Rookie left-hander Steven Matz is progressing from a lat strain and should begin throwing off a mound next week, New York Mets manager Terry Collins told reporters on Friday.

Matz long tossed on Thursday under the watchful eye of Collins who was visiting the team’s complex in Port St. Lucie to check up on all of the injured players.

Collins said Matz was throwing “free and easy” and that his long tosses were zipped and not arcing. The Mets are eyeing an early September for Matz, Who has been on the disabled list since July 5.

Once Matz rejoins the team, the Mets are expected to return to a six-man rotation.

Meanwhile the news is not as glowing for right-hander Rafael Montero, who tossed two scoreless innings in a Gulf Coast League game on Thursday, but is not close to being ready.

“I don’t even know when he’s going to get out of there,” manager Terry Collins said, referring to the GCL. “I saw him throw yesterday and there are some things he’s got to work on.”

Montero has been out since late April with rotator cuff inflammation that has kept him out far longer than doctors expected.

“He said his arm hurts,” Collins told ESPN New York. “I don’t know if it’s mental. If your arm hurts, it hurts. But after watching yesterday, he’s not ready yet.”

The Mets face the Washington Nationals this afternoon at Space Coast Stadium in Viera at 1:05 PM. Zack Wheeler will oppose Stephen Strasburg in what should be his final appearance of the Spring. The game is not on television or radio in New York, but will be on the Nats’ MASN network.

Wheeler has had an excellent spring after arriving to camp proclaiming he would give the Mets every reason to name him the opening day starter. However, that honor will go to Dillon Gee the team announced yesterday.

“I would have liked to be considered, of course,” Wheeler said. “I don’t want them to hand anything to me, but I wanted to work for it and show them I wanted it. I’ll keep trying to show them I want it.”

The young righty has a 1.69 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in four spring starts.

Here are today’s lineups:

Mets Notes

Ike Davis is back in the lineup after a couple of days of rest. He asked out of a game over the weekend after telling Terry Collins he felt tired.

With Daniel Murphy getting the game off, Eric Young starts at second base and is in the lineup together with Juan Lagares. The latter may lose significant playing time in center field if Young is named the everyday leadoff man by Collins.

Matt Harvey will do his rehab with the team in New York when they are home and then fly to Port St. Lucie when the Mets are on the road, GM Sandy Alderson said Tuesday. Once he begins pitching off a mound, he will stay in PSL full time. “I think he’s happy with that arrangement,” said Alderson.

Daisuke Matsuzaka is expected to get word today that he has made the Opening Day roster. Noon is the deadline for the Mets to inform him he has made the club. Otherwise, the Mets would have to release him, or give him $100,000 for the right to send him to the minors. M

Sandy Alderson acknowledged that Jenrry Mejia will not pitch in relief or work out of the bullpen this season.

Jonathon Niese threw off a mound Monday for the first time since receiving a cortisone shot in his left elbow one week earlier. The southpaw felt good afterward and expects to be activated from the disabled list for an April 6 start against the Cincinnati Reds.

Enjoy today’s game and Lets Go Mets!

If everything goes well this morning, the righthander who continues to make strides in his return from Tommy John surgery, will throw a baseball again on Tuesday.

After getting off to a 0-3 start in Grapefruit League play, the Mets could use a win today if only to keep Terry Collins from sweating bullets. He sounded like he was in mid-season form after Sunday’s loss.

Matt Clark batting cleanup today… Interesting to see Lagares in the two hole…

Not exactly the Mets’ most optimal infield defense for Thor…

And I would have preferred d’Arnaud catching Syndergaard for his first spring game in a big league camp… Why not showcase the battery of the future?

Oh Terry…

Mets Notes

As the Mets enter August they look to build off the momentum from July. They finished the month 15-12 which was the third best winning percentage (.556) in the NL. They scored 128 runs, the fourth-most in the majors and their .339 on-base percentage was the fifth highest. The Mets look to continue the July momentum in August beginning with a 3-game weekend series against the Royals tonight at Citi Field.

RHP Dillon Gee, who has never faced the Royals before, will get his chance at Kansas City on Friday. Gee had gone a career-long 35 innings without allowing a home run until he gave up two in a row in his last start, a 4-1 loss to the Nationals.

LF Eric Young is batting .189 in his last ten games and .232 in his last 30 days as his numbers all continue to recede to his career norms that prompted the Colorado Rockies to DFA him and trade him to the Mets..

RHP Matt Harvey has yet to beat the Marlins in four starts. On Thursday, the All-Star struck out eight and walked none in 5 2/3 innings. But he also allowed five hits and three runs. He had allowed just one hit—a single by the opposing pitcher—and no walks through five innings. But the Marlins scored three runs off him in the sixth. The key play was Donovan Solano‘s two-run single on a nine-pitch at-bat that included six foul balls.

1B Ike Davis continues to struggle. He struck out with two runners on in the first inning and fouled out with the bases loaded in the third.

1B Lucas Duda, who is rehabbing an intercostal strain on his left side, went 0-for-4 in a high Class A game Wednesday. Duda could win the Mets’ first base job—currently a platoon with Ike Davis on the left and Josh Satin on the right side—but he has been slow to regain his form in the minors.

3B David Wright, who tweaked a hamstring while stealing second base Wednesday night, started Thursday. He went 1-for-3 with a walk.

Travis d’Arnaud caught for the Binghamton Mets and went 1-for-5 last night. He is 8-for-31 since starting his rehab assignment for the GCL Mets and two games for Double-A Binghamton.

2B Daniel Murphy did not start Thursday—it was a rest day for him, although he did strike out as a pinch-hitter. He is hitting .337 with 19 RBIs in his last 23 games. For the season, entering Thursday, he ranked sixth in the NL in hits (122) and ninth in doubles (26).

2B Justin Turner started in place of resting Daniel Murphy Thursday against the Marlins. He doubled to left in his first at-bat and finished 2-for-4 with a walk. He is batting .381 with four doubles against the Marlins this year.

LHP Jon Niese (partially torn rotator cuff) made his second minor league rehab start Thursday. He pitched four shutout innings for Class A St. Lucie, giving up two hits while striking out four and walking one.

Game Preview

The Mets return to Queens tonight and open an interleague series against Kansas City Royals. Dillon Gee will take the mound for the Amazin’s. On the season Dillon is 7-8 with a 4.13 ERA over 124.1 innings of work. Overall in the month of July, 5 starts, he posted a 2.88 ERA over 34.1 innings of work. Not really surprisingly, Dillon hasn’t faced the Royals in his career but does have some official numbers against a few Kansas City batters:

Tejada 0-1
Cain 1-3, 2B
Escobar 2-3

The Mets bats draw Wade Davis tonight who was traded along with James Shields at the beginning of the season for Wil Myers along with other players from KC. Davis is 5-9 over 20 starts with a 5.59 ERA while pitching 104.2 innings this season. He is currently coming off of his best start in July where he threw 7 innings of scoreless baseball. Overall in July he threw four games totaling 22.0 innings with a 5.32 ERA. He has only pitched 1 inning against the Mets in his career (where he didn’t allow any runs) but he has faced a few Mets on record:

Buck 3-9, HR
Omar 0-2
Byrd 0-1
Davis 0-1
Recker 0-1

Mets Notes

RHP Jeremy Hefner struggled for the third straight start. Against the Marlins Monday, he allowed just four hits but five walks in 5 1/3 innings. He also gave up five runs, but two were unearned thanks to an error by his shortstop, Omar Quintanilla. Hefner’s pitch count was high—111—for the amount of innings he pitched, another sign of his struggles.

The New York Mets will continue to accept inquiries about Marlon Byrd and Bobby Parnell in the next 24 hours or so, until the non-waiver trade deadline passes at 4 p.m. ET Wednesday. Still, a team insider reiterated Tuesday morning to ESPNNewYork.com, the deadline is expected to pass with the roster remaining intact. The Mets have not received inquiries on any players other than Byrd and Parnell, according to the source. And while a trade is not out of the question, both of those players are expected to remain unless the Mets are bowled over — or, as the source said: “Unless somebody comes out and really needs something, versus wanting something.”

RHP Zack Wheeler will start Tuesday against the Marlins. Since his big-league debut on June 18, Wheeler has allowed batters to hit just .114 with runners in scoring position. That ranks third in the majors over that span. With runners on base, Wheeler is almost as tough—a .162 average allowed, third best in the majors among pitchers who have faced at least 68 batters. This will be the first time the Marlins see Wheeler, one of the best prospects in baseball before being called up last month.

2B Daniel Murphy entered Monday ranked ninth in the NL with 26 doubles. He didn’t add to that total, but he went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. He has hit safely in 18 of his past 20 games and is hitting .356 with 16 RBIs in that span.

RHP David Aardsma pitched two-thirds of an inning Monday to get the win in relief over the Marlins. He is 2-0 with a 3.18 ERA this season. He has inherited nine runners this season, and none of them have scored.

SS Omar Quintanilla picked a terrible time to boot a ground ball. With two outs and the bases loaded in Monday’s fourth inning, Quintanilla failed to handle a soft ground ball by Marlins RHP Jacob Turner, allowing two runs to score. It was only Quintanilla’s sixth error of the season—but it was a big one.

Jon Niese, who’s been on the DL since June 21 with a partially torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder, could rejoin the Mets’ rotation in mid-August. He’ll make two more rehab starts, and if he comes through both of those healthy, he could be back on a Major League mound around the week of Aug. 11. Niese said he pitched through pain in the first couple of months of the season and it never improved, especially after pitching in cold temperatures in Denver and Minneapolis.

Game Preview

The Mets and Marlins continue their series tonight as the Mets celebrate Zack Wheeler Day. Last night the Mets were able to squeak out a win against the Marlins and finally get back in the win column after a disappointing series in Washington. Tonight the Mets will face Nathan Eovaldi, a pitcher they seemed to face every 2-4 weeks last year.

Wheeler is 4-1 with a 3.72 ERA over 38.2 innings. His last two starts haven’t been the greatest as he’s allowed 6 runs, 5 earned in 10.2 innings of work. He has not faced the Marlins in his first 7 seven major league starts of his career, so tonight will be the first of many against the fish. As such, there are no official batting stats yet for Marlins bats vs Wheeler.

Eovaldi is making his 8th start of the season. So far he is 2-1 over 40.2 innings with a 3.54 ERA. Last year he faced the Mets 4 times, which is amazing because he wasn’t a Marlin the entire year. In those four games he pitched 21.2 innings with a 3.74 ERA and a 1-2 record. The Mets have the following numbers against Nathan:

Wright 3-11
Davis 3-8, 2B, 2 HR
Murphy 4-8, 2 2B
Young 0-3

Adam Rubin tweeted that the Brandon Lyon deal with the Mets will be officially announced as soon as this afternoon.

Anthony DiComo sees the Opening Day Roster like this:

He also adds that the acquisition of outfielder Collin Cowgill could be an under-the-radar trade that could significantly impact the offense. Capable of playing any outfield position, Cowgill figures to platoon regularly with Nieuwenhuis in center, also regularly spelling Duda in left. Cowgill should start every time a left-handed pitcher takes the mound.

Also, regarding Dillon Gee, DiComo writes that while he has not pitched since undergoing emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from his right shoulder in July, he says he is fully healthy and has been throwing since before the holidays. That’s good news for a Mets team that could use his stability at the back of their rotation. Gee was enjoying a breakout season prior to his injury.

Travis d’Arnaud says is knee is perfect, according to MetsBlog, despite suffering a partially torn PCL last season. d’Arnaud was the key piece in the deal that sent R.A. Dickey to the Blue Jays and was recently rated the top catching prospect in baseball be Baseball America and Jonathon Mayo. He is expected to make his debut by May at the latest, but there’s a slim chance he could make the team with a great Spring.

Game Preview

The Mets go for the sweep tonight in Philly! In each of the last two games, the Mets have had come back victories, both with a ton of 2-run RBI’s and good relief. As we all know, those are three major pieces to winning baseball teams. Anyway the Mets will be sending out Dillon Gee tonight to make it 5 straight as the Mets take on Cliff Lee.

Dillon Gee is 2-2 on the season with a 4.50 ERA over 5 starts and 32.0 innings. He is 1-0 in his last two starts with a 3.46 ERA. It was ugly last season when Gee took on the Phillies as he allowed 15 runs, 14 earned and 17 hits over 11.1 innings of work. The Phillies have the following numbers against Gee:

Victorino 2-7, 3B
Pence 1-6
Mayberry 1-6, HR
Polanco 1-6
Ruiz 1-5, 2B

Cliff Lee is 0-1 this season over 3 games with a 1.96 ERA over 23.0 innings. This will be Cliff Lee’s first return since injury, as he is making a start for the first time since April 18th. His second start of the season was against the Mets as he allowed 4 ER over 7 innings of work, where he picked up his only loss of the season. The Mets have the following numbers against Lee:

Hairston 2-14, HR
Turner 0-8
Torres 3-6, 2B
Wright 2-7
Davis 0-6
Murphy 2-6, 2 2B

The Mets have activated OF Andres Torres from the 15-day disabled list and optioned Zach Lutz back to Triple-A Buffalo.

Lucas Duda is out of Monday’s lineup with a suspected case of the flu, the right fielder said. Mike Baxter instead is playing right field.

The Mets are 13-9 as they enter the final day of April. Last year, New York was 11-16 in the month of April. The Mets were 14-9 in April, 2010.

David Wright went 2-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and three walks yesterday. Wright has hit in six straight games, going 9-20 (.450) with six RBI. Wright is second in the majors with a .397 batting average, trailing only Matt Kemp (.425). Wright leads the majors with a .506 on-base percentage.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis tied his career-high with three hits on Sunday. It was his third three-hit game this year. Over his 16 games dating back to April 13, Nieuwenhuis is hitting .328 (21-64) with 10 runs scored, four doubles, one home run and four RBI.

Mike Baxter had a pinch-hit single yesterday and is 3-4 in his last four pinch-hitting appearances. Overall, Baxter is 5-11 (.455) with two doubles and three RBI as a pinch-hitter this year.

Game Preview

Yesterday was just a heart pounding game for the Mets. In case you missed it, the Mets were gliding through the game nicely until Todd Helton tied the game on a pinch hit grand slam, and at that point it was a back and forth battle through the 11th inning when the Mets got ahead and took the series. The Mets overall in their last series scored 21 runs over 3 games and now go to Houston for another series in a hitter’s ballpark. Tonight R.A. Dickey will take on Bud Norris and Astros.

Dickey is 3-1 0n the season with a 4.44 ERA. In his last start, he needed to rebound off of a bad start in Atlanta (4.1 IP, 8 ER) and he did just that as he allowed 1 ER over 7 innings as he picked up his third win of the year. Last season Dickey pitched 13.1 innings against Houston where he allowed 10 ER over 19 hits. The Astros have the following numbers against Dickey:

Lee 8-21, 3 2B, HR (Suffering a Sprain)
Johnson 4-14, 2B
Schaefer 3-7
Snyder 0-5

The Mets will look to continue the hit parade against Bud Norris who is 1-1 on the season over 4 games with an ERA of 5.84 over 24.2 innings. Last season Bud had two no decisions against the Mets over 13.1 innings with an ERA of 4.73. The Mets have the following numbers against Bud Norris over his career:

Wright 0-8
Thole 2-8, HR
Davis 2-8, 2B
Dickey 2-6
Hairston 1-5, HR
Murphy 2-6, HR

Here are the latest Mets Notes following the close of the 2011 Winter Meetings:

Mets Considered Trading Bobby Parnell: According to Adam Rubin of ESPN, the Mets were contemplating trading 27-year old fireballer Bobby Parnell to an unknown team for a starting position player.

Rubin said that Mets officials were “weighing the merits of the deal and there was no assurance they would pull the trigger.”

After the acquisitions of Jon Rauch, Frank Francisco and Ramon Ramirez, the Mets could move Parnell without losing too much depth in the bullpen. Though as Rubin points out, Parnell will be making near-league minimum for the next four years while Rauch and Ramirez will be free agents following 2012.

Mets Will Receive The Marlins’ Second Round Pick For Jose Reyes: According to Ken Davidoff, the Mets will get a second round draft pick for the loss of Jose Reyes to the Miami Marlins. The Padres will receive a extra pick right before the Mets second-round compensation pick. Both teams will also receive a supplemental “sandwich” pick as well.

Endy Chavez Reunion Unlikely: With the acquisition of Andres Torres, former-Met Endy Chavez is less-likely to be inked for a second tour of duty, tweets Andy Martino of the Daily News . Anthony DiComo sees the Orioles, Rangers or Mariners as more likely landing spots for Chavez.

Mets Have Interest in Pudge Rodriguez, Ryan Theriot: According to Jon Heyman, the Mets could be a possible landing spot for future hall-of-famer Pudge Rodriguez. The 14-time All-Star just completed a 2-year $6 million deal with the Nationals and say he intends to play for several more years. Rodriguez is only 156 knocks away from the 3,000 hit plateau and could bring some much-needed excitement to the 2012 New York Mets.

Also coming from Heyman, the Mets may have interest in the Cardinals Ryan Theriot. Theriot is likely to be non-tendered by the Cards and could draw a great deal of interest from teams looking for middle-infield depth.

Random Trade Rumors:

-The Mets tried to gauge to interest for Jason Bay, not surprisingly, there was none.

-The Rockies really like Mets southpaw Jon Niese, but to this point have yet to have any conversations regarding the 25-year old hurler.

-There has been interest in Mike Pelfrey; unfortunately, the offers have been “underwhelming”.

-And finally, the Amazin’s are not talking to any teams about David Wright.
