The Mets’ lineup has a certain fluidity to it right now.

Meaning, if someone hits, they’re likely to receive an invite to stay a little longer. With the second-worst team OPS in all of baseball, and multiple injuries, the Mets have needed all the help they can get. We saw it with MJ Melendez early in the season. We saw it with the aggressive promotion of A.J. Ewing.

And now we’re seeing it with Jared Young.

Young, who’s now hitting cleanup for the New York.

Because why not?

Young had a shot to be a key part of the Mets’ plans earlier in the season, but a meniscus tear wiped him out from April 12 to May 26. He’s since rejoined a team that went through the wringer during his absence. At the time he went down, the Mets had lost five in a row to fall to 7-9. Young probably didn’t expect that they’d go on to lose seven more consecutive games after that.

Young, of course, has still been a platoon bat, hitting almost exclusively against righties. But he’s been the starting cleanup hitter for each of the Mets’ last seven games now, and so far, so good.

Young’s .313 average .945 OPS lead the Mets’ lineup. It’s still a small sample, but it’s not as tiny anymore, with his 55 plate appearances the most he’s received among his four major league seasons. Young is 0-for-5 in limited opportunities against lefties, so when just looking at his numbers versus righties, he’s sporting a .349/.420/.628 line, good for a 1.048 OPS.

Young has always had some pop from the left side. He just hasn’t really put it all together at the highest level. He only hit .186 for the Mets last year, but he slugged .488. His slugging percentage across 171 career MLB plate appearances is .490.

In Friday’s 5-0 win over the Padres, Young got the scoring started with a second-inning blast to right-center. It traveled 422 feet and came off the bat at 111.1 mph. It was the Mets’ hardest-hit ball of the night; the second-hardest also belonged to Young, with a 109.3-mph single in the fourth inning.

It was another worthy showing out of the cleanup spot.

Young recorded his second multi-hit game in a row. He homered for the second time in his last four games and third time in his last six. He’s played in nine games total since coming off the injured list. He has reached base safely in every single one.

So, again, why not bat him cleanup? The Mets have had Juan Soto to lead the way, but finding additional sparks has been hard to come by. They have reaped the rewards of their patience with some guys; Carson Benge, Marcus Semien, and even Bo Bichette have shown signs of life after extended slumps. But the overall unit has been garishly underwhelming.

So that’s why, even in a small sample, Young’s production has been such a bright light. The Mets need something to get them going, and lately, it’s been Young.

The road woes continued for the Mets as they dropped two of three in Seattle. New York (27-35) is 12-20 away from Citi Field and hasn’t won a road series since taking two of three in Colorado about a month ago.

The Mets won the finale to give them good vibes before a day off Thursday. And up next on the road trip is the slumping Padres, who have lost four in a row, eight of 10, and are in Philadelphia on Thursday to finish their own six-game trip. So the well-rested Mets will catch a team coming off a cross-country flight.

Sounds like as good a chance as any to turn things around. But that is something to look forward to this weekend. First, let’s take a look back at the good and the bad in this edition of 3 Up, 3 Down.

3 Up

Signs of Life

Bo Bichette‘s .590 OPS ranks 158th in MLB of 165 qualified hitters. But on Wednesday, he broke an 0-for-16 stretch with a four-hit performance. He stroked singles to left, center, and right and caught a break with an infield hit on a well-placed chopper. One of the singles came with the bases loaded and drove in two to break a 1-1 tie. We have been through this before with Bichette this season, but maybe this is the game where he returns to the form that made him a two-time All-Star in Toronto.

Back in the Swing of Things

Jared Young hit a 424-foot homer in the series opener to tie the game at 1-1 in the fifth. He went 2-for-5 with an RBI double in the finale. And he looked smoother at first base than Mark Vientos, whom we will get to later. The 30-year-old is 6-for-24 with two homers since returning from left knee surgery.

Dream Weaver

It was seven up, seven down for Luke Weaver in two appearances. Carlos Mendoza brought him into a tie game with a runner on in the seventh on Monday, and he got Dominic Canzone to foul out. Then he pitched a perfect eighth with a strikeout of hot rookie Colt Emerson. In a less-pressurized setting, he fanned two in the eighth on Wednesday with the Mets up 7-1.

Weaver hasn’t allowed an earned run since April 30. He has struck out 27 and walked eight in 27 innings for the season.

3 Down

Tong Ticketed for Triple-A

Jonah Tong was literally sent down after a poor showing in the 8-3 loss on Tuesday. He allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits. He walked two and gave up a three-run homer to Jhonny Pereda, a 30-year-old journeyman catcher with 148 career at-bats pressed into action because of an injury to Cal Raleigh.

“It just boils down to that second and third up,” he said after pitching 3 1/3 innings. “Just got to do a better job.”

Off the Mark

Vientos went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts and hit into a double play for the series and made a key error in the loss on Tuesday. He has made a league-leading four errors at first base in 46 starts there.

“I’ve got to give myself a little bit of props because last month just a lot of bad luck,” he said, referring to his hitting. “The inconsistency is not something that I want. I’m pushing for better results, working with the coaches and trying my best to be the best version of myself right now. It’s not happening, but I’m working for it for sure.”

Brett’s Bat Quiet

Seven Mets combined for 14 hits in the victory on Wednesday. Brett Baty went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts to finish the series 1-for-12 with five Ks. He grounded into a double play with a runner on first and nobody out in a tie game in the eighth on Monday. He’s hitting .227/.296/.330 for the season with three homers after a solid 2025 that raised expectations.

Bo Bichette had four hits, Juan Soto and Carson Benge executed a double steal of second and home and Freddy Peralta struck out six over six innings as the Mets (27-35) broke the Mariners’ eight-game winning streak.

Bichette’s third single brought home two and gave the Mets a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning. They added a run later in the frame on the double steal (Benge took home when the catcher threw to second) and another when Jared Young‘s bouncer hit the first-base bag and eluded Josh Naylor for an RBI double that made it 5-1.

MJ Melendez added an RBI double in the fifth. A.J. Ewing had his first career three-hit game, scored a run and stole his fifth base.

Bichette entered the game 10-for-51 (.196 batting average) with runners in scoring position, especially disappointing since he was hitting .321 with RISP for his career and that was one of the traits touted when the Mets acquired him in the offseason.

New York entered Wednesday 27th in MLB in runs scored on the road and 16th at home. They were averaging 3.5 runs per game on the road and 4.5 runs per game at Citi Field. In their most recent home series, they scored 25 runs in three games against the Marlins one week after scoring twice in three games in Miami. The Mets are 15-15 at home and improved to 12-20 on the road.

The Mets were gifted a run in the first. With runners at first and second and one out, Young grounded to first. Naylor tried for the force at second, but threw the ball into left field and Bichette scored.

Peralta (4-4) gave up one run on six hits and walked two. He gave up a homer to J.P. Crawford leading off the first inning. Peralta has pitched six innings or more in five of his 13 starts.

The bullpen threw three scoreless innings. Brooks Raley took the seventh, Luke Weaver handled the eighth and Joey Gerber finished things off.

Stat of the Game

This was the Mets first win in Seattle in eight tries. The last victory there was on July 28, 2017, when Michael Conforto hit two homers, Jay Bruce homered and Jerry Blevins recorded four outs to earn the win. Rafael Montero made the start.

Player of the Game

Bichette went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. He singled to left, center, right and had an infield hit. He also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. He is slashing .226/.280/.310. It was the second four-hit game for the Mets this year. Marcus Semien had the first.

On Deck

The Mets are off Thursday. Christian Scott (1-0, 2.97 ERA) earned his first career victory in his last start in his 16th try. For Scott, it was the first win of his major league career, and the Mets’ offense gave him some backup with six runs. The bullpen had another strong day and got the remaining 12 outs to secure the win for Scott. The Mets are now 25-33 on the season.

Scott Notches First Career Win

Right now, the Mets’ starting rotation is in flux. Clay Holmes is injured, Freddy Peralta and Nolan McLean are struggling, and David Peterson‘s struggles have resulted in him going back to the bullpen. With that, the Mets need Scott and Jonah Tong to step up. Coming off one of his better outings of the season last weekend against the Marlins, Scott was impressive again. He pitched five good innings with eight strikeouts and allowed five hits and one earned run. Scott utilized his sweeper really well, throwing it 37.5% of the time. He also threw his fastball 40.6% of the time. Scott has 13 strikeouts in his last two outings.

Senger Hits First Career Home Run

Scott wasn’t the only one on the Mets who got a first for their career in the game. Catcher Hayden Senger, who had only one hit since coming back to the major leagues after the injury to Francisco Alvarez, took a slider away for his first home run of the season over the left field wall. Senger, who turned 29 years old in April, hit six home runs in the minor leagues this season. The team was waiting for Senger to demonstrate the power they knew he had. It was also just a feel-good moment as manager Carlos Mendoza, a longtime minor leaguer who never got a chance at the high level as a player, had a big smile on his face when Senger got back into the dugout after the home run.

Benge, Ewing Impress Mazzilli

Before they were inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame, Mazzilli and Valentine spoke to the media, and one of the highlights was Mazzilli speaking about the two rookie Mets outfielders. “I love watching Ewing and Benge play”, Mazzilli said, “They have all the tools, they’re exciting. I think there are some good things ahead for those young kids. They’re impressive.” Right on cue, Benge and Ewing showed exactly why Mazzilli is a fan. Ewing made a great running catch in the fifth inning to preserve a win chance for Scott. Benge not only made a nice catch of his own on defense but also had a three-hit day at the plate and scored a run.

For one night, nine years after they were drafted two rounds apart, Eric Wagaman and Jared Young made for a dynamic duo at designated hitter.

Wagaman went 1-for-2 with a 415-foot solo home run in the second inning off Reds lefty starter Andrew Abbott. Young, pinch-hitting when the Reds brought in righty Zach Maxwell, delivered a single in the seventh and scored on Carson Benge‘s two-out hit. The Mets (23-33) broke a five-game losing streak with a 4-2 win in front of 33,453 at Citi Field.

If and when he returns from the injured list, the switch-hitting Jorge Polanco will likely take over much of the DH duties. Polanco (Achilles) started a rehab assignment at Double-A Binghamton Wednesday and went 1-for-2 with a single and a run scored. He could return in June. In a worst-case scenario, he could be shut down and need surgery.

But while the Mets wait and see on Polanco, this pair could platoon and provide a lift.

Eric Wagaman by Berto Carlo

Wagaman, 28, slashed .283/.321/.462 and hit five homers in 173 at-bats vs. lefties for the Marlins last season. (One of the homers was off of David Peterson.) Young is 8-for-22 with two doubles vs. righties this year.

Wagaman, you may recall, burned the Mets last year on the season’s final day. He doubled off of Ryne Stanek in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie and the Marlins went on to a 4-0 victory that cost the Mets a playoff spot.

The pair were both drafted in 2017. Wagaman went in the 13th round to the Yankees out of Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif. Young was selected in the 15th round by the Cubs out of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.

The Angels took Wagaman from the Yankees in the Rule 5 draft in 2023 and he debuted with Los Angeles in 2024 before going to Miami in free agency. The Marlins traded him to the Twins for a minor-league pitcher last offseason and the Mets picked him up off of waivers from Minnesota last month.

Young, 30, debuted for Chicago in 2022, playing in six games. The Cardinals took him off of waivers in 2023, but he never played for St. Louis. He rejuvenated his career with a quick stop in Korea before the Mets signed him as a free agent in December 2024.

Holmes (4-4) was visited by the trainer after the play, but stayed in the game for another inning. X-rays later showed the broken bone in his leg. He gave up four earned runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out eight over 4 1/3 innings. Robert Colonna has more here on where the Mets could go with Holmes’ spot in the rotation.

Things appear pretty bleak for the New York Mets right now.

While still early, the last couple of weeks have been ugly, and the struggles continued with the Mets being swept by the Dodgers in LA. Over the course of the three games, New York was outscored 14-3. In all, the offense has managed a measly three runs over the last 38 innings.

Furthermore, mental errors continue to plague this team. The Mets are playing fundamentally bad baseball every single night. Players are making inexcusable, costly mistakes on a daily basis. It is just hard to watch.

So, let’s try to find a few positives while recapping all the negatives in the latest edition of 3 Up, 3 Down…

TIMELY BOOST

While not directly related to the Dodgers series, the Mets did get some positive news in LA. Juan Soto, out with a right calf strain, resumed running this week. Furthermore, he took part in some live at-bats at Citi Field on Wednesday. As a result, the superstar hitter could return in time for the Mets’ next homestand. Given how lifeless this offense has been, Soto’s return can’t come quick enough.

ADDING A SPARK

Due to injuries, MJ Melendez was recalled from Triple-A and made his Mets debut on Wednesday. It was a debut to remember. The outfielder hit two doubles and finished with an RBI. With the rest of the lineup going a combined 3-for-28 with 12 strikeouts, Melendez at least tried to provide a much-needed spark. While it didn’t amount to anything, Melendez did show that he could be a contributor for the Mets at the Major League level.

THE NOLAN SHOW

Nolan McLean is legitimate. Like, he really is the real deal. The rookie entered this season with high expectations, and he’s quickly justifying all of the hype. McLean was lights out in his latest start, allowing just one run on two hits with eight strikeouts over seven stellar innings. He gave his team every single opportunity to win. It was just a shame his offense didn’t get the memo. Nevertheless, McLean is continuing to show why many feel he could be the future face of this franchise. He flashed filthy stuff against LA while impressing with both his arsenal and his command. When McLean is operating at the peak of his powers, as he was on Tuesday, he’s going to be hard to beat no matter the quality of the opposing lineup.

3 DOWN

NO PULSE

There are few words remaining to accurately describe just how bad the offense is at the moment. Even without Juan Soto, there are no excuses for this lineup being this bad. Yet, 19 games in, and we’re approaching panic time with just how lifeless the entire offense is. Across the three games in LA, the Mets scored just three runs while being held to only 12 hits. Furthermore, they have managed just three runs total over the last 38 innings. If that wasn’t bad enough, the at-bats look lifeless and there appear to be no tangible signs of a turnaround. There is a lot of swing-and-miss with this team, not to mention a real lack of an offensive identity. Unless things turn around soon offensively, then the Mets could be in a lot of trouble.

AN UGLY MESS

“We’re not playing good baseball right now.” And manager Carlos Mendoza wins the most captain obvious statement of the entire year. Yes, the Mets aren’t playing good baseball right now. They are playing incredibly ugly baseball. They are whiffing on the very basic fundamentals of the game. And they are making sloppy errors that you would struggle to find in Little League. It is just a hot mess. Francisco Lindor failed to charge down a groundball that led to LA hitting a grand slam late in the series finale.

Francisco Alvarez was thrown out at second after misreading a play in the same game. Devin Williams struggled out of the bullpen on Wednesday. David Peterson threw yet another clunker in his latest start. All in all, the Mets aren’t helping themselves right now due to an inability to get even the basic fundamentals of the game right.

PILING ON

Everything tends to go wrong during the course of a losing streak. As so proved during the three-game stretch in LA. First, the Mets lost Jared Young for anywhere between 6-8 weeks with a left meniscus tear. Now, while not a major piece, Young has provided solid depth this year with a .391 on-base percentage. Perhaps more consequential was the news that a stint on the IL still hasn’t been ruled out for Jorge Polanco. The veteran was out of the lineup again on Thursday as he continues to deal with Achilles bursitis. Not only has Polanco been unable to log many reps at first base, but he’s also not produced offensively. He’s hitting just .179/.246/.286/.532 with one home run. There might be some concern that this lingering injury could lead to diminished production for the entire year.

The Mets have placed utilityman Jared Young on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to April 13, with a torn meniscus in his left knee. Outfielder MJ Melendez has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to take Young’s roster spot. Additionally, the team has released right-handed pitcher Luis García.

Young has been one of the few bright spots for the scuffling Mets offense, going 7-for-20 with two doubles and two RBIs. He has struck out just three times and drawn two walks in 23 plate appearances. Young started four games at first base and two games in left field, but has been out of the lineup since Sunday’s series finale against the Athletics.

Melendez has gotten off to a modest start for Syracuse, batting .216/.286/.431 with two homers, three doubles and a triple over 56 plate appearances. Melendez has played exclusively in the corner outfield spots this season, but he appeared in two games at first base for Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. Melendez soared in prospect rankings thanks to a monstrous 2021 season in which he hit 41 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A, and posted a respectable .700 OPS with 51 home runs in 1,587 plate appearances for the Royals from 2022 to 2024. He’s looking to rebound after a rocky 2025 season, which he mostly spent in Triple-A.

As for García, he was battered for five earned runs and 11 hits over 6 1/3 innings during his brief tenure in Flushing. The 39-year-old was designated for assignment on Monday.
