After a long offseason of inaction following the re-signing of outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to a four-year, $110 million dollar deal in November, the New York Mets sprung back into action last week, re-signing left-hander Jerry Blevins and right-hander Fernando Salas to one-year deals and even adding veteran southpaw Tom Gorzelanny on a minor-league contract.

So in one fell swoop they completed their No. 2 offseason priority which was to secure two veteran arms for the bullpen. And the interesting part is that they didn’t have to trade Jay Bruce to free up the payroll dollars to get each of those deals done. It looks like the former Reds slugger will go into the the 2017 season as the de facto right fielder for the New York Mets. As Jerry Seinfeld would say, “Not that there’s anything wrong with that.”

Blevins, 33, was the biggest prize of the bullpen bounty, signing a one year deal for $6.5 million with a team option for $6 million. It’s important to remember that Blevins began the offseason looking for a three year, $19 million dollar deal, so what a coup this is for Sandy Alderson who played his hand brilliantly.

In Blevins the Mets get a sure-fire commodity who gave them a 2.79 ERA in 73 games last season, while striking out 52, walking 15, and posting a career-best 11.1 strikeout rate. Not only did he hold lefty batters to a .637 OPS for the Mets in 2016, but he was even better against right-handed batters who he held to a .611 OPS in 55 at-bats.

Salas, 31, got a one-year deal worth $3 million dollars which seems like a steal compared to some of the other deals similar pitchers have received in previous offseasons. Salas posted a 2.08 ERA and 19/0 K/BB ratio over 17.1 innings with the Mets in 2016 after coming over in a trade from the Angels at the deadline. For his career he has a 3.64 ERA and K/BB ratio of 385/114 in 388.1 innings over seven seasons.

I read a few articles elsewhere over the weekend that the Mets are “bringing the band back,” or essentially showing up with the “same old team” as last year – the one that barely scraped by and lost the Wild Card. Some people…

If you think this is the same team as last year, put down the pipe and think again. Last Opening Day we had Eric Campbell, Logan Verrett, Alejandro De Aza, Antonio Bastardo, Kevin Plawecki, and Jim Henderson in the home team dugout. A motley crew to say the least.

Those names have now been replaced with Jay Bruce, Robert Gsellman, Seth Lugo, Fernando Salas, Jose Reyes, and Rene Rivera. That’s quite a big upgrade. In fact, it’s actually a formidable upgrade and anyone who can’t see that really isn’t very good at baseball.

Meanwhile the Nationals… What have they done? Their bullpen is in complete shambles. Sure they got Adam Eaton, but he essentially replaces the offense they lost behind the plate with Wilson Ramos. Daniel Murphy is due for some regression, Ryan Zimmerman batted .218 last season Jayson Werth batted .244.

Look, all I’m saying is that the Washington Nationals are not exactly the unbeatable force that everyone is making them out to be. And that the New York Mets are not a team with a second place ceiling at best. And when are these so-called experts ever right anyway?

I’ve been following baseball long enough to know that there are only two absolutes in this game. Number one, nobody ever wins anything on paper. And number two, there’s no telling who lady luck will smile upon in any given season.

The way I see it, we have a tremendous team entering the new season and we have much to be excited about here. This is a significantly better group of players than the team we had on last year’s Opening Day roster. This could be the year that for the very first time we’ll finally get to see the Fab Five all taking a turn in the same starting rotation. Potentially, we could have five 25 homer bats in the same starting lineup. Last season we had the third best bullpen in baseball, this year it could be the best. This is the best team on balance that we’ve had in years. I’m really feeling it this season… This is a team every Met fan needs to get behind.

Loney has signed a minor league deal with the Rangers, reports Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. Jim Henderson will be headed to the Chicago Cubs on a minor league deal, according Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish.

Loney, 32, disappointed in 100 games with the Mets in 2016. He slashed just .265/.307/.397 with nine homers, 16 doubles, and a triple, well below average both for the league and the first base position. He was an emergency acquisition to replace Lucas Duda, who missed most of the season due to injury. Loney was acquired from the San Diego Padres after playing two months in their minor league system. He owns a career .284/.336/.410 batting line.

Henderson, 34, had an up and down season with the Mets, finishing the year with a 4.11 ERA over 35 innings pitched. Over that span he struck out an impressive 40 batters while walking 14. He missed most of June, July, and August with a bicep issue. He has a career 3.61 ERA in 137 MLB innings.

While it appears the Mets will be in no rush to re-sign Yoenis Cespedes as reported by Buster Olney, there will be a lot of housekeeping decisions the front office will make as they get ready for a new hot stove season.

The Mets started their march to 2017 by exercising their option on Jose Reyes – a no-brainer for a player who provided some modest production and put a positive charge into the lineup. While the Colorado Rockies remain on the hook for the $41 million still owed to Reyes, the Mets get him for the major league minimum of $507,500.

Another no-brainer was the decision not to pick up Jon Niese’s $10 million dollar option and paying the $500K buyout instead.

The next important decisions facing the Mets is deciding whether to exercise the $13 million option on Jay Bruce and whether they should make a $17.2 million qualifying offer on second baseman Neil Walker.

My guess is that they split the deck and exercise the option on Bruce and not tender a QO to Walker. Bringing back Bruce does two things, it gives them insurance if they can’t bring back Cespedes, and he provides the team with a nice trade asset if Ces comes back. While the team’s financial fortunes have definitely improved, they are still not at a place where they will gamble $17.2 million on Walker’s back surgery.

Two Mets I hope to see back are utility man Kelly Johnson and right-hander Bartolo Colon. Both players have proven to be solid commodities to have on hand and also help keep the bench and clubhouse loose. Neither of them is going to break the bank.

The front office has their hands full with a dozen players eligible for arbitration. Here they are with their updated MLBTR projections:

Josh Edgin – ($500K) $800,000

Jeurys Familia – ($4.1M) $8,700,000

Lucas Duda – ($6.725M) $6,700,000

Matt Harvey – ($4.3M) $5,200,000

Jacob deGrom – ($600K) $4,500,000

Rene Rivera – ($1.7M) $2,200,000

Addison Reed – ($5.2M) $10,600,000

Wilmer Flores – ($520K) $1,900,000

Travis d’Arnaud – ($540K) $1,700,000

Justin Ruggiano – ($180K) $1,500,000

Jim Henderson – ($507K) $1,400,000

Zack Wheeler – ($546K) $1,000,000

Looking at that list I have to figure the only non-tenders will be Justin Ruggiano and Jim Henderson, and I’m not sure what the Mets do with Rene Rivera. I really have it in my mind that Sandy Alderson is going to completely blowup and revamp the catching situation. How exactly, I have no idea, it’s just a hunch. There was a lot of disappointment with TDA.

So before the Mets begin any of their offseason shopping, these are some of the in-house decisions they’ll take care of first. After that it will be onward and upward to quote a phrase.

That’s a lot of coin for setup man Addison Reed and combined with Jeurys Familia the two would combine to earn $20 million or more. Justin Ruggiano looks like a non-tender candidate to me.

The hurt of the Wild Card game is still entrenched in us but it’s time to start talking at who the Mets will try to keep for the 2017 season and who will likely move on.

I will take a very early look at what the Mets should do with the options they have at each position.

Outfield

With the trade for Jay Bruce the Mets now have a logjam in the outfield with a majority of them being left-handed hitters that aren’t suited well for center field. Of course the big domino is Yoenis Cespedes and what happens after he opts out of his contract with the Mets.

Jay Bruce – Picking up the $13 million option seems like a no-brainer to me despite his struggles with the Mets. No what to do with him after picking it up is the real question. My move would be to trade him. However you slice it, an outfielder with an OPS over .800, 33 homers and almost 100 RBI is going to have value on the trade front. I just don’t see how he fits on the Mets with the likes of Curtis Granderson and Michael Conforto.

Yoenis Cespedes – Bringing Yo back is a must for a team that showed how much they sorely missed him when he was on the disabled list this year. It’s tough to imagine a successful Mets offseason that doesn’t include Cespedes returning.

Alejandro De Aza – No reason to bring him back with what is already a crowded Mets outfield of left-handed hitters.

Justin Ruggiano – The right-handed hitter showed well in limited time with the Mets but is arbitration eligible and will be non-tendered. I would bring him back on a minor league as insurance for Juan Lagares.

Infield

For a Mets team that started with limited infield depth (Eric Campbell on Opening Day roster) they actually finished with some new intriguing options in Jose Reyes, T.J. Rivera and even Gavin Cecchini.

Jose Reyes – The Mets have a an option for Reyes at the league minimum so he’ll be back as depth with obvious questions surrounding David Wright.

Neil Walker – As long as he’s progressing well from his surgery giving him a qualifying offer is a must. If Cespedes leaves the Mets you have to bring Walker back to help patch the middle of the order. Unfortunately I don’t see a scenario in which the Mets spring for multi-year deals for Walker and Cespedes.

Lucas Duda – Before he returned from his injury there were some whispers of the Mets possibly non-tending the first baseman. I don’t see that happening. I see little reason why he shouldn’t be the Mets everyday first baseman in 2017 while Dominic Smith continues to develop in the minors.

James Loney – The fill-in had a nice start and finish to his Mets career but overall he was below average offensively and defensively (don’t believe everything Terry Collins say). With Duda there is no room for someone that only plays first base on the bench. We will have seen the last of Loney in a Mets uniform.

Kelly Johnson – Let’s just go ahead and save next year’s Akeel Morries by re-signing the valuable back-up infielder.

Catcher

One of the bigger questions (outside of Cespedes) the Mets face this offseason is what to do with Travis d’Arnaud and the catching position as a whole.

Travis d’Arnaud – Now is where I will take some heat and that’s fine because I believe the Mets should stick with TDA for next season. Yes he stunk offensively this year and yes he couldn’t throw runners out (pitchers didn’t help) but he was one of the best pitch framers in baseball and it seemed pretty clear to me that he never fully recovered from his labrum surgery. You don’t go from being a 2.0 oWAR player two years in a row to a guy with an .625 OPS without an underlying issue.

Rene Rivera – The defensive specialist is under contract for 2017 but is arbitration eligible and should be back with the Mets next year as the backup along with being the personal catcher for Noah Syndergaard. The lack of good free agent catcher options also played a role in my thought process of keeping both Rivera and TDA.

Rotation

The Mets starters were a big reason why the Mets made the playoffs doing so with the emergence of Robert Gsellman and Seth Lugo.

Bartolo Colon – The steadying force in the Mets rotation all year is a free agent and has said he wants to continue pitching. He should be brought back on the same type of deal he signed last offseason to provide depth yet again.

Bullpen

Addison Reed and Jeurys Familia have combined to be one of the best end of the bullpen combos in baseball since August of last season. Sandy Alderson yet again went out and got reinforcements in August this year to help lengthen the bullpen.

Jerry Blevins – All the lefties done since coming to the Mets is pitch to a 2.49 ERA while striking out 10.7 batters per nine innings. Bring him back to tandem with Josh Smoker as the two lefties in the bullpen.

Fernando Salas – Struck out 19 while walking nobody after coming over to the Mets in another genius August trade by Alderson. Bring him back and let Hansel Robels continue to excel in the 6th inning/multiple inning role.

Josh Edgin – Pitched well against lefties in a small sample size (.535 OPS) and is first time eligible for arbitration. Fate could be tied to that of Blevins, if he re-signs I would non-tender Edgin and hope to sign to a minor league deal.

Jim Henderson – Started his Mets career off strong with a 1.46 ERA in his first 17 appearances before running into the Terry Collins misuse train. Showed off 95/96 MPH with his fastball in the final week of the season but still not enough to save him from being non-tendered. Another guy it wouldn’t hurt to re-sign on a minor league deal.

Logan Verrett, Rafael Montero, and Sean Gilmartin are all guys with their 40-man roster spots vulnerable after rough seasons. I would boot Verrett and Montero off the 40 and keep Gilmartin at least until they find a better depth arm later in the offseason. For position players I see Eric Campbell as the most likely guy to get bounced from the 40.

Of course all these moves could change with Cespedes deciding to sign elsewhere. That would completely throw a wrench in the plans and could force the Mets to look at upgrades at a position like catcher. Would also force the Mets to keep Bruce as a power outfield bat.

Another dubious decision by manager Terry Collins could have caused damaging results, but the Mets were saved by a couple of pitching prospects who performed gracefully under pressure.

In a must win series opener against the Cardinals, starter Jon Niese lasted a third of an inning as his faulty knee failed him, retiring only one of the four batters he faced.

Rookies Robert Gsellman and Josh Smoker restored order tossing a combined 5 2/3 scoreless innings to keep the Mets alive and well in the wild card hunt, with Gsellman getting the 7-4 win in his major league debut.

Gsellman’s introduction to the bigs was foreboding when his first offering was drilled for a double off the bat of Yadier Molina, scoring two of the runners he inherited from Niese. After Jhonny Peralta tied it up with a ground out to Reyes, the young right-hander struck out Jedd Gyorko, maintaining his cool for the rest of his joyous stay.

Even though Gsellman was warned Niese may have an early exit. “It was my first time ever coming out of the bullpen, so it felt kind of awkward,” Gsellman said. “You still have to take the mound the same way as when you’re starting.”

Gsellman showed some jitters, but also flashed some big-league stuff after that Molina double, and we saw some of the maturity and pitching smarts that his former B-Mets manager Pedro Lopez talked about in April.

“I think he’s going to be the next guy, I really believe so,” Lopez said of Gsellman. “He probably doesn’t light you guys up with the radar gun. Probably he doesn’t throw the 97, 98 like Syndergaard, Wheeler, Harvey, Matz. I’ll tell you what, this guy — we talked about him in the meetings when big-league camp started.”

Another interesting point in the cited article, was that despite trading away 10 minor-league pitchers last season, the Mets held on to Gsellman and then added him to the 40-man roster last off-season to protect him in the Rule 5 Draft. It seemed obvious he was being regarded as a keeper.

Offensively for the Mets, they continue to flex some more muscle since they’ve gotten healthier. Wilmer Flores drew first blood last night, with a three run blast in the top of the first, which Niese gave right back in the bottom of the inning.

But Jose Reyes and Asdrubal Cabrera, red hot from his return from the DL, regained the lead on consecutive run-scoring hits in the 2nd, then Justin Ruggiano provided a signature moment when he crushed a solo shot to center for a 6-3 cushion in the 4th. The 461-foot blast eclipsed the 457-foot homer by Yoenis Cespedes that was deemed the longest of the season.

After a Randal Grichuk line drive home run closed the gap 6-4, James Loney picked a fine time to break his slump with a flare to center field, tacking on another dose of insurance.

St. Louis had many attempts to get back in the game, but the Mets bullpen of Jerry Blevins, Jim Henderson, and Addison Reed muscled their way out of men in scoring position, paving the way for Jeurys Familia’s MLB-leading 42nd save.

This monumental win puts the Mets 3 ½ games within striking distance of St. Louis for the second wild card spot, and a chance to gain more ground on Wednesday when Jacob deGrom, looking to redeem himself after his last dreadful outing against the Giants, takes the mound.

I am totally baffled why Mateo was sent back down to Double-A after three scoreless innings in Triple-A. The B-Mets pitching staff faced probably the most powerful offensive team in the Minor Leagues.

Henderson was first put on the 15-Day disabled list June 19 with right biceps tendinitis. He started his rehab assignment on July 1 at Double-A Binghamton, where he allowed eight runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out four batters in 4.2 innings.

He then threw three scoreless innings with five strikeouts for the Las Vegas 51s before a hamstring issue shut him down after his appearance on July 18th.

In 31 appearances for the Mets this season, Henderson was 1-2 with a 4.26 ERA, while striking out 30 batters in 21 innings.
