The irresponsibility came at the worst time.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the second inning, James Wood drove an 85 mph Nolan McLean sweeper 379 feet to the left-field wall. Nick Morabito, making his MLB debut 2.5 miles away from his high school, raced to the fence and nearly pulled off a one-handed, leaping catch. The ball hit his glove, but he couldn’t hold on and it caromed away while Taylor stood still and Wood circled the bases.

“He lost track of the baseball,” Carlos Mendoza told reporters after the 9-6 loss to the Nationals. “He went after and then he didn’t know where the ball was. That’s a tough break there.” By the time Morabito got to the ball and threw it in, there was no chance to get Wood at the plate. The inside-the-park grand slam pulled the Nats to within 5-4.

With first and third in the third, Torrens allowed a passed ball that gave the Nats a 6-5 lead and put in a runner in scoring position. That runner came home later in the inning on a sacrifice fly.

Then came the fourth, which Mendoza charitably described as “not good” after the game.

Semien’s first error of the season put runners on second and third. With the infield in, CJ Abrams grounded to short, Bichette threw home and the ball hit Torrens in the glove, but he didn’t squeeze it and two runs scored to make it 9-5 Nats.

“The past four days or so, making errors on routine plays,” Mendoza said. “We’re a good team defensively, and we’ve shown that … but we’re going through a stretch right now where we got to clean that up.”

The Mets (21-27) rank 23rd in outs above average, (negative-8) which measures range, 22nd in fielding run value (negative-6), which includes throwing, blocking, framing, arm and range, and 23rd in an overall defense (negative-4.9), per FanGraphs. New York has committed 26 errors, which is tied for the ninth most in the league with the Rockies.

He also confirmed there is no timetable on Jorge Polanco‘s return. Polanco is having, “good days and bad days.”

Prior to the game, manager Carlos Mendoza also said RHP Kodai Senga will throw a bullpen Sunday. Minter threw a bullpen Saturday. He recently had his “rehab clock” restarted due to hip soreness.

Three Things To Watch For

Huascar Brazobán. Brazobán pitched a scoreless first inning against the Colorado Rockies a few days ago opening up a game where David Peterson got the bulk of the work. Hitters are just not making solid contact right now against Brazobán who is in the 97th percentile for average exit velocity (84.8 mph). Hitters are barreling the ball only 2.0% of the time (95th percentile), getting a hard-hit 26.5% (96th percentile), and grounding out 55.1% (90th percentile).

Offense. The 2026 Mets have scored 138 runs this season, good for 29th in the major leagues. Their pitching is tied for the ninth-fewest runs allowed, at 165. The Mets don’t need a crazy bump in offense to turn things around, but they need something, anything, to give them a spark.

Luis Torrens. Torrens may be the secret to David Peterson. In 26 2/3 innings throwing to Alvarez this season, Peterson has a 7.42 ERA. In 7 2/3 innings throwing to Torrens, Peterson has a 2.35 ERA. The numbers weren’t as stark last year, but the trend was there as well. Peterson had a 4.95 ERA with Alvarez catching compared to a 3.52 ERA with Torrens. Torrens has continued to excel at catching base runners, throwing out three already, putting him in the 98th percentile.

Torrens has been among the best in the league at catching baserunners, placing 94th percentile in 2024, 100th percentile in 2025, and is currently in the 100th percentile in 2026. He has also placed in the top 20% in framing, though he has typically rated as a below-average blocker.

Offensively as a Met, Torrens has slashed .225/.281/.347/.628, which is good for a 78 WRC+. Among catchers since the start of 2024, he ranks 39/52 in WRC+.

There are some concerns with locking up a defensive first catcher into their 30s. Torrens framing has declined over the last two years, and pop time typically starts to decline in a catcher’s early 30s. Torrens has also struggled offensively both results-wise and under the hood in 2026. He is chasing almost twice as much as he did in 2025 and is not hitting the ball hard. He has yet to barrel up a ball once. A two-year contract also likely comes with some level of promised playing time making it harder to cut him if he were to struggle.

The Mets must see something they like in Torrens, whether on or off the field to extend this contract. Torrens will be with the club through 2028 and gets to boast that he has one of the 80 largest catcher contracts in the history of the sport.

Everything appeared to click for the New York Mets on the West Coast.

After a disappointing start to the road trip, the Mets took three out of four from the Giants in San Francisco. All in all, they finished their first road trip of the year 4-3.

Furthermore, several encouraging trends emerged from the series against the Giants. The pitching continued to look strong, while the offense showed tangible signs of a breakout. And the depth really came through, too.

Through the first 10 games of the season, the Mets have scored 49 runs, fifth in MLB, while allowing just 32 runs, which ranks fourth best in the majors. While the sample size is small, those numbers do suggest that this Mets team is trending in the right direction.

So, on that note, let’s recap the four games in the latest edition of 3 Up, 3 Down …

ANSWERING THE DOUBTS

Mark Vientos has had to deal with a lot of noise about his role on this team. Of course, a lot of that was of his own making. A tough 2025 season was followed by an ugly spring training. However, the infielder has started to answer some of those doubts early on in 2026. He has looked like a different hitter to start the year, and he was hugely productive in San Francisco. Vientos went a combined 8-for-16 with four RBIs and five runs scored in the four games against the Giants. He has embraced the challenge and has proved hard to drop from the lineup. He was a real spark throughout the series against San Fran, producing several key moments. Long may it continue.

BREAKING OUT

The offense went stagnant following a breakout on Opening Day. Well, we saw some real, tangible signs of life from the lineup in San Francisco. Aside from the opening game on Thursday, the offense exploded, giving the pitching the kind of run support it deserves. In all, the Mets outscored the Giants 26-12. More importantly, we saw some really encouraging individual performances. Bo Bichette had six hits and came through with runners in scoring position. Marcus Semien had his best series as a Met, including three hits and three RBIs on Friday. Francisco Alvarez hit a pair of home runs in the second game of the series and had at least a hit in the three games he played in. Luis Robert Jr. stayed hot and stole his first two bases of the season on Sunday. And Tyrone Taylor, Luis Torrens, and Jared Young all came up with big-time offensive contributions.

In the wake of the series against the Giants, the Mets rank high in a number of key offensive categories across Major League Baseball. But, more importantly, several key hitters began to show signs of breaking out over the weekend, notably Bichette and Semien. Let’s hope the entire lineup can now use these last four games as a launching pad for greater things.

PITCHING EXCELLENCE

The Mets continue to receive stellar performances from both the starting rotation and the bullpen. Nolan McLean didn’t have his best stuff, but still took a perfect game into the sixth inning on Friday. Clay Holmes delivered seven shutdown innings on Saturday, again showcasing just how big a piece he could be this year. And Kodai Senga was superb again on Sunday, striking out seven and allowing just two hits over 5.2 innings. All in all, Mets starters own a 3.13 ERA through the first 10 games of the season. As for the bullpen, Huascar Brazobán, Luke Weaver, and Devin Williams all remained lights out, as did Tobias Myers and Brooks Raley.
3 DOWN

SCARY MOMENT

It appears as though a true crisis has been averted with Juan Soto. However, it was still heart-in-your-mouth time when the superstar exited Friday’s game with a calf strain. Now, Soto was placed on the 10-Day IL with a right calf strain on Monday. The organization announced that a typical return to play is approximately 2-3 weeks. That’s probably the best-case scenario, but still, being without your best hitter for any amount of time is hardly good news. However, it is probably wise for the Mets to be extra cautious with this type of injury, especially with a star player.

BRUTAL OUTING

David Peterson‘s start on Thursday was tough to watch. The southpaw was just brutal, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks across 4.1 innings. To compound an already bad night, Peterson dropped the ball at first base to allow a run to score in the first inning. That set the tone for the rest of the night. Again, it is early, but Peterson’s start to the season has featured many of the same problems that plagued him during the second half of last year. Poor location and poor pitch execution won’t lead to anything good in the major leagues.

OFFENSIVE FUNK

Welcome back to our regular scheduled programming. Francisco Lindor is off to a traditional slow start. Yes, he leads the National League in walks with 10. But, on the flip side, he is hitting just .135/.333/.243/.577 with two extra-base hits over the first 10 games of the season. Lindor didn’t have much success against the Giants, going a combined 2-for-16 with five strikeouts over the four games, including consecutive 0-for-5 outings. Perhaps more worrying is the fact that the shortstop has a 34.5 percent hard hit percentage, while he’s been hitting the ball on the ground more often than not (48.3%). That plays into the notion that hamate surgery tends to sap a hitter’s power. With that said, Lindor tends to start slow before hitting at a high level. Time will tell if the lack of power and the slow start is just par for the course, or if there’s something bigger to be concerned about.

Good morning, Mets fans! Let’s not leave the bats in San Francisco.

Luis Torrens‘ go-ahead, two-run double keyed a four-run eighth inning on Sunday and the Mets (6-4) won 5-2 to take three out of four from the Giants. He was pinch-hitting for Jared Young, who went 3-for-3 and threw out a runner at second on a ball hit off the left-field wall. Young, who was making his second career start in left, also made a neat sliding catch.

Kodai Senga struck out seven and gave up two runs over 5 2/3 innings. Huascar Brazobán, Luke Weaver and Devin Williams didn’t allow a run from there. The three have yet to give up a run this season over 13 1/3 combined innings.

The Mets went 6-for-15 with runners in scoring position. They are 17-for-40 (.425 batting average) with RISP during the three-game winning streak.

After defeating the San Francisco Giants the Saturday night, the New York Mets aimed to secure a four-game series win at Oracle Park and build momentum heading back to Citi Field. Initially, it seemed that the offense had fallen back into a slump, but a four-run eighth inning ignited a rally, and the Mets emerged victorious in the series finale, winning 5-2. They took three out of four, and improving to 6-4 on the season.

Before the game, Brett Baty was removed from the starting lineup due to a jammed thumb sustained during the previous night’s game, leaving the Mets’ bench short-handed, especially with Juan Soto still day-to-day.

Kodai Senga took the mound for the Mets in his second start of the season and delivered a solid performance, pitching 5 2/3 innings. He allowed five hits, two runs, one walk, and recorded seven strikeouts.

His only setback came in the sixth inning when he surrendered two two-out RBI hits to Matt Chapman and Rafael Devers, which resulted in the Mets trailing at the end of his outing. During Senga’s outing, Jared Young made a superb defensive play by throwing out Jerar Encarnacion at second base in the fifth inning, delivering a strong throw after fielding the ball off the wall following Encarnacion’s single.

Relievers Huascar Brazobán, Luke Weaver, and Devin Williams effectively held the Giants’ offense scoreless for the remainder of the game. Luis Torrens contributed by throwing out Matt Chapman at second base in the ninth inning.

A noteworthy moment during Brazoban’s inning occurred when Giants designated hitter Jerar Encarnacion hit a slow ground ball back to the pitcher, which was mishandled by Mark Vientos at first base. Encarnacion was immediately called out for interference, as it was ruled that he obstructed the fielder’s ability to make the play. Giants manager Tony Vitello argued the call and was subsequently ejected from the game.

Throughout the afternoon, the Mets’ offense struggled to generate runs, with Mark Vientos being the exception. He gave the Mets their first run with an RBI single in the top of the second inning. However, the eighth inning saw the Mets turn the game around with a major offensive surge. The rally began when Jorge Polanco doubled and was replaced by pinch-runner Tyrone Taylor, who advanced to third on a single by Luis Robert Jr., who then stole second base.

After a pitching change by San Francisco, Luis Torrens delivered a clutch pinch-hit double that scored both Taylor and Robert Jr., giving the Mets the lead. Mark Vientos added to the score with an RBI single, benefiting from a throwing error by Matt Chapman. Marcus Semien concluded the rally with a run-scoring double, allowing New York to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 advantage.

Overall, the Mets went 5-for-14 with runners in scoring position, left nine runners stranded on base, and finished the game with 13 hits.

Sunday night, Rawlings announced the 2025 Gold Glove winners. The New York Mets had two finalists, those being catcher Luis Torrens and starting pitcher David Peterson. Each were named a finalist on October 15.

At catcher, San Francisco Giants backstop Patrick Bailey got the nod. It was well deserved as Bailey turned in a sensational season behind the plate. He ranked in the 100th percentile in framing, had a plus-19 defensive runs saved, and a plus-30 fielding run value. Joining Torrens was Chicago’s Carson Kelly as the other finalist.

Like Torrens, Peterson also lost out to a San Francisco Giant in Logan Webb. Webb had a plus-seven defensive runs saved. For whatever it was worth, Peterson was at a plus-six. The other finalist was another Cub, Matthew Boyd.

This marks another season in which no Mets were awarded a Gold Glove. The last Met to win one was Juan Lagares in 2014.

2025 Review

Going into the 2025 season, Luis Torrens entered as the primary backup to the young Francisco Alvarez, who was looking to rebound after a challenging 2024 campaign. However, Alvarez dealt with stretches of both inconsistency and injury, which led to a much larger role for Torrens. He ended up appearing in 93 games and logging 283 plate appearances—his heaviest workload since his age-25 season with the Mariners in 2021.

Torrens did enjoy a promising start at the plate, particularly stepping into a larger role when Alvarez was dealing with injuries early in the season. During this initial stretch, he proved to be a competent bat, hitting .272/.362/.424 through the end of May. This early showing suggested he could be more than capable offensively, for a backup catcher.

However, after that strong initial period, his offensive production saw a noticeable drop-off for the remainder of the campaign. From June onward, Torrens’ slash line dipped significantly, sitting at just .201/.237/.302 for the rest of the season. This decline in hitting efficiency proved that while he could potentially hold his own, his bat was not the game-changing component of his profile. He ultimately reverted to expected levels for a defense-first backup.

In stark contrast to his sporadic offensive contributions, Torrens’ defense was consistently excellent and arguably ranked among the league’s best. He was a constant threat to the opponent’s running game and consistently earned high marks for his overall work behind the plate. Torrens was recently named a Rawlings Gold Glove Award finalist.

The most impressive aspect of his defense was his ability to control the running game. Torrens led Major League Baseball with the highest caught stealing percentage for a catcher. He successfully gunned down 20 of the 49 would-be base stealers who tested his arm, a remarkable rate of 41%. This elite level of performance essentially neutralized a major component of opposing offenses.

Torrens’s glove work during the 2025 season was brilliant beyond the traditional statistics. He posted a Fielding Run Value (FRV) of 10 and 11 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS). His FRV placed him sixth among all catchers in the majors, while his DRS was even better, ranking him third in the majors. Overall, his exceptional caught-stealing rate put him in the 100th percentile, and his pop time was measured to be in the 97th percentile. He also contributed four runs in framing value, which was good for the 82nd percentile.

2026 Preview

Torrens is projected to return to his role as the backup catcher in 2026. He’ll serve as a capable understudy to the Mets’ budding star in Alvarez. Torrens has solidified his place on the Mets roster primarily due to his brilliant defense, which the team should view as an indispensable asset. He’ll give the Mets a trusted defensive option behind the dish when Alvarez needs rest or deals with the wear and tear of a 162-game season—an important factor given Alvarez’s recent injury history.

In essence, Torrens will handle one of the more vital backup roles on the roster, with stability being his primary responsibility. If he continues to post strong defensive metrics, as he did in 2025, he’ll play a key role in the Mets’ success by protecting Alvarez and allowing him the recovery time needed to stay healthy and productive over the full 2026 campaign.

Torrens, 29, has taken his fair share of hits behind the plate this season. However, he was hit on the arm a couple of days ago, and per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the team played shorthanded on Sunday in Cincinnati’s finale.

Laura Albanese of Newsday commented that Torrens hurt himself on a play blocking the ball. The catcher believes it will be a minimum stay on the IL rather than a longer stay.

In his second year with the Mets, Torrens has seen substantial playing time with Francisco Alvarez‘s multiple injuries. However, Torrens was on a bit of a scorcher the past week. In his last seven games, the catcher hit .316/.350/.654 (1.004 OPS) with two home runs, eight RBIs and five runs scored.

He’ll sorely be missed most behind the plate. According to Baseball Savant, Torrens ranks first in caught stealing percentage (45%) and catcher’s caught stealing above average (11). The next player is Boston’s Carlos Narváez (nine) and San Francisco’s Patrick Bailey (seven).

Carlos Mendoza noted before Sunday’s game that Francisco Alvarez, still nursing two hand injuries, would get a bulk of the catching time between him and Torrens. With Torrens now out of the equation, it’ll be interesting to see how the Mets continue to use Alvarez and Senger.
