The 2025 World Series kicked off Friday night between the Dodgers and Blue Jays, with Toronto winning Game 1, 11-4. The Dodgers got out to an early 2-0 lead against Trey Yesavage, but Daulton Varsho got the Blue Jays on the board with a tying two-run homer in the fourth before Toronto exploded for nine runs in the fifth. It was the highest-scoring inning in a World Series game since 1968.

Among the nine runs was a pinch-hit grand slam off the bat of Addison Barger, the first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history.

During Friday night’s game, Brandon Nimmo recorded a stat line that has only been achieved four other times since 1901. He went 2-for-2 with two triples and three walks which, before he did it on Friday night, hadn’t been done since 2010 when both Shane Victorino and Dexter Fowler put up the same stat line. Mike Schmidt also did it in 1977. With his performance, Nimmo raised his on-base percentage from .373 to .387 and his OPS from .802 to .842.

In addition to Nimmo’s stellar performance in Friday night’s game, the Mets also got great performances from Francisco Lindor (2-for-4, HR, 4 RBIs) and Max Scherzer (7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 SO) in a 5-2 victory against the Rockies.

Neil Best of Newsday wrote about Gary Cohen and Howie Rose, their friendship, and their induction into the Mets’ Hall of Fame in early June.

On the show Foul Territory, Pete Alonso told a story from earlier in the season. In a game against the Reds, he badly needed to go to the bathroom as he came up to bat against Hunter Greene so he decided to swing at the first pitch no matter what. That pitch ended up being a hanging slider which Alonso hit for a home run.

Mets players selected Brandon Nimmo as their MLBPA player representative for the 2023 season. Francisco Lindor also holds a position on an eight-player executive subcommittee within the MLBPA.

Luis García of the Nationals went 6-for-6 on Friday night. At 23 years and 10 days old, García became the second-youngest player ever to record six hits in a nine-inning game. Only Jesús Alou was younger when he achieved the feat in 1964.

Earlier this month, the New York Mets lost two out of three at home against the Colorado Rockies. On Friday night, the Mets began a series, this time on the road, with the Rockies hoping to avenge their previous series loss against the team. Game 1 of the series presented a great chance with a favorable pitching matchup for the Mets as Max Scherzer faced off against Connor Seabold.

Scherzer threw seven phenomenal innings as he bested Seabold and Francisco Lindor drove in four runs, as the Mets came away with the first game of the series in a 5-2 victory.

Brandon Nimmo worked a seven-pitch walk to lead off the game, and immediately after, Lindor crushed a home run to right-center field to give the Mets a rare first-inning lead, putting them up 2-0 early. The ball traveled 439 feet, no doubt aided by the Denver altitude, but it was a great swing and result nonetheless, one the Mets have seen far too infrequently in the first inning of games this year. The next three batters for the Mets flew out to keep their lead at two.

Leading off the bottom of the first, Charlie Blackmon bounced an 0-2 pitch right back up the middle for a single. Scherzer would keep Blackmon on first base, though, as a strikeout, popout and flyout allowed him to complete the inning having thrown just 11 pitches.

The Mets’ lead was cut in half in the second inning as a hanging curveball by Scherzer was knocked out of the park by Ryan McMahon. Like the first inning, Scherzer set the next three batters down in order after allowing the leadoff baserunner, but now the Mets were playing with a 2-1 lead.

A hit by pitch with Francisco Álvarez at the plate and Nimmo’s second walk of the game put runners on first and second with nobody out to begin the third inning. Lindor worked a full count, but on the ninth pitch of the at-bat he popped the ball up behind home plate to record the first out of the inning. Jeff McNeil then hit a ground ball that looked like it could have been a double play to end the inning, but the throw to second base from the first baseman Nolan Jones hit Nimmo in the back, resulting in everyone being safe.

That brought up Pete Alonso with the bases loaded and one out. After throwing an up-and-in fastball, Seabold got Alonso to chase a slider away for a strikeout for the second out of the inning. Seabold then got Brett Baty to go down swinging, escaping what could have been a disastrous inning without giving up a run.

In the bottom of the third inning, Scherzer put up his first 1-2-3 inning of the night with the help of two strikeouts at the expense of Ezequiel Tovar and Jurickson Profar. He also got Blackmon to pop a ball up on the infield, ending his inning after just nine pitches.

With one out in the top of the fifth inning, Nimmo lined a ball into the left-center field gap for a triple, his second game in a row with a three-base hit. Then with a full count, Lindor lined a ball into center field for a single to drive in Nimmo and make it a 3-1 game. In a nearly identical at-bat to the one he had in the third inning, McNeil hit a ground ball that probably should have been a double play, but once again, an awkward throw to second base allowed everyone to be safe.

With still just one out in the inning, Alonso flew out to right field, which advanced Lindor to third base. In the next at-bat, Baty drove in Lindor with an opposite-field line drive to give the Mets a 4-1 lead. That was all for Seabold, as he exited the game after 4 2/3 innings. Matt Carasiti relieved Seabold and got Starling Marte to ground out to end the inning.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Scherzer had been pitching wonderfully having retired his last 11 in a row. Alan Trejo broke that up with a line drive that just escaped the reach of Baty down the third base line for a double. Scherzer, however, remained composed and struck out Tovar for the second time to get out of the inning and strand Trejo in scoring position.

With a single up the middle with two outs in the top of the sixth inning, Francisco Álvarez extended his hitting streak to six games. Nimmo then walked for the third time to put two runners on for Lindor. Falling behind in the count 0-2, Lindor lined out to right field to end the inning.

Having thrown 85 pitches through six innings, Scherzer came out for the seventh inning for the first time this season. After a ground ball out, Harold Castro hit a bloop single but Scherzer was able to get Nolan Jones to strike out to record the second out of the inning. Alan Trejo then recorded his second extra-base hit of the night by lining a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third and bring the tying run to the plate. A fly ball out off the bat of Tovar allowed Scherzer to get out of the inning without giving up a run and end his outing after seven brilliant innings.

David Robertson relieved Scherzer to start the bottom of the eighth inning and was immediately greeted with a solo homer off the bat of Blackmon to cut the Mets’ lead to 4-2. Robertson was able to set the next three batters down in order, including a strikeout of Kris Bryant, to ensure the Mets would pitch in the bottom of the ninth with at least a two-run lead.

Leading off the top of the ninth inning, Nimmo hit another line drive, this time to the right-center field gap, that allowed him to advance to third yet again for his second triple of the game. Nimmo’s two-triple, three-walk game is a feat that has only been achieved four other times since 1901. Lindor then hit a deep fly ball for a sacrifice fly that allowed Nimmo to score, giving the Mets some insurance and extending the lead to 5-2.

Brooks Raley came in to pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning with a chance for a save. Raley walked the leadoff batter McMahon, a lefty. Randal Grichuk stepped up to the plate to pinch-hit and hit a sharp line drive to center field that was caught by Nimmo for the first out of the inning. Raley then walked another lefty in Nolan Jones in four pitches to bring the tying run up to the plate. Buck Showalter had seen enough, as he pulled Raley to give Adam Ottavino a chance to record the final two outs.

Alan Trejo hit a sharp ground ball to third base that Eduardo Escobar had trouble coming up with, and it bounced just beyond the dirt into the outfield. It appeared that the Rockies might score, or at the very least have the bases loaded with one out. But as the baserunner Jones rounded second base, Lindor made a heads-up play by recovering the ball and throwing behind Jones as he attempted to dive back into second base. Jones was called out to give the Mets a crucial second out. Ottavino then struck out the pinch-hitter Mike Moustakas to put the game to bed and secure the 5-2 victory.

Player(s) of the Game

Despite Nimmo’s historic performance in which he went 2-for-2 with two triples, three walks, and three runs, the players with the biggest impact on the game were Lindor and Scherzer. Lindor was able to take advantage of Nimmo getting on base ahead of him by hitting a home run, a single and a sacrifice fly to record four of the Mets’ five runs batted in, giving him 38 RBIs on the year which is good for third in the National League.

For Scherzer, this game was his best outing of the year as he went seven innings and gave up just one run on six hits while walking none. He also struck out eight batters and lowered his season ERA to 3.54. Entering tonight’s game Scherzer had never recorded a win in Coors Field, but in a ballpark notorious for being friendly to hitters, he shut them down in a dominant performance.

On Deck

The series with the Rockies continues on Saturday night as Justin Verlander (2-2, 3.60 ERA) hopes to build off of his previous start against the Guardians in which he gave up just one earned run in eight fantastic innings. For the Rockies, Chase Anderson (0-0, 1.15 ERA) will be making his third start with the team after beginning the season with the Rays. The game will begin at 9:10 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on PIX11.

Opening Day this year was historic from a fan engagement standpoint. According to MLB Communications, Opening Day was watched for 172 million minutes by MLB.TV viewers, the most watched day in MLB.TV history by 42%. Additionally, online merchandise sales on Opening Day were the highest ever by 10% and social media views were up 83% from Opening Day 2022. Ben Cafardo of ESPN noted that MLB Opening Night on ESPN had 20% more viewers than last year’s MLB Opening Night and was the most watched cable program on March 30.

The Mets lost their first game of the season on Friday, 2-1 to the Marlins. The team will look to rebound as they take on Miami again on Saturday at 4:10 p.m. ET.

After an embarrassing loss to Mexico on Sunday, Team USA (2-1) got their offense going early on Monday against Canada. Thanks in part to a nine-run opening inning, USA was able to defeat Canada 12-1 in seven innings to put themselves in a much better position to qualify for the quarterfinals.

While Team USA didn’t have the perfect game that Puerto Rico had earlier in the day against Israel, they were able to make some history of their own:

Team USA loaded the bases with no one out against starter Mitch Bratt to begin the bottom of the first. Then, Nolan Arenado ripped a two-run double to left field to get the scoring started.

Three batters later, after a Kyle Tucker sacrifice fly, J.T. Realmuto hit a base hit to center to extend the lead to 4-0. That ended Bratt’s night. The left-handed pitching prospect for the Rangers only got one out in the inning, allowed six runs on three hits, and walked three on 25 pitches (nine strikes).

Braves pitching prospect R.J. Freure entered the game for Canada. Cedric Mullins ended up driving in Trea Turner (RBI groundout) with a triple to right for the USA’s sixth run. The scoring finally ended when Mike Trout hit a three-run home run in his second at-bat of the inning.

Those were all the runs that Lance Lynn would need. While the right-hander did allow a solo home run to Jared Young to lead off the top of the second, he was able to give the USA bullpen a much-needed breather. The White Sox right-hander went five innings, allowed one run on two hits, and struck out six on 65 pitches (42 strikes).

The USA offense did not stop as they scored three more runs in the second on a Tim Anderson RBI triple, a Realmuto sacrifice fly, and a solo home run by Trea Turner, which gave Team USA the 12-1 advantage.

Miles Mikolas ended up getting the final six outs of the game to secure the victory. In the final two innings, the Cardinals right-hander allowed three hits and struck out two batters on 33 pitches (22 strikes).

With Mark DeRosa’s lineup changes, Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil were not in the lineup on Monday. Alonso ended up pinch-hitting in the bottom of the sixth against Cade Smith (right-handed pitcher in the Guardians system) and struck out swinging. McNeil came into the game in left field in seventh, but never got an at-bat.

Anderson ended up getting the start at second base and Trout ended up getting a break from playing the field as he was the designated hitter. Paul Goldschmidt has played first base in each of the first three games. Every USA player had at least one hit except for Tucker.

Next Game

Team USA will finish up Pool C play on Wednesday night against Colombia (10 p.m ET, FS1). By then, they will know what they need to do to advance since they are the last game that will be played in the pool. Merrill Kelly will start for the USA at Chase Field in his home ballpark.

Colombia’s starter is yet to be announced since they still have to play Tuesday afternoon against Canada (3 p.m, FS2). They took their first loss of the tournament on Monday when they were defeated by Great Britain, 7-5, to give everybody at least one loss in Pool C.

The USA last played against Colombia in the 2017 WBC and ended up winning, 3-2, in 10 innings.

New York Mets fans were very familiar with Washington Nationals first baseman Joey Meneses at the end of last season. While the Mets were able to hold him in check in eight games (.182/.229/.273, 1 home run, 11 K’s), Team USA was unable to do that on Sunday night. The Team Mexico first baseman went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs as Mexico (1-1) shocked USA, 11-5. They are now 2-1 in three WBC meetings against USA dating back to 2006.

Mexico took the lead in the first inning against Nick Martinez. Randy Arozarena led off the game with an infield single. Two batters later, Meneses hit his first of two home runs, a two-run shot to left-center.

Team USA got one of those runs back in the bottom of the second when Tim Anderson had an RBI single that drove in Kyle Tucker (tripled earlier in the inning). That was pretty much all the USA did against starter Patrick Sandoval (3 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 K’s, 33 of 55 pitches for strikes).

Martinez had settled in a groove after the home run until Mexico added another run in the third due to three two-out singles. Meneses had an infield single, Rowdy Tellez hit a bloop single that just got past Jeff McNeil, and Isaac Paredes was able to reach on an infield single due to the shift being on. That was it for Martinez as went 2 2/3 innings, allowed three runs on five hits, walked a batter, and struck out two on 57 pitches (33 strikes).

In the top of the fourth, Mexico broke the game open against Brady Singer. Arozarena had an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-1. Arozarena had a great night of his own as he was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Then, after an Alex Verdugo walk, Meneses hit another home run to left center that delighted what appeared to be a pro-Mexico crowd at Chase Field.

Mexico later added four more runs in the eighth against Daniel Bard on an RBI double by Arozarena, a two-run single by Tellez, and an RBI single by Alan Trejo. The 11 runs allowed is tied for the most runs ever allowed in a WBC game by Team USA. With the tiebreaker being runs allowed per out, this kind of result has the potential to hurt their chances of advancing.

The USA offense managed eight hits against Mexico’s pitching. Will Smith hit a solo home run in the seventh and Bobby Witt Jr. had an RBI double in the eighth. Anderson ended up being one of the only bright spots for the team. The White Sox shortstop went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

As far as how the Mets players did, Pete Alonso got the start as the designated hitter and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. McNeil was back in the lineup at second base and batting ninth and went 1-for-4 with a single to left in the ninth.

The Mets reached an agreement with All-Star closer Edwin Díaz on a five-year, $102 million contract. The deal includes a $20 million option for 2028, an opt-out after the third season, and a full no-trade clause.

This is the first contract given to a relief pitcher that is worth upwards of $100 million and just the eighth such deal in Mets history. Notably, this is the third $100-plus million contract that Steve Cohen has given out since he took over the team two years ago. Just three years after having the worst year of his career, Díaz had arguably the greatest season by a reliever in franchise history in 2022, racking up 32 saves while pitching a 1.31 ERA/0.90 FIP while striking out a whopping 118 of the 235 batters he faced (50.2% strikeout rate).

Chris Bassitt declined his $19 million mutual option, making him a free agent. He will likely receive a qualifying offer worth $19.65 million. In a career-high 181 2/3 innings, Bassitt pitched to a solid 3.42 ERA/3.66 FIP and 1.145 WHIP with 166 strikeouts, but he took the loss in the Mets’ season-ending defeat against the Padres.

The Mets picked up their $1.5 million team option on Daniel Vogelbach. The left-handed DH was productive after coming over to Flushing in July, hitting .255/.393/.436 with six homers and an 18-percent walk rate in 183 plate appearances.

After the Astros won the World Series, owner Jim Crane revealed he nixed a deal the team had in place to acquire Willson Contreras from the Cubs. The trade would have sent righty José Urquidy to Chicago, but Crane vetoed the deal at Dusty Baker‘s insistence.

The Cardinals announced their coaching staff for the 2023 season, with seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday serving as the team’s bench coach. Turner Ward was promoted to be the hitting coach, Dusty Blake was promoted to pitching coach, Brandon Allen has been named the assistant hitting coach, and Julio Rangel rounds out the changes as the bullpen coach.

The Nationals have re-signed left-hander Sean Doolittle to a minor-league contract with an invite to spring training. The two-time All-Star pitched in six games for Washington in 2022 but missed most of the season with an elbow injury.

Carlos Rodón has opted out of his contract with the Giants, making himself a free agent. Rodón is coming off his second consecutive All-Star Game appearance, pitching to a strong 2.88 ERA and an MLB-leading 2.25 FIP with 237 strikeouts in 178 innings, giving him an MLB-best 12.0 K/9.

The New York Mets have announced that they will commemorate Johan Santana‘s historic no-hitter this season.

In a statement released by the organization on Monday, the Mets revealed that they would host a pre-game ceremony commemorating the 10th anniversary of Santana’s no-hitter on Tuesday, May 31, before the game against the Washington Nationals.

If you need reminding, although that seems unlikely, Santana delivered a moment on June 1, 2012, that will live on in Mets history forever.

In an 8-0 win over the Cardinals at Citi Field, Santana dug deep into his repertoire and gave everything he had to deliver the first no-hitter in franchise history.

After a long 50 years and 8,019 games, the two-times Cy Young Award Winner achieved what Mets greats like Tom Seaver and Dwight Gooden had just fallen short of.

That June night is historic, iconic, and legendary, with then Mets manager Terry Collins putting Santana on a 115-pitch limit before the game, only for the lefty to change his manager’s mind after the seventh inning with history within his grasp.

Santana threw 134 pitches in the game, including the now-iconic changeup pitch to strike out David Freese and forever write himself into the history books.

And the Mets now plan to celebrate that incredible evening by honoring Santana and his catcher on that night, Josh Thole, with Santana detailing just what this announcement means to him.

“I still remember how I felt that night,” Santana said. “I knew how much it meant to New York Mets fans. I was very proud to be a part of the first no-hitter, and I can’t wait to celebrate with the fans on May 31.

“It holds a special place in my heart.”

The Mets also announced that both Santana and Thole would take part in the return of Old Timers’ Day on Saturday, August 27, with Owner Steve Cohen once again making it clear that, under his watch, the franchise will be dedicated to celebrating its rich history.
