Get ready for this to stick, because this expression has until now only seemed only to apply to our hated crosstown rivals.

A Real Met.

For years, even Mets fans like me would engage ourselves in the debate of whether various performers for the evil empire possessed those intangible, mystical qualities that characterized them as real Yankees. Jeter, Rivera, Pettitte, Posada, Bernie Williams – for sure. A-Rod, Clemens, Giambi – not so much.

But after years on the back side of the desert, it was the tears shed by the legend-in-his-own-time Wilmer Flores that laid the foundation for defining what a real Met is. With Captain America coming in right behind.

And now Matt Harvey has – as unwittingly as Wilmer – helped sharpen this definition. You think that one finger salute in the image was actually intended for Mets fans?

We should all admit that we are insecure enough – and have enough of an inferiority complex about being the second team in the first city – that a real Met is, in our minds, simply someone who really wants to be on this team. Who ascribes real value to the uniform and the franchise. Who wittingly or unwittingly does or says something that screams “I love this team. I really want to be a part of it.”

The Captain has defined Met for Life, but the polar opposite bookends of Flores and Harvey have built the brand. There are certainly many on this and past Mets teams who have enjoyed or even loved being a Met, but were never in a position to affirm that beyond the usual Nuke LaLoosh/Chico Escuela platitudes. But Wilmer found himself in just such a position. And the fact that he did it without preconception makes his tears that much more profound. Zach Wheeler’s plea not to be traded was not far behind.

Let’s face it. For the years following the collapse(s) and subsequent decline, being a Mets fan was something you might utter under your breath, and then only when someone asked you. The shame or embarrassment was enough to cause you to fly under the radar.

And it was equally true that being a Met held little meaning for the players.

Wilmer was the catalyst for changing all of that, now in league with the returning captain. And it wasn’t just the tears and the fist pump. Flores’ walk-off homer on the last day of July and David’s go ahead single on Monday – both in critical games against the team picked by 100% of the chattering class to win the division – may well stand as defining moments of a memorable campaign.

This is so revealing of the attitude of the Mets fan. We embrace the lovable and the overachievers – Turk Wendell, Benny Agbayani, Timo Perez et al. And of course we love our Seavers and Goodens and Piazzas. But here is what we don’t love: the guys who are only out for themselves.

We’re not Yankee fans who essentially don’t care about the serial cheating and lying of A-Rod – just his numbers.

For those of you old enough to remember, rewind to Oliver Perez, Tony Fernandez and Richie Hebner. Guys who either didn’t want to play here, and so played at half-speed, or in the case of Ollie, when given a very public opportunity to choose the team over himself by accepting a demotion in the midst of a miserable season after he was gifted a huge contract, put himself above the team.

Matt Harvey and Ollie Perez don’t belong in the same conversation, but now they are.

Many have suspected this narcissism, and we all should have known after the ESPN Dark Knight documentary when Harvey said of the Mets, “This is the team I’m playing for…right now.” We were willing to overlook that because of our excitement at having him back.

But now, the theory that Harvey is all about himself has become a reality at a time when the spotlight – not just locally, but nationally – is on his team.

What Harvey has done – or allowed – is, in a word, inexcusable. Waiting until September, immediately before the team’s biggest series – and his biggest start – of the year, he creates a circus sideshow with perhaps the most inept, ill-conceived press conference we have ever witnessed. And then proceeds to cloud the issue further even as he backpedals and attempts to clarify while being roasted on a spit in the court of public opinion.

And oh, the hypocrisy of it all. Mr. “I can’t wait to pitch in the post-season.” Mr. “give me the ball.” Mr. “I hate this skipping starts and six man rotation business so much I’m going to speak up against the team for doing so.” Ptui.

But there was another revealing moment this season that few if any seemed to notice. Remember when Syndergaard hit that homer to dead center? When Thor reached the dugout, there was jubilation all around…except for Harvey. deGrom was pumped, everyone was smiling and laughing and high-fiving and fist-pumping. Except Harvey. He had a sour expression with that unmistakable look of pure envy. Go back and look at the replay from May 27.

Harvey’s attitude is completely unacceptable to a fan base that now has in Wilmer and David (and Zack) the definition of exactly what a real Met is.

I wanted to write this before Harvey’s last/next-to-last/almost-the-last/whatever start in DC tonight so as to be unaffected one way or another by his performance. Because the fact that Matt Harvey has proven he is not a Real Met deserves to stand by itself, unsullied by the results on any single game.

As hell has no fury like a Mets fan scorned, it is hard to disagree with the delicious proposition of exiling the faux Dark Knight to Colorado for a boatload of talent, including CarGo, so that he can continue thinking only about himself and lament, along with the greed-infested Mr. Boras, the lost dream of a huge payday in 2019, as his ERA soars like the altitude in Denver…and no one cares anymore.

Good morning, Mets fans!

Another nice win last night. A stress-free win, for once. The only blemish on our victory was Jenrry Mejia having to leave early with a torn blister, but considering Mejia’s luck with injuries, I’ll settle for a torn blister any day of the week with that guy. Anyway, my post this morning is going to be about the awesomeness of Gonzalez Germen.

Now, let me start by saying that if, before the season, you had told me I’d be writing a positive, serious (or mostly serious) article about Gonzalez Germen, I would have laughed in your face.

Germen was totally going to be my scapegoat when it came to our terrifying (for us, not our opponents) bullpen. He would be called up early in the year, he would be the worst pitcher on the staff, and I would basically dub him the Face Of The Mets’ Bullpen Struggles (assuming he could beat out Eric Sogard in the fan vote). Basically, Germen was going to be our 2014 version of Ollie Perez (who looked good last night for Arizona, by the way).

Sure enough, Germen was called upon for some late innings work in the second game of the season after Bobby Parnell blew out his elbow on Opening Day. And sure enough, Germen gave up doubles to the first two batters he saw, leading to a Washington run. I started laughing– you know, like one of those sad, “I was right but I was also pessimistic so it sucks that I’m right” laughs…

But Germen hasn’t given up a run since that game. In fact, until he gave up a hit in this third inning of work last night, Germen hadn’t given up a single hit since the second of those two doubles. In that time, Germen has struck out 10 hitters. His 2014 ERA is 0.89 and his WHIP is 0.48. The season is young, and those numbers obviously cannot be sustained, but Gonzalez Germen has been absolutely ridiculous this season. He has been lights out.

Kyle Farnsworth and Carlos Torres have also been fantastic and Jose Valverde as well, his meltdown against the Angels this weekend notwithstanding. Our bullpen won’t be this amazing all season, but early on in the year it looks like the bullpen— which was supposed to be one of our biggest weaknesses— should be decent and has the potential to possibly even be a strength.

I may have been wrong about you, Gonzalez Germen. Please accept today’s Morning Grind as a token of my most sincere apologies, and keep up the absolutely mind-boggling work.

In the event that you are a Mets fan reading a blog, and not Mets reliever Gonzalez Germen, have a great day, and let’s hope our guys can finish off a sweep tonight!

With the loss in game one of yesterday’s doubleheader with the Miami Marlins, the Mets clinched their 5th straight losing season. This shouldn’t come as a shock since it has happened many times in the past – from the newly minted team of the ’60’s to the “Franchiseless” Mets of the late ’70’s and early ’80’s. Hell even the teams from the Mid ’90s as well as the ’02-’04 seasons were exercises in futility. So I figured I would try to compile the All Scrub Mets Team that encompasses players from all these eras – except from the ’60’s because lets face it 99% of the men that played for those Mets teams were either past their prime – or never had a prime to go past.

So without further ado…

My All Time Mets Scrub Team

Manager: Jeff Torborg – He was a winning manager during his tenure with the Chicago White Sox, but I don’t know if it was the expensive payroll of stars ( one of the most expensive payrolls at the time ) or that he melted under the bright lights of New York, but he barely lasted one and a half seasons as the skipper of a sinking ship.

Catcher: Alex Trevino – He was a both offensively and defensively challenged behind and at the plate.

First Base: Mike Jorgenson – Before returning to the Mets in the early ’80’s Mike had been a serviceable reserve outfielder/ first baseman.

Second Base: Luis Castillo – If you find yourself asking why he is on this list you are obviously not a Mets fan.

Shortstop: Frank Taveras – He was your prototypical no hit/all glove infielder. He had speed ( leading the Mets with triples in ’80 ) but he really never got on base enough to flash it.

He sucked. ‘Nuff Said !

Outfield: Jason Bay – See Luis Castillo.

The Mets tried to convert him to an everyday centerfielder. Guess what – they failed.

Outfield: Vince Coleman – File him under “Never sign a player that is a Mets killer” because they will continue to kill the Mets – from the inside!

Starting Rotation:

The luckless Anthony Young…

The Charismatic Jose Lima – too bad he concentrated more on his ” Lima Time” slogan than actually pitching effectively.

The Past his prime Mike Torrez.

The pitcher that obviously didn’t want to be here, Mickey Lolich.

And rounding out the starting rotation – Oliver Perez (See Luis Castillo)

Bullpen:

The ineffective Doug Sisk.

The lead blower, Rich Rodriguez – I still maintain that the only reason why he wasn’t released by the Mets is because he was a friend of then G.M, Steve Phillips from their minor league days.

Ineffective reliever from the early ’80’s. Mark “Bombs Away” Bomback.

Another man who couldn’t hold a lead – even if it was glued to his hand – Ryota Igarashi.

Two words that should send a shiver down your spine Guillermo Mota.

And lest we forget, Luis Ayala.

The closer spot is a tough one since the Mets had many men who were not able to put out the fire and save the game, so by default I went with Braden Looper. Yes Looper was playing through injuries in his last season with the Mets, but he still blew the lead in important games when he was healthy – he didn’t have the killer instinct.

Bench:

The light hitting David Newhan.

The light hitting Dan Norman.

The couldn’t get a hit to save his life Ron Hodges.

And the weak hitting Gary Rajsich

So there is my list… Do you agree/disagree? Who would you add or omit ? Please give your lists in the comments section below.

And with that said….. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!!

This is going to be short and sweet. So here we are slightly over two weeks into the 2011 season and already calls are being made for the team to be sold off into pieces like a Madoff estate sale.

Lets deal Wright and Reyes for the coveted future phenom or phenoms, because certainly that’s what the Mets should get in return for either of them, right? Deal Beltran too. He can get us a few future stars right? Granted when you start the season winning just 5 of 16, every possible scenario, valid or fantasy, gets tossed around.

But to quote Matt Cerrone from Metsblog, “Wash, rinse and repeat“. This is a team that will toy with our emotions all season long. We better get used to it soon or all of us are going to sound a bit schizophrenic, one week lauding the team for playing above average, the next picking off which Met Alderson can sell on Craigslist for the next Steven Strasburg.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a pie in the sky, everything is fine, don’t look behind the curtain type of fan here. I know we have issues and there absolutely may come a time where wholesale changes may be needed. Just not 2 weeks into the season people. The same reaction was made by the fan base when Alderson didn’t give Ollie Perez and Luis Castillo their pinks slips the day he was hired.

Immediately the stories of “it’s the same ole story” floated it’s way around the blogosphere. Alderson as cool headed and handed as they come did his best Daniel Negreanu, and waited until HE was ready and made his own analysis to part ways with Perez and Castillo. The same can be said if he decides to deal any player or players for prospects.

Like a good poker player he’s not apt to show his hand and so far he doesn’t seem to have a tell. He knows, as do the other 29 General Managers, that the New York Mets would love to restock their farm system. The salesman in him also realizes that you buy low and sell high. Dealing any player right now wouldn’t net the Mets even close to what they desire. Timing as the cliché goes, really is everything.

I have to say I didn’t think the knee-jerk reactions were going to be this immediate. Ask yourselves this question: If the Mets were 11 and 5 would you be saying that Alderson and Collins are geniuses? Of course not, it’s 16 friggin games. Wash. Rinse. Repeat for sure.

I understand that New Yorkers lack patience and it’s not as if the Mets have done anything to foreshadow a much brighter season so far. I can also see the usual suspects claiming I’m one of Alderson’s apologists, bowing at some quasi-alter to the man. Give it up already it’s old and boring and to constantly argue Alderson’s legitimacy versus his predecessor is as mind numbing as a Charlie Sheen rant.

I’m also not going to bring up the ownership and it’s financial or lack of financial standing. It is what it is and there’s no sidestepping the issue. It’s just a matter of dealing with it and moving on.

I’m not going to hit you with a myriad of stats here. I know the starting rotation hasn’t started off as well as I and a few others thought. I know the offense at times hasn’t produced and the defense has hurt us, but again – 16 games.

Keep reminding yourselves of that, and when the team goes on a 10 and 5 streak, try not to christen them with the National League east yet. Just imagine how the Yawkies in Beantown are feeling right about now. Ok I’m done.

Updated 3/20 1:00 PM

Oliver Perez left the Mets complex this morning and was not told what was next for him, according to Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal. Costa also says that we should expect a decision by Monday.

Pitching coach Dan Warthen said this morning that no decision has been reached yet on Perez, but there will be a meeting of the minds with Terry Colllins and Sandy Alderson on Monday. – JD

Original Post 3/19 10:00 PM

Yesterday many Mets fans received the 4 words we’ve been praying for. METS CUT LUIS CASTILLO. How can life get better? Oh wait that’s right Oliver Perez still exists. So Sandy, your supposed to be this Anti-Omar, wizard of a GM. Why is Oliver Perez still on the team? Well if Sandy had any last thoughts on the matter, they have likely faded away after today’s performance.

Oliver Perez’s line vs. Nationals today – .2 IP..3 hits..2 ER..1 BB..and a big fat 8.38 ERA for the spring.

I’m sure someone is erasing Oliver Perez’s name from his Digital Domain parking spot as we speak. Likely by tomorrow the news will come down from upper management to go ahead and do the inevitable – Cut Ollie Perez. Sadly this is the best moment Mets fans like I have had to enjoy in awhile. But the facts were plain and simple. Oliver Perez is not worth a roster spot.

My guess was the Mets were only keeping him around for the chance he could be Terry Collin’s desired Long Reliever/2nd Lefty. Similar to Hisanori Takahashi last season except his name is Oliver Perez. The experiment is clearly not working.

As I have been reading through a lot of postings and responses to signings, lack of signings – it is the same general theme that is occurring. The Mets fanbase being up in a stir over the lack of big signings.

When the Mets signed Jason Bay for 66 Million dollars, it didn’t seem to be enough. When they signed K-Rod for 37 million with that sneaky vesting option, it didn’t seem to be enough. When they signed Oliver Perez for 36 million, it didn’t seem to be enough.

The mediocrity isn’t caused by management refusing to open their wallets but rather when they opened their wallets they purchased lackluster players. They overpaid for market premiums (LF bats, unsure pitching options, closers) because they played every year since 2005 like a win-now year. The only problem is, if a team doesn’t win-now with said team – when it wears off, your left with a payroll of albatross contracts that leave no financial flexibility. If the Mets would’ve signed Carl Crawford, the response would’ve been great – until year 5 of his deal when his legs, which are directly tied to his value would’ve decreased and made him look like, I don’t know…Carlos Beltran with less power?

Look, I as well as every blogger on MMO, blogger on the web and commenter read, write and live the Mets and live through them. Does it hurt to not see them dishing out contracts and being involved with the latest big free agents? Of course. But realistically, i’d rather they be patient and find their mark.

Anyone who has watched the Knicks over the last five years knows – when the ship is sinking, it sinks fast. Bad contracts to Jared Jeffries, Eddy Curry, Jerome James and Jamal Crawford left the franchise in disarray and it took nearly two seasons of cleaning house entirely to even bring them back to playoff level.

The Mets have to be thorough, find players who fit their style of play and for an effective cost. If they had a less-expensive closer, that money could’ve been re-allocated to another position. If Ollie Perez wasn’t signed for so much money, and a lesser starter was instead, for fewer years, then it would be substantially better.

It’s either they can’t win because they overpaid under performing players, or they can’t win because they aren’t overpaying players, period. That is what Omar Minaya knew and attempted to achieve, pleasing the fan base with players who weren’t of the highest caliber but giving them top-dollar contracts.

If not breaking the bank this year does anything, it will prove that restructuring a franchise and changing ideologies takes time, and that time is sadly not seconds.

Oliver Perez is one tough fighter; like a boxer who won’t go down. Batters are pummeling him with jabs, crosses and uppercuts. And more of the same by the media, the fans, and now his teammates. How can one man take such abuse, and not go down for the count.

He claims that he wants to and can succeed in righting himself while on the major league roster working out of the bullpen. Everyone including Ollie knows this is not the case.

The answer is very simple. Ollie wants out. He wants out of New York and the Mets. It is a test of wills between player and owner. He is forcing the Mets hand and they will likely comply sooner rather than later. Ollie will win this battle. But I think Perez and agent Scott Boras are miscalculating the market for him once he is released.

I don’t know where when and how Ollie will resurface. During the period of time when he is under contract to the Mets, any team who claims him will have to pay the Mets $400,000. I don’t think there would be one team to put a claim in on him. If Perez is waived, and has no suitors, he would not pitch in the major leagues this year. He could eventually sign a minor league deal and look like a total hypocrite. Possibly he will go back to his native Mexico and try to hook on with a team there.

Maybe, Ollie just wants to pack it in and go home.

Once Ollie is gone, he wouldn’t be back in a visitors uniform, not even giving Mets fans the opportunity to boo him.

In the you knew it was coming department the Mets have taken Oliver Perez out of the starting rotation today. As of right now there is no announcement on who will be taking his spot in the rotation. Unfortunately Oliver Perez is currently staying on the active roster as he will be placed in the bullpen.

Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork posted the following on his twitter account:

“Ollie says Takahashi pitching better, although Jerry hasn’t officially named the lefty starter. … Ollie says no interest in going to AAA.”

That last part of the quote says everything you need to know about Oliver Perez. Oliver Perez is struggling, there is no doubt about it. In fact he seems like he’s completely lost. According to Ollie and the Mets he’s 100% healthy.

I think the obvious solution would be for the Mets to offer Oliver Perez a minor league assignment, he would accept the assignment, go down to PSL or Buffalo and work on his pitches. Unfortunately for us and the Mets that is not going to happen.

A few weeks ago in Oakland we saw a bit of an argument between the Yankees 3rd baseman Alex Rodriguez and Oakland A’s pitcher Dallas Braden. Braden accused A-Rod of playing for the name on the back of the jersey instead of his team. Technically that was wrong as the Yankees don’t have player names on their jerseys. In all seriousness though the same can be said about the 36 million dollar man Ollie Perez.

Last year the Mets were thinking about sending Oliver down to the minors. Oliver at one point said he would accept the demotion but instead he ran to his agent and his agent called the Mets and vetoed that idea. Ollie then developed a knee injury.

This lack of interest in going to Triple A just shows that Ollie plays for Ollie and not for the Mets. Ollie is guilty of playing for the name on back of the jersey. Would a minor league demotion have worked? Maybe… Maybe not… It did work in the past for Bobby Jones as well as other pitchers in the majors.

The Mets are paying Oliver Perez a lot of money that was not based on past results but on unrealized potential. Obviously the potential has not shown up yet. The Mets have done everything they can to help Ollie but Ollie refuses to return the favor. He’s a selfish player who has shown his true colors. I know he’s owed a lot of money and it’s easy for me to say this since it’s not my money but after this showing the Mets should cut all ties with Oliver Perez and send him on his merry way. He obviously is here to collect a paycheck and nothing else. I’m sure Ollie and his agent would throw a fit if the Mets weren’t interested in paying him anymore.

I don’t feel sorry for Ollie, he could have stepped up, take a minor league assignment and try to work his way back to being the pitcher the Mets are paying for but instead he’s willing to keep under-performing and cashing checks from the Mets. He has turned his back on the Mets and their fans by not trying to improve himself.

I’m done with him, I hope when he does come out in mop up situations he gets lit up and shows that he’s not a major league player. As his numbers get worse and that yellow streak up his back gets darker we will see the true Ollie Perez!

Coming into Spring Training there was a lot of positive buzz on Oliver Perez. Besides new facial hair he had been working out in Arizona for months getting in shape and trying to work on his pitches. Perez arrived in excellent shape, a complete 180 from the year before. People who follow the team on a daily basis said that Ollie was more focused and ready to earn his 36 million dollar contract. Then came the exhibition games and they were not pretty. Ollie did throw strikes but unfortunately those strikes were very hittable and would often go out of the park. A slimmer Ollie, with new facial hair on a regular basis produced the same results. We all hoped that this was just Spring Training and once the regular season started Ollie would turn around and produce the way a pitcher who makes 12 million dollars a year ought to produce.

Unfortunately inconsistent Ollie started the season. In Ollie’s first start of the season he lasted just 5.2 innings, allowed 4 hits, 4 walks and 4 runs and posted an ERA of 6.35. In Ollie’s second start looked a lot better and a bit promising as he dominated the Cardinals, including Albert Pujols. His 3rd start saw go 5 innings, allowing 8 hits with just 2 runs. In his 4th start against the Dodgers he couldn’t make it out of the 3rd inning, had a decent start against the Reds and of course once again on Sunday he walked 7 guys, throwing almost 100 pitches by the 3rd inning before he was taken out of the game. This is not the start Ollie needed and the Mets deserve from their 36 million dollar man.

The Mets yesterday according to Adam Rubin plan to allow Ollie to start Friday. I know as of yet nobody has said this but I have to believe this is a make or break start for Ollie. There is only so much the Mets can really take from him. Unfortunately the length and salary of his contract poses a problem for the Mets. What exactly can the Mets do if Ollie continues to struggle?

Cut Him? This would be what most Mets fans would say. I think I speak for most of us when I say we are tired of waiting for his “potential” to kick in. He’s not a young man no more, he’s 28 years old, he’s been in the majors for 8 years, and he is a veteran pitcher. However, the Mets do not like to eat salaries and Ollie is owed 24 million dollars for the next 2 years. This option would also hurt Omar Minaya whose job is in question. If Omar has to cut Ollie Perez from this team, he would have wasted a lot of the Wilpon’s money and we all know how the Wilpon’s feel about that.

Assign To The Bullpen? The Mets briefly tried this last year before Ollie developed a knee injury that would cost him the season. I honestly think this would not help much. Ollie is a head-case on his best days. If he has any confidence left a demotion to the pen would shatter it. I honestly don’t think this would help either Ollie or the Mets. I know I wouldn’t trust Perez in close situations and the only time I want to see Ollie come out is in a mop-up role. Once again do you really think the Mets are going to allow a guy making 24 million for the next 2 years doing just mop-up jobs?

A Minor League Assignment? I think this could be the best option for both parties. Ollie could go down, work on his pitches, work with the coaching staff to get his game back on track. The Mets would have to explain this is not a permanent demotion to the minors, just a way to help him improve his game. It has worked in the past for other players. Unfortunately Ollie didn’t like this option last year as when the team was exploring this option instead of being a man and going to Omar and management to talk about his reluctance to go down to the minors he called up his agent and manager who told the Mets Perez would not accept a minor league demotion. That right there showed me what kind of player he is.

The Mets are in a bad situation with Ollie. There are not a lot of options but they are stuck with him for this season and for 2011. He makes too much money, which is on Omar Minaya. He panicked last year and gave into Boras and Perez. Hopefully Ollie has grown up a bit from last year and if the Mets ask him to take a minor league assignment he will, otherwise we are in for a long 2 years with Ollie Perez.

Okay, it might not be as storied as Yankee Stadium but it still doesn’t change the fact that Shea Stadium is also closing, being knocked down, and destined to be a parking lot for Citi Field. I’m angry with the Mets right now. It seems like every year around this time, we turn into a bunch of choke artists. Johan Santana was supposed to pitch the game of his Mets career…..tomorrow. Now that desperation calls for Santana to pitch today after throwing 125 pitches on Tuesday. It could be pretty, but at the same time, the Marlins could rock Santana. And then who pitches Sunday? Ollie “Big Game” Perez? I saw what Ollie Perez could do on Wednesday. Granted, the Cubs are a much better team than the Marlins but this is a bigger game. I’d rather have Johan pitch tomorrow.

I was watching some of the last game at Yankee Stadium, and it was one of the first times I’ve actually seen Yankee fans embrace their team’s amazing history. It makes me wish we were in the bliss of mathematical elimination that way tomorrow’s game can be what it was meant to be: a day to embrace Shea Stadium’s history with Mets greats and some pretty Amazin’ highlights.

Instead, we’re still making a run for the playoffs. If we win the game and at least tie for the Wild Card, there will be instant euphoria because Shea will live to see another day. On the other hand, if we lose the game, we’ll be heartbroken. Shea would be closing without a playoff run. Another year, another punchline for ESPN.

This was supposed to be the final installment of Hot or Not. Everybody’s a Not. We need to be able to play well in September otherwise what we did in July and August doesn’t matter. Shea deserves better than this.
