The New York Yankees claimed the 34-year-old reliever off waivers from the Mets today. Tonkin started the season with the Mets, was designated for assignment, traded by the Mets to the Twins for cash, and then returned to the Mets when the Twins waived him.

In nine innings with the Mets and Twins, Tonkin is 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA. He has struck out 11 and walked four.

According to baseball-reference.com, there have been 159 players who have suited up for the Mets and Yankees.

RHP Michael Tonkin (1-2, 6.00), who started the season with the Mets, pitched for Minnesota and then returned to New York, has been designated for assignment. Lefty Josh Walker was called up from Triple-A Syracuse. Walker threw three scoreless innings in spring training. In 10 innings with the Mets last year, he had an 8.10 ERA, struck out 12 and walked six.

RHP Grant Hartwig (two earned runs in three innings) was optioned to Syracuse. RHP Sean Reid-Foley, who has yet to pitch this season, has been reinstated from the injured list. In his Mets career, Reid-Foley is 2-2 with a 4.93 ERA in 38.1 innings of work. He’ll likely be the long-relief option, his former role with the team. Reed Garrett has been used in a similar role this season but has appeared in higher leverage situations as of late the more he’s excelled, and will be called upon to do so more.

They also got the basics right and handled their business on the way to clinching their first series sweep of the year. And, just like that, the Mets have won 10 of 13 and now have four consecutive series wins.

New York will head to LA riding a four-game hot streak and, ahead of what will be a real litmus test against Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, and the Dodgers, all seems pretty damn sweet in Met Land.

And, on that note, let’s unpack everything there is to unpack from the sweep of the Pirates in the latest edition of 3 Up, 3 Down.

3 UP

PLAYING SMART

If there was one flaw that really worried you about this team, it was the lack of defense and the alarming amount of mental errors in the field. Well, there was some improvement to that end in this series. Granted, the Mets were not perfect defensively, but they got the basics right and played fundamentally sound baseball. As opposed to the Pirates, who made a slew of mental errors in addition to refusing to hustle out of the box. To that end, New York outsmarted and out-fielded Pittsburgh, and that proved to be a big difference. The Mets handled their business in the field with minimal fuss all series long. The defense also did a really good job of helping Luis Severino out of a few jams on Wednesday.

DODGING A BULLET 

If one thing can derail the red-hot Mets right now, it is injuries. Well, this team had a scare on Tuesday night when Brett Baty left the game with hamstring tightness. Given how well the third baseman has adapted to life in the majors in his second year, losing him for any amount of time would have been a major blow. Thankfully, it appears as though Baty has avoided the IL and could be back in the lineup within the next few days. That’s good news for everybody.

ROLE PLAYER SUPREME

Hands up if you expected Tyrone Taylor to be one of the Mets’ most consistent bats through the first couple weeks of the year. Anyone? No, me neither. But, here we are and Taylor is proving that he’s worthy of an everyday role on this team. Taylor went 4-for-6 in two games against the Pirates, including driving in a couple of runs in a big spot in the series finale. The veteran is now hitting .341/.378/.463/.841 with a home run, 10 RBIs, three walks, and two stolen bases through 15 games. He’s also 5-for-12 with RISP. Having also played all three outfield positions, Taylor is starting to become a very valuable piece for this Mets team. You need those kinds of highly-effective role players in order to be successful over the course of a 162-game season.

3 DOWN

ANOTHER SETBACK 

While not directly related to events in the Pirates series, the Mets did get some bad news on the injury front. It was reported on Thursday that pitching prospect Calvin Ziegler, who ranks No. 22 on the MMO list of prospects, will have to undergo Tommy John surgery. It is yet another blow for the 21-year-old, who missed nearly all of last season with elbow and quadriceps injuries. As a direct result, the Mets’ pitching depth outside of the majors also takes a major blow.

MAKES NO SENSE

It speaks to how good the Mets were in this series that I don’t actually have too many negatives to talk about. Instead, I was left rather confused by the fact that the Mets claimed RHP Michael Tonkin off waivers this week. The same Michael Tonkin they had traded to the Twins for cash a hot minute ago. Given that Tonkin had a 4.50 ERA in 3 outings for the Mets, and a 9.00 ERA in just one appearance for Minnesota, I’m not exactly sure of the merits of bringing him back into the organization. But, hey, I’ll be happy to be proved wrong on this one.

EMPTY CITI

Through 18 games, the Mets rank 18th in home attendance, averaging just 23,464. Now, it is April and the weather hasn’t exactly been great. Plus, there are probably some fans still staying away after the disappointment of last year. And that’s totally understandable. After all, this team crapped the bed in the biggest way possible and that is hard to get up from. However, with the Mets red hot right now and playing like a team that is just fun to root for, they deserve bigger crowds. Of course, it is still early and there are bigger litmus tests ahead. But, with J.D. Martinez still to come, not to mention it should only be a matter of time before Francisco Lindor‘s bat gets hot, it would be nice if there were a few more fans inside Citi Field to help support what is a really likable team.

Hey, it can still be fun to root for the underdog.

Now, the Mets are heading out west as they have to go on one of those vaunted west coast trips. After their 0-5 start it seemed as though this would be an impossible task, but after winning 10 of their last 13, the Mets will go into California with momentum.

Starting on Friday, New York will go to Dodger Stadium and face reigning MVP Shohei Ohtani and the other prize of this past offseason, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, in a three-game set. After facing the struggling Dodgers, who have lost three of their last four series, they will head up the coast to San Francisco to take on the third-place Giants. 

After bouncing back the past two weeks, even a split of these next six games would leave the Mets in a great spot for their next homestand. What’s your prediction for the Mets’ west coast trip?

Robert Stephenson will miss the season with an elbow injury, the Angels announced.

Justin Verlander will be coming off the IL and is planning to make his first start of the season for the Houston Astros on Friday against the Washington Nationals, per Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.

Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock was placed on the 15-day IL with a left oblique strain. To fill the spot, they called up LHP Joe Jacques from Triple-A Worcester.

The Colorado Rockies placed former MVP Kris Bryant on the 10-day IL (retroactive to April 14) with a low back strain. They subsequently recalled outfielder Sean Bouchard from Triple-A Albuquerque. 

The San Diego Padres placed their all-star pitcher, Yu Darvish, on the 15-day IL (retroactive to April 15) with neck tightness. They called up RHP Logan Gillaspie from Triple-A El Paso to take his spot.

The Cleveland Guardians sent cash considerations to the San Diego Padres and received RHP Pedro Avila in return. 

The Seattle Mariners reinstated INF/OF Sam Haggerty from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Tacoma.

Mike Trout tells Alden González of ESPN.com, a trade “hasn’t even crossed my mind.” González added that Trout seems hellbent on proving that he’s still elite and can bring the Angels to the playoffs.

Pirates manager Derek Shelton said that catcher Joey Bart was scratched from Wednesday’s lineup as he has not felt well after getting hit in the head with a home run in batting practice, per Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The incident happened while Bart was catching in the bullpen.

Tonkin started the season in the majors with the Mets before he was DFA’d on April 5 and then traded to the Twins for cash four days later. In his only appearance for the Twins, Tonkin allowed two runs in two innings and struck out five before they designated him for assignment.

Jay made his MLB debut last week against the Braves, giving up one run in two innings. He tossed two scoreless innings on Saturday in the Mets’ 11-7 loss to the Royals and was sent to Triple-A Syracuse the following day. The former first-round pick pitched two scoreless innings on Tuesday for Syracuse and has allowed only one earned run in 9 2/3 innings in Triple-A this year.

The Mets will have to make a move to create a spot on the active roster for Tonkin before their game on Friday against the Dodgers.

After a strong start to the season in Triple-A, the Baltimore Orioles are promoting 20-year-old Jackson Holliday to the major league squad, as first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan. 

Holliday, the first pick in the 2022 draft and MLB Pipeline’s No. 1 prospect was hitting .333 with a pair of home runs and nine RBIs in 10 games to start the season. He’s the son of former big leaguer Matt Holliday. 

The infielder is expected to join the Orioles on Wednesday in Boston. Holliday and reigning rookie of the year Gunnar Henderson have the potential to create one of the sports most dynamic middle infield duos.

For the second straight game, it was reliever Michael Tonkin (0-2, 4.50 ERA ) who was credited the loss. With one out in the top of the 11th, Colt Keith hit a double to left center that drove in Riley Greene to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead. Two batters later, a bloop single by Gio Urshela to center field extended the lead to 6-3. Tonkin allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and struck out a batter on 28 pitches (21 strikes).

New York’s offense had a chance to answer back in the bottom of the inning when Pete Alonso came up as the tying run against Shelby Miller (2-0, 0.00). However, he struck out swinging to end the game. As a team, the Mets were 2-for-17 on the afternoon with runners in scoring position and they left 14 on base. 

The Mets got on the board first in the bottom of the third as they snapped a 19-inning scoreless streak due to a two-out rally against Casey Mize. Francisco Lindor was hit by a pitch and Pete Alonso snuck a ball through the hole between first and second for a base hit. Then, Francisco Álvarez continued his hot start to the year with a two-run double down the left-field line.

Adrian Houser got the start for Game 1 and he was able to force five groundball outs in his first Mets start. He got some help from his defense in the fourth inning when Keith lined out to Lindor, who ended up doubling up Greene at second base.

New York would add another extra run for Houser in the fifth thanks to Brett Baty. The third baseman would extend the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single to left against Joey Wentz. 

Houser threw the ball well for the first five innings, but he ran into trouble in the sixth as Parker Meadows drew a leadoff walk and Spencer Torkelson singled to left. That led Carlos Mendoza to go to the bullpen and bring in Brooks Raley, who gave up a sacrifice fly to Andy Ibañez to cut the lead to 3-1. 

Overall, Houser had a strong first outing in orange and blue. He went five innings, allowed one run on three hits, walked three, and struck out three on 67 pitches (42 strikes) in a no-decision. 

The Mets bullpen was unable to hold onto the lead. Detroit cut the lead to 3-2 in the seventh thanks to a passed ball by Álvarez and a wild pitch from Jake Diekman (an unearned run charged to Drew Smith). One inning later, Greene made up for his earlier baserunning blunder with a solo home run against Adam Ottavino to tie the game at three. 

There were some positives from the bullpen. Edwin Díaz was dominant in his third outing of the year as he struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 ninth (9 of 12 pitches for strikes). In the 10th, Jorge López kept the game tied with a 1-2-3 inning of his own, stranding Detroit’s free runner on second base. 

Stat Of The Game

The Mets ended up having two stolen bases on the afternoon. Tyrone Taylor stole second in the fourth for the team’s first steal of the year. Brandon Nimmo would add a stolen base of his own in the ninth. 

Player Of The Game

Álvarez did ground into a double play to end a scoring threat in the bottom of the eighth. However, the Mets catcher continues to hit as he has recorded at least one hit in four straight games. In addition, he has a double in three straight games. 

Next Game

Game 2 will start at 4:20 P.M. as the Tigers and Mets wrap up their three-game series. Matt Manning will take the ball for the Tigers against José Buttó for the Mets. Butto was called up as the 27th man for the doubleheader.

Michael Tonkin

Tonkin started in the big leagues in 2013 and has been around the block. From the major leagues to Japan and Mexico. To two different stints on Long Island with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League. Tonkin returned to the state of New York this season by signing a one-year. $1 million deal with the Mets for a chance to earn a bullpen spot. In five games during the preseason, Tonkin would impress Mets management. He didn’t give up a single run in 7.2 innings of work and struck out 7 hitters. He had a WHIP of 1.043.

Yohan Ramírez

Like Tonkin, Ramírez has had different teams to call home. He spent 2020-2022 on the Seattle Mariners before Seattle DFA’d him during the 2022 season. He was traded to the Cleveland Guardians and then traded again to the Pittsburgh Pirates. After spending 2023 on the Chicago White Sox, Chicago traded him to the Mets. In seven games and 10.2 innings pitched this Spring, Ramírez had an ERA of 1.80, 11 strikeouts, a WHIP of 0.900, and saved two games.

Sean Reid-Foley To The IL

In addition to Tonkin and Ramírez making the roster, New York also placed reliever Sean Reid-Foley on the injured list for shoulder impingement. Foley battled discomfort in his biceps during spring training and struggled to a 4.50 ERA in five games. Over the last three years with the Mets, Foley has pitched to a 4.93 ERA, allowing 33 hits and 21 earned runs in 38.1 innings of work.

The Mets optioned Mark Vientos to Triple-A Syracuse after he hit .232/.259/.536 in 56 at-bats in Grapefruit League play. While Vientos led the club with five homers, he also struck out 19 times against just two walks. Fellow infielder Zack Short made the big league roster. A native of Kingston, NY, Short said he was informed of the decision a few hours after his grandmother passed away. Short also mentioned that he grew up a Mets fan.

Both Jiman Choi and Jose Iglesias didn’t make the team, but Choi didn’t exercise his opt-out clause and will report to Syracuse. Iglesias said he plans on following suit. Additionally, the Mets sent right-hander Austin Adams to the A’s in exchange for cash considerations.

As for the final spots on the roster, the Mets will head north with 27 men. Sean Reid-Foley, Michael Tonkin, and Yohan Ramírez are the candidates for the last two spots in the bullpen. DJ Stewart is widely expected to be the final man on the bench, but the Mets haven’t committed to that, leaving open the possibility of a roster addition. Stewart has hit just .189 with a .686 OPS this spring.

Shohei Ohtani appeared in the Dodgers’ clubhouse on Sunday and told reporters he would speak to them today for the first time since the team fired his interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Ohtani and Mizuhara are currently under MLB investigation after Mizuhara told ESPN that Ohtani helped him pay off $4.5 million in debt caused by illegal gambling. In recent days, it’s been revealed that Mizuhara never attended his supposed alma mater, UC Riverside, and never was an interpreter for the Red Sox, unlike what was presented in the Angels’ media guide in years past.

The Rockies have agreed to terms with young shortstop Ezequiel Tovar on a seven-year extension that guarantees $63.5 million and could be worth $84 million if the team exercises the club option in the deal. The 22-year-old appeared in 153 games for Colorado in 2023, batting .253/.287/.408 with 15 homers, 37 doubles, and 11 steals in 615 plate appearances. He also was strong in the field, racking up 13 DRS.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported Sunday that MLB has informed the Cubs and Dodgers that they will open the 2025 season with a series in Tokyo, Japan. The Cubs will likely begin the rest of the schedule on the West Coast.

In an interview with The Athletic, Tigers pitcher Jack Flaherty said he regretted confronting MLBPA president Tony Clark on a phone call last week. The players demanded Clark replace his second-in-command, Bruce Meyer, with former MLBPA lawyer Harry Marino. Flaherty said he enjoys working with Clark and that they have gone over what went wrong during the call.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Sunday that Ernie Clement, Daniel Vogelbach, and Davis Schneider have made the team’s Opening Day roster. Vogelbach posted an .884 OPS in 13 games this spring, while Clement had a scalding 1.027 mark.

The Phillies have extended lefty Matt Strahm on a one-year deal worth $7.5 million, with a vesting option for another $7.5 million if he pitches at least 60 innings. In addition, the Phillies traded outfielder Jake Cave to the Rockies. Colorado released Bradley Zimmer to clear room for Cave.

The White Sox have re-signed veteran outfielder Kevin Pillar. The team released Pillar on Friday, as he has just a .650 OPS this spring. To make room on the 40-man roster, Chicago designated righty Touki Toussaint for assignment.

Tonkin’s impressive performance against Houston kept his ERA at 0.00 after two shutout innings of work. Despite giving up one hit and one walk, Tonkin’s solid pitching contributed to New York’s 6-1 victory over the Astros. Of his two strikeouts, the most notable was getting Altuve swinging to kick off the bottom of the first inning. Tonkin’s ability to strike out Shay Whitcomb and force Altuve to ground out further solidified his case for the 40-man roster in the bullpen.

Tyrone Power

When the Mets acquired center fielder Tyrone Taylor in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, his defensive prowess was the primary focus. However, Taylor’s power-hitting skills have been a pleasant surprise. He has consistently hit ten or more home runs in the past three years, including a career-high 17 in 2022. This power makes him a valuable option off the bench. Against Houston, Taylor showcased his power by hitting his first home run of the Spring off pitcher J.P. France. This was his eighth hit of the spring, and he entered the game with a .333 batting average. Taylor’s two walks and a sacrifice fly, almost resulting in a second home run, demonstrated his potential impact on the team. 

Notes

With the game tied at one a-piece in the top of the fourth, Yolmer Sánchez stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a clutch bases-clearing double into the left-center field gap. Sánchez advanced to third on a throwing error, which gave New York a 4-1 lead. It was Sánchez’s second hit of the game and his second double. While Mark Vientos has displayed his power ability this Spring, the batting average leaves a lot to be desired, and Saturday could have been a better one for the Mets designated hitter. Tonkin’s scoreless Spring Training continued on Saturday as is his case to make the roster in the bullpen. After Shintaro Fujinami‘s bad outing on Friday, which continued his up-and-down Spring Training, Tonkin has stated his claim to be in the Mets bullpen. To work on his command, Fujinami might have to start the season in the minor leagues. Tonkin has allowed two walks this preseason, while Fujinami allowed three on Friday night. Fujinami has potential with his stuff, but his command leaves much to be desired. Tonkin is a veteran showing what he could do for the Mets.

It’s a split-squad Sunday for the Mets. A part of the Mets will play the Washington Nationals in West Palm Beach at 1:05 p.m. ET. Tylor Megill will take the mound for New York against Washington. Another part of the Mets will return home in Port St. Lucie to face the Miami Marlins at 1:10 p.m. ET. José Quintana is scheduled to start for the Mets. The game will be televised locally on WPIX.
