 142 career starts that Severino gave up three home runs in a game.

Skenes gave up two runs on four hits and two walks in seven innings while throwing a career-high 107 pitches (69 strikes) and punching out eight. He is 5-0 with a 2.12 ERA in 10 starts on the season. He entered Friday as the only pitcher in MLB history to surrender fewer than 14 runs and fan at least 70 in his first nine starts.

“Look, he’s another really good arm that we are about to face,” manager Carlos Mendoza said pre-game. “I feel like the past three weeks or so we’ve been facing a lot of good arms and here he’s one of them. Plus-plus fastball, but he also mixes his pitches, especially the splitter. So, we’ve got to be ready for the velo, but we also got to get him up in the zone. And the guys will be ready for it. You know it’s a big day here in Pittsburgh because at least every time he pitches it’s a big day.”

The Mets will get Edwin Díaz back from his 10-game suspension on Saturday. They went 5-5 during that stretch with the bullpen performing poorly in most of the losses. Diekman relieved Severino in the seventh with the bases loaded and no one out. He proceeded to give up a grand slam, single and walk before being pulled without recording an out.

Severino’s final line: six innings, seven earned runs, nine hits, two walks and three strikeouts. It was the most earned runs he has given up in a single game this season. His ERA jumped from 3.42 to 3.83.

The Pirates added three more home runs off Ty Adcock in the eighth as Yasmani Grandal and Michael Taylor hit solo shots before Tellez unloaded his grand slam.

Stat of the Game

The Mets have not shutout an opponent this season through 86 games – a franchise record, per SNY. The previous mark was 60 games in 1965. The streak is the longest to start a season by any National League team since the 2002 Montreal Expos (124 games).

Player of the Game

Pete Alonso went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. It was his 21st double, matching his total for 2023. Shoutout to Luis Torrens, the only Mets pitcher not to allow an earned run. He retired the only batter he faced in the eighth inning.

On Deck

The Mets hope lefty David Peterson (3-0, 3.51 ERA) can help snap their three-game losing streak in the second game of the four-game series at PNC Park. Lefty Bailey Falter (4-6, 3.87 ERA) will start for the Pirates. Game time is 4:05 p.m. ET and it will air on SNY.

The Mets look to rebound after a disappointing finish to their four-game series against the Washington Nationals in D.C. After taking the first two games in extra innings, the Mets struggled to close the deal after blowing a five-run lead on Wednesday and failing to score at all on Thursday.

Now, the Mets will look to reignite their bats as they go right through the heart of the young Pittsburgh rotation.

Mets Lineup

1. Francisco Lindor – SS
2. Brandon Nimmo – LF
3. J.D. Martinez – DH
4. Pete Alonso – 1B
5. DJ Stewart – RF
6. Francisco Alvarez – C
7. Jose Iglesias – 3B
8. Jeff McNeil – 2B
9. Harrison Bader – RF

Luis Severino has made 16 starts this season, tossing a total of 97 1/3 innings with a 3.42 ERA, 3.98 FIP, 1.161 WHIP and a 112 ERA+. Severino allowed four runs over seven innings his last time out against the Houston Astros. It was an outing where if the bullpen was in a better place, Severino would have probably been pulled in the fifth inning after allowing his third and fourth runs of the day. Regardless, he pushed through and gave the Mets another two scoreless innings. He completed at least six innings in each start he made during June, which is exactly what the Mets need. Against the Pirates earlier this season, he allowed one unearned run and nothing else over six innings of work.

The Pirates have the following career numbers against him:

• Oneil Cruz 3-6, BB
• Yasmani Grandal 1-5, BB
• Ke’Bryan Hayes 1-4, 2 K
• Connor Joe 0-2
• Edward Olivares 0-2, BB, K
• Bryan Reynolds 3-7, 2B, BB, K
• Jack Suwinksi 0-8, 2 K
• Michael A. Taylor 2-2, HR
• Rowdy Tellez 1-7, 3 K
• Jared Triolo 0-2, K

Opposing Lineup

1. Joshua Palacios – RF
2. Bryan Reynolds – DH
3. Oneil Cruz – SS
4. Rowdy Tellez – 1B
5. Nick Gonzales – 2B
6. Jack Suwinski – LF
7. Ke’Bryan Hayes – 3B
8. Yasmani Grandal – C
9. Michael A. Taylor – CF

The Mets’ bats will go against one of the more exciting young pitchers in the game tonight in Paul Skenes. Skenes has made nine starts this season totalling 52 1/3 innings with a 2.06 ERA, 2.61 FIP, 1.032 WHIP and a 199 ERA+. Across his last four starts, he has allowed only three runs on 23 hits and four walks over 25 1/3 innings while striking out an absurd 32 batters. One of the only blights on his game so far has been homers as he’s allowed six so far, which is good for just over one home run every nine innings. He also gives up quite a few hits (7.6 H/9), but because he strikes out the world, he can work around this. Tonight will be Skenes’ first start against the Mets.

Game Notes

Reliever Matt Festa, who was designated for assignment on Wednesday, has officially elected free agency after making just one appearance for the Mets. The 31-year-old right-hander posted a 1.76 ERA over 11 appearances with Triple-A Syracuse before allowing five runs against the Astros in extra innings last Sunday.

Bader returns to the starting lineup tonight after missing the past two games with an injury he suffered while colliding with the center field fence on Tuesday. Martinez is also starting and batting third after being omitted from the lineup for two of the Mets’ past three games with a sore ankle.

Three Things To Watch For

1. Skenes’ Heater: Paul Skenes’ four seam fastball averages 99 miles per hour and reaches 102 on a regular basis. As a result, he is in the 99th percentile for fastball speed this season according to Baseball Savant. It is the type of pitch that turns heads and should have everyone’s attention today at the ballpark. Keep an eye on how the Mets approach Skenes the first time through the order and what adjustments they make the second time around.
2. Let’s get some hits. The Mets only had one hit Thursday, which came on a single from McNeil. Every single starter in the Mets lineup struck out at least once while Stewart was the only hitter to draw a walk. The offense has been carrying the club for the last month and was due for a bad day, but it’s going to be tough to bounce back against one of the better talents in the game. During this hot stretch, though, the Mets have consistently risen to the challenge, and hopefully that happens again today.
3. Taking the season series. The first time these two clubs faced one another in April, the Mets were surging after a terrible start to the season. They ended up sweeping the Pirates and in the process earned a winning record for the first time all season. Currently, Pittsburgh is chasing the Mets in the Wild Card standings and sit just a game-and-a-half back of them. If New York beats the Pirates tonight, they will win the season series, thus clinching a tie-breaker scenario that could come in handy at the end of the season.

Let’s go Mets!
