The New York Mets are the first team to 20 wins in Major League Baseball.

It was an up-and-down series for the Mets in Washington – a four-game set featuring a slew of crushing lows and exhilarating highs. Yes, April baseball really can be entertaining and frustrating in equal measure.

The Mets dropped their first real clunker of 2025 on Sunday, thanks to a horror show by the bullpen. They were also walked off twice in this series. However, this team responded and then some in the finale, racking up 19 runs against the Nationals in a true blowout on Monday.

As a result, the Mets earned a series split and started the week as the best team in baseball. All in all, things are pretty, pretty, pretty good in Queens right now.

To that end, let’s proceed with the latest edition of 3 Up, 3 Down…

Via Mets

3 UP

OFFENSIVE OUTBURST

The red flags hovering over Brandon Nimmo‘s game were starting to become more and more notable. The outfielder has looked lost at the plate, especially with runners in scoring position. He entered Monday’s game just 6-for-37 with runners in scoring position. Furthermore, falling behind in the count has hurt Nimmo this year. He owned just a .115 on-base percentage when going 0-1 in the count. However, all those struggles seemed a million miles away from what we witnessed on Monday. Nimmo truly had a day for the ages, going 4-for-6 with two homers – including a grand slam – and a franchise-tying record nine RBIs. Yes, you read that right.

Per Elias, Nimmo became just the second player in MLB history, behind Mike Moustakas (2015), to record nine RBIs in the sixth inning or later of a game. He also became the first player to drive in at least nine runs since Shohei Ohtani did it last September. It is rare to see a player drive in nine runs in a single game, which is a testament to just how elite Nimmo was on Monday. He also tied Carlos Delgado for the all-time franchise record for most RBIs in a single game. Granted, it is just one game, but Nimmo showed on Monday just how valuable a weapon he is in this lineup when he’s at the peak of his powers. Hopefully, the series finale in Washington will act as a turning point for Nimmo and his season.

BOUNCING BACK & REINFORCEMENTS

I’m going to cheat and squeeze two points into one segment here. You have to love the character of these Mets. And you also have to applaud them for the mental fortitude they showed in Washington. After melting down on Sunday, few would have been surprised if this team had gone out and blown the series on Monday. Instead, the Mets did what they’ve been doing all year – they responded emphatically. The entire team absorbed the gut punch, strapped on their big boy pants and went to work in righting the previous day’s wrongs. The result? One hell of an answer to split the series and come back home with the best record in baseball. That’s what good teams do. They dig in and refuse to quit, no matter how many times they’ve been kicked in the cubes.

The Mets suffered two brutal losses in Washington – both of the walk-off variety – yet they responded each time with impressive performances. It is still early, but the resiliency and the ability to bounce back immediately are hallmarks of any great team in any sport. And, so far, it sure seems like the New York Mets have both of those attributes by the bucketload.

It also helped that some reinforcements arrived over the weekend. Both Jeff McNeil and Francisco Alvarez were activated from the IL on Friday. And both players certainly made their presence felt. McNeil finished with four hits, a home run, a triple and three RBIs. Alvarez, meanwhile, hit a double, and a home run and also finished with three RBIs. With those two players back, the Mets are now deeper than they were before. With the best still yet to come from certain players, coupled with the fact that Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas are still yet to return, the Mets probably have another level or two to reach before they are really operating at the peak of their powers.

STARTERS DELIGHT

Mets starting pitchers have now allowed four or fewer runs in each of their first 29 games to begin the season. That’s per OptaSTATS, and that is one hell of a stat indeed. Whether it is sustainable or not is beside the point. The starting rotation has performed way above expectations so far in 2025, and that group deserves all the credit in the world. All four starters in this series did their jobs.

Kodai Senga allowed two earned runs with five strikeouts over six innings. Clay Holmes overcame a lengthy rain delay to deliver five scoreless innings. Tylor Megill was solid while going over six innings. And Griffin Canning was the best of the bunch after tossing five shutout innings in the series finale. Again, the starting pitching will probably experience a reality check at some point. But, for now, the rotation is more than playing its part in what has been a stellar start to the season for the Mets.

3 DOWN

BULLPEN MELTDOWNS

It was probably only a matter of time until the Mets were dealt a bullpen curveball in 2025. Well, it happened over the weekend in Washington in a big way. The Mets grabbed a late lead in the series opener on Friday, only for Ryne Stanekto allow two runs en route to a walk-off loss. Then, on Sunday, the bullpen completely melted down. José Buttó allowed three earned runs before Stanek gave up another two runs as the Mets blew a 7-1 lead. Stanek’s struggles were particularly concerning, given that he imploded twice in this series. Now, granted, the bullpen was perfect on Saturday, delivering four innings of scoreless relief. But, overall, the relief pitching was directly responsible for New York dropping two of four.

CONSIDERABLE LOSS

Compounding the bullpen struggles was the fact that A.J. Minter had to go on the IL. The lefty, who has been a shutdown arm for the Mets this year, left Saturday’s game with left triceps tightness. After being diagnosed with a lat strain, he was officially placed on the 15-day IL. That loss will hurt the Mets, given that Minter pitched to a stellar 1.64 ERA before getting hurt. He had allowed just two earned runs on six hits with 14 strikeouts across 11 innings this year. Furthermore, this bullpen has been leaned on a lot already, and losing a key body will force others to step up and carry the load.

CAUSE FOR CONCERN?

The fact the Mets have the best record in baseball is all the more remarkable when you consider that Juan Soto hasn’t exactly hit like Juan Soto yet. The superstar hitter is off to a slow start – especially by his lofty standards – and the expected breakout hasn’t happened yet. Sure, he did reach base four times on Sunday, in addition to recording a pair of hits in the series opener. However, Soto has just three home runs on the year and hasn’t gone long since April 15. He also has just 12 RBIs on the season. Still, Soto’s on-base percentage is .378. There is also no denying that he is being pitched differently this season. And you also can’t forget that Soto is still adjusting to a new franchise and the expectations that come with having the biggest contract in baseball.

Overall, Soto’s start, in addition to his lack of power, has been disappointing. That goes without saying. But it is still too early to press the panic button. I have no doubt that the Soto breakout is coming, and it will happen soon.

The Milwaukee Brewers are reportedly nearing a more-than $200 million extension with outfielder Christian Yelich.

Tuesday afternoon, Ken Rosenthal reported in The Athletic that major league sources told the publication the outfielder and organization are closing in on a massive deal for the 28-year-old. Yelich, who is currently on a seven-year, $49.57 million deal, is expected to be a valued centerpiece of the Brewers moving into the 2020 regular season.

While Yelich is set to be paid $12.5 million for this season and $14 million next season with a $15 million club option, the new contract could have him raking in upwards of $35 million annually. If all goes to plan, this would make him one of the highest-paid players in the league. It is unclear what will become of the remainder of Yelich’s contract and his club option in his current deal as this deal comes to a close.

Yelich had an impressive 2019 season, leading the National League with a .329/.429/.671 slash line. The 2018 NL MVP will likely become the focus of the team’s season in 2020, with losses of big names like catcher Yasmani Grandal to the Chicago White Sox, and infielder Mike Moustakas to the Cincinnati Reds.

The deal is expected to be for seven years and will likely be officially announced Friday at the team’s Spring Training facility in Maryvale, Arizona.

The Cincinnati Reds have signed infielder Mike Moustakas to a four-year deal, as was first reported by Jon Heyman of MLB Network. Jeff Passan of ESPN was the first to report that the deal was for four years.

The deal comes shortly after it was announced that the Reds would be non-tendering infielder Jose Peraza, so Moustakas will presumably filling that void. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Moustakas will be primarily playing second base for the Reds.

Moustakas played some second base in 2019 for the Brewers, but has spent the large majority of his career at third. At the age of 31, he posted a 2.8 fWAR last season, his highest fWAR total since 2015.

Passan later added that the deal is four years and $64 million, representing a nice payday for the infielder who’s on the wrong side of 30 and whose skills are likely to decline in the coming years. Moustakas had to settle for one-year deals the last two offseason, but after two solid seasons is finally being offered a long-term commitment. It’s also an interesting move by the Reds, who are not exactly in the prime of a competitive window.

Blue Jays Sign Freddy Galvis

The Toronto Blue Jays and free agent shortstop, Freddy Galvis have agreed to a one-year deal worth $4 million with a 2020 club option per Shi Davidi of SportsNet. In order to make room for Galvis on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated relief pitcher, Danny Barnes for assignment.

As Davidi also noted, the addition of Galvis makes sense for the Jays after they traded away shortstop Aledmys Diaz. It also provides insurance for young middle infielder, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., who can now be spelled over to second base after struggling defensively last season posting a -6.8 UZR and -9 DRS at the shortstop position.

Galvis spent last season with the San Diego Padres, where he set a career high in DRS (7) at shortstop but posted a career-low -4.4 UZR. He also had a solid year offensively putting up a .248/.299/.380 line, with a wRC+ of 85, 13 home runs and 67 RBIs.

Earlier in the offseason, the Mets were reportedly among the teams looking at Galvis and his name was most mentioned when the team was looking to trade for J.T. Realmuto as Amed Rosario was part of the return request from the Miami Marlins.

Padres Eyeing Moustakas

As Jon Heyman of Fancred tweeted out yesterday, while the San Diego Padres are still a candidate to land mega star shortstop, Manny Machado, a more realistic target they’re now looking into is third basemen, Mike Moustakas.

Current Padres’ first basemen, Eric Hosmer has allegedly lobbied for Moustakas, writes Heyman. This is far from a shocking report considering the two players were longtime teammates with the Kansas City Royals and won a World Series together back in 2015.

Marlins Sign Neil Walker

The Miami Marlins have signed veteran infielder, Neil Walker to a one year deal worth $2 million per club announcement and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Walker struggled mightily for the New York Yankees last season slashing a mere .219/,309/.354 line with a wRC+ of 81.

Walker, a Pittsburgh native, spent the first seven years of his career with his hometown Pittsburgh Pirates before signing with the New York Mets in 2016. He would then be dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers towards the end of the 2017 campaign until ultimately returning to New York for another year by signing with the Yankees last offseason.

In order to make room for Walker on their 40 man roster, the Marlins designated relief pitcher, Nick Wittgren for assignment, per Wells Dusenbury of The Sun Sentinel. Wittgren had an up and down year between triple A and the big leagues last season, but nonetheless posted a 2.94 ERA in 32 appearances. He also had a 1.59 ERA in the month of September after being called back up to the majors, which makes him a potentially cheap and solid bullpen option for a lot of ball clubs, who are still seeking relief pitchers on the open market.

Diamondbacks Extend Their Manager

The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed Manager, Torey Lovullo to a contract extension that will add two years to his deal and take him through the 2021 season per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

Since becoming Manager in 2017, Lovullo has gone 175-149 in his first two seasons with one postseason appearance. He also became the fastest manager to record 100 career wins in Diamondbacks franchise history.

Phillies Still in on Harper

Despite false reports that there had been a mega-deal agreed upon yesterday between the two sides, the Philadelphia Phillies are still very much in on outfielder, Bryce Harper, writes Heyman.

Harper met with Phillies Brass in his hometown of Las Vegas several weeks ago and the meeting reportedly had Philadelphia officials come away “very impressed.” Harper is seeking a record-setting deal in free agency and the Phillies have been very vocal about their willingness to spend “stupid money,” this offseason.

San Francisco Giants Seeking Multiple Outfielders

According to Buster Onley of ESPN, the San Francisco Giants are continuing to monitor the market for 2-3 more veteran outfielders. Onley also notes that the club has minimal financial flexibility to do so if they wish to avoid the Corporation Business Tax.

This heavy need in the outfield is due to the departure of all three Giants starting outfielders from a season ago in Hunter Pence, Andrew McCutcheon, and Gorkys Hernandez. This leaves an unproven trio of Chris Shaw, Austin Slater, and Steven Duggar slated to start this year, who only have a combined 511 major league at-bats between the three of them.

Jimmy Rollins Back with the Phillies as Special Advisor

Longtime Philadelphia Phillies shortstop, Jimmy Rollins is returning to the Philadelphia Phillies organization as a special advisor per team Executive Vice President, David Buck. Rollins role will include being a coach during spring training, meeting with sponsors and suite holders, and engaging with fans, along with community outreach.

Rollins played 15 of his 17 seasons in the majors with the Phillies and put up a career stat line of .264/.324/.418. The three time All-Star also won the NL MVP Award in 2007 and is Philadelphia’s all-time franchise leader in hits (2,306) and doubles (479).

Good morning Mets fans! The rumors on who will be the next Mets general manager have been swirling and we saw that in effect yesterday.

Latest Mets News

The Mets are expected to interview Gary LaRocque to potentially fill their general manager position.

Mike Puma of the New York Post originally reported on Thursday that the Mets had interest in Dan Duquette for their GM position.
Did you give a former Cincinnati Reds player a three-year deal this past offseason? If you did, you are probably the Mets and Angels. The Mets gave Jay Bruce $39 million dollars this past offseason while the Angels gave Zack Cozart $38 million dollars. How has that worked out? Cozart is slashing .219/.296/.362 while Bruce is slashing .212/.292/.321.

My suggestion for both teams: swap these guys.

Why it makes sense for the Angels: Bruce is more likely to rebound offensively than Cozart is. Cozart has a career wRC+ of 90 and his wRC+ this year is 85. Bruce’s career wRC+ is 107 while this year, it is 70. It seems like a plausible bet that Bruce will be the better hitter after this season especially given Cozart’s shoulder surgery. He tore his left labrum which is his front shoulder when swinging. So on the Angels side, they would be getting a player who is more likely to be a better hitter than what they are currently situated with. They would also have a clear shot to acquire Mike Moustakas, a Californian who wants to be an Angel and has no qualifying offer.

Bruce also gives them a 1B-RF-DH. Currently, they have some combination of Albert Pujols, Luis Valbuena, Kole Calhoun, and Chris Young at those positions. Pujols is hitting .249/.287/.406, Valbuena is hitting .211/.254/.355, Calhoun is hitting .168/.221/.248, and Young is hitting .168/.252/.363. Finally, some players are being mentored by Jose Reyes. In all seriousness, a semi-healthy Jay Bruce is a clear upgrade over all these guys.

Why it makes makes sense for the Mets: The simple answer is that Jay Bruce no longer has a place on the Mets roster. Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo occupy two out of the three outfield spots. They probably can’t move Yoenis Cespedes so he will be penciled in the outfield over Bruce. While I do expect Cespedes to play in more than 80 games in 2019, it doesn’t make financial sense to pay a fourth outfielder $28 million.

Meanwhile, they do not have a second baseman for 2019. Cozart could come in and play second while filling short and third but I doubt he can handle it full time. By being a backup shortstop, we can finally stop using the excuse that the Mets need Reyes around as a backup SS.

There are concerns about his labrum tear, especially since it is his front shoulder but he has never been a great hitter aside from 2017. He is a career .251/.307/.407 hitter with a .308 wOBA but he does accumulate a lot of value with his glove. Essentially, my point is he has been a serviceable player in the past largely due to his glove, not his bat. So while his shoulder injury might hinder his offense, it was never the forte of his game.

Potential Roadblocks: The first is money. Bruce is owed $28 million while Cozart is owed $25.33 million. It’s a $2.67 million difference so the teams should in theory be able to resolve the issue but never doubt the power of money to some.

The second is the fact that the Angels don’t need to move Cozart. They can always plug him in at second while still signing Mike Moustakas and someone like Matt Adams for a couple million. In my proposal, they would re-sign Ian Kinsler (or someone like him) for $2-$3 million to play second. Kinsler can still play a really good second base despite his poor offense. In theory, the Mets don’t need to move Bruce either but it makes far more logistical sense for them to move him than it does for the Angels to move Cozart.

The solution to this would be either sending more money to the Angels to essentially cover the costs for Ian Kinsler or the Mets could send a prospect to the Angels. It wouldn’t be Andres Gimenez but maybe the Angels could sneak someone in the lower levels who their scouts like.

Other Candidates

Some other candidates I was thinking for in a potential Bruce swap are Mike Leake, Tyler Chatwood, Mike Minor, and Bryan Shaw. There are certainly more but those the first ones I thought of.

The New York Yankees have acquired 25-year-old Brandon Drury from the Arizona Diamondback in the three-way trade also involving the Tampa Bay Rays.

FanRag Sports’ Robert Murray was the first to report on the deal. Initially, the only part of the deal that was reported was of Yankees’ minor-leaguer Nick Solak heading to Tampa Bay.

A short while later, Jon Heyman, also of FRS, confirmed that the deal was indeed a three-way trade that was sending Steven Souza, Jr. to Arizona, Solak and Diamondbacks’ left-handed pitching prospect Anthony Banda to the Rays, with Brandon Drury heading to the Bronx.

Earlier this week, Jim Bowden of The Athletic named the Yankees as his picks to sign free-agent third-baseman Mike Moustakas on what he referred to as a “pillow deal”. This move likely takes the Yanks out of the Moose Sweepstakes.

Drury is expected to compete for the Yanks’ starting job at second base. Highly-touted prospect Gleyber Torres is expected to also throw his hat into the conversation, though Drury will likely claim the Opening Day nod.

Over the course of three major-league seasons, Drury has proven to be a capable player both in the field and at the plate. His career slash line is .271/.319/.448 and he’s averaged 17 HR and 70 RBI. He’s not a huge strikeout-risk, going down on strikes just 103 times in 445 at-bats last season.

Drury has spent time at third base, second base, as well as playing both corner outfield positions. He seems to be most comfortable at either second or in the outfield, as his fielding percentage at those positions are .976 and .986, respectively.

He should give the Yanks another option in a few different areas that were lacking depth, if not their starting second-baseman until Torres is ready to assume the position.

Mike Puma of the New York Post writes that Howie Kendrick is viewed as a potential fit for the Mets next season.

Kendrick, despite being derailed by injuries this past season, still hit .315/.368/.475 with nine home runs and 41 RBIs that led to him having a 121 wRC+ with the Phillies and Nationals.

The 34-year old has always been a solid hitter, with a .291/.334/.421 career slash line that gives him a career 107 wRC+.

Defensively, Kendrick was once considered a strong defender at the keystone with a career-high 10 defensive runs saved in 2011 with the Angels.

However, his defense has declined over the years with a career-low of -12 defensive runs saved in 2015 with the Dodgers. Despite this, he managed to put up one defensive run saved this past season, but in a very limited same size of 15 games.

In 2017, he moved around between the keystone and the outfield, where he compiled -4 defensive runs saved.

So, while defense might not be his best feature, he is not terribly below average at the keystone to the point where the Mets would not be able to play him there.

So what would it cost to sign him?

Jon Heyman of the FanRag Sports Network projected that he would receive a two-year, $16 million contract this off-season. However, the expert Heyman co-wrote the article with projected Kendrick would only receive a one-year, $7 million contract.

In a free agent market that still has a lot of top options available in January, the second number has started to become a more realistic deal for the one-time All-Star that is past his prime.

While the Mets are still pursuing bigger options in the infield, such as Mike Moustakas, Josh Harrison, and Todd Frazier, Kendrick represents a much cheaper option that could allow for more financial flexibility in other areas of need.

Kendrick also could be an option in a bench role too, even if the Mets choose to acquire one of the three names mentioned above.

The Mets currently only have four outfielders on their 40-man roster and Michael Conforto is likely to miss the first month of the season after receiving shoulder surgery last year.

Kendrick would be able to start in right field and then shift to a super-utility role upon Conforto’s return to the lineup.

The second baseman could prove to be a solid addition to the club and could give the team more flexibility in their pursuit of other options next season.

Good morning Mets fans! Unfortunately, it appears a couple of second base options might no longer be options to appear in orange-and-blue next season.

Latest Mets News

According to Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com, the Indians will keep Jason Kipnis and stick him at second base. Kipnis was said to be a Mets target but appears the Indians have changed course. The Mets may have altered their plans too, hence the reported interest in Todd Frazier and Mike Moustakas.

Mickey Callaway is a big fan of the Mets pitchers and is very optimistic heading into 2018. Callaway also said he’s very happy with Matt Harvey‘s offseason routine.

John Harper of the Daily News examines which splash would look better, Mike Moustakas or Andrew McCutchen. I am not a huge fan of either, but I would rather have Moustakas due to the positional need and the lack of prospect cost.

Latest MLB News

The Padres and Blue Jays made a deal for Yangervis Solarte.
