HITTER OF THE MONTH: CHRISTOPHER MOREL

Statistics: 20 G, .318/.400/.636/1.036, 5 HR, 6 2B, 13 RBI, 9 BB, 18 SO

Do you remember that the Mets have Christopher Morel? Signed as a minor league free agent on July 1, Morel was sent straight to Syracuse and started mashing. He’s got pop, and he made a decent bit of non-homer contact this month too. This also doesn’t include his three-home-run game from August 2, either, so he’s really been productive in Triple-A since joining the organization.

The story with Morel has always been the same: When at his best, he can be a good major league hitter who makes loud contact. When at his worst, he can’t make contact. The Marlins saw his worst this season when he struck out 38.4% of the time in 22 big league games, ultimately leading to his release. His strikeout rate was only 24% in July, which is definitely an improvement, but it’s still against Triple-A pitching. At this point, we need to see it in the majors to believe there’s any real change. He has also never been able to find a defensive home, and has split his time between the two corner infield spots for Syracuse. Maybe he gets a chance at some point if there’s an injury, but I don’t know how likely it is.

PITCHER OF THE MONTH: JONAH TONG

Jonah Tong needed this. After putting up perhaps the best season of any minor league pitcher in 2025 and even earning a big league look, Tong’s taken a substantial step back in 2026. He’s walking too many hitters (a consequence of just not throwing enough strikes) and getting hit more. The new pitches he’s been working on just haven’t been as effective as they need to be. July was at least a step in the right direction.

Is he back? I don’t think I’m willing to say that yet. His K-BB% in July was almost exactly the same as it has been all year, so there is a possibility he just got more fortunate batted ball luck. With that said, it’s at least encouraging to see nonetheless. His last two starts suggest there could be a real improvement, giving up one earned run over 9 and 2/3 innings with an improved K-BB%. Most of those gains came from strikeouts, though, as he still walked 15% of batters. That’s just too high.

It was a great bounce-back month for Noah Hall, who was having a tough season repeating High-A. It’s really hard to get much better allowing a single earned run and just nine hits in 23 and 1/3 innings. Hall’s biggest issue is he doesn’t throw enough strikes for someone who sits around 90-91 mph, and while he made slight improvements in July, they weren’t big enough to feel truly encouraged by. He’s also finally up to Double-A to start August.

The lefty has fanned 31 and walked seven in his last three starts. The Mets selected him in the second round of the 2024 Draft out of Duke, and he pitched to a 3.06 ERA in 117 2/3 innings between Binghamton and Brooklyn in 2025. His ERA this year is at 3.78, which leads the team and is fourth in the Eastern League.

He is ranked the team’s third-best pitching prospect on MLB Pipeline behind Jonah Tong and Jack Wenninger.

Syracuse battled back from 7-2 and 10-5 deficits and scored twice in the ninth, winning 11-10 on a Yonny Hernandez walk-off sacrifice fly.

Francisco Lindor, who singled for Binghamton on Friday, was given the day off Saturday. He will play for Syracuse Sunday and then the Mets will decide whether he is ready for major-league action.

Jonathan Santucci, one of the organization’s top arms, allowed just two runs in 9 2/3 innings across two starts. Jose Chirinos, not as highly touted as other pitchers in the Mets organization like Jack Wenninger and Santucci, also pitched well. His latest dominant outing for the St. Lucie Mets not only helped St. Lucie earn a series win, but it also earned Chirinos a promotion to High-A Brooklyn.

Triple-A Syracuse

The Syracuse Mets lost their series against the Rochester Red Wings, dropping four of six games. Despite the series loss, the Mets scored 39 runs, averaging 6.5 runs per game. Syracuse is 29-27 and in third place in the International League East division.

Ryan Clifford remained hot with the bat, going 6-for-21 with three home runs in the series. Clifford also added a double and three walks, raising his season OPS to .790.

Veteran Christian Arroyo added a couple of home runs while going 7-for-19 at the plate. Arroyo drove in four runs and walked once. He owns a .779 OPS.

Jackson Cluff went 5-for-14 with two doubles and a home run, driving in four runs and scoring four runs. He also walked twice and stole three bases. He now owns a .596 OPS after struggling for most of the early season.

Kodai Senga struggled a bit in a rehab start, allowing three runs (two earned) in 3 2/3 innings. He gave up four hits and two walks while also hitting a batter. He also struck out five batters.

Jack Weisenburger gave Syracuse their most effective start of the series, allowing a run in 4 1/3 innings. He allowed three hits and two walks while striking out five. Weisenburger has a rough 6.75 ERA in five starts with Syracuse.

Double-A Binghamton

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies lost four of six games to the Portland Sea Dogs. The Rumble Ponies were able to limit the damage in the series, winning two of the final three games after losing each of the first three. Binghamton is now 18-33 and still in last place in the Eastern League Northeast division.

Jorge Polanco played in three rehab games for Binghamton in this series, putting together some encouraging performances. In total, he went 2-for-5 with a home run and two walks. His OPS in three games was 1.571.

JT Schwartz launched three home runs in this series while going 7-for-18 at the plate. In addition to his three homers, Schwartz also hit a double and walked twice. He now owns a .673 OPS.

Jose Ramos looked solid at the plate, going 5-for-18 with a double, a home run, three walks and a stolen base. Ramos drove in four runs and scored two of his own. He possesses a .741 OPS.

Santucci, as mentioned in the intro, looked fantastic in two starts, totaling two runs allowed in 9 2/3 innings. He allowed seven hits and three walks while striking out 12. In 10 starts, Santucci owns a 4.30 ERA.

Carlos Guzman had two great appearances out of the bullpen, allowing one run in four innings. He allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out two. In eight appearances with Binghamton, Guzman owns a 2.92 ERA.

High-A Brooklyn

The Brooklyn Cyclones won their first series of the year, taking four of six games from the Wilmington Blue Rocks. After losing two of the first three games, the Cyclones closed out the series strong with three consecutive wins. Brooklyn is still just 17-33 and in last place in the South Atlantic League North division.

John Bay continues to be Brooklyn’s most impressive hitter this season. He went 5-for-17 in this series with a double, a triple and a home run. Bay walked twice and stole two bases. He also drove in five runs and scored 10. He owns an .821 OPS in 45 games this season.

Mitch Voit, the Mets’ most recent first-round draft pick, also had an impressive week. Voit went 5-for-19 with two home runs, three walks and a stolen base. Voit has mostly struggled this year, though, now owning a .698 OPS.

Corey Collins demonstrated elite plate discipline, earning 10 walks despite otherwise going 3-for-13. Two of his three hits, however, were for extra bases, including a home run. Collins now owns a .721 OPS.

Daviel Hurtado made two starts and was dominant in each, giving up no runs in 7 2/3 total innings. He allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out six. These were Hurtado’s first two starts at the High-A level after owning a 5.00 ERA in four appearances with St. Lucie.

Irving Cota made a brief three-inning start, but he was excellent with just a hit and a walk. He gave up no runs and didn’t record a strikeout. Cota has been exceptional in 2026, and he has a 0.73 ERA in seven appearances with Brooklyn.

Low-A St. Lucie

The St. Lucie Mets had a strong series win, earning four victories in six games against the Bradenton Marauders. St. Lucie’s pitching showed out, giving up just over three runs per game in the series. St. Lucie is now 24-27 and in third place in the Florida State League East division.

Elian Peña had a solid week at the plate, going 6-for-20 with a home run, five walks and two stolen bases. Peña drove in three runs and also scored five runs. He now has an OPS approaching .800 at .798.

Jamari Baylor only played in two games, but he made the most of his plate appearances by going 4-for-9 with two doubles and a home run. Baylor drove in four runs and owns an .842 OPS.

AJ Salgado recorded two triples in addition to a double and a home run. In total, he went 5-for-21 with two walks, driving in six runs and scoring five. Salgado now owns an .833 OPS.

Chirinos was dominant in his start, too, tossing six scoreless innings (one unearned run allowed) with nine strikeouts. Chirinos has been excellent with St. Lucie, owning a 2.36 ERA in nine appearances (seven starts). His next start will be for Brooklyn.

Nicolas Carreno also shut down the opposing offense, recording seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Carreno has also been stellar this season, owning a 1.43 ERA in 10 appearances (five starts).

Emilio Obispo joined the fun with a shutout of his own, tossing five scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out four, lowering his ERA in six games with St. Lucie to 2.33.

FCL Mets

The FCL Mets went 1-2 this past week, with two of their games being postponed due to rain. They are now 9-10 and in third place in the Florida Complex League East division.

Justin Ramirez did the most damage with the bat, despite recording just four at-bats. He went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, also recording a walk and a stolen base. He owns an .869 OPS.

Franyel Diaz and John Valle each recorded a scoreless two-inning appearance out of the bullpen. Diaz (six appearances) and Valle (five appearances) both have yet to give up an earned run this year.

DSL Mets

The Dominican Summer League began on Monday for the DSL Mets Orange and DSL Mets Blue squads. Both teams won their season debuts.

Henry Manrique (3-for-4, 2B, BB, RBI, R) and Leyvi Rodriguez (3.2 IP, 0 ER) starred for DSL Mets Blue, while Yorber Semprun (4-for-5, 3B, BB, 3 RBI, 2 R) and Ryan Rudas (3-for-6, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R) led the way for DSL Mets Orange.

Offense – John Bay, OF Brooklyn

John Bay was an undrafted free agent when he joined the Mets organization, but he’s done nothing but produce. That’s continued into 2026, as he looks like the best hitter on the Brooklyn Cyclones. He’s an older prospect at 25, but he’s been an integral offensive weapon for the Cyclones this season.

Pitching – Jose Chirinos, P St. Lucie

Several pitchers were lights out this week, but Jose Chirinos earns the nod in part because of his promotion to High-A Brooklyn on Monday. The 21-year-old was great in 2025 but has looked even better in 2026 with his 2.36 ERA. Brooklyn will be a test, and Chirinos will have to show he can handle it.

The Syracuse offense did not make much noise on Sunday, totaling just six base runners in total. Half of their hits went for extra-base hits, including a pair of homers from Cluff and Arroyo. Pache raised his season OPS to just one tick under the .775 mark, and could be on the Mets’ radar if injuries continue to pile up in Queens.

A.J. Ewing has struggled over the last week or so, posting just a .544 OPS in the month of May.

Thornton was solid in his Triple-A debut, allowing seven base runners over six innings of work and throwing roughly 70% of his pitches for strikes. He matched the output of his offense, but the bullpen behind him struggled once again.

Lavender has continued to look solid as he comes back from Tommy John surgery, while Lambert, who was considered to be a high-profile relief prospect coming into the season, has been struggling for the last month or so.

Double-A

As mentioned, Double-A Binghamton’s game was rained out. They’ll play a doubleheader on Sunday as a result.

Brewer and Hodges provided solid relief, backing up Hall and keeping the Cyclones in the game. Felix Cepeda lost it in the 10th, allowing the winning run to score on the third pitch of the inning.

Bay and Perozo both turned in major performances, including homers, but accounted for the majority of the Cyclones’ offense. Those two combined for 12 total bases, with the rest of the team totaling just three the entire game.

Following, their offense finally awoke for four runs in the final two frames. Hernandez went yard in the sixth after Biller singled, and in the seventh Gutierrez doubled in front of a Willhoite game-tying homer.

Correa was solid in his work as an opener for the Cyclones in the second game of their doubleheader, but nothing else went according to plan for their pitching staff. Carlson was brutalized from the jump and ended up on the long side of the decision in this game. Witt was tasked with being the bulk arm for the night cap, but struggled to keep the Hot Rods off the board as well, allowing a runner of his own and an inherited runner to score. Arnaud lost the game in the bottom half of the seventh on a walk-off homer.

Single-A

St. Lucie Mets 3, Lakeland Flying Tigers 2

Benson was the catalyst for the Mets’ offense, which only needed three runs on the day to support their superb pitching performance. Benson’s triple was his fourth on the season already, and he is pushing for a call-up to High-A Brooklyn before the summer gets going.

Meanwhile, Peña continued to be an on-base machine, reaching base three times on Saturday. On the base paths, Benson swiped his sixth base of the young season, but was also thrown out once.

Chirinos has been a regular on Saturdays for St. Lucie, and he turned in another premier performance over the weekend. Six innings of one-run ball is arguably the best outing of his career, as he set a new season-high in innings pitched. Behind him, Ryan Dollar made quick work of the Flying Tigers for his second save of the season, needing just four pitches, all strikes, to end the ballgame.

Triple-A: Syracuse Mets

Hitter of the Month: Cristian Pache

Statistics: 23 G, .309/.349/.494/.843, 2 HR, 5 2B, 2 3B, 11 RBI, 5 BB, 23 SO

Can A.J. Ewing be the Triple-A player of the month with just three games played? For this exercise we opted to go with someone with a bit more of a sample size at the level. That gives the crown to Cristian Pache, who carried over his torrid pace from spring training into the regular season. The former top prospect of the Atlanta Braves has had a tough go in the big leagues throughout his career, but has slugged for the Mets down in Triple-A to begin 2026.

Pache might not have had the best slash line of anyone on Syracuse, but it was still great. That, coupled with him playing some of the most of any player and trailing just Ryan Clifford in extra-base hits, gave him the edge over other contenders. With all the Mets’ troubles offensively this season as well, Pache is making a strong case to get a shot. He’s always been highly touted for his glove in center field, but he could never hit enough. If he can even hit close to this level in the big leagues, he’ll be good enough to at least be a bench player on an MLB roster.

Pitcher of the Month: Jack Wenninger

Statistics: 5 G (5 GS), 22 1/3 IP, 16 H, 5 R (4 ER), 26 SO, 12 BB, 1.61 ERA, 1.25 WHIP

Has Jack Wenninger pitched his final game in Triple-A? Probably not. But the Mets have a glaring issue with one of the spots in their rotation, and Wenninger is carving in Syracuse.

He’s still not a finished product. Wenninger’s in-zone percentage and general control is still a work in progress, but it’s good enough to be an upgrade over what the Mets currently have in the rotation. Everything else is ready. His arsenal is solid, headlined by his double-plus splitter, and he’s fully built up to handle a starter’s regular workload. He’s a major-league pitcher, the only question is when.

Is Ewing playing himself into a major-league call-up already? There’s a reason he made a case for Triple-A player of the month in just three games. He does everything well. He makes a ton of contact with a good approach, he plays great defense (at two positions to boot), and he’s showing serious growth in what was his one shortcoming: power. He’s hitting the ball with authority, and while it’ll never be upper-echelon power, it might be good! He’s played himself into being the Mets’ best prospect and is making a strong case to join the big league club.

Pitcher of the Month: Gabriel Rodriguez

Statistics: 7 G (0 GS), 8 IP, 1 H, 1 R (0ER), 14 SO, 5 BB, 0.00 ERA, 0.75 WHIP

The Mets have many interesting starting pitching prospects in Double-A, but all of them were, at best, inconsistent in April. Gabriel Rodriguez, a 27-year-old reliever, was the opposite of inconsistent. He gave up one hit in eight innings, struck out a huge percentage of the batters he faced, and was overall dominant. For someone signed as a free agent in February who last pitched in affiliated ball in 2023, and never above Single-A, Rodriguez is looking like a find. Considering his age, Syracuse (Triple-A) could be close on the horizon, and if things go well, Queens not far after. It doesn’t hurt that he’s a lefty, either.

It hasn’t been a great start to the season for the Cyclones, and the lineup hasn’t had many standouts. Really, the only one has been John Bay, a 24-year-old outfielder signed as an undrafted free agent last season. Bay’s showing both strong power and on-base skills, and has been playing more center field this season than ever before. That might be more because of need; Brooklyn doesn’t have much on the roster in terms of outfield options, but he’s handled it well, regardless. It’s going to take a lot for Bay to appear on prospect radars, but this is a great start.

Pitcher of the Month: Irving Cota

Statistics: 5 G (3 GS), 18 2/3 IP, 12 H, 2 R (2 ER), 11 SO, 5 BB, 0.96 ERA, 0.91 WHIP

Brooklyn’s pitching staff has been a little better than the bats, but many of the bigger names like Noah Hall and Joel Díaz have struggled. Irving Cota, while he hasn’t been overwhelming, has done a great job of both keeping hitters off the bases and keeping runs off the board. The 22-year-old righty has impressed at every stop of his minor league career, and he’s making another strong impression to begin 2026.

Single-A: St. Lucie Mets

Hitter of the Month: Elian Peńa

Statistics: 22 G, .353/.467/.482/.949, 1 HR, 8 2B, 11 RBI, 17 BB, 16 SO

Who else but Elian Peña? If not for Ewing, Peña would easily be the Mets prospect attracting the most attention. Even with Ewing stealing the show, Peña is still demanding plenty of eyeballs. Contact, power, speed, he’s showing it all. It will be a shock if Peña is not a universal top-100 prospect by the midseason update. Randy Guzman and AJ Salgado deserve shoutouts, both with several home runs already this year (five in April), but it was always going to be Peña here.

Pitcher of the Month: Nicolas Carreno

Statistics: 5 G (3 GS), 16 IP, 9 H, 5 R (4 ER), 18 SO, 7 BB, 2.25 ERA, 0.88 WHIP

Nicolas Carreno might be the next breakout to come out of the Mets’ pitching development system. The ERA and WHIP are obviously great, but the strikeouts really stand out. In 16 innings, 25 strikeouts is a fantastic mark. He has both a four-seam and a sinker and throws each of them hard, but the star is his slider. It’s his most used pitch, and hitters can’t lay off, chasing it 44.2% of the time so far this season and whiffing at it even more. Still just 19 years old, Carreno is a name to watch.

The performance of the day goes to Brooklyn Cyclones’ (High-A) starter Channing Austin, who went 5 2/3 scoreless with just one hit and seven strikeouts. The 24-year-old is putting his name on some radars early this season, and could find himself cracking the back-half of top-30 prospect lists if he keeps his current pace up. On the other side, the Syracuse (Triple-A) bullpen squandered Jonah Tong‘s great start, allowing eight runs in three innings of work.

The Syracuse offense got off to a hot start on Saturday, and it more than did its part to remain in the game. A.J. Ewing has been impressive since reaching Triple-A, and could find his way to Queens before long if he continues his production at the plate, along with his strong defense and stellar running game. Cristian Pache might not be far off the Mets’ radar with their recent offensive struggles, and his two-double performance certainly helped.

After signing a minor-league contract with the team, Luke Jackson was roughed up in his debut with the Mets’ organization. Jonah Tong turned in a strong start for Syracuse, looking much more like the player who dominated minor league baseball throughout the 2025 season. Tong did not allow a hit until the sixth inning, marking his longest no-hit bid since just last year with Binghamton (Double-A). The bullpen behind him allowed seven earned runs, wasting his incredibly strong performance.

Double-A

New Hampshire (14-9) 2, Binghamton (9-16) 1 / SUSPENDED – Bottom 4th

Box Score

Binghamton only had four trips to the plate before the game was suspended on Saturday, recording only two hits in the four innings. Ramos will lead off for Binghamton when play resumes.

Santucci was struggling mightily with his command in this game, putting seven runners on base before the rain bailed him out for the day. Whoever resumes the game for the Rumble Ponies will have to deal with a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the bottom of the fourth with the bottom of the Fisher Cats lineup at the plate.

The Cyclones’ offense did the bare minimum they needed to on Saturday to bring home a win, scoring two runs and recording just five hits as a whole in a shutout win. Ronald Hernandez connected for his first homer of the year, while John Bay continued his incredible start to the season with another double and multi-total base performance.

Undrafted free agent Channing Austin, albeit much older than the average age of a player in High-A, has continued to dominate the High-A ranks to begin his third professional season. He was backed up by superb pitching out of the Cyclones’ bullpen, with 10 straight outs being recorded by the Brooklyn staff. In total, just four Keys reached base in a combined one-hitter effort.

Single-A

The St. Lucie bats were incredibly quiet on Saturday night, mustering just two runs and posing minimal threats for the majority of the night. Randy Guzman has continued to be an interesting name to follow on the farm so far, and could find his way to High-A Brooklyn before long, which would be a much more significant test of his skills in such a pitcher-friendly ballpark. Despite not recording a hit, Edward Lantigua recorded his first multi-steal game of the season.

Unlike the hitting, the Mets’ pitching staff was incredibly strong Saturday afternoon. Jose Chirinos and Elwis Mijares combined for seven solid innings, giving their bats every chance to bring them back into the game. The issue, however, was that the St. Lucie defense let Chirinos down early on, contributing to his three unearned runs on the day.
