<p><span style="color: #000000;">Tuesday night&#8217;s loss to the Red Sox in Boston marked the Mets&#8217; first three-game losing streak of the season and pushed them a game and a half back of the Phillies for the division lead. After only scoring 10 runs in their last seven games, New York put half that run total up in Wednesday night&#8217;s win against Boston. <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/batybr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-05-22_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Brett Baty</a></strong> drove in three runs from the nine hole and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/megilty01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-05-22_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Tylor Megill</a></strong> struck out 10 in 4 2/3 innings in a Mets 5-1 win. <span style="color: #000080;"><strong><a style="color: #000080;" href="https://metsmerizedonline.com/baty-leads-offense-in-5-1-win-over-boston/">Click here</a></strong></span> for the full-game recap!</span></p>

<p>During a steal of third base in the first inning of the Miami Marlins and New York Mets&#8217; game Sunday afternoon, Mets&#8217; outfielder <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/martest01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-09_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Starling Marte</a></strong> left the game. He was able to finish out the frame, but was removed in between innings. Marte slid head-first into third and his head collided with <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/segurje01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-09_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jean Segura</a></strong>&#8216;s lower half. The collision, of course, also put pressure on Marte&#8217;s neck. It also temporarily broke the sun glasses Marte was sporting.</p>
<p>Marte, who was batting second in the order, crushed a one-out double to left field. The ball left the bat at nearly 100 mph and the speedy right fielder found himself on second base. With <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lindofr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-09_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Francisco Lindor</a></strong> at the plate, Marte attempted the steal just moments later. Starling just beat the nice throw by Marlins&#8217; catcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/forteni01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-09_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Nick Fortes</a></strong>, but paid the price as he slid head-first into Segura&#8217;s lower half.</p>
<p>As mentioned above, it is encouraging that Marte remained in the game to finish out the inning. After he was removed, per the SNY broadcast, he was still seen in the dugout with the team, though, stretching his neck.</p>
<p>The Mets announced during the fourth inning that Marte was diagnosed with a neck strain. The team is labeling him as day-to-day.</p>

The left-hander only pitched one clean inning and allowed multiple base runners to reach in four innings, but he was able to keep the Marlins at bay for the most part.</p>
<p>Peterson had Marlins lead-off man <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/arraelu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-31_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><strong>Luis Arraez</strong></a> in an 0-2 hole to start his night, but after narrowly missing on a slider, Peterson ended up issuing a walk. He then induced a double-play from <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/segurje01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-31_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><strong>Jean Segura</strong></a>, which was aided by a slick diving stop by <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alonspe01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-31_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Pete Alonso</a></strong>. After <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/martest01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-31_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><strong>Starling Marte</strong></a> misplayed <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=coopega03,cooper007gar&amp;search=Garrett+Cooper&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-31_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><strong>Garrett Cooper</strong></a>&#8216;s shallow fly ball into a triple, Peterson fielded a hard comebacker off the bat of <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chishja01.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jazz Chisholm Jr.</a></strong> for the third out.</p>
<p>Peterson surrendered a lead-off homer to <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/solerjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-31_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><strong>Jorge Soler</strong></a> on his first pitch of the second inning, and back-to-back singles by <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gourryu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-31_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Yuli Gurriel</a></strong> and <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/forteni01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-31_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><strong>Nick Fortes</strong></a> put the Marlins in business with one out. Peterson was able to escape though, striking out <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bertijo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-31_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jon Berti</a></strong> on a slider and getting Arraez to ground out to Alonso.</p>
<p>There was a lot to prove for Peterson as a starter heading into this game, and indeed into the 2023 season, and his first outing of the year was a real grind from start to finish with both highs and lows. However, rather than worry about what has come before, Peterson stressed that he&#8217;s just focused on helping the Mets to win right now.</p>
<p>&#8220;I mean, I&#8217;m not thinking about previous years and I&#8217;m not thinking about anything,&#8221; Peterson said after the game. &#8220;I was told I was going to start this game and that&#8217;s been my whole focus and it&#8217;s going to be my focus. Every day is getting ready for the next one. I want to contribute and help this team win. That&#8217;s my main goal and focus.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Mets&#8217; defense helped Peterson out again in the third inning. With Cooper on first and two out, Soler hit a scorching line drive, but <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lindofr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-31_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><strong>Francisco Lindor</strong></a> made a leaping grab to save a run. Soler&#8217;s liner was hit 106.5 miles per hour and had an expected batting average of .900, which was the highest for either side in the game. Peterson was also bailed out thanks to great plays from<strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcneije01.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Jeff McNeil</a></strong> and Alonso.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yeah, I mean the defense was outstanding,&#8221; Peterson said. &#8220;It&#8217;s nice to pitch when balls are hit, guys are there and they&#8217;re going to make plays and they did a hell of a job. I felt it just came down to being able to use all my pitches, at certain points I was able to throw everything out when I needed to and get out of some of those things. It was just mixing it up and using all of my weapons.&#8221;</p>
<p>After a 1-2-3 fourth inning, Peterson immediately found trouble in the bottom of the fifth, allowing singles to Berti and Arraez. After striking out Segura, Cooper hit a ground ball that deflected off Alonso&#8217;s glove, but McNeil scrambled after the ball and threw Berti out trying to score from second. Peterson retired Chisholm on a grounder to Alonso, ending his evening. Despite allowing eight hits, Peterson kept the Marlins to just one run in his five innings, striking out five and walking only one.</p>
<p>Peterson&#8217;s fastball topped out at 96.1 MPH and averaged just over 93 MPH on the night, which is almost directly in line with his season average from a year ago. However, he registered just two swings and misses on his fastballs. On the other hand, Peterson threw 28 sliders and registered six whiffs on 14 swings. His slider also averaged 96 more RPM than it did last year.</p>
<p>&#8220;I liked that he only had one walk, that&#8217;s probably why he was able to survive,&#8221; <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/showabu99.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-31_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><strong>Buck Showalter</strong></a> said <strong><a href="https://twitter.com/SNYtv/status/1641971021161832449?s=20">after the game.</a></strong> &#8220;If he stays in the strike zone, he&#8217;s got good enough stuff to compete up here every time out.&#8221;</p>
<p>While it may not have been the prettiest start, Peterson did a good job staying composed and made big pitches when he needed to in clutch moments. With the Mets down a couple of starters, he has a big role to play in the team&#8217;s rotation. His next start is slated for Wednesday afternoon against the Brewers.</p>

<p>Up next on the rankings is third base. With only one true standout, the top spot on this list was pretty easy to assign but the middle three can fluctuate very easily. Between prospect promotions and free agency additions this list could have three new faces at this time next year. But for now here&#8217;s how the position shakes out for 2023.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center">5. <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/candeje01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-01-30_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jeimer Candelario</a>, WSH</h2>
<p>The Washington Nationals big free agent acquisition this offseason is coming off the worst season of his career. Now 29 years old, Candelario has played for the Cubs and Tigers as part of his seven year MLB career. Candelario led baseball with 42 doubles in 2021 while hitting .271/.351/.442 and flirted with a .300 batting average in the abbreviated 2020 season. Last year with the Tigers, Candelario batted .217/.272/.361 in 124 games. Steamer projects Candelario for 1.5 WAR this season, 27th most among third basemen. Additionally Steamer has his batting line at .240/.312/.404. Candelario is a negative defender at third base, finishing 2022 with a -6 outs above average, ranking in the eighth percentile. It&#8217;s likely <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kieboca01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-01-30_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><strong>Carter Kieboom</strong></a> or <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/downsje01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-01-30_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><strong>Jeter Downs</strong></a> finishes the season as their third baseman.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center">4. <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/escobed01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-01-30_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Eduardo Escobar</a>, NYM</h2>
<p>It&#8217;s unknown how much playing time Escobar will actually receive in 2023 but with him being the incumbent we&#8217;ll rank the NL East as him being the starter over <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/batybr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-01-30_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><strong>Brett Baty</strong></a><strong>.</strong> Escobar entered 2022 off an All-Star season but couldn&#8217;t replicate the success the same way. Escobar wasn&#8217;t far off from his 2021 season &#8211; 109 OPS+ vs. 106 OPS+ &#8211; but his best days do appear behind him. Projections for Esobar range due to games played. Steamer has Escobar at 109 games while The BAT has him playing in 73. Either way he should be around a 1.1 WAR player with a league-average bat. ZiPS projections heavily favor the Mets prospect over Escobar this season. Baty is estimated for a .253/.331/.424 slash line with 2.9 fWAR while Escobar is .232/.292/.417 with 1.5 WAR. Escobar is projected for 80 more plate appearances as well. If Baty is the starter and produces to that point he could jump up the rankings to No. 2 in the NL East.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center">3. <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bohmal01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-01-30_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Alec Bohm</a>, PHI</h2>
<p>Alec Bohm was the second worst defender at third base in baseball but his bat will push him above Escobar in these rankings. Last season, Bohm was in the fourth percentile in outs above average with -9 at the hot corner. Still, Bohm&#8217;s bat added to a deadly Philadelphia lineup with an expected batting average in the 98th percentile at .290. Bohm&#8217;s actual batting average in 2022 was .280, indicating he can reach new heights in his fourth season. Steamer projects Bohm as the 16th best third baseman next season with 2.6 WAR with a .272/.324/.416 slash line. ZiPS has Bohm worse than Baty with a 1.5 WAR and a sub-100 OPS+.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center">2. <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/segurje01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-01-30_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jean Segura</a>, MIA</h2>
<p>Segura tops the list of middle-of-the-pack third basemen mainly because of all the problems he&#8217;s caused against the Mets over the years. Segura is making the full-time transition from second base to third base in Miami and projects to be just fine after patrolling second and shortstop throughout his career. Segura&#8217;s offensive profile isn&#8217;t anything exciting with Steamer putting him at a .274/.331/.393 slash line and a 2.9 WAR . ZiPS is further down on Segura with a 2.0 WAR but a similar slash of .271/.329/.387.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center">1. <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rileyau01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-01-30_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Austin Riley</a>, ATL</h2>
<p>A legitimate stud and probably the best position player on the Braves next season, Riley is the clear-cut choice for best third baseman in the NL East. Steamer has Riley as the sixth-best third basemen in baseball next season with a 4.4 WAR and a .274/.343/.512 slash line. Riley, like the rest of the NL East, is a poor defender, but he does criminal things to baseballs. In 2022 he was in the 96th percentile of average exit velocity, 97th max exit velocity, 95th hard hit percentage, and 96th barrel percentage. Only 26 when the season starts the All-Star and Silver Slugger should remain atop this group for years to come barring a Baty breakout or a <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/machama01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=metsmerizedonline.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-01-30_br" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><strong>Manny Machado</strong></a> free agent signing.</p>

<p>The New York Mets (79-44) were looking to end their season series against the Philadelphia Phillies (66-55) with yet another series win. At Citizens Bank Park on Sunday afternoon, one that included a rain delay, the Mets emerged victorious thanks to a bonkers 10-9 victory. The game featured deficits of 4-0, 7-4, and 8-7, but the Mets kept the course and captured another series victory thanks to a huge two home run day from <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/canhama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Mark Canha</a></strong>.</p>
<p>With the win in New York&#8217;s final game of the season against Philadelphia, the Mets ended the season with a very impressive 14-5 record against the Phillies this year. The victory also improves the Mets&#8217; NL East lead to 4.0 games over Atlanta.</p>
<p>It was not all sunshine for the Mets, as the struggles for <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=butto-000jos&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">José Butto</a></strong> in his major-league debut started early. He allowed a lead-off hit, then a walk which led to an <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bohmal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Alec Bohm</a></strong> three-run home run. The damage was not done there, as three more hits in the inning resulted in another run. Philadelphia led 4-0 after the first inning.</p>
<p>The Mets got right back into the ballgame in the second inning. Thanks in large part to the lackadaisical Phillies&#8217; defense, New York scored two runs in the inning. The Mets only had one hit in the inning (<strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=perezmi03,perez-011mic,perez-010mic&amp;search=Michael+Perez&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Michael Perez</a></strong> RBI single), though an <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bohmal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Alec Bohm</a></strong> error, a <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/z/zimmebr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Bradley Zimmer</a></strong> error, and a dropped ball at the plate by <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/realmjt01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">J.T. Realmuto</a></strong> facilitated the offense. The score was 4-2 Phillies after an inning-and-a-half.</p>
<p>The Mets continued to trim the deficit in the next inning. <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/vogelda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Daniel Vogelbach</a></strong> ripped a double down the line which brought home <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/martest01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Starling Marte</a></strong>. For the third-consecutive inning, the Mets scored once again in the fourth. After Perez and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nimmobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Brandon Nimmo</a></strong> walked, Marte drove Perez home via a single hit up the middle. Though, the Mets left two more on base as the game was now tied at four.</p>
<p><strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/showabu99.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Buck Showalter</a></strong> opted to have Butto continue for the fourth inning. After a lead-off single and a walk, Bohm hit his second three-run home run of the game. Just like that, the Phillies led the game by three runs. This was also Butto&#8217;s last inning of work. He allowed seven runs over four innings via nine hits. He struck out five batters.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true">

<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>There was a brief rain delay, which, apparently, is just what the Mets needed. After it subsided, in the seventh inning, following singles by Alonso and Vogelbach, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/canhama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Mark Canha</a></strong> hit a three-run home run to left field. In doing so, the ballgame was once again tied. A game in which the Mets trailed in 4-0, then 7-4.</p>
<p><strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=fisher000nat&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Nate Fisher</a></strong> was another Mets&#8217; pitcher to make his major-league debut in this game. He did terrific work as he pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. His 50 pitches were huge given the state of the Mets&#8217; bullpen and how much Butto struggled. If it was not for Canha, Fisher would have easily been the Mets&#8217; player of the game.</p>
<p>Once again, the Mets comeback was for not. <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/segurje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jean Segura</a></strong> led the eighth inning off with a home run. The line-drive shot was off <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/maytr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Trevor May</a></strong> as Segura worked a phenomenal long at-bat. This gave the Phillies an 8-7 lead.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true">

<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>As they have so often this season, the Mets answered right back. After a <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcneije01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jeff McNeil</a></strong> double, his third hit of the game, Canha did it once again. This time a two-run home run against <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/roberda08.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">David Robertson</a></strong>. This gave the Mets the lead, 9-8. Nimmo also tallied a solo home run in the inning to give the Mets a 10-8 lead headed to the bottom half of the ninth.</p>
<p>Edwin Díaz entered in the ninth inning. He was certainly not his best, as he gave up his first run since June. Though, he rebounded and struck out <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hallda02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Darick Hall</a></strong> to end the game stranding two baserunners. This was Díaz’s 28th save and arguably the biggest of the season.</p>

<h3><span style="color: #0000ff">Player of the Game: Mark Canha</span></h3>
<p>In a back-and-forth contest, there were several terrific performers. However, none loomed larger than what Mark Canha did at the plate. He tallied two huge home runs. The first coming in the seventh inning to tie the game. Then another in the ninth inning that set up the Mets for victory.</p>
<p>Canha&#8217;s play time has decreased since the acquisition of <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/naquity01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Tyler Naquin</a></strong>. However, he has not let that suffer his on-field performance. As the three-hit, five RBI, and two home run performance indicates.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #ff6600">On Deck</span></h3>
<p>The New York Mets head to the Bronx for a two-game set against the Yankees (74-48). Game one is slated for 7:05 P.M. ET. The projected pitching matchup is <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/scherma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Max Scherzer</a></strong> (2.15 ERA) versus <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/germado01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=referral" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Domingo German</a></strong> (4.45 ERA).</p>

<p>The two-time Cy Young Award winner brought the heat from the very start of the game to the very end. He started his night off with a strikeout of <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mccutan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Andrew McCutchen</a></strong> on a 99.5 mph fastball and ended his night with a strikeout of <strong><strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harpebr03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Bryce Harper</a></strong></strong> on a 100.1 mph fastball.</p>
<p>After starting the game off with a strikeout, deGrom followed by giving up a double to <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hoskirh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rhys Hoskins</a></strong>, which was immediately erased as Hoskins was tagged out trying to stretch a double into a triple. After a five-pitch walk to Harper, deGrom got out of the inning with a strikeout of <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/realmjt01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">J.T. Realmuto</a></strong>.</p>
<p>In the second inning, deGrom picked up his third strikeout of the game as he got <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bohmal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Alec Bohm</a> </strong>swinging. He stuck with his fastball against <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gregodi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Didi Gregorius</a></strong>, who was able to connect on a 102 mph four-seamer for a single. Gregorius was quickly erased as deGrom got <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/segurje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jean Segura</a></strong> to ground into a 6-4-3 double play.</p>
<p>DeGrom continued to roll in the third inning. He got <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/haselad01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Adam Haseley</a></strong> to fly out to left field for his first out. He followed that up with a four-pitch strikeout of <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=moorema02,moore-006mat,moore-005mat&amp;search=Matt+Moore&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Matt Moore</a></strong>. To start his second time through the order, deGrom gave up a sharp line drive single to McCutchen. However, that did not become a threat as he got Hoskins to ground out four pitches later.</p>
<p>Harper was able to draw another walk off deGrom to start the fourth, but that&#8217;s all deGrom went on to allow in the inning. He was able to retire the next three batters on five fastballs by getting them to line out, fly out and pop out.</p>
<p>DeGrom began the fifth inning sitting at 56 pitches. He continued his efficiency in the fifth as he needed only nine pitches to retire the side in order. He also picked up his fifth strikeout during the inning.</p>
<p>In typical fashion, deGrom got even better as the game progressed. After his first perfect inning in the fifth, he pieced together another 1-2-3 inning in the sixth.</p>
<p>He started the sixth off with one of his slowest fastballs of the night (97.3 mph) and decided to go to his slider for seven of his next nine pitches. His slider did not fail him as he got McCutchen to ground out and Hoskins to strike out (both with his slider), before ending his night with the aforementioned strikeout of Harper with his fastball.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

<p>DeGrom pitched six shutout innings and was taken out after only 77 pitches. He limited the Phillies to only three hits and two walks, while striking out seven.</p>
<p>Not only was deGrom sharp on the mound, but he was also sharp with the bat. He went 2-for-3 and helped his own cause by driving in the Mets&#8217; second run of the <strong><a title="For Openers, Mets Cough Up Lead Late in 5-3 Loss to Phils" href="https://metsmerizedonline.com/2021/04/for-openers-mets-cough-up-lead-late-in-5-3-loss-to-phils.html/">5-3 loss</a></strong>.</p>
<p>Mets fans have become conditioned to dominant deGrom starts that are squandered and Monday loss to the Phillies was no different.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/frazito01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Todd Frazier</a></strong> got the start at third base for the Mets on Friday night and reached a personal milestone in his MLB career, recording his 1,000th major league hit.</p>
<p>Frazier, 33, extended his arms out on a 2-1 pitch to just get the bat on the ball enough for it to go over <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/segurje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jean Segura</a></strong>&#8216;s head into left-center field, giving himself a single.</p>
<p>On the night, Frazier went 1-for-2 with a walk. He was actually responsible for starting two rallies in the game, getting on base to start the third and eighth innings. In the third, he scored on a <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcneije01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jeff McNeil</a></strong> RBI single. In the eighth, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/haggesa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sam Haggerty</a></strong> pinch-ran for Frazier after he walked and Haggerty scored on a <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alonspe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Pete Alonso</a></strong> RBI single.</p>
<p>With a crowded infield/outfield situation now after <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nimmobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Brandon Nimmo</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/canoro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Robinson Cano</a></strong> returned, Frazier&#8217;s playing time is one of the most in jeopardy with a reasonable, but not outstanding slash line of .235/.312/.420 to go along with 18 home runs and 59 RBI.</p>
<p>However, the team likes his defense at the hot corner where he has four defensive runs saved and a 1.0 UZR.</p>
<p>Since last Friday when the team was in Philadelphia, Frazier is 7-for-16 with two home runs, eight RBI, one double, three walks, and five runs scored.</p>
<p>That type of production going forward should keep him in the lineup most days if maintained given the fact that his defense at the hot corner is so strong. Even if he can&#8217;t maintain that, though, Frazier is a very useful piece as a pinch-hitter with power and a strong defensive replacement option late in games.  So essentially, if Frazier hits, he&#8217;ll play.</p>
<p>Congrats to Todd Frazier on his accomplishment!</p>

<p>Not even a day after WFAN&#8217;s Mike Francesa blasted everyone on the New York Mets from the players to <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/callami01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Mickey Callaway</a></strong> to Brodie Van Wagenen in an epic take-down, the Mets skipper braved an appearance with Francesa this afternoon.</p>
<p>Francesa pulled no punches after closer <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=diazed04,diazed03,diaz--005edw&amp;search=Edwin+Diaz&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Edwin Diaz</a></strong> allowed a three-run walkoff homerun to the Phillies&#8217; <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/segurje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jean Segura</a></strong>.</p>
<p>&#8220;Segura hits a shot. Home run. UNBELIEVABLE! So this guy comes in and gives up five runs. That sums it up. Fire all of &#8217;em. Don&#8217;t even bring him back to New York. Let the bus go the other way. Please. Tomorrow night let the &#8217;69 Mets take the field. They do a better job against the Braves. This is unbelievable. &#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;This is a disgrace. I can&#8217;t even believe it! You can&#8217;t lose this game! They stink so bad, you can&#8217;t even make it up. 37-45. You got to be kidding me. Get rid of all of them. They&#8217;re a bunch of jokers.&#8221;</p>
<p>You can listen to <a href="https://wfan.radio.com/articles/mike-francesa-rips-diaz-mets-live-they-blow-lead-phillies" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>the entire rant here</strong></a>.</p>
<p>During Callaway&#8217;s appearance on Mike&#8217;s Up, Francesa asked him to assess where the team is right now as they begin a weekend series with the first place Atlanta Braves.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re in a tough spot. It&#8217;s gonna take a miracle,&#8221; Callaway said. &#8216;But I&#8217;ve seen miracles before.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;We understand we&#8217;re in a very tough situation. It may take a miracle to get out of it. That&#8217;s happened before in Mets land. They&#8217;re celebrating the 50-year anniversary of it , and we&#8217;re hoping that that can happen again. We&#8217;re optimistic we can get this thing going.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Mets are 37-45 and 11 games back in the NL East, but they&#8217;ll need a lot more than a miracle to earn a playoff spot with the team 6.5 games out of the second wild card spot.</p>
<p>The bullpen has a 7.96 ERA in June, the worst mark in the major leagues, and they are the only team in the majors with more blown saves (20) than saves (18).</p>
<p>Edwin Diaz, who allowed just 17 runs in 73.1 innings last year, has already allowed 17 runs in 31 innings this year. He is 1-5 with a 4.94 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP and 16 saves in 20 chances.</p>

<p>According to Joel Sherman of the <strong><a href="https://twitter.com/Joelsherman1/status/1069700860291280901">NY Post</a></strong>, the Philadelphia Phillies have acquired shortstop <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/segurje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jean Segura</a></strong>, righty <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nicasju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Juan Nicasio</a></strong>, and lefty <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pazosja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">James Pazos</a></strong> from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=santaca01,santan006car,santan005car&amp;search=Carlos+Santana&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Carlos Santana</a> </strong>and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/crawfjp01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">J.P. Crawford</a></strong>.</p>
<p>Segura has been solid offensively the past couple of seasons. Over the past two years, his combined 7.2 offensive WAR is eleventh best amongst all middle infielders. He is also coming off a 2018 campaign in which he hit .304/.341/.415 with 10 home runs, 29 doubles, 91 runs, and 20 stolen bases.</p>
<p>Segura has four years remain and is owed $58 million under his current contract. He also has a $17 million team option for the 2023 season.</p>
<p>Nicasio has been a pretty reliable reliever during his eight year big league career. However, as Mariners manager <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/servasc01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Scott Servais</a></strong> put it Nicasio was a bit “unlucky” in 2018. He posted a 6.00 ERA, but averaged 11.5 K/9, and 1.1 BB/9 in 46 games. Nicasio is owed $9 million of his two year, $17 million deal in 2019.</p>
<p>Pazos is a 27-year old lefty from the University of San Diego. The Mariners acquired him from the Yankees prior to the 2017 season. Since then, he has been a phenomenal asset in the Seattle bullpen. Over 103 innings, Pazos has posted a 3.39 ERA with 110 strikeouts</p>
<p>In Crawford, the Mariners are acquiring a 24-year old former top prospect. During his time in Philly, Crawford never quite scratched his full potential. In 72 games across two big league seasons, he hit just .214/.333/.358 with three home runs, six doubles, and 12 RBI.</p>
<p>Santana is more a salary dump for the Phillies. Over the next two seasons, he is owed a combined $40 million in guaranteed money. In 2018, the 32-year old missed just one game and hit .229/.352/.414 with 28 doubles, 24 home runs, and 86 RBI.</p>
<p>As Sherman notes, by moving Santana the Phillies can now shift <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hoskirh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Rhys Hoskins</a></strong> to first where he is better and more comfortable defensively, thus opening up a spot in the outfield for a free agent.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-211929" src="https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/get-metsmerized-footer.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></p>
