The Mets announced on Twitter Sunday that they have placed right-handed pitcher Jacob Rhame on the injured list with elbow discomfort and recalled left-hander Donnie Hart from Triple-A Syracuse.

Rhame, 26, has appeared in five games for the Mets this year and owns a 4.26 ERA in 6.1 innings pitched. The Georgia native was just recalled from Triple-A on Saturday when New York sent Tyler Bashlor down.

Hart, 29 next month, was claimed off waivers by the Mets on Saturday from the Milwaukee Brewers. The southpaw has pitched in four games this season for the Brew Crew, and has not allowed a run in 6.2 innings pitched.

The Texas native originally debuted in 2016 with the Baltimore Orioles, whom he pitched with through 2018.

Hart’s best season came in 2017 when he appeared in 51 games out of Baltimore’s bullpen and registered a 3.71 ERA, 4.49 FIP and struck out 29 in 43.2 innings pitched.

Hart will wear No. 68 and be available for Sunday’s series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The New York Mets (44-53) were defeated for the second consecutive game against the San Francisco Giants (49-49) by the score of 1-0 in 10 innings.

Dominic Smith, playing left field, made a costly error in extra innings to allow the winning run to score.

Smith on the final play of the game: “The ball went up and I had a good read on it, good lead. In the last second, I got scared because last year we (Rosario) collided and stuff like that. Just took my eye off the ball because of what happened and I ended up dropping it.”

Pitching:

Jacob deGrom was stellar on the mound for the Amazin’s tonight, as he hurled seven scoreless innings on 108 pitches. DeGrom struck out 10 batters, allowed three hits, and walked three batters. Tonight he also passed former Met/SNY Mets broadcaster Ron Darling on the team’s All-Time strikeout list.

Luis Avilan pitched a scoreless eighth inning, only allowing one base runner.

Jacob Rhame got the assignment to pitch the ninth inning. The righty, coming off his one-game suspension, got into a little trouble, walking two batters during the inning, but was able to finagle his out of the inning by striking out Joe Panik. Rhame’s outing was extended into the 11th inning, where he gave up the walk-off hit on a pop up off of Pablo Sandoval which Dominic Smith made an error on that allowed the winning run to score.

Offense:

The Mets offense looked puzzled at the plate tonight against Giants’ starter Tyler Beede. Beede was nothing but efficient, going eight scoreless innings. Jeff McNeil, Robinson Cano and Wilson Ramos were the only hitters to manage a base-hit.

Pete Alonso struggled at the plate going 0-for-4, as he struck out three times.

The Mets left five runners on base, and they were 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position.

On Deck:

Walker Lockett (0-1,11.74) will be getting the call up tomorrow in place of the injured right-hander Zack Wheeler to make his third start of the year.

Lockett allowed 10 runs in his two previous starts with the Mets. The Giants will be sending veteran Jeff Samardzija to get the nod against the Mets (7-7, 3.93). He will look to extend his recent success on the mound, as he has had an earned run average of 1.66 in his last three starts. The scheduled game time will be at 4:05 p.m. EST.
Rhame is currently appealing a two-game suspension from MLB that was handed down on April 24 and will be available tonight.

The righty appeared in 16 games with the Syracuse Mets and went 3-1 with a 5.94 ERA (10 earned runs/16.2 innings) with six walks and 21 strikeouts. He is in his second appearance with the Mets. He appeared in three games with New York earlier this season and posted a 8.10 ERA (three earned runs/3.1 innings) with five walks and two strikeouts.

Yesterday, the Mets placed RHP Zack Wheeler on the 10-Day IL, retroactive to Friday, July 12, with right shoulder fatigue.

The New York Mets made a handful of roster moves ahead of Friday night’s series opener versus Milwaukee, optioning right-handed reliever Jacob Rhame and infielder Luis Guillorme to Triple-A Syracuse, recalling right-hander Corey Oswalt, and activating Jacob deGrom off the 10-day injured list.

DeGrom is scheduled to take the hill against the Brewers on Friday night, weather permitting. Mets skipper Mickey Callaway announced earlier in the day that if the game were to be postponed — presumably creating a split-doubleheader on Saturday — the right-hander would start a hypothetical game-one.

Rhame, 26, was suspended for two games by Major League Baseball on Thursday for “intentionally throwing” at Phillies first-baseman Rhys Hoskins twice during the ninth inning of the Mets’ 9-0 win on Tuesday.

The right-hander is appealing the suspension, as per Callaway’s press conference on Friday, and will serve his suspension — if applicable — upon his return to the major leagues.

Guillorme, 24, is hitting .167/.211/.167 over 19 well-spaced-out plate appearances this season. One would assume he’ll be seeing consistent playing time in Syracuse.

Oswalt, 25, allowed five earned runs over 3.2 innings of work in his lone 2019 appearance for the Mets. He’s pitched to a 3.55 ERA with 11 strikeouts and two walks over two starts (12.2 innings) for the Syracuse Mets this season.

Major League Baseball has suspended New York Mets right-hander Jacob Rhame for two games following their determination that he intentionally threw at Phillies first-baseman Rhys Hoskins on Tuesday night.

During the ninth inning of Tuesday’s 9-0 win over Philadelphia, Rhame sent an offering over Hoskins’ head, inducing a brief clearing of the benches. After both sides returned to their corners, Rhame sent another pitch sailing past Hoskins’ head, inciting a furious bat-throw from the Phillies’ slugger, as well as a few choice words.

Rhame chalked up his coming in very high and tight to Hoskins as “trying to work inside” following Tuesday’s game, but, clearly, Philadelphia was hearing none of it.

Phillies’ starter Vince Velasquez drilled Mets third-baseman Todd Frazier with a pitch in the Mets’ 6-0 loss on Wednesday, then Hoskins took his time trotting around the bases after taking Rhame deep in the ninth inning.

Rhame, 26, has allowed three earned runs over three major league appearances this season (3.1 innings) with two strikeouts and five walks. If he does not choose to appeal the suspension, it is set to begin on Friday.

As per Mike Puma of the New York Post, it “sounds like the Mets expect Rhame to appeal the suspension”.

The Mets welcome Milwaukee into town for a three-game series this weekend. We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.

The 36-year-old southpaw did not start things off smoothly as it took him 26 pitches to get through the first inning. In that inning, he gave up a run on back-to-back doubles, in addition to a walk. Including his one relief appearance, it was the fourth time this season that Vargas has allowed at least one run in the first inning in which he pitched.

He was then replaced with Daniel Zamora after J.T. Zamora finished off the inning by fanning Harper, who stuck out for the third time in the game.

Robert Gsellman pitched the eighth inning and did not fare well. He gave up a leadoff triple to Hoskins, an RBI single to Maikel Franco and a single to Cesar Hernandez before recording an out on a sacrifice bunt by Sean Rodriguez. He did not settle down after the out, as he continued his struggles by allowing back-to-back RBI singles. Gsellman stayed in the game and ended up getting back-to-back outs to bring an end to the inning.

Jacob Rhame came into the game in the ninth and had a rematch with Hoskins after the controversy of throwing at him on Tuesday. Hoskins got some revenge as he padded the Phillies’ lead with a two-run home run. The 26-year-old slugger admired the homer with a 34-second jog around the bases.

Rhame recovered to retire three of his next four batters faced to end the inning.

Offense

Despite coming into the game with the fourth-most runs scored in MLB, the Mets offense struggled mightily to get anything going in the game. Starter Vince Velasquez (1-0, 1.99 ERA) held the Mets to three hits and three walks over his five innings of work. The bullpen then combined for four shutout innings and held the Mets to an additional three hits.

The Mets were shutout for just the second time this season (the first being in their home opener on April 4).

The Mets put up six hits and three walks total. Robinson Cano had the best offensive performance as he went 3-for-3 with a walk. Luis Guillorme, Amed Rosario and Jeff McNeil were the only other Mets with hits.

On Deck

The Mets have an off day tomorrow before opening a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday. The Mets have yet to officially announce a starter, but will likely send Jacob deGrom (2-2, 3.68 ERA) to the mound on Friday to face Chase Anderson (3-0, 3.00 ERA) and the Brew Crew, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. EDT. The game can be viewed on SNY and heard on WCBS 880.

For years and years, I’ve always felt like the New York Mets made it too easy to get shoved around by opposing teams and particularly their division rivals; the Braves, Nationals and Phillies. Time and time again, Mets batters would get thrown at or hit at the plate without so much as a whimper in response – let alone any kind of retaliation. In that regard, the Mets had become the doormat of the NL East.

However, is it possible that these new Mets are no longer willing to take it on the chin and are now ready to push back whenever necessary – a significant departure from past Mets teams? I think so…

With the Mets up 9-0 against the Phillies on Tuesday night and two outs in the ninth inning, Jacob Rhame sailed a first-pitch 96 mph fastball over the head of first baseman Rhys Hoskins who quickly ducked and then took a couple of steps toward the mound while calling out the Mets reliever.

Both the Mets and Phillies benches cleared and even the bullpens rushed to the center of the diamond, but order was quickly restored by home plate umpire Scott Barry and neither team suffered any casualties.

After the dust had settled and Hoskins resumed his at-bat, Rhame would sail another pitch over Hoskins’ head for ball four, prompting the Phillies slugger to furiously slam his bat to the ground and step toward the mound again.

[iframe]<iframe src=”//vplayer.nbcsports.com/p/BxmELC/philly_embed/select/media/_fWSbAKxNkeb” width=”624″ height=”351″ frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen=”allowfullscreen”>Your browser does not support iframes.</iframe>[/iframe]

Mets catcher Travis d’Arnaud blocked Hoskins from going after Rhame, but he had a few choice words for the Mets reliever as he glared toward the mound and jogged to first base.

After the game, Rhame said he didn’t throw at Hoskins intentionally and he was not trying to send the Phillies a message after they had hit both Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil the previous evening.

“I was just trying to work inside,” Rhame told reporters, but nobody was buying it – much less Rhys Hoskins and the Phillies.

“Oh, he just said they were trying to go inside, and I laughed,” Hoskins said. “He didn’t miss up and in the rest of the inning, so I’ll let you decide.”

“I don’t get it,” Bryce Harper chimed in. “I understand that two of their guys got hit yesterday. But, I mean, if you’re going to drill somebody, at least hit him in the ass. Not in the head. You throw 98, it’s scary now. You could kill somebody.”

Give me a break… What a drama queen…

Believe me, if Jacob Rhame really wanted to hit Hoskins he would have. Clearly, and despite his denials, Rhame wanted to send the Philadelphia Phillies a message and I applaud him for it.

So he threw a couple of purpose pitches in retaliation and in defense of his teammates, so what… Finally, the New York Mets showed some backbone and I loved and savored every scintillating second of it.

That’s baseball… Baseball like it oughta be.
