Good morning, Mets fans!

The Mets had a golden opportunity to clinch a series win and an above .500 record on their West Coast swing last night. However, their bullpen let them down again. With two outs in the eighth inning and a runner on first, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza decided to go to Edwin Díaz to get a four-out save. Unfortunately, Díaz’s command was erratic again, leaving him in a bases-loaded situation with Corbin Carroll at the plate. Having to throw a strike, Edwin hung a slider over the middle of the plate, and Carroll gave the D-Backs a three-run lead with his second homer of the night.

While 2022 Edwin Díaz might still be in there, the Mets $100 million closer has blown six saves on the season and has been especially unreliable lately. Díaz and Butto, perceived as the Mets most potent duo, also blew another game on their road trip against the Padres on Sunday. If the Mets’ back-end, particularly their former “reliever of the year” closer, cannot be relied upon, they will continue throwing away crucial games amid a heated wild card race.

To put the icing on the bullpen-mess cake, right-hander Dedniel Núñez was unavailable on Wednesday because of forearm tightness. Mendoza said the high-leverage reliever is currently day-to-day. Núñez has only pitched in one game, 1 2/3 scoreless innings on August 24, since returning from the injured list because of a right forearm strain.

The final game in Arizona will be a showdown between David Peterson (8-1, 2.85 ERA) and Ryne Nelson (9-6, 4.29 ERA) at 3:40 P.M. EDT.

Wild Card Update

The Mets created more distance between themselves and the three wild card teams with their loss last night. With Arizona’s win over the Mets last night, they increased their lead over the Mets to seven games. The Padres losing to the Cardinals also helped Arizona, putting them a full game in front of San Diego for the first wild card spot. The most consequential result for the Mets on Wednesday night was the Braves winning again, as they swept the Twins and are now 8-2 in their last 10 games. New York is four games behind Atlanta for the final wild card spot.

Good morning, Mets fans!

On Wednesday, it was reported that Justin Verlander will be making his first rehab start of the season as he works his way back to the big league roster. Just like in 2023, Verlander started the season on the shelf. This time, it was due to shoulder inflammation that he was feeling early on in spring training.

However, Verlander’s return seems to be right around the corner, as Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reported that he will be making his first rehab start for the triple-A Sugar Land Space Cowboys on Sunday. The plan is for the 41-year-old ace to throw 70-75 pitches in Sunday’s start and then to make one more rehab start prior to his return to the major league club.

It is important to note that the Mets would be liable for $17.5 million of Verlander’s 2025 contract if he were to reach 140 innings pitched this season, kicking in a vesting option for the 2025 season.

Updated August 26th, 11:40 p.m.

After the Mets 5-4 victory over the Marlins, Dominic Smith met with media and was asked to comment on what the last few days have been like for him. Here is a clip of Smith’s response.

Dominic Smith is a remarkable young man. Listen to what he says. Feel his emotion. It doesn’t have to be this way. pic.twitter.com/0KcRw3G5Li

— Steve Gelbs (@SteveGelbs) August 27, 2020

Original Post:

Prior to tonight’s game, Dominic Smith took a knee during the national anthem for the first time this season. Smith had previously chose to stand for the anthem, saying that the action of kneeling simply was not enough.

That changed however after the events of Wednesday, as games across the country were boycotted and postponed to bring attention to the fight for social justice. The Milwaukee Bucks players made a big statement when they chose to boycott Game 5 of their playoff series against the Orlando Magic. Since then, all NBA teams followed suit and the playoffs were effectively postponed.

In baseball, the Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners were just a few of the handful of teams that chose to postpone their games as well, in solidarity with the NBA. Black players like Jason Heyward, chose to sit out of their team’s games in support of the protest.

For a player that has often been the only black player on the Mets roster across his career, Smith changed his previous stance on standing for the anthem and took a knee to join the protest.

pic.twitter.com/tsQkIZ9Ras

Last month, Smith sat down with SNY’s Steve Gelbs and had an open conversation about his experience as a black man in America.

“It’s not fair. I treat people equal, wholehearted, and I just try to show love. I don’t understand why the world and people can’t do the same.”

On Friday, Major League Baseball was supposed to celebrate the legacy of Jackie Robinson with Jackie Robinson day. It will be very interesting to see what actions the league, teams and players take this year, as the importance of Robinson should loom larger than ever.

A recent announcement from MLB Communications confirms that the Mets’ series against the Marlins from April 28-3o in San Juan, Puerto Rico has been canceled due to the ongoing worries over the coronavirus pandemic.

An April 18-19 series set between the Padres and Diamondbacks in Mexico City, Mexico has also been canceled. Both matchups will be rescheduled in the home teams’ respective cities of Miami and Phoenix.

Cancellations of international contests, at least those scheduled within the first month of the season, seemed imminent given the recommendations of the Center for Disease Control.

The 2020 Major League Baseball season had already been postponed through mid-May, on the back of the CDC’s advised eight-week moratorium of events exceeding 50 people. Spring training camps across the league have closed across the last few days, with two Yankee minor leaguers testing positive for COVID-19 in that time.

At this time, MLB owners, alongside such players as Freddie Freeman and Jason Heyward have combined to pledge over $30 million (and counting) in financial relief to displaced ballpark employees and local community programs, though we remain unsure as to when the rate of confirmed cases may slow.

In the meantime, all of us at Metsmerized Online advise that you take up social distancing (if you have not already), keep tabs on your loved ones (especially the elderly, even if just over the phone!), and continue to wash your hands to prevent the spread of germs.

If you have access to baseball highlights or archived games while in quarantine, we’ve found reminiscing to be somewhat helpful. Even if they are, in fact, Mets games.

Jacob deGrom came back from the dead on Monday, defeating the Chicago Cubs 6-1 on a hot and humid night at Citi Field.

After getting pummeled in his past consecutive starts, deGrom vindicated himself in the most valiant way by pitching a complete game, the second of his major league career.

DeGrom (5-3) held the struggling reigning World Series champs to a single run on five hits. He walked four, while striking out six.

His counterpart John Lackey (4-7) fell to 0-4 in his last five starts, having no luck keeping the ball in the park – serving up 19 home runs this season, one shy of the most in the majors.

The Mets, riding a season high four-game winning streak, are suddenly showing signs of renewed life with their starting rotation.

Within their last five games the bullpen boned an effective Matt Harvey but another strong outing by Robert Gsellman coupled with the triumphant return of Steven Matz and Seth Lugo, there is a ray of hope that this injury-riddled ball club can recover from all the damage that’s been done.

Monday night the Mets defense did their due diligence by converting four double plays after shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera’s 11th error of the season.

Jason Heyward led off the second with a routine popup in which Cabrera collided with Jose Reyes as they both camped under it – the ball glancing off Cabrera’s glove and falling to the ground.

But Cabrera made up for it in the bottom frame by launching a drive over the right center field fence for a 1-0 lead.

Then in the fourth, after Jay Bruce (3-3) added a two-run shot in the third, Cabrera struck again for his sixth home run of the year and sixth multi-home run game of his career.

On Tuesday, Zack Wheeler will give it a whirl for NY’s fifth win in a row when he faces John Lester and his 0-3 record away from Wrigley Field.

Thoughts from Rob Piersall…

Last night was one of those games that you feel proud calling yourself a Mets fan.

DeGrom showed shades of his classic form, the balls were flying out of the yard and everything broke right. It felt like 2015 all over again.

While the Mets have been in such turmoil for a majority of the season, there is finally a glimmer of hope and a sense that things could realistically come together, even it will be an uphill battle.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a perfect Mets victory as Yoenis Cespedes departed with a sore left heel in the sixth inning, and as a fan, that’s all you can hope that it is.

The starting pitching is finally starting to come to fruition as we are getting strong performances from the aforementioned deGrom and Matz, as well as Gsellman and Lugo who were so instrumental in getting the Mets back to the postseason in 2016.

Our offense has been great, no question about it, but our pitching needs to step up, and recently they have done just that.

As most of you know, Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward was benched for four straight postseason games by manager Joe Maddon, and was riding the bench for three of the five games in the World Series. Nobody could have predicted this last offseason when Heyward was signed by the Cubs to a colossal eight-year, $184 million deal.

In the first season of his deal, Heyward produced a .230/.306/.320 batting line with just seven home runs, 49 RBI, 11 stolen bases and a pitiful 1.5 WAR. A far cry from his walk year when he practically doubled his production across the board while batting .291 and producing a 6.5 WAR.

So far in this World Series Heyward has seen Jorge Soler, Chris Coghlan and rookie Albert Almora all start in his place.

It prompted a conversation with an MLB scout who had the following to say to Jon Heyman of Today’s Knuckleball:

An NL scout says Jason Heyward needs to find the “shortest bat with the biggest head” because his swing is too long. The scout also said, “He needs to stop trying to be Darryl Strawberry. He’ll never be Darryl Strawberry.”

It’s been over 25 years since Darryl Strawberry was crushing baseballs and flying around the bases so it was nice to see his name come up in the middle of the Fall Classic.

Strawberry had the best long swing I ever saw and I remember when he first came up there were some comparisons of his swing to the Splendid Splinter himself, Ted Williams.

The first overall pick in the 1980 draft, Strawberry proved very fruitful for the Mets, producing a 36.5 WAR through his age 28 season before replanting his roots in Los Angeles.

His best season came in 1987, when Strawberry batted .289/.398/.493 with 32 doubles, 39 home runs, 36 stolen bases, 108 runs, 104 RBI. Some would argue that his 1988 season was even better when he finished second in the MVP voting.

Strawberry won the Rookie of the Year in 1983 and then reeled off eight straight All Star seasons before crashing and burning in L.A.. He has often called leaving the Mets the most regrettable decision he ever made. We here at Metsmerized Online wholeheartedly agree.

Anyway, it was great to see Darryl’s name come up last night at Wrigley Field, and even better to recall what an amazing career he had with the Mets – a true 5-tool player and one of the best I ever saw.

Last year, the Mets quickly moved on from Yoenis Cespedes by agreeing to a one year deal with Alejandro De Aza so he could platoon with Juan Lagares in center field. At the time, the Mets had indicated they were willing to go two to three years for Cespedes, which was aligned with the Sandy Alderson concept of no second generation contracts. This was far short of the six year $132 million contract Cespedes was seeking in free agency.

Due to a number of circumstances, Cespedes never got the contract he wanted. This allowed the Mets a rare opportunity to sign a superstar caliber player on their own terms. Without Jason Heyward or Justin Upton on the free agent market, or really any star outfielders on the free agent market, it does not appear the stars will once again align for the Mets. If they want to retain Cespedes, they are going to have to offer him that big contract he wanted last offseason.

Aside from David Wright, this is not how the Mets do business. Other than Wright, no player entering their age 30+ season has received a five year plus contract offer. With the way the Wright contract has gone, it does not appear the Mets would be willing to change that policy. With that in mind, it appears as if Cespedes will be signing elsewhere this offseason leaving the Mets to once again try to figure out how best to build the team so it can return to the postseason.

One player that could be a potential fit is former Met Carlos Gomez. Ironically, Cespedes was only a Met because Gomez had a hip issue. If not for that, Gomez would be the player entering free agency with the Mets wondering how far they should go to re-sign him.

Now, Gomez doesn’t appear to be an obvious fit at the moment. Even if Cespedes does not return, the Mets already have a lot of quality major league outfield depth. Heading into the season, the Mets have, Michael Conforto, Curtis Granderson, Lagares, Brandon Nimmo, and possibly Jay Bruce. It’s going to require a lot of mixing and matching to make sure everyone gets enough playing time to be productive. Why add an outfielder to this mix to further complicate matters?

The easy answer is you want to make the team better, and Gomez does that.

After Gomez seemed lost in Houston, he was released, and he was rejuvenated with the Texas Rangers. In 33 games, Gomez hit .284/.362/.543 with six doubles, eight homers, and 24 RBI. Naturally, many will note not to trust the small sample size. It’s a fair point, but why should you trust the small sample size of Gomez’s time in Houston where he hit .221/.277/.342 with 25 doubles, nine homers, and 42 RBI in 126 games? With that in mind, we should take a broader look at Gomez.

Over the last five seasons, Gomez was a .265/.326/.453 hitter who averaged 26 doubles, 18 homers, and 61 RBI. This is probably a good indication as to where his true talent level is at this point. Still, there is the possibility Gomez is capable of more. He has shown the capacity to hit over 20 homers a season, and he has shown the ability to draw walks.

Then there is the matter of defense. Gomez is still a solid defender despite possibly losing a step in center field. The former Gold Glover has averaged an 8.2 UZR and a 7 DRS in center field. When you couple that with Gomez having a much better bat than Lagares, you have a possible upgrade in center field. With Gomez having experience in both left and right field, the Mets can put out a phenomenal outfield defense late in games to help them protect leads. Keep in mind, that was one of the things the Mets did extremely well in 2015 when they went all the way to the World Series.

As for the rest of the outfield, a Gomez (or Cespedes) signing would force the Mets to put Nimmo in AAA for another season, which isn’t a bad thing for a developing player. Lagares would once again become the late inning defensive option. From there, it gets a little trickier with Bruce, Conforto, and Granderson. One could get traded, one could move to first base, and in the worst case scenario, the Conforto could start the year in AAA until someone gets injured, which as we have seen with the Mets, is likely.

Overall, we know the Mets are too left-handed in the outfield, and they need another right-handed bat. Ideally, that is Cespedes. However, in the event that Cespedes gets that massive contract the Mets aren’t likely to match, the player could be Gomez.

Yoenis Cespedes was officially introduced to the media in a press conference held on Wednesday at Citi Field. After a brief introduction by general manager Sandy Alderson, Cespedes answered questions through interpreter Melissa Rodriguez.

“I know this team has everything it needs to continue on what we started last year. Now that it’s official, I can say I’m very happy to be putting on my Mets jersey again,” said Cespedes in his opening statement.

Cespedes told reporters he always knew he wanted to come back to New York. “The fans showed me incredible support from my very first day. I just knew that I wanted to come back. I knew the Mets were who I wanted to be with.”

What really stood out for me was when he was asked to explain why he chose the Mets when there may have been much better offers out there such as the ones Justin Upton and Jason Heyward received.

“It was very important for me to rejoin my teammates and finish what we started here with the New York Mets. We have some unfinished business that we intend to take care of this season. It was very important to me.”

“I’m really excited about the upcoming season. I’m really happy to be with the Mets and I’m really excited to be here for the next three years.”

“I want to convince all my teammates that we have it within us to finish what we started last year. That is the mission. That is the focus. We have everything in place to win it all. We are in it to win it.”

Anthony asks…

If Mets decide to go to the trade route for OF help what are your thoughts on trying to acquire Jon Jay or Adam Eaton? Eaton is better, but Jay will cost less in trade pieces. If Eaton, he would be the everyday center fielder. Jay could platoon, maybe eventually take over and be supplanted (or re-signed) next year. Who do you think we should or can give up?

Mike replies…

I like this question because it is realistic. It is not a move that would “wow” or excite anyone but, it could be a beneficial move to say the least. We know that the Mets are strapped for cash, or at least they appear to be, so a trade for Jay or Eaton is far more likely than signing Yoenis Cespedes or Justin Upton.

Jay, 31, has a career average slash line of .287/.354/.384, however his play diminished significantly in 2015, posting career lows across the board with a .210/.306/.257 slash, one home run and 10 RBI in 79 games played. Throughout his career, Jay has been extremely steady, but the major dip in play last year is a major cause for concern. Of course, it also means that his trade value has plummeted as well. They could trade a couple of low-end prospects on a gamble to see if they can catch some lightning in a bottle. But I would much rather see Juan Lagares out there each night, instead of watching Jay steal his playing time while hoping for a comeback.

Eaton, on the other hand, just turned 27 this month and is clearly the superior player at this point in his career. Not only is he younger than Jay, he is just better at each facet of the game. Eaton’s slash line last year was .287/.361/.431 with 14 homers, 28 doubles, 56 RBI, 98 runs scored, and 18 stolen bases. He has seen his OPS increase three straight seasons and finished 2015 with a 118 wRC+.

Since he is a more desired player than Jay, that means the White Sox asking price will be significantly higher. Would the Mets be willing to trade some combination of Lagares, Gabriel Ynoa, Brandon Nimmo, or Marcos Molina for Eaton? Or will it require a Steven Matz or Zack Wheeler to get something done?

Keep in mind that Eaton also signed a five-year, $23.5 million dollar extension prior to the 2015 season. So the big question is why would the White Sox trade him after he just gave them the best season of his career and produced a 5.4 oWAR?

I agree that Eaton would be a nice addition for the Metropolitans and he’d immediately become the everyday center fielder, but the cost might be too prohibitive for them.

I would still look to free agency and sign either Denard Span or Gerardo Parra to play center instead. I love the versatility that Parra would bring to the table since he can play center adequately and can also play the corner outfield spots phenomenally. Thanks for the question.
