There were a lot of positives on display as the Mets took two out of three from the Padres. And, in winning the series in San Diego, New York finished their final West Coast road trip with a 3-3 record.

The Mets have also won seven of their last 10 games. Furthermore, they are 19-15 since May 1. That’s obviously a big improvement and a sign that this team is now trending in the right direction.

Of course, it wasn’t all perfect over the weekend. There were mistakes, another quiet day by the offense, and a not-so-great injury update on Jorge Polanco. All in all, the Mets did what they had to do to take care of business.

On that note, let’s unpack all the good and the bad from the Padres series in another edition of 3 Up, 3 Down …

Jun 7, 2026; San Diego, California, USA; New York Mets right fielder Carson Benge (3) celebrates after hitting a one run home run during the sixth inning against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.
3 UP

FUTURE HOPE

We got a glimpse of both the short and long-term future for the Mets this weekend. Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing played huge roles in the series win. As such, they offered tantalizing hope that maybe this season could be salvaged after all. And, if not, then the long-term future at least looks incredibly bright with those two leading the charge. Benge was the headline act, going 5-for-5 on Sunday, becoming the first rookie since Pete Alonso in 2019 to record five hits in a single game. Benge finished Sunday with a triple, a home run, two RBIs, three runs scored, and ten total bases. It was a statement performance by the rookie, who continues to emerge as a real All-Star contender.

As for Ewing, the outfielder had a hit in all three games. He also walked twice in the second game of the series, including a masterclass of an at-bat against Padres phenom Mason Miller in the ninth inning. Ewing also made another stellar defensive play in the series. Overall, both the immediate outlook and the bigger picture look bright for the Mets thanks to their two dynamic rookies.

GUTTING IT OUT

Nolan McLean has had a rough time of it as of late, but he showed signs of getting the train back on the tracks in San Diego. The righty walked three, but allowed just one run over six innings during Saturday’s loss. It was the first time McLean had pitched into the sixth inning since May 14. Granted, it wasn’t the prettiest of outings – McLean threw 101 pitches – but he strapped on his big boy pants to work through the traffic and limit the damage. That’s a good sign. The hope will be now that McLean can return to his dominant self on the mound.

FINDING A GROOVE

Both Marcus Semien and Bo Bichette continue to trend upwards. Semien stayed hot in San Diego, recording four hits in the final two games of the series. That included homers on back-to-back days. Semien also drove in both of the Mets’ runs on Saturday night. However, at this point, it is fair to wonder if the veteran is just going to be a streaky player. As for Bichette, his offensive ceiling is a lot higher, and he showed what he’s capable of against the Padres. He recorded an RBI triple on Friday night, before finishing with two hits on Sunday. After recording five hits total in the series, Bichette is hitting .375/.385/.542/.926 over his last six games. Now he needs to put it all together on a consistent basis.

3 DOWN

BASERUNNING GAFFE

It didn’t get talked about because the Mets won, but Juan Soto had a moment to forget on Friday night. During the third inning, with two outs and a runner on third, Soto hit a grounder and seemed to give up on the play immediately. He casually strolled out of the box before breaking into a run when it was already too late. The lack of hustle cost the Mets a run, while it didn’t ultimately matter, it was still an incredibly bad look on Soto’s part. And it isn’t the first time it has happened, either.

GROWING PROBLEM

How do you solve a problem like Mark Vientos? Yikes. There doesn’t appear to be an easy answer. The infielder will show brief glimpses of his potential, only to then go ice-cold for long periods. He is a net negative way too often. Just look at the series in San Diego. Vientos went 0-for-4 on Saturday, including striking out on three pitches to end the game. His at-bat against Mason Miller was just lifeless. He has now struck out in six of his last 10 plate appearances. Maybe it is time to concede that the 2024 season was the exception rather than the rule.

CLUNKER

Austin Warren has been a revelation for the Mets so far in 2026. Sadly, that wasn’t the case on Saturday night. Warren gave up the go-ahead two-run shot that sealed the loss. If that wasn’t enough, he misplayed a routine chopper just before allowing the fatal shot. In what was a one-run ballgame, Warren’s bad night proved costly. It cost the Mets a chance to sweep, which could come back to haunt them, given the hole they’ve dug for themselves.

If the New York Mets win Sunday, they will have a .500 road trip where they played a surging Seattle Mariners team and sinking San Diego Padres team. The Mets had a shot to win the series Saturday, but the Mets’ bats couldn’t get much going against the Padres who slipped by New York with a 3-2 victory. Sunday, the Mets are back on their opener-bulk set up with Huascar Brazobán starting the game.

Starting Pitcher: Huascar Brazobán

Huascar Brazobán worked the Mets out of a jam Friday night, recording 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. The Mariners hit him around the last time he opened a game, allowing two runs from three hits and a walk over 1 2/3 innings. Overall, this season, Brazobán has pitched 32 innings over 27 games with a 2.25 ERA, 3.60 FIP, 1.000 WHIP, and a 182 ERA+.

The Padres have the following career stats against him:

Randy Vásquez has made 12 starts this season totaling 65 1/3 innings with a 3.31 ERA, 4.33 FIP, 1.224 WHIP, and a 123 ERA+. Vásquez ended May with a rough stretch allowing seven runs over 10 innings from 14 hits and four walks. In his last start, he allowed two runs over five innings.

The Mets knocked him out early last season, tagging him for four runs on four hits including a home run over 2 1/3 innings. The Mets have the following career numbers against him:

Brett Baty 0-1, K

Game Notes

The New York Mets are slated to play their final game of the season this year in the Pacific or Mountain Time Zone. It is their 22nd of the season.

Saturday, infielder Jorge Polanco was recalled from his rehab assignment back to New York City for evaluation on his sore ankle.

Three Things To Watch For

Sean Manaea. Manaea is lined up for a bulk game Sunday afternoon. In his last outing, he allowed only one run, a solo homer, over five innings of work while striking out four batters. More importantly, his fastball sat at 91 mph, hitting 92 a few times. Manaea seems to be turning a corner in whatever was keeping his fastball slow in spring training. Over 39 innings and 13 games this season, Manaea has a 5.08 ERA, 3.82 FIP, 1.462 WHIP, and an 80 ERA+.

The Mets are moving up to “below-average.” For most of the season the Mets offense has been woeful. It’s still pretty stagnant, but there are signs of improvement. In the last few days, Bo Bichette and Marcus Semien have finally crossed over to a .600 OPS. That’s still pretty poor, but an OPS below .600 was even worse. The Mets had only two batters with an OPS .800 and above in Saturday’s lineup. Everyone else was below .700, but above .600. Next milestone: get a few players to get up to a .700 OPS.

A well-rested bullpen. With Austin Warren closing out Saturday’s game, Brooks Raley, Cionel Pérez, and Joey Gerber haven’t pitched since Wednesday. Devin Williams hasn’t pitched since last Monday. Everyone else hasn’t pitched since Friday. With an off-day Monday, the Mets will likely try to get everyone some reps in, especially if Manaea’s bulk performance doesn’t go so well.

Be aware the DSL Mets Blue have a John Sanchez at shortstop and a Jonn Sanchez in the outfield. The shortstop is a 17-year-old from the Dominican Republic and the outfielder is a 19-year-old from Venezuela. They both doubled, which is probably some kind of record.

Brooklyn is still just 17-33 and in last place in the South Atlantic League North division.

Voit went 5-for-19 with two home runs, three walks and a stolen base. Voit has mostly struggled this year, though, now owning a .698 OPS.

Players of the Week

Offense – John Bay, OF Brooklyn

John Bay was an undrafted free agent when he joined the Mets organization, but he’s done nothing but produce. That’s continued into 2026, as he looks like the best hitter on the Brooklyn Cyclones. He’s an older prospect at 25, but he’s been an integral offensive weapon for the Cyclones this season.

Pitching – Jose Chirinos, P St. Lucie

Several pitchers were lights out this week, but Jose Chirinos earns the nod in part because of his promotion to High-A Brooklyn on Monday. The 21-year-old was great in 2025 but has looked even better in 2026 with his 2.36 ERA. Brooklyn will be a test, and Chirinos will have to show he can handle it.

RHP Janson Junk (3-5, 4.80) vs. RHP Nolan McLean (2-4, 4.40)
SNY

Last week the Miami Marlins swept the New York Mets. Now the Mets have the chance to return the favor Sunday afternoon.

All eyes are on Nolan McLean. The Mets’ young pitcher has started to stack the tough starts. Over the last few outings he has flashed his usual electric stuff, however, he’s also had bumps that spiraled into massive innings for opposing batters. McLean has tremendous stuff and the Mets need the version of him that can give the bullpen a day off.

Mets Lineup

Carson Benge – RF

Bo Bichette – SS

Juan Soto – LF

Jared Young – DH

Mark Vientos – 1B

A.J. Ewing – CF

Brett Baty – 3B

Marcus Semien – 2B

Luis Torrens – C

Starting Pitcher: Nolan McLean

Nolan McLean has made 11 starts this season totaling 61 1/3 innings with a 4.40 ERA, 3.58 FIP, 1.092 WHIP, and a 90 ERA+. In his last two starts he has allowed 16 runs (13 earned) over nine innings.

His last start was emblematic of his recent struggles. He struck out the side in the first inning before things went off the rails in the next. Before those two starts McLean had a 2.92 ERA over nine starts. This will be McLean’s first start against the Marlins and no one on the Marlins roster have faced him in an official major league game.

Starting Pitcher: Janson Junk

Janson Junk has tossed 60 innings over 11 starts with a 4.80 ERA, 4.06 FIP, 1.300 WHIP, and an 83 ERA+ this season. Junk had two rough starts in mid-May allowing a total of 15 runs from 18 hits over 10 2/3 innings. He rebounded in his last start allowing only one run, scattering eight hits over five innings on Monday.

The Mets have the following career numbers against Junk:

Bo Bichette 3-4

Vidal Bruján 0-0, BB

MJ Melendez 0-3, 2 K

Juan Soto 1-2

Jared Young 0-1, K

Game Notes

Jorge Polanco continued his rehab Saturday playing three innings for Binghamton (Double-A) at first base. According to Mike Puma of the NY Post, the Mets are hopeful he will return for the Seattle series.

Three Things To Watch For

Under the hood. McLean still has a 3.16 xERA (75th percentile) and .216 xBA (77th percentile). His strikeout rate is still top tier (29.6%; 92nd percentile). McLean has been hit hard more recently which has seen him drop to around the middle of the league in barrel percentage and hard hit rate, but he’s still in 81st percentile for average exit velocity.

David Peterson. The Mets announced before Friday’s game that David Peterson was moving back to the bullpen with Sunday being his first available day. Peterson had two successful starts in mid-May allowing three runs off 10 hits over nine innings. His last start was pretty poor, allowing six runs off 11 hits and three walks over five innings against the Reds. In 33 1/3 innings as a starter he has a 7.56 ERA. In 20 innings as a reliever he has a 2.25 ERA.

OPS watch. Saturday, Bo Bichette was getting close again to a .600 OPS with a .592 OPS. He went 0-for-3 with a walk, dropping his OPS down to .588. Semien has also been hitting around the .600 OPS line as well. Saturday he went 2-for-4 with a double, raising his OPS to .582. With a good week both hitters could finally cross that .600 line.

DH Ji Hwan Bae: 2-4, SB (.787 OPS)

Syracuse only mustered three runs despite nine hits on Saturday. The Mets went a staggering 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position, stranding 12 runners on base.

Syracuse’s No. 2, 3, and 4 each had two hits. Bae, Arroyo, and Clifford each have an OPS above .767 on the season. Clifford, who doubled on Saturday, has an .800 OPS in May despite only hitting .222.

Jack Wenninger followed up the worst start of his 2026 season on May 24 with another troublesome one on Saturday. For the second-straight game, Wenninger allowed four earned runs. Across his last two starts, 9 1/3 innings, the former sixth-round pick has allowed 14 hits and eight earned runs. He had a 1.53 ERA prior to his last two rough outings.

Behind a seven-strikeout outing by Conley, Orellana and Guzman combined to throw four innings of scoreless ball. Orellana, 24, has a 3.47 ERA across 23 1/3 innings this season. He had a 2.96 ERA across 51 2/3 innings in Double-A and Triple-A last season. A trip up to Triple-A Syracuse should be on the horizon.

The Cyclones’ offense had a rare big day on Saturday. Their .609 OPS ranks dead-last by a large margin in the South Atlantic League, however, they were able to put across eight runs on Saturday.

Voit, Henriquez, and Benson each had multi-hit games. Bay, who has been a lone bright spot all season long for Binghamton, went 1-for-2, but scored three runs and stole his 13th base of the season. The undrafted free agent from Austin Peay had an .875 OPS across 83 at-bats to being his professional career last season.

Benson, who recently earned a call-up from High-A St. Lucie, is riding a five-game hitting streak (7-for-19, .368 average), raising his season High-A average to .250 after beginning his High-A career 1-for-13.

Cota has been sensational while pitching for High-A Brooklyn this season. Through 24 2/3 innings he has allowed only 13 hits and two runs (0.73 ERA). A second chance with Binghamton (Double-A) is likely in the offing. He made one start for Binghamton (Double-A) earlier this year and allowed nine hits and five runs over 4 2/3 innings.

Witt, who has already pitched for three different organizational levels this season, had a sensational Saturday in a bulk role behind Cota. All six outs he recorded over his two innings of work were via the strikeout. The 14th-round pick in 2024 cumulatively had a 9.78 ERA in 19 1/3 innings across the High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A levels this season.

Guzman, 21, had an .899 OPS across 252 at-bats in the Florida Complex League and Single-A levels last season. He is continuing his 2025 successes thus far in 2026.

Despite going hitless, Peña stole his 15th base of the season after reaching via an error. His OPS is still above .800 at .812 despite the 0-for-5 Saturday.

St. Lucie scored four in the 10th inning en route to the extra-innings victory. Salgado had a pinch-hit triple and scored after Peña reached on the aforementioned error. Guzman then singled-home Peña before St. Lucie added their fourth and final run of the frame.

The 32-year-old was making his second rehab start since going on the injured list in April with Achilles bursitis and a wrist issue.
Polanco was hitting .179/.246/.286 with one home run in 14 games when he got hurt. He will be expected to see a lot of time as the designated hitter when he returns.

The Mets (24-33) defeated the Marlins (26-32) 9-7 in 10 innings on Friday. New York jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Miami slowly but surely crawled back into the game before tying it 7-7 in the eighth inning. MJ Melendez delivered the walk-off blow in the bottom of the 10th, a two-run homer, to put the game to bed and give the Mets their second straight win.

Jorge Polanco played in his second rehab game on Friday for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and he had an extremely encouraging game. Polanco recorded a three-run home run and two walks, reaching base a total of three times. Polanco has played in just 14 games for the Mets this year and had little impact when healthy, but the Mets are certainly hoping he’s back on the major league squad before too long.
