Prior to Friday’s game against the Pirates, the Mets made a number of roster moves which can be found here. Of note, Griffin Canning was placed on the 60-day injured list while Mark Vientos was activated from the IL. One of the moves made, however, was the team decided to release former top prospect Alex Ramírez from Double-A.

Ramírez was once one of the Mets’ most promising prospects, particularly after the 2022 season when he posted a .782 OPS with 30 doubles, 11 home runs and 21 stolen bases across High-A and Double-A. His play had fallen off dramatically over the past few seasons, however, and he had just a .602 OPS in Double-A this year.

The Mets (48-35) dropped their series opener against the Pirates (33-50), 9-1. David Peterson had a second consecutive rough outing, while Juan Soto hit his 20th home run of the season.

The Mets announced on Friday that Griffin Canning underwent surgery for his ruptured Achilles. Canning will miss the rest of the season.

Geoff Pontes of Baseball America listed Mets prospect Jonah Tong in his article of 10 pitching prospects who had standout data for the month of June.

Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who currently leads the majors in home runs, has agreed to participate in this year’s Home Run Derby. He joins Ronald Acuña Jr., who will be the hometown participant, as the second known participant in the event.

Angels manager Ron Washington will not return to the team in 2025. It was announced last week that Washington would go on indefinite medical leave, and they have now announced that will extend through at least the end of the season.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, former Met J.D. Martinez currently has a non-guaranteed offer on the table from the Texas Rangers. Martinez has been working out in Miami in case the right deal comes along.

The MLB Draft League and Cape Cod League will play in an exhibition game against each other on Monday, June 30. Citi Field will host the game.

2024 REVIEW:

As has been the case over his Mets tenure, Lindor did not get off to a good start. He batted .032/.184/.032 with just one hit between March 28 to April 6. He did play at his expected form from April 7 to May 12, and by May 18, he was hitting .190/.265/.352 with just seven home runs and 26 RBIs. There was a point where Mets fans at Citi Field would give him an ovation as a sign of encouragement. Just like Philadelphia Phillies fans did with Trea Turner during his struggles in 2023.

He still provided good defense, and his leadership was second to none on the team. However, his offensive numbers were going to have to be better. Then, on May 18, before a game in Miami against the Marlins, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza decided to put Lindor in the leadoff spot, in an attempt to shake things up and jolt the offense. It paid off as Lindor and the Mets flourished.

From the moment Lindor was put in the leadoff spot, he truly kicked off what would become an MVP-caliber season and would carry the Mets to a magical season. Since that point, Lindor slashed .304/.374/.554 with a .928 OPS and 160 wRC+. He hit 26 home runs, 70 RBIs, 135 hits, 31 doubles, scored 82 runs, and walked 41 times during that span. He also stole 23 bases. Lindor finished the season with 33 home runs, 91 RBIs, 169 hits, 39 doubles, 56 walks, and 29 stolen bases. If not for a back injury at the end, Lindor would’ve had another 30/30/30 year as he fell one stolen base shy of the milestone. Lindor hit 25+ home runs and 25+ doubles while driving in 90+ RBIs for the third consecutive season.

The Mets’ turning point not only occurred when Lindor stepped up as the leadoff man but when his leadership shined. After a 10-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers that saw reliever Jorge López throw his glove into the stands after being ejected from the game, Lindor called a team meeting. At the time, the Mets were 22-33. However, after Lindor called the meeting, the Mets got hot and turned their season around, culminating on a Monday doubleheader afternoon in Atlanta and a trip to the postseason.

Lindor’s clutch factor this season was something the Mets hadn’t seen since Yoenis Céspedes in 2015 during their run to the playoffs and World Series. Lindor had plenty of big hits but none more significant than in game 161 to clinch the Mets a Wild Card berth. The Mets entered the final day against the Atlanta Braves with a simple goal, win and in. New York was down 3-0 but scored six runs in the top of the eighth to go up 6-3. In the bottom half, the Braves tallied four runs, and the Mets were down 7-6 entering the top of the ninth. With their playoff hopes on the line and Starling Marte on base, Lindor hit a two-run home run that catapulted the Mets to an 8-7 win and a trip to the playoffs.

In the postseason, while Mark Vientos and Pete Alonso mostly took over the offensive production, Lindor was still in the center of action. In Game 3 of the Wild Card Series, down 2-0 in the top of the ninth, Lindor drew a leadoff walk. That helped set the stage for Alonso’s three-run home run to win the series. In the top of the ninth in Game 2 of the NLDS and down 6-4, Lindor worked a one-out single followed by a Vientos two-run home run to tie the game. Lindor’s crowning playoff moment occurred in Game 4 of the NLDS with a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to lead the Mets to a 4-1 win and their first trip to the NLCS since 2015. That grand slam also resulted in the Mets’ first clinch at home since 2000 and the first at Citi Field.

While Lindor finished 2021 on a positive note and put up solid seasons in 2022 and 2023, this season was his best as a Met. On an offense that saw inconsistencies from Alonso and Nimmo, struggles from Jeff McNeil, Francisco Alvarez, and J.D. Martinez, and Marte only playing 94 games, Lindor was the one consistent presence in the lineup. With his bat, glove, and leadership, he put the team on his back (an injured back, too) and carried them farther than many expected. He may not win the National League MVP Award, but he was without a question the Mets’ MVP in 2024. Lindor was the biggest reason for the ride they went on.

2025 OVERVIEW

Lindor will be 31 next year, but he is still in the prime of his career. He will enter his fifth season as a Met and the fourth year of his 10-year, $341 million contract he signed in 2021.

Lindor remains the one constant the team can rely on heading into next year. Especially with the questions surrounding Alonso’s free agency. Players like Nimmo and Alvarez will look for bounce-back seasons as well. Vientos will enter his second full season and looks to avoid the sophomore regression that plagued Alvarez. Looking around MLB and in the NL East, Lindor could use another consistent bat to help him. Even if he gets off to another slow start, Lindor has proven he’ll still be a productive offensive player by the end of the season.

His defense at shortstop will still be as elite as any player in MLB. His glove and command on the diamond will be something to fall back on even if he’s struggling offensively. Lindor will be a factor for 2025 and more years to come as New York looks to build off their success this season. Overall, this is Lindor’s team, and David Stearns will build the 2025 club around him.

After a series split in Los Angeles, your New York Metropolitans have returned to Citi Field for three in Queens. Probable pitchers for today and tomorrow have been announced, with the Mets’ Luis Severino (11-7, 3.91 ERA in regular season) taking the ball today against the Dodgers’ Walker Buehler (1-6, 5.38 ERA). Jose Quintana and Yoshinobu Yamamoto will face off Wednesday. 

Severino and Buehler both haven’t been at their best lately. Severino has posted a 4.50 ERA this postseason, while Buehler allowed six runs in five innings during his lone start. Severino, though, doesn’t seem worried. When asked about his preparation for today, he said, “Gonna go through some videos…play a little video games and that’ll be it.” The right-hander was also tasked with selecting today’s Mets jerseys. He picked the black ones. “I like black,” Severino said. 

In separate news, manager Carlos Mendoza announced that “there’s a good chance” that veteran J.D. Martinez starts today at designated hitter against the right-handed Buehler. This postseason, Martinez has slapped four singles in 14 at bats, driving in three. Martinez would take a start from Jesse Winker, who has a 1.076 OPS in 15 at-bats during the playoffs.

NLCS Game 1 between the Mets and Dodgers averaged 8,264,000 viewers, the most watched LCS Game 1 since 2009’s Angels-Yankees clash. It’s the most streamed NLCS Game 1 in Fox Sports history.

Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports that Giants pitching coach Brian Price will be stepping down. Price worked as a pitching coach for several years in the early 2000s before retiring. He then returned to coaching for the 2024 season.

On Tuesday, the Guardians replaced Alex Cobb on their roster with right-hander Ben Lively. Cobb had been acquired at the Trade Deadline, but he’s been battling back injuries for the entirety of the year, limiting him to three starts. He hasn’t been sharp this postseason, pitching just 5 ⅔ innings in two starts, allowing five earned runs.

Dodgers beat writer Bill Plunkett asked Clayton Kershaw about his plans for 2025, and if perhaps he’d decline his $10 million player option. “I’m going to be a Dodger,” the southpaw replied.

Edwin Díaz Blows Another One

To put it simply, Edwin Díaz has had a season to forget. From his early season struggles, especially in May. To his injury stint on the IL. His 10-game suspension. Lost in all of it, though, was that it seemed like he bounced back. Before Sunday’s loss in San Diego, he had an ERA of 1.06 in his last eighteen appearances. His confidence looked better. However, his last two appearances will not bestow confidence upon him in these crucial games. Manager Carlos Mendoza went to him on Wednesday night for a 4-out save, but Díaz could not throw a strike. It is a problem for all Mets pitchers not named Sean Manaea and David Peterson. He walked Pavin Smith and Geraldo Perdomo. His fastball was missing wide, and his command was way off. With the bases loaded for Corbin Carroll, just like on Sunday against Jackson Merrill, he hung a slider down the middle as Carroll hit one out for a grand slam. 

We can talk about his lack of usage or any rhythm that he’s lacking because of it, but the bottom line is he has to come through in these spots. Especially at this point in the season. Mendoza called upon him to get a 4-out save, with no Dedniel Núñez available (more on that later), and he didn’t come through. Closers are like kickers in football. It’s all about their confidence. If Díaz’s confidence is not there, then the Mets and Díaz himself have a problem. 

Núñez Day-To-Day

Núñez just returned to the Mets bullpen this past Saturday and looked great. Unfortunately, it seems like he’s still hurt. After Wednesday’s loss, Mendoza was asked about Núñez, and he said that Núñez was “not recovering well” after his outing on Saturday. Mendoza said he is being reevaluated and another stint on the injured list is possible. If the Mets lose Núñez again, it will be a brutal blow to a bullpen that needs him, thanks to the uncertainty of Díaz and the recent struggles of José Buttó.

Offense Battles Back

After an ineffective outing from Luis Severino and down 4-0, the Mets offense showed some life after getting no-hit through the first four innings. In the 5th, after a walk by Brandon Nimmo, J.D. Martinez drove him in with a double. An RBI single by Francisco Alvarez cut the lead to 4-2. Then Harrison Bader launched a two-run homer to tie the game. One inning later, Starling Marte kicked it off with a single and Pete Alonso drove him in on a sacrifice fly thanks to a great slide at home from Marte. That gave the Mets a 5-4 lead. It was a valiant effort by New York’s offense, but it was all for nothing. 

Player Of The Game: Harrison Bader

Bader launched his second home run in his last three games. It was his 10th home run of the season.

On Deck:

The Mets will have to turn the page quickly on Thursday afternoon with David Peterson taking the mound for New York against Ryne Nelson of the Diamondbacks. The game will be telecast live on SNY at 3:40 p.m. EDT and broadcast on WCBS 880.

Brazobán Can’t Get The Last Out

Making his second appearance as a Met, Brazobán started off the seventh inning strong. He struck out Jo Adell and Matt Thaiss to begin the frame, but that last out proved to be too much to get. He gave up a single to Michael Stefanic, followed by a walk to Nolan Schanuel, and then a three-run home run to Zach Neto to give the Angels a 5-4 lead. A bad cutter to Neto doomed Brazobán.

That home run would be too much for the Mets to overcome. A single to Logan O’Hoppe right after would end Brazobán’s outing. After an encouraging first impression against the Minnesota Twins, the new Mets acquisition gave the team an all too familiar feeling out of the bullpen. 

Solid Outing For Peterson

On a positive note, after struggling against the Atlanta Braves, David Peterson had a good bounceback day. He allowed five hits, two earned runs, one walk and four strikeouts in six innings. He was taken out after just 82 pitches. He struggled with command early but was able to settle in. With Kodai Senga out for the season and Chrisitan Scott on the injured list, they’ll need Peterson to be a steady presence in the rotation. Good outings from Paul Blackburn and Peterson in the last two games are encouraging for the Mets.

Player Of The Game: J.D. Martinez

With the Mets down 2-0 in the top of the seventh inning, Martinez came up to the plate with the bases loaded. He took a 2-0 sinker over the wall in left-center for a grand slam at a 105.9 exit velocity. It was Martinez’s second grand slam in the last two weeks.

On Deck

The Mets will send Jose Quintana to the mound on Sunday, matching up against the Angels’ Griffin Canning. The game will be telecast locally on SNY at 4:07 p.m. ET and broadcast on WCBS 880.

Many of you woke up on Tuesday yearning to add an ace like Jack Flaherty or Blake Snell or an elite closer like Tanner Scott.

President of baseball operations David Stearns ended the day with a more conservative haul, adding a trio of pitchers to supplement the current team.

The Mets added Oakland A’s starter Paul Blackburn, as well as relievers Tyler Zuber from the Tampa Bay Rays and Huascar Brazobán from the Miami Marlins. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Mets DFA’d pitcher Ty Adcock and catcher Logan Porter.

The Mets did not part ways with a single prospect in the top-25 of Michael Mayer’s top-50. The team gave up pitcher Kade Morris (No. 27) for Blackburn, another arm in Paul Gervase (No. 34) to land Zuber and infielder Wilfredo Lara (No. 35) to acquire Brazobán.

Tylor Megill took the mound in game three of the series against Atlanta. While he wasn’t terrible, he was hurt by the long ball. The Mets offense was shut out for the eighth time this season and couldn’t muster anything off Braves starter Spencer Schwellenbach.

Home Runs Hurt Megill

On the surface, you would probably take outings like these from a No. 5 starter like Megill. On the day, he went 6 innings with 4 strikeouts and allowed 4 earned runs. Megill held the Braves through the first three innings. He also wasn’t helped by a lack of offense on this day. However, the home runs hurt him once again. In the top of the 4th in a scoreless game, he gave up back-to-back home runs to Marcell Ozuna and Matt Olson. That gave Atlanta a 2-0 lead.

In the 5th, Megill walked Sean Murphy, and Orlando Arcia drove him in on a single down the left field line. In the 7th, Megill allowed his third home run of the day to Eddie Rosario who made it 4-0 Braves. A second walk to Murphy after that would end Megill’s outing, increasing his ERA to 5.20. The outing was an improvement for Megill, who struggled a lot before being sent down, but some of his pitches didn’t break, which resulted in the home runs. Megill has an opportunity now with the injuries to Senga and Christian Scott, but the Mets do need another starter.

Mets Offense Goes Cold 

As good as the Mets offense has been lately, their form from earlier this season reared its head on Saturday. New York’s offense was shut out again and had no answers for Schwellenbach, who struck out 11 Mets batters. New York only notched four hits (Jeff McNeil, Pete Alonso, Luis Torrens, and Brandon Nimmo). However, they also struck out 14 times as a team to Braves pitching. J.D. Martinez was responsible for four the 14 strikeouts, cooling off after his big game on Friday. Mark Vientos also struck out three times. Alonso struck out twice.

Player Of The Game: Danny Young

It was a solid day for Danny Young as he went two innings in relief of Megill and had five strikeouts. Young’s ERA is now 3.50.

On Deck

On Sunday, the Mets will try again to take this four-game series from the Braves as they send David Peterson to the mound. He will match up against Braves 2024 All-Star right-hander Reynaldo López. The game will be telecast live on WPIX at 1:40 p.m. EDT and broadcast on WCBS 880 radio.

J.D. Martinez’s Big Afternoon

Martinez has been exactly what the Mets have been hoping for out of the designated hitter position, not only with his bat but with his leadership as well. As of late, he has been sizzling hot, and he continued that streak with a two-home run performance against the Padres. The first came in the bottom of the 4th inning to give New York a 3-0 lead. Then, after the Padres cut the lead to 3-1 after a Jackson Merrill home run, Martinez would add to the Mets lead with his second home run of the night on a solo blast. Two home runs, both over the right-center field wall of Citi Field. Martinez added his third hit of the afternoon with a single up the middle. 

For the second day in a row, Brandon Nimmo showed signs of snapping out of his slump. Nimmo drove in two RBIs on Saturday. A double in the 4th inning to put the Mets up 1-0 and an insurance run in the bottom of the 9th inning with an RBI single. Francisco Lindor got on base three times with two walks, a stolen base, and a 2-out double that started the Mets’ three-run 4th inning.

Much Needed Outing For Quintana

In a starting rotation that needs players to step up, Quintana was at the top of the list. On Saturday, he posted his best outing since April 28th against the St. Louis Cardinals. He pitched six solid innings to earn the win, just his second of the season, was efficient with his location, and struck out six Padres. The Merrill home run was the only blemish for Quintana. 

Dedniel Núñez Stays Hot

When Edwin Díaz returned from the injured list, the Mets had to make a decision. To send either Dedniel Núñez or Danny Young down. It was a tough decision because both have been bright spots in the bullpen. The Mets decided to stick with Núñez, and he performed well again on Saturday. He pitched two shutout innings in the 7th and 8th with two strikeouts. His ERA is now down to 2.04. He earned his chance to stay in the big leagues and he took advantage of it on Saturday.

Player Of The Game: J.D. Martinez

Shocking. Martinez is the player of the game again for the Mets. Martinez has carried the Mets over the past couple of days and he did so on Saturday with two home runs, two walks, three RBIs, and three hits.

According to Peter Botte of the New York Times, Brandon Nimmo has undergone concussion testing during his recent struggles at the plate. Nimmo was hit in the head by a pitch on May 24, around the same time his slump started.

Nimmo has reiterated that he doesn’t have any symptoms, but Mets manager Carlos Mendoza experienced a similar situation last year when Anthony Rizzo had an undiagnosed concussion for months and struggled at the plate. Whatever the issue with Nimmo is, the Mets are hoping both he and they can figure it out during a critical stretch of games ahead.

That was all the Mets needed, as Sean Manaea and company held the Padres to just one run. Edwin Díaz shut the door for his first save in over a month.

Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reported that the Blue Jays have designated former Met Daniel Vogelbach for assignment. The team’s no. 6 prospect Addison Barger was recalled from Triple-A. Vogelbach had a .578 OPS in 31 games for Toronto this year.

Astros GM Dana Brown announced that the team released former MVP José Abreu. Abreu was in the midst of a brutal season for Houston, recording a .124/.167/.195/.361 slash in 35 games. Abreu had stints in rookie ball and Triple-A to try to find his rhythm, but the Astros are deciding to cut ties now.

The Rays released first baseman Harold Ramírez, after he was DFA’d last week. Ramírez had a .589 OPS with Tampa Bay in 48 games this season.

On This Date in Mets History

1977: The most infamous trade in Mets history, the “Midnight Massacre,” occurred on this date 47 years ago. Tom Seaver, at the time a nine-time All-Star, three-time Cy Young Award winner, and 1969 World Series champion, was traded to the Reds for Doug Flynn, Pat Zachry, Steve Henderson, and Dan Norman.

1983: Six years after the worst trade in franchise history, the Mets made one of their best. General manager Frank Cashen traded relievers Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey to the Cardinals for Keith Hernandez. Hernandez was a World Series winner, a five-time Gold Glover, and a co-MVP winner at the time of the trade. Hernandez would lead the Mets to their second World Series victory in 1986 and became the first captain in Mets history the following year.

The Offense Has A Big Night

As previously mentioned, the Mets fell behind early when starter Luis Severino gave up three earned runs in the top of the first inning, however the offense would strike back in the bottom half of the frame against Arizona starter Jordan Montgomery. Francisco Lindor led off with a walk before Brandon Nimmo hit a double to advance him to third. After a J.D. Martinez walk, Marte brought them all home with a triple to left center field wall that tied the game. Vientos, who became the permanent third baseman after Brett Baty was sent to Triple-A Syracuse, later drove in Marte with an RBI single that give New York the lead.

In the bottom of the second, Tomás Nido opened the action with a double before Lindor drove him in with a double off the right field wall, which extended Lindor’s hitting streak to 10 games and made it 5-3 Mets. Pete Alonso came through with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth that scored Nido while Marte and Vientos added on with a pair of RBIs later in the inning. The Mets led 8-4 after four innings.

Martinez joined in on the offensive parade with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 10-5, which would end up being the deciding factor in the game. Overall, the offense tallied 10 runs on 14 hits, and most importantly, went 6-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

Luis Severino Battled Through Shaky Outing 

Severino took the mound for the Mets on Friday night coming off a brilliant outing against the San Francisco Giants. He didn’t have his best stuff on this day, though, as Arizona jumped on his fastball early for a pair of first inning hits while taking a 3-0 lead. Severino settled in from there and allowed just one run over the next four innings as he worked his way into the sixth. However, a solo home run by Eugenio Suárez with one out in the sixth ended Severino’s night. His velocity picked up in the fifth inning, but it wasn’t there consistently throughout the night.

Severino went 5 1/3 innings, struck out 4 and allowed five runs (four of them earned) on six hits as he was able to battle and earn his third win of the season.

Bullpen Survives

The Mets’ bullpen is a jumbled mess at the moment and Friday night showed that in all its glory. It started off well after Dedniel Núñez and Jake Diekman shut down the Diamondbacks in the sixth and seventh innings. Then, Reid-Foley stepped up with a clean eighth inning as well.

With the Mets up 10-5 heading into the top of the ninth, it was up to Reid-Foley to hold it. As we know with the 2024 Mets, however, no lead is safe. With one out, he gave up an infield single and a walk before he was taken out for Garrett. On his first pitch, Garrett retired Ketel Marte for the second out of the frame. On Garrett’s next pitch, Joc Pederson rocketed a three-run home run into the Coca-Cola corner to make 10-8 Mets. Garrett’s next offering to Christian Walker? Blasted into left field for a home run as it became 10-9 Mets and memories of blown leads came flame back.

With the tying run represented by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. as the next batter, Garrett did not throw a single pitch in the zone but still struck him swinging out on a splitter as the Mets narrowly escaped with the win.

Player Of The Game: Starling Marte

Marte is coming along as he recorded another multi-hit game on Friday night while notching four RBIs. His big three-run triple in the first tied the game in the first inning and got the wheels turning for the Mets’ offense.

On Deck

It’s Darryl Strawberry day on Saturday as the Mets send Sean Manaea to the mound, who will be opposed by Blake Walston of the Diamondbacks. The game will be televised locally on SNY at 4:10 p.m. EDT. The festivities are set to begin at 3:30 p.m. as Strawberry will have his No. 18 retired by the club.
