All three outlets generally agree that the Marlins have a middle-of-the-road farm system. Not great, not awful. But for a team that lost 100 games in 2024 and traded away some of its best talent in the process, a middle-of-the-road farm system doesn’t inspire much confidence that things will be getting better for the Fish soon.

TOP PLAYERS TO KNOW

Miami’s farm system is headlined by Thomas White and Noble Meyer, a pair of 6-foot-5 2023 first-round prep arms, and Starlyn Caba, a teenage infielder acquired via trade just over one month ago.

White, ranked No. 41 by Pipeline and No. 33 by Baseball America in each publication’s recently released top 100 prospects lists for 2025, is Maimi’s consensus top prospect. The No. 35 pick in 2023 who signed for well above slot value is an exciting left-handed arm who features a power fastball that sits in the mid-90s and tops out in the 97-to-98 range, a slider that Pipeline has as a 65-grade pitch, and a changeup that both Pipeline and Baseball America have as a third above-average pitch. He spent last season split between Single-A and High-A and had success at both levels, putting up a 2.81 ERA with 120 strikeouts in 21 starts and 98 innings pitched. His command is still a work in progress, but his stuff is evident. He’s 20, and won’t turn 21 until late September, so he’s likely a few years out at the earliest, but White is firmly entrenched as one of the best pitching prospects in baseball.

Meyer, picked 25 spots before White and signed for $400,000 more than his southpaw counterpart in a below-slot deal, is another 20-year-old arm with plus stuff and questionable command. His fastball, curveball, slider and changeup all have average or above-average grades on Pipeline, with the slider being his highest-graded pitch. Like White, he spent his 2024 season split between Single-A and High-A, and while he handled the lower level well he struggled a bit once he was promoted. Across both levels, Meyer finished the year with a 4.01 ERA with 85 strikeouts in 19 games and 74 innings pitched. He’s another arm who’s not in play for 2025, but he could be part of a formidable young top-of-the-rotation with White and 21-year-old Eury Pérez in a few years.

The Marlins traded future Met Starling Marte to the Oakland Athletics for Jesús Luzardo in 2021, and then traded Luzardo to the Philadelphia Phillies this offseason for a package headlined by 19-year-old infielder Starlyn Caba. A 5-foot-9 switch hitter, Caba is a premier defender, with Pipeline, writing that “some evaluators believe that Caba is the top defender in the Minors and give him top-of-the-scale 80 grades for his shortstop defense.” Pipeline doesn’t quite give him the elusive 80 grade for his defense—they give him a still elite 70—but Baseball America and FanGraphs do.

As for his bat, he’s never going to be a slugger, but his bat-to-ball skills and plate discipline are believed to be above average. He made it as high as Single-A last season, and while he struggled at the plate once he got there, he’s still young. He’ll be 19 for the 2025 season and is likely very far from the bigs, but Caba could be the future at shortstop in Miami if his bat allows it.

Those three are Miami’s best prospects, but thanks to the sell-off they conducted in 2024 they’re far from the only notable ones.

Digging Into the System

In May, the Marlins traded Luis Arráez to the San Diego Padres for OF Dillon Head, RHP Woo-Suk Go, OF Jakob Marsee and 1B/OF Nathan Martorella. Head, San Diego’s first-round pick in 2023, was the headliner package sent to Miami. He has elite speed, but injured his hip shortly after the trade and missed the rest of the year. If he can play a full season in 2025, it’ll be the first opportunity to see Head on the field for an extended period of time since he was drafted.

The full sell-off came about two months later at the trade deadline. A week before the deadline, the Marlins dealt A.J. Puk to the Arizona Diamondbacks for 1B /3B Deyvison De Los Santos and OF Andrew Pintar. De Los Santos is probably a top-10 organizational prospect and his 40 home runs (albeit with 144 strikeouts to just 34 walks) in 137 games between Double-A and Triple-A show why. Pintar could be interesting too after he tore up High-A as a 22-year-old in 2024 but struggled when moved up to Double-A.

Then came deadline day. The Marlins and Padres paired up again, this time with Miami sending Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing to San Diego for RHP Adam Mazur, 2B Jay Beshears, LHP Robby Snelling and 3B Graham Pauley. This was a monster return for Scott, who ended up being a Padre for all of two months before heading a few hours north to join the Dodgers in free agency.

Snelling was one of the breakout pitching prospects from the 2023 season when he had a sub-2 ERA in over 100 innings, but struggled in 2024 and had an ERA of 6.01 in Double-A with the Padres before the trade. He was much better after the trade, with his ERA after he got to the Marlins ending up at just under four. He even finished the year out with one start at Triple-A, going six strong innings with just one run allowed.

That wasn’t even all for Miami, also sending Jazz Chisholm Jr., who at that time was probably their face of the franchise, to the New York Yankees for C Agustín Ramírez, INFs Jared Serna and Abrahan Ramirez. The catcher Ramírez is the real prize in this deal, and he was one of the Yankees’ highest-regarded prospects at the time of the deal. His bat is legit, and while he might end up at first base instead of behind the dish, he has a chance to find himself right in the middle of Miami’s lineup. He’s hit at every level in the minor leagues and had 25 home runs and 26 doubles with a .845 OPS between Double-A and Triple-A in 2024. Serna is a good prospect in his own right, and Ramirez hit almost .350 in 49 games in rookie ball last season.

They also made a couple of small moves on deadline day, like dealing Huascar Brazobán to the Mets for INF Wilfredo Lara and dealing Bryan De La Cruz to the Pittsburgh Pirates for RHP Jun-Seok Shim and 3B Garret Forrester, but none of those three are very highly regarded prospects. They also sent Trevor Rogers to the Baltimore Orioles for OF Connor Norby and 3B Kyle Stowers, but both players have graduated from prospect status.

There are a handful of other prospects who were not acquired via trade last season who are notable, including 2024 first-round pick PJ Morlando. A high-school outfielder, Morlando has a good hit tool and solid power. 2021 first-round pick Joe Mack is a good catching prospect whose bat started to come around in 2024, and 2024 second-round pick shortstop Carter Johnson signed for a well above-average slot deal out of high school.

ANY 2025 IMPACTS?

We’ve already covered most of Miami’s farm system, but most of it is young and unlikely to make an impact in 2025. The two biggest prospects who are on the radar for this season are Snelling and Agustín Ramírez.

Snelling will likely begin the season in Triple-A, but with a shortage of talent on the MLB roster, the door will be open for him to pitch his way into the big league rotation. Sandy Alcantara will anchor the rotation, but even he is coming off Tommy John surgery so who knows how much they’ll be able to count on from him. Also, at the rate Miami’s been trading away MLB talent, Alcantara could very well not survive the trade deadline. After that, it’s Ryan Weathers, Edward Cabrera, Max Meyer and Valente Bellozo. Weathers, Cabrera and Meyer all have upside but also all have major question marks, and Bellozo is far from a lock to even win the final rotation spot out of camp, that could go to Mazur. There should be plenty of opportunities for pitchers to earn MLB opportunities, and Snelling will be at the top of the list.

Dax Fulton is another arm who could be in the mix, and he’s currently on the 40-man roster, unlike Snelling. A former high second-round pick, Fulton was a much higher-ranked prospect a few years year ago. However, missing most of 2023 and all of 2024 after undergoing his second Tommy John Surgery, he’s since tumbled down prospect lists.

As for Ramírez, there’s a chance he could make the team out of spring training. It’s probably not likely, but he played over 60 games at Triple-A last season. If he looks good in spring, there’s no reason not include him on the Opening Day roster other than service time manipulation. On FanGraphs, the projected starting catcher is Nick Fortes and the projected starting first baseman is Jonah Bride, so there’s plenty of opportunity there for Ramírez. That doesn’t even take into account the designated hitter where the current projected starter is the aforementioned De Los Santos. With 40 long balls and a near .300 batting average in 2024 he should absolutely be in the conversation for the Opening Day roster, and if he sticks he could be a sneaky pick to lead this depleted Marlins roster in home runs.

Other possible offensive contributors include Javier Sanoja, who made a big-league cameo in 2024. He is projected to make the MLB roster on the bench, and he could end up being a utility player. In just 15 games, Sanoja started games at second base, shortstop, left field and center field. Victor Mesa Jr. could also threaten for an MLB roster spot with the lack of depth the Marlins have in the outfield.

J.D. Martinez was plunked in the elbow by a pitch in the second inning of Tuesday’s 9-4 loss to the Athletics. He stayed in to run the bases, but was pinch-hit for his next at-bat, raising concern for the Mets’ designated hitter.

Luckily for the Mets, Martinez seems to be fine. The X-rays on his elbow came back negative, showing no damage at all to his arm. The veteran told the media after the game that it felt like he was “hit again” while running the bases and that his arm had “no strength.”

Christian Scott is one step closer to returning to the Mets’ rotation. The righty will resume throwing Sunday after hitting the injured list back in July. He has been playing catch the last couple days and will be stretched out to 90 feet Wednesday.

MLBPipeline’s new top 100 prospects list was released Tuesday, along with every team’s new top 30 prospect list. Brandon Sproat (40), Jett Williams (57), Drew Gilbert (82), and Ryan Clifford (83) all landed on the top 100 list.

Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio has been accused of stealing sand from Malibu’s broad beach. “This case is about a private property owner using a public beach as their own personal sandbox and the disturbing conversion of a public natural resource (i.e., sand from Broad Beach) for a nearby homeowner’s personal, private use,” the lawsuit says.

According to Dave Roberts, Yoshinobu Yamamoto threw an estimated 40-pitch bullepn on Tuesday. Yamamoto is expected to meet the Dodgers in St. Louis on Friday to face hitters.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is likely to head to the IL with a left UCL injuy, according to Bryan Hoch. The Yankees are still gauguing the severity of the injury and deciding whether surgery will be needed.

The Marlins have seen massive changes to their front office the last couple years. Under Peter Bendix, the team has let go of two assistant general managers, four team coordinators, and one international scouting director. You can read Alden González‘s piece on the matter here.

James Paxton has a partial tear of the right calf muscle. The lefty is unlikely to return this season according to Sean McAdam of MassLive.com, but reportably hasn’t given up on next season.

The Dodgers announced that rookie River Ryan will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of the season.

Chisholm Jr. has been one of the lone bright spots for the Marlins this season slashing .249/.323/.407/.730 with 13 home runs and 50 runs batted in. Outside of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, the Yankees have only two active players on the roster with an OPS over .700. With the addition of Chisholm Jr. he will make an immediate impact giving Soto and Judge extra insurance in the lineup.

The headliner of the deal for the Marlins will be the Yankees No. 3 prospect, Agustin Ramirez. According to Baseball America, he has a powerful swing that is ranked in the 90th percentile in average exit velocity and makes a lot of contact within the strike zone. Ramírez has raw power and 16 homers in less than 60 games this season.

Christian Scott took the mound for the Mets and, despite a strong start, had moments of trouble that put the team at a disadvantage. In the bottom of the third, Scott loaded the bases with one out but managed to escape the jam by retiring Jesus Sanchez and Otto Lopez.

The following inning, Scott allowed two runners on before challenging Jazz Chisholm Jr. with two sliders. Chisholm responded with a three-run homer, giving Miami a 3-2 lead. Jake Burger extended the Marlins’ lead to 4-2 with a solo home run off Adrian Houser in the bottom of the seventh.

Scott finished his outing with four innings pitched, giving up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts over 75 pitches. Houser and Jake Diekman kept the Marlins at bay, allowing only one run on two hits. The Mets’ offense struggled, managing only two runs; one on a sacrifice fly from Luis Torrens and another on an RBI single by J.D. Martinez.

Mark Vientos and Jose Iglesias each had multi-hit games, providing the bulk of the Mets’ offense. However, the team as a whole struggled with runners in scoring position, going 1-for-8 and leaving nine runners stranded.

Jose Iglesias continued his strong performance as a Met, notching another two hits, bringing his batting average to .398 as a Met and an OPS of 1.005.

Statistic Of The Game: Christian Scott’s Home Run Issues

Although Christian Scott has shown flashes of his skill on the mound, one thing that is hurting him in the majors is the long ball. Since being called up in early May, Scott has given up eight home runs in 47 1/3 innings pitched, with an ERA of 4.56.

Clearly, while Scott has incredible skill and a lot of promise, the home runs are seemingly keeping him from earning his first major league win.

On Deck

The Mets will look to salvage the series with a split as they play a wraparound series finale on Monday against the Marlins. David Peterson (4-0, 3.09 ERA) will start for the Mets, and Yonny Chirinos (0-1, 5.76 ERA) starts for the Marlins. First pitch is at 6:40 pm, and will be broadcast on SNY and WCBS 880 AM.

The Mets’ second half of the season did not get off to a roaring start on Friday night. Sean Manaea had an off night and while the Mets were able to climb back into the game to make it close, they just couldn’t finish the job. The Marlins this year seem to bring their best game against the Mets, and now the Mets look to even the series this afternoon in Miami.

Luis Severino has pitched 109 2/3 innings over 18 games this season with a 3.78 ERA, 4.34 FIP, 1.195 WHIP, and a 103 ERA+. Muñoz has had two quality starts this season, everything else has been a bit rough. • Jeff McNeil is on a four-game hitting streak. He is batting .400 (6-15) in that span with three runs, two doubles, two home runs, six RBI with a walk and a 1.371 OPS. He recorded his second career multi-home run game last night. He has recorded 221 career multi-hit games. That is 15th in Mets history.
• The Marlins are celebrating Venezuelan Heritage today at loanDepot park. The Mets feature three players from Venezuela on the team, Catchers Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens, RHP José Buttó as well as Manager Carlos Mendoza.
• The Mets rank fifth in the majors and second in the Senior Circuit with 123 home runs this season. The Mets have five players who have hit 10 or more home runs this year (Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, J.D. Martinez, Brandon Nimmo, and Mark Vientos). Only the Padres and Orioles have more with seven players.

Three Things To Watch For

1. A walking record? The SNY broadcast noted on Friday night that Francisco Lindor tied a Mets record. Friday night was his fourth consecutive game where he walked twice. The only other Met to reach this obscure feat – David Wright. Two walks this afternoon and the record is only Lindor’s.
2. Is this Jeff McNeil’s half? It’s no secret that Jeff McNeil had a rough first half of the season. He started Friday night making a catch in the outfield over the outfield wall. He then went on to go 3-for-4 at the plate including two home runs. Is the Flying Squirrel back?
3. Another good outing for Phil Maton. The Mets would probably like to avoid using Phil Maton on back-to-back nights, especially with the bullpen fully rested after the All-Star break. Friday Night he allowed a hit and got two strikeouts in a scoreless inning of relief. Since June 12th Maton has pitched in 15 games with a 1.20 ERA, 3.03 FIP striking out 17 batters over 15 innings.

Brandon Nimmo and Brandon Marsh moved over to the corners for new names, and the Nationals introduced a new player to the position after Víctor Robles dealt with a spine injury last season. Still, even with new faces, the list is locked down by familiar names that continue to do damage in the majors.

No. 5 – Alex Call, WSH

Despite being No. 5 on the list, Alex Call was a pleasant surprise for the Nationals last season.

The 28-year-old played in 128 games for the Nationals in 2023 and locked down centerfield. He was an elite defender, recording eight outs above average, which landed him in the 94th percentile for OAA in the majors. While the bat wasn’t intimidating, Call demonstrated patience at the plate and logged a .307 on-base percentage.

Call finds himself last on this list due to the light bat. He slashed .200/.307/.307 and hit only 23 extra-base hits in 375 at-bats. The righty only recorded an 84.6 average exit velocity, which didn’t pair well with his high 36.8% ground ball rate.

No. 4 – Harrison Bader, NYM

Harrison Bader was struck by the injury bug again last season.

The defensive wizard was supposed to play for Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic but missed out due to an oblique injury. The injury took Bader out until May 2, when he made his season debut with the Yankees against the Guardians.

Bader struggled offensively in the Bronx. He slashed .240/.278/.365 with seven homers in 84 games, and then was released by the organization mid-summer. Bader was picked up by the Reds soon after, but couldn’t shake his offensive woes and slashed .161/.235/.194 in 12 games.

Bader remained a free-agent until the Mets inked him to a one-year, $10.5 million deal this offseason. The Mets are hoping that Bader can stay healthy and find the bat he displayed while in St. Louis. Still, even if Bader is subpar offensively, he’ll provide immense value defensively. Bader recorded nine OAA (95th percentile) last season in a short sample size, and spaces out an outfield with Nimmo in left and Starling Marte in right.

No. 3 – Johan Rojas, PHI

Johan Rojas came up on July 14 for the Phillies last season and ran away with the centerfield job.

The 23-year-old was lockdown defensively. He recorded nine OAA (95th percentile) in only 59 games played, which was more than double what Marsh recorded at the position (4) and over the entire season (7). Rojas also held his own at the plate, and slashed .302/.342/.430 with a 111 OPS+ at the plate.

The combined effort in the field and at the plate led to Rojas finishing with a 2.5 bWAR in 59 games played. The Dominican-native could take off next season and put together a four-plus WAR season if given the opportunity. However, it’s worth noting Rojas doesn’t walk much and had an xBA of .247 last season, which points toward regression at the plate next season.

No. 2 – Jazz Chisholm Jr., MIA

Multiple injuries to Jazz Chisholm Jr.‘s foot derailed a potential breakout season.

The 25-year-old clubbed five homers in the opening month of the season and was adjusting to a new position after the Marlins had acquired Luis Arráez. Then, during a game on May 13, Chisholm Jr. injured his toe making a diving catch.

The Marlins originally diagnosed the injury as a right-foot contusion and put Chisholm Jr. on the injury list. He only played in 10 games in May, and then only in seven games combined between June and July. It was later revealed that Chisholm Jr. had turf toe, which he played through in August and September as the Marlins chased the third wildcard.

While the Marlins missed the playoffs, Chisholm Jr. produced when he was on the field. He recorded a 1.2 bWAR and slashed .252/.306/.462 with 19 homers in 97 games. Chisholm Jr. also took major strides in the field, finishing the season with four OAA in centerfield (87 percentile). If he can stay healthy, Chisholm Jr. has the chance to be a 30-30 player in centerfield that plays plus defense.

No. 1 – Michael Harris II, ATL

Michael Harris II takes over the No. 1 spot ahead of the 2024 season.

The Georgia native struggled initially last season, but had an epic finish to the season to solidify the spot. He slashed .325/.356/.522 with nine homers in the second half, locking down the ninth spot in a loaded Braves lineup.

Overall, Harris finished 2023 with a .808 OPS, 114 OPS+, and 241 total bases. There’s no question he was the best ninth hitter in the majors and would bat in the top of the lineup on any other team. Harris also paired his bat with another stellar year in the field. He finished with seven OAA (92nd percentile) and in the 93rd percentile for arm value.
