The Syracuse Mets defeated the Rochester Red Wings 8-4 behind a strong day from the offense. The Mets recorded 12 hits, including seven extra-base hits, and stole three bases. Syracuse scored in five of the nine innings, going up 4-1 early and scoring two runs in the ninth to extend their lead to 8-4.

Tylor Megill allowed all four runs in this outing, but he still impressed by going 7 2/3 innings and striking out 11 batters. The length of the outing and the number of strikeouts were season highs for Megill, who nevertheless saw his ERA rise to 3.57. Tyler Zuber and Grant Hartwig finished off the game by combining for four outs, allowing just one hit between the two relievers.

Double-A

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 7-3, led by a big day at the plate from Ryan Clifford. The top prospect went 3-for-3 with a home run and recorded another RBI hit later in the game. The Rumble Ponies went up 5-0 in the third inning and held the lead the rest of the way despite the Sea Dogs making it tight in the middle innings.

Joander Suarez got the start for Binghamton and pitched well, allowing three runs on three hits and no walks with seven strikeouts through five innings. Wilkin Ramos and Carlos Guzman were even more brilliant out of the bullpen, combining for four hitless innings with five strikeouts to ensure Binghamton held onto the lead and secured the win.

High-A

The Brooklyn Cyclones defeated the Wilmington Blue Rocks 2-1 in six innings. The game was called after a rain delay, and Brooklyn won due to the fact it was an official game. It was a low-scoring affair, with Brooklyn receiving just one RBI hit. Wilmington went up 1-0 in the fourth before Brooklyn added a run in both the fifth and sixth innings, giving them enough for the win by the time the game was called.

The Brooklyn pitching staff pitched well for six innings, with Austin Troesser allowing the only Wilmington run. Ryan Ammons and Jawilme Ramirez finished the game, with Ramirez receiving the bulk of the work. He pitched two scoreless innings and was awarded the win in the rain-shortened game.

St. Lucie Mets (39-73) 7, Daytona Tortugas (55-56) 6

The St. Lucie Mets defeated the Daytona Tortugas in comeback fashion, with the final result being a 7-6 win. Daytona scored three runs in the first and two in the second, immediately going up 5-0 before adding another run in the fifth. St. Lucie scored three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to erase Daytona’s lead and go in front by one. They held on the rest of the way to secure the victory.

It was a great day for a pair of 2024 draft picks: Eli Serrano III, who hit his first pro homer and recorded another RBI hit, and Nick Roselli, who recorded his first triple of his career. Ronald Hernandez was also great, driving in three runs himself.

It was a rough outing for starter Wellington Aracena, who walked six, allowed three hits, and saw five runs score in just two innings of work. His abbreviated outing meant four other pitchers had to combine for seven innings, and Saul Garcia (3 IP) and Layonel Ovalles (2 IP) did most of the work. Of the four relievers, just Anthony Nunez allowed an earned run, the only one through the final seven innings.

The Mets had a huge game offensively on Sunday afternoon: eight of their 13 hits went for extra bases, including four home runs, and they went an impressive 6-for-16 with runners in scoring position. Stewart reached base five times in this game and is hitting an incredible .375/.484/.958 for the month of June. He has six home runs in his last 11 games, and his 1.459 OPS over the last 15 days ranks second in the International League during that span. Cortes has also seen major improvements in his offensive performance so far in June: he is hitting .320/.419/.680 so far this month. Meyer had only the second start of his career at third base after starting one game there last season.

Valverde gave up a career-high eight runs on Sunday. His 6.17 ERA would be the worst of his career if the season ended today. After finishing May with an ERA of 9.00 over 12.0 innings and then having a two-week layoff, Orze started off June with one of his best appearances of the season. He struck out a season-high five batters and did not give up a run for the first time since May 10. Parsons has not given up an earned run or walked a batter over his first four Triple-A appearances.

Ritter and Jordan both had incredible games on Sunday afternoon, as both hit multiple home runs. It was Ritter’s third multiple-homer game in the last two weeks, and he has a 1.411 OPS over that span. For the season, he is third in the Eastern League in home runs and fourth in OPS. Jordan is hitting .310/.459/.586 so far in June.

Santos had a strong abbreviated start, needing just 37 pitches to get through three innings. After struggling with walks earlier in the season, he has walked just two batters over his last 17.0 innings pitched. Thomas was very impressive in his organizational debut, striking out three batters and allowing only one batter to reach base over two innings. Clenney has not given up a run in three straight appearances.

High-A

Brooklyn Cyclones (24-32) 5, Greenville Drive (32-25) 4

The Cyclones were held to just a single run for the first six innings of Sunday’s game and entered the seventh inning trailing 4-1. They came closer with a two-run homer by César Berbesi and eventually took the lead on Lugo’s eighth-inning home run. Parada had his second three-hit performance in his last four games. Ramírez is hitting .233/.343/.467 so far in June.

• RHP Blade Tidwell (2-3, 4.89 ERA) 4.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 10 K
• RHP Robert Colina (1-2, 4.50 ERA) 2.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB

It was a very typical start for Tidwell: he walked a batter per inning, struck out over twice that number, and got through only four innings because he threw 91 pitches. Tidwell’s 14 K/9 shows how electric he can be, but he has also walked 33 batters in 38 2/3 innings pitched, which has led to a high ERA and fewer than four innings per start. Ramos has given up just one earned run in seven innings pitched so far in June.

The Mets were held without a run for the first four innings of Sunday’s game before they scored their first run on a José Hernández groundout in the fifth inning. Lara then added another run with a home run in the sixth inning. The homer left his bat at 100.8 MPH and traveled 369 feet. After hitting just three home runs total over the last two seasons, Lara has already hit seven in just 34 games this season. Perozo is 6-for-16 with two home runs and a double over his last four games.

• LHP Felipe De La Cruz (2-4, 4.41 ERA) 1.0 IP, K
• RHP Jawilme Ramirez (L, 2-3, 4.31 ERA) 4.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 K

De La Cruz served as an opener in this game and tossed a perfect inning. He averaged 94 MPH on his fastball and had a 60% whiff rate on the pitch. Ramirez struggled mightily for a second straight start; he has a 10.80 ERA in June and has seen his ERA balloon from 2.95 to 4.31 over that span. Reid was strong in his St. Lucie debut and displayed very high spin rates on all of his pitches. His one curveball had a spin rate of 3084 RPM.

The Mets didn’t have a ton going on offense in Sunday’s game, but they got the big hit when they needed it. Plummer was the one who came through for them with his go-ahead three-run homer to right field in the eighth inning. He hasn’t played much yet this season with the time he’s spent on the major league taxi squad, but Plummer has looked very strong through his first six games with Syracuse. Used at all three outfield positions a year ago, it is interesting to note that he has only played center field this season.

Vientos had a .978 OPS during his cup of coffee with Syracuse last year, so it is a bit of a surprise to see him struggle so mightily through the first couple of weeks of 2022. Four of his eight hits have gone for extra bases, so the power is still there, but his 34% K% is very high. The other top-hitting prospects in Syracuse – Khalil Lee and Carlos Cortes – have experienced similar struggles this season.

• LHP Mike Montgomery (0-2, 2.65 ERA) 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, ER, 4 K
• RHP Rob Zastryzny (0-1, 2.45 ERA) 2.0 IP, BB, 4 K

Syracuse has had significant pitching woes early in the 2022 season, but these three pitchers have not been responsible for those struggles. Montgomery has been consistently good through his first four starts, giving up no more than two earned runs in any single start. His 16:1 K: BB ratio over 17.0 innings pitched is also outstanding. Claudio has only given up one earned run over his first eight innings this season.

Double-A Recap

It’s a rare sight to look at a Binghamton box score and see that both Baty and Álvarez were hitless, but Sunday was one of those unusual days. Mauricio, however, picked up the slack for his fellow top prospects with a multi-hit game of his own. Through the first 14 games of the season, the three top prospects are among the top 13 hitters in the Eastern League in terms of OPS. MMO’s Josh Finkelstein noted Ronny Mauricio’s debut on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects list.

It almost seems hypercritical to say anything negative about a player with an OPS over 1.000 and the youngest player in the league. Still, Álvarez has been uncharacteristically strikeout-prone over the past few games. He has a 31.1 K% for the season, well above his 22.3% from last year. Both Àlvarez and Mauricio were removed for pinch hitters in the eighth inning; the Rumble Ponies gave no reason for their removal, but it does not appear injury-related.

It was a start to forget for Ragan, against whom more at bats ended in home runs (3) than outs (2). He hadn’t been dominant early in the season, but this start ballooned his ERA from a sour 5.87 to an abysmal 12.96. Lasko wasn’t much better in relief (although he did make it from the second through the fourth inning unscathed), and the score was out of hand by the fifth inning. However, one positive from this pitching performance is that Otanez continues to look strong and displays much better control in relief than last year. It has only been five appearances, but a 1.93 BB/9 was a dramatic improvement from his 9.15 BB/9 a year ago.

High-A Recap

Hudson Valley Renegades (8-7) 3, Brooklyn Cyclones (8-7) 0  Box Score

There was nothing positive about the Cyclones’ offensive performance on Sunday. They recorded just two hits on the day and were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. Palmer improved his strikeout numbers a bit last season, especially during his time with St. Lucie, but a 48.6% K% through his first ten games is certainly not conducive to success for the high-upside prospect. However, offensive struggles early this season are not limited to just Palmer. Instead, the Cyclones rank dead last in the South Atlantic League with a .580 team OPS.

• RHP Daison Acosta (L, 0-2, 12.00 ERA) 1.0 IP, H, ER, BB, K
• RHP Garrison Bryant (1-0, 2.79 ERA) 4.0 IP, 4 H, ER, BB, 3 K

Acosta lasted just one inning in his third start of the season. He is coming back from Tommy John surgery and threw 56 pitches in his last outing, so seeing him leaving this start after throwing just 16 pitches is a bit concerning. Following Acosta’s outing, Bryant pitched well in relief. Courtney has looked excellent in his first full season in the Mets organization. He has given up just two earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched and has a 13.5 K/9.

Low-A Recap

Jupiter Hammerheads (8-7) 2, St. Lucie Mets (9-6) 1  Box Score

The Mets couldn’t get anything going offensively in Sunday’s game. They had just seven hits and couldn’t take advantage of their limited chances, with Newton’s RBI double in the eighth inning being their lone hit with runners in scoring position out of seven at bats. Consuegra is one of the more exciting prospects on this St. Lucie team, but he has struggled a bit with strikeouts: he has recorded a 35.1% K% through the first 13 games of the season. Alex Ramirez was not in the lineup for Sunday’s game.

• RHP Dominic Hamel (0-0, 4.66 ERA) 1.0 IP, H, 2 K
• RHP Carson Seymour (1-0, 0.00 ERA) 4.0 IP, 3 H, BB, 2 K

Hamel made his third start of the season but was removed after one scoreless, 14-pitch inning. It is unclear if this was because he was being used as an opener for Seymour or if the removal was injury-related. He had gone at least four innings in his first two starts of the season. Seymour has thrown nine scoreless innings and has held opponents to a .335 OPS this season.

• Matt den Dekker was 3 for 4, with two runs scored and two doubles. He has seven multi-hit games in his last ten games.
• Brandon Nimmo now has a five game hitting streak with a 1 for 3 game on Tuesday, he also walked twice and now has 23 walks in 36 Double A games.
• Dilson Herrera went 1 for 3 and hit his sixth home run on the season for Binghamton. He also hit sac fl in bottom of ninth to drive in the winning run.
• T.J. Rivera continues his hot hitting as he singled on Tuesday to extend his current hit streak to seven games.
• Robert Whalen tossed seven innings, allowing two runs (no earned runs) on two hits, walking two and striking out seven. Since coming off the DL, Whalen is 2-0, and for the season he is 6-0, with a 1.65 ERA.
• Yexion Ruiz was 3 for 5 in Savannah’s win and hits his third home run on the season.
• Amed Rosario was 0 for 4 and 11 game hitting streak was stopped.
• Michael Conforto had his ten game hit streak snapped with an 0 for 3 night.
• Eudor Garcia, the Mets 4th round pick in this years draft, went 2 for 3, with a double and two RBI’s in Kingsport’s victory. In his last ten games, Garcia is batting .351 (13 for 37).
• After coming out of the bullpen for his first five appearances to start the season, Martires Arias (4-0, 0.50), won his third start in a row, by tossing five shutout innings on three hits, walking five and striking out five.

• Las Vegas put up five runs in the first three innings and withstand late surge to defeat Salt lake, 5-3.
• Binghamton give up three first inning runs to New Hampshire and eventually lose, 5-1.
• St. Lucie scored two in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and one in the 12th to steal a victory from Dunedin, 7-6.
• Savannah managed only two hits and lose Game 1 to Lexington, 7-0. In Game 2, Sand Gnats end four game losing streak and defeat Lexington 7-2.
• Brooklyn added six runs in the sixth and defeat Lowel, 8-5.

• In his first at bat since missing time due to a mild case of vertigo, Kevin Plawecki singled and finished game 2 for 4.
• John Lannan, in his first start for Vegas, threw six shutout innings, allowing six hits, with a walk and strikeout, to earn the victory.
• Josh Satin hit his sixth home run for Vegas and finished 2 for 3 with two RBI’s.
• Matt Reynolds went 3 for 5 with a triple and RBI and is batting .305 in Triple A.
• Steven Matz (4-2, 3.27) drops only second game as a B-Met by tossing five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits, with a walk and four strike outs.
• Brandon Nimmo singled and has hit safely in four straight games and has upped his batting average to .214 in Double A.
• T.J. Rivera singles to extend his current hit streak to six games.  He has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games batting .368 (14 for 38) in that span.
• Jayce Boyd finished 2 for 4, and has hit safely eight of his last ten games with Bingo.
• Wilfredo Tovar finished 3 for 4, with a double, triple, two walks and two RBI’s including the tying run in the bottom of the ninth on a single.

• Akeel Morris tosses one inning, striking out the side and lowered his ERA to 0.78 in Savannah’s Game 2 victory.
• With two more hits on Monday, Amed Rosario has an 11 game hitting streak, with six multi-hit games in that span.
• Red Hot Michael Conforto has proven that he can handle NY Penn League pitching and now he should be promoted. With a single in Monday’s Cyclone victory, Conforto has hit safely in his first ten games in pro ball. During the streak he is batting .394.
• Left handed relief pitcher, Shane Bay, a Tulsa, OK native, has saved eight games in 11 chances for Brooklyn.

• Noah Syndergaard tossed five innings, allowing two runs (1 earned) on five hits, walking two and struck out eight. Even though Thor threw a dominating game, he did not earn the victory. Miguel Socolovich gave up three runs (2 earned) in the top of the 7th inning, to temporarily put the Bees in the lead.
• Matt Reynolds launched a three-run shot over the left field fence in the 7th inning to put the 51s in the lead for good. Reynolds hit his first Triple A home run on Saturday, making it two straight days.
• T.J. Rivera singled on Sunday to extend his current hit streak to five games.  In his last ten games, Rivera is batting .395 (15 for 38), with two doubles and seven RBI’s.
• Rainy Lara (5-4, 4.98) gave up seven runs on 11 hits, giving up two home runs and only struck out one batter.  Lara has not won a decision since June 30, which dates back five starts including Sunday’s loss. In his last ten starts, he is 3-3, with a 5.68 ERA.
• Jeremy Hefner pitches three innings, allowing three runs on three hits, walking four and striking out four. This was Hefner’s first start with St. Lucie on his comeback trail from Tommy John surgery. He pitched in three games with the Gulf Coast Mets prior to Sunday’s start.
• Wilfredo Tovar started for St. Lucie in the doubleheader, is first two games with St. Lucie since coming off the DL, and a combined 1 for 7, with an RBI.
•  Dario Alvarez suffered his first blown save and loss on the same night as he gave up three earned runs in the eighth inning.
• Michael Conforto goes 2 for 4 to extend his current hit streak to nine games. What a start to his pro career, as he has at least one hit in each of his first nine games.
• Amed Rosario went 2 for 6 and extended his current hitting streak to ten games. He is batting .383, (18 for 47), with 10 runs scored and eight RBI’s in that span.
• Cyclone outfielder Michael Bernal went 4 for 4 with Four RBI’s in the victory.
• Wuilmer Becerra finished 2 for 5, and has three straight multi-hit games. In his last ten games, Becerra is batting .366 (14 for 41), with two home runs.

Prospect Injury Update

• Kevin Plawecki still has not returned to the 51s and hasn’t played since July 17th. Plawecki has been sidelined with a mild case of vertigo. According to Robert Brender, he caught in the bullpen yesterday for the 51s, a sign that he could be close to returning.

• Akeel Morris earned is tenth save in Savannah’s victory. In 30 relief appearances, he is 4-0, a 0.80 ERA, and 69 strikeouts in 45 innings.

• Matt den Dekker was 2 for 3, with a run scored and a double in Wednesday’s Vegas loss. In his last four games, he is batting .600 (9 for 15), three doubles, a triple, home run and five RBI’s.
• Wilmer Flores and Allan Dykstra both launched their 13th home run on the season for Vegas.
• Second baseman Daniel Muno has not drawn much fan fare but in Vegas he is batting .270/.386/.442, with 11 home runs and 44 RBI’s in 267 at bats.
• Steven Matz earned his fourth victory for the B-Mets tossing seven innings, and allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out four batters. He has won his last three decisions.
• T.J. Rivera just keeps hitting and now in Double A. Rivera is batting .329/.386/.421 and has hit safely in eight of his last ten games.
• After tearing through Class A Advanced, Brandon Nimmo is struggling to get on track in Double A, batting just .189/.318/.360, but continues with his power surge, launching five home runs with Binghamton on the season.
• Pitcher Robert Whalen returned to the mound for the first time since May 1st for the Sand Gnats. He was initially placed on the disabled list due to an infection in his pitching hand which required surgery. Whalen (5-0, 2.10) did not miss a beat as he earned the victory tossing 5.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits and striking out three batters.
• Savannah DH/1B Matthew Oberste extended his hitting streak to 21 games with a home run on Wednesday night and is batting .446 (37 for 83), with seven home runs and 25 RBI’s in that span.
• Michael Conforto was 2 for 4, with a double for Brooklyn and has hit safely in the first five games of his pro career.
• Amed Rosario went 3 for 4, with a run scored and a triple and has an eight game hitting streak with the Cyclones.
• Outfielder Wuilmer Becerra was 2 for 4, with two doubles in Kingsport’s loss and has hit safely in eight straight games. He is batting .531 with eight runs scored, four doubles, four home runs, and seven RBI’s during the streak.

Prospect Spotlight

Dilson Herrera will be the next top prospect to shine on the big club, and it will probably be sooner than most anticipate, especially with how he has been tearing through Class A and Double A, just this season alone. After his first week in Binghamton, Herrera went on a tear and hit in 11-straight games. He was hitless for just one game and took off again and after going 2 for 5 on Wednesday, he is currently enjoying another 11-game hit streak. In 67 games with St. Lucie, the Colombian native batted .307/.355/.410 with 16 doubles, three home runs, and 23 RBI’s in 283 at bats. So far with Binghamton, he has appeared in 29 games and is batting .359/.421/.581, with 10 doubles, four home runs and 26 RBI’s in 117 at bats.
