The Rumble Ponies offense had a huge afternoon as they scored eight runs on eleven hits. Nido continues his midseason resurgence and is now hitting .366 with two home runs over his last 10 games. Mora has quietly put together a solid season with Binghamton and, after hitting .313/.360/.463 in June, his July has gotten off to a similarly hot start (.294/.333/.471 in July).

After dominating in his last two starts, Dunn was hit around a bit in this game, allowing nine batters to reach base and throwing 93 pitches over five innings. Dunn has allowed one run or less in four of his six starts with Binghamton this season. Roseboom continues to have an excellent bounce back season after missing most of 2017 with injuries; he has struck out 45 batters in 38.2 innings this season. Taylor has not allowed an earned run in ten of his last eleven appearances.

The Mets were limited to just five singles in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader. Both runs scored on an Anthony Dimino single in the fourth inning. This was Rivera’s third rehab game and he played the full seven-inning game at second after only playing five innings the game before. After a rough June, Gimenez has gotten off to a strong start to July as he his hitting .345/.367/.379 through the first eight games of the month and has a seven game hitting streak.

Corrnish started the game for St. Lucie and needed just 72 pitches to get through the six innings needed for a quality start. Cobb made his first relief appearance with St. Lucie since being promoted from the Columbia Fireflies. He has a 34:4 K:BB ratio on the season.

After a poor offensive performance in the first game of the doubleheader, St. Lucie’s hitters struggled even more in game two. St. Lucie had just three runners on base for the entire game, with all three reaching on singles. The lone run of the game came on Dimino’s RBI groundout in the first inning. St. Lucie’s offense, which sports a league worst .620 OPS, has been a major factor in the team’s poor performance in 2018.

Llanes gave up a career-high eleven hits in his start, but, with the help of three double plays, he was able to complete the game with allowing just two runs. Llanes has a 1.46 ERA and 11:2 K:BB ratio through two July starts.

The Fireflies were held without a run for the first five innings of the game, but they were able to get on the board with four runs in the sixth inning to jump ahead 4-2. The team would add a run in each of the eighth and ninth innings, but the six runs would not be enough to survive Columbia’s late-inning bullpen meltdown. Moreno is hitting .364 over his last 10 games and is hitting .299/.379/.442 at home on the season. This was Vasquez’s last game with the Fireflies, as he was promoted to the St. Lucie Mets following Sunday’s game.

Rennie made his first start with the Fireflies since being signed from independent ball earlier in the month. He pitched very well in his first start, allowing just two runs over seven innings. Columbia’s bullpen was not at its best, to say the least, as they allowed seven runs over the final two innings of the game. Hernandez, who had been so dominant for the majority of 2018, allowed a go-ahead grand slam home run in the ninth and saw his ERA jump from 1.19 to 2.59.

The Cyclones offense struggled in Sunday’s game as they had just two runs on five hits. Medina drove in both of Brooklyn’s runs: A third inning double brought home Brian Sharp to tie the game at one, while his eighth inning single brought home Meyer as the winning run. Meyer extended his hitting streak to eight games and he has struck out just twice over that stretch. Anthony Dirocie was promoted to Brooklyn before the game and went 0-for-3 with with three strikeouts in his Cyclones debut.

Syndergaard was making his first rehab start coming back from a strained finger ligament. His afternoon started off a little shaky, as a walk, single, and wild pitch resulted in the first run of the game scoring quickly. However, he quickly settled in, giving up just a single hit for the rest of the game. He threw 71 pitches in the start. Gilliam, who was recently drafted in the fifth round of this June’s draft, pitched a scoreless inning in his professional debut. Smith has been completely dominant so far in his professional career as he has giving up just three hits and one walk while striking out 14 in 9.0 scoreless innings.

With twelve hits, ten walks, five batters hit by pitches, and one runner reaching on an error, the Mets had an incredible 28 runners on base, an average of slightly over three an inning. They were solid with runners in scoring position, going 5-for-16, but they still had the opportunity to score more than their sixteen runs, as the team still left 11 men on base. Santana has struck out just six times in 14 games this season.

Bryant started the game and did a good job of missing bats, as he struck out six batters in less than four innings. However, he was a bit wild and, with his pitch count already at 79, he was taken out of the game in the fourth inning. Tripp has allowed just one hit through his first three professional relief appearances.

The Mets offense was held to just four hits, all of which were singles, in the shutout. Mauricio has a hit in every game he’s played in with the GCL Mets as he extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Jarred Kelenic went 0-for-4 in the game, which is the first time that he has gone hitless in a professional game. Rasquin continues to hit extremely well during his rehab stint and he be ready to return to Columbia for the first time since April shortly.

Otanez started the game for the Mets and had his best outing since returning from Tommy John surgery. Otanez went six innings for the first time in his career and, while three Mets errors didn’t help his cause, he only gave up one earned run. Rodriguez walked three batters without striking anyone out, but he didn’t give up a hit or a run in relief.

The 51s scored a run in the first after Jeff McNeil singled to lead off, stole second, and was brought home on a bases-loaded walk to Luis Guillorme.

In the third, Zack Borenstein blooped a one-out double to left and scored on a Kivlehan two-out single, giving Vegas a 2-1 lead.

Jose Lobaton hit his third home run of the season in the sixth to make it a 3-1 game, and the 51s tacked on two more in the eighth after a string of hits from Johnny Monell (double), Ezequiel Carrera (single), and McNeil (double).

Flexen walked five batters but was able to escape with just one earned run through his three innings of work. Tacoma scored in the second after a Kirk Nieuwenhuis leadoff double followed by a Seth Mejias-Brean single two batters later.

Sewald allowed the only other Tacoma run in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly that scored John Andreoli, who doubled with one out earlier in the frame.

Krol worked two scoreless innings, lowering his earned-run average to 5.87 through 7.2 innings with Las Vegas since coming over from the Los Angeles Angels.

Binghamton found themselves in a 3-0 hole after the first, but they were able to scratch a run off of the deficit in the second after Taylor led off the inning with a single, followed by a Nido double and an RBI single via Tim Tebow with two outs.

They added two more in the third on a solo homer from Michael and a two-out, RBI single from Nido. Allen hit his second home run of the season to lead off the eighth, cutting the Thunder’s lead to 7-4.

Crismatt allowed a three-run home run in the first to Ryan McBroom. McBroom doubled home another run in the third, giving the Thunder a 4-1 lead.

Trenton put three more on the board in the seventh against Daniel Zamora. A throwing error by Michael on a sacrifice bunt attempt scored one run, then Jeff Hendrix singled to score two later in the frame.

Blackham pitched the ninth and walked the bases loaded to start the inning, then walked in Trenton’s eighth run of the night in the next at-bat. Ryan replaced him and retired the next three batters in order to limit the damage.

Altoona exploded in the fourth inning with five runs and scored three runs apiece during the next two frames. Knuckleballer Mickey Jannis made a three-inning relief appearance, but failed to tame Altoona’s hot hitting. Matt Blackham pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the game in his Rumble Ponies debut.

The Rumbles Ponies took a quick lead thanks to Peter Alonso‘s sacrifice fly in the first inning. Jeff McNeil made his case for an MLB promotion with a RBI single in the third inning to double the Mets lead. However, once the Curve’s offensive onslaught began, their bats’ quieted. The light-hitting John Mora homered in the sixth inning, but by that time, it was too late to even sniff a comeback. Peter Alonso’s mini-slump persisted as he went 0-2 and is hitting .191 in his last 15 games.

Daytona (33-28) 6, St. Lucie (26-34) 1, Game 1 F/7 Box

The Tortugas took the lead with a first running run and never looked back, defeating St.Lucie by a score of 6-1. Gibbons danced in-and-out of trouble for 5.2 innings, but escaped with only two runs on his ledger. Gibbons also struck out two batters. Billy Oxford relieved him and with another game looming later that night, manager Chad Kreuter decided to ride him for the rest of the game. Oxford struggled mightily, but thanks to three Mets errors, all of the runs scored against him were unearned, keeping his ERA at a pristine 0.00 ERA.

We had a Wilmer Flores sighting in the St.Lucie lineup yesterday! Flores’s rehab assignment begun at St.Lucie where he doubled in three at-bats. Luis Carpio replaced him after the fifth inning. The rest of the Mets fared well against Daytona’s pitchers, but weren’t able to tally more than one run. They scratched across their one run in the sixth inning thanks to an Anthony Dimino RBI single.

Daytona (34-28) 8, St.Lucie (26-35) 2, Game 2 F/7 Box

Thanks to a four-run first, the game was almost over as soon as it started. Gabriel Llanes didn’t fare well throughout the night, leaving in the fourth inning, having given up ten hits and seven runs. The shortened game saved the Mets bullpen as three relievers combined for the last 3.2 innings. The trio of relievers were generally effective and only Matt Pobereyko was scored upon.

Desmond Lindsay and Luis Carpio’s RBI singles quickly put the pressure on the Tortugas’ starter, Scott Moss. However, he quickly recovered and managed to hold the Mets off the scoreboard for the rest of the night. Lindsay and Carpio enjoyed strong nightcaps as they both recorded two hits and an RBI apiece.

Lexington (35-29) 2, Columbia (31-31) 1 F/5 Box

• RHP Tony Dibrell: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 K, 2 BB

Dibrell suffered another tough-luck loss as the weather and an untimely error cost him a chance at his third win. In the third inning, with the game tied, shortstop Edgardo Fermin committed a throwing error, which led to the go-ahead run. Instead of Dibrell being out of the inning, Cal Jones scored from second as the go-ahead run. The game was stopped in the bottom of the fifth as Dibrell was pitching.

• Raphael Gladu: 1-2, RBI(.286/. 337/.365)

The Fireflies couldn’t get much going offensively. Janser Lara retired the first six batters against them, but Wuilmer Becerra broke up the perfect game leading off the third inning with a single. He would later come around to score on a Raphael Gladu single.

After Felix Sosa was removed in the fourth inning, Nelmerson Xavier Angela filled the role of longman, pitching 3 1/3  scoreless innings.  The Cardinals threatened against Jeffrey Colon late, but Darling Baez finally closed out the game.

A second-inning outburst gave the DSL Mets their fourth win. Juan de la Rosa led the way with three hits and Moises Gonzalez tallied two base knocks. Even though catcher Andres Regnault went hitless for only the second time this year, his slash line is still at an impressive .400/.484/.720

DSL Cubs2 (3-6) 3, DSL Mets2 (5-4) 2 Box

• RHP Jorge Cespedes(0-1, 7.71 ERA) 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 K, 1 BB

Jorge Cespedes started the game for the Mets and pitched admirably, limiting the Cubs to two runs. Mets pitchers held the Cubbies scoreless until the 10th when Antonio Villalba allowed a walk-off single to Miguel Fabrizio.

• RF Stanley Consuegra:2-3, R, BB(171/.318/.286)

Thanks to an error by Cubs shortstop Nestor Heredia, the Mets tied the game in the fourth inning. However, they were held scoreless for the rest of the game. Five of the batters in the Mets lineup are currently hitting under the Mendoza line.

Week In Review

The Las Vegas 51s (15-23, fourth in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern division) have won four of their last seven games despite losing David Thompson, Bryce Brentz, and Gavin Cecchini to injuries and Dominic Smith and Luis Guillorme to the major leagues.

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (17-17, fourth in the Eastern League Eastern division) sport seven players with a .300 or better wOBA in May, but they’ve only managed a 6-7 record in the season’s second month.

The St. Lucie Mets (15-19, sixth in the Florida State League South division) scored a season-high 11 runs on Friday, thanks to three-hit efforts from Desmond Lindsay, Anthony Dimino, Luis Carpio, and Ian Strom. Seven of the runs were knocked in by Lindsay and Carpio.

The Columbia Fireflies (19-17, third in the South Atlantic League Southern division), the organization’s lone squad with a winning record, were 1-2 in one-run games this week.

Mets Minors News & Buzz

Rumble Ponies infielder Jeff McNeil hit for the cycle on Sunday in Portland. He became only the second player in team history to accomplish the feat, joining Josh Satin (June 24, 2011).

The Mets signed former Cincinnati Reds outfielder Patrick Kivlehan on Wednesday and assigned him to Las Vegas. The 28-year-old Nyack, NY native is 4-16 with a pair of doubles to begin his tenure in the organization.

The signing of Kivlehan was necessitated by the foot injury to Bryce Brentz, which was revealed to be a broken bone. He is expected to remain out of action for four to six weeks.

Right-handed pitcher Bryce Hutchinson continues to progress well in his rehab from elbow tendonitis. He was the Mets’ 12th-round selection in last year’s draft.

Infielder Andrew Ely underwent an MRI on Thursday in New York for a shoulder strain. Ely, a minor league Rule 5 pick, played in 13 games with Binghamton before the injury.

Who’s Hot, Who’s Not

Who’s hot: 

When he’s been healthy, Jeff McNeil has been very good. Unfortunately for him, the 26-year-old has rarely been able to say that he’s injury-free.

McNeil played 51 games over the 2016 and 2017 seasons, and, after first reaching High-A St. Lucie in 2014, he’s finally secured a full-time job in Binghamton. Through 27 games, McNeil is hitting .307/1.080, the latter number being the second-best rate in the organization.

The cycle on Sunday was the cherry on top of an all-around solid week. McNeil hit safely in all seven contests, posting a .370 average with six extra-base hits, seven RBI, and four walks to two strikeouts.

McNeil is walking more than he’s K’ing for the first time since his debut season and hitting the ball in the air far more often (and turning them into more home runs). He’s likely to see Las Vegas by midseason, where a major league future can more accurately be assessed.

Las Vegas got on the board early with a two-run single by Kelly in the bottom of the first, but they didn’t score again until Patrick Biondi hit an RBI double in the eighth after he came in as part of a double switch. It was good to see Smith finally get an extra-base hit, but his bat has still been slowly fading. However, he still sports a strong .382 OBP. Guillorme’s bat continues to heat up, as he has quietly put up a .370 OBP. But the bats couldn’t muster anything up after the first inning besides the Biondi double and they ultimately fell 5-3.

Gavin Cecchini went 0-for-2 off the bench. Brentz now has a 1.324 OPS over his last 15 games with seven home runs in that span.

Flexen continued what he’s been doing, which is giving the 51s solid if unspectacular outings. Although he has not dominated Triple-A hitters, he provided a quality start and did not walk a batter in his six innings. Taylor, who has struggled, successfully got two outs. Purke, who was in the conversation for being the second left-handed reliever out of the Mets’ ‘pen, has really struggled in Vegas. He’s slowly started to figure things out as of late, but his struggles returned last night with three walks in less than an inning. Then Rhame, who has also struggled since his demotion, had a very solid 1.2 scoreless innings to keep the 51s in the game.

The Rumble Ponies tore apart Jon Harris, sending him to the showers after 4.2 ineffective innings. Tim Tebow started the scoring off with a three-run shot in the second inning. The Fisher Cats managed to regain the lead, but the Rumble Ponies stormed right back with a four-run fifth. The Rumble Ponies extended the lead with a three-run seventh, which was highlighted by Jhoan Urena RBI double.

The Fisher Cats found a new way to attack Peter Alonso, hitting him three times. However, the slugger still extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

The knuckleballer Mickey Jannis didn’t fare well either, permitting five runs through five frames. However, once the Ponies pen came in, the Fisher Cats stood no chance. Joshua Torres contributed two scoreless innings and has been fantastic this year for Binghamton. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a very very long homer off Jannis and had two hits.

The Mets offense wasted a brilliant start from Harol Gonzalez. The Mets were held in check by Willy Ortiz, who only allowed four hits in 6.1 innings. There was hope of a comeback once he was relieved by Curtis Taylor, but Taylor similarly dominated St.Lucie, only permitting a hit over the final 2.2 frames.

Harol Gonzalez had his best start of the year last night, but still suffered a tough-luck loss. Gonzalez , scattered only four hits and two walks through six innings. Gonzalez’s only blemish on the night was a home run to Peter Maris III. The combination of Matt Pobereyko and Joseph Zanghi (who still has a perfect ERA) shut down the Stone Carbs for the last two innings.

This game started out with dueling no-hitters, but in sixth inning, the Fireflies managed to break through against Daniel Tillo. Quinn Brodey‘s three-run home run was the first hit that Tillo allowed on the night. The Fireflies would be held scoreless until the tenth inning when Raphael Gladu doubled in Ali Sanchez to give the Fireflies an exciting 4-3 victory.

Jeremy Vasquez walked in the seventh inning, which extended his on-base streak to an incredible 26 games.

Note: IF/OF Walter Rasquin has been suspended for 50 games for violating MLB’s drug policy.

Tony Dibrell had the best start of his young career, no-hitting through the Legends through five innings. His only mistake was run-scoring single off the bat of Travis Jones. Even though he walked four batters, Dibrell still punched out six. Carlos Hernandez only allowed his second run of the season, permitting the Legends to get within one of the lead. Trey Cobb pitched the final two innings, achieving the rare feat of receiving a blown save and the win.

The Rumble Ponies scored four in the second to equal the Sea Dogs four-run first inning. The Rumble Ponies then got a go-ahead sac fly from Guillorme to get the lead in the eighth. Guillorme is hitting .381 over his last ten games. Kevin Taylor, David Thompson and Dale Burdick all drove in one in the 6-5 win.

Jannis allowed four first inning runs, but settled down after that. Kyle Regnault pitched a immaculate inning (strike out three batters with nine pitches) in the seventh as his strong season continues. Alberto Baldonado gets his sixth save. He now has 16.2 scoreless innings this season and has struck out 25 over that span.

Llanes finally got his first win of the season going the distance in this one. Llanes has been outstanding in his last four starts, combining for 29 innings and allowing just two earned runs over that span. To say the least he earned his first win.

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies took the rubber game of the Akron RubberDucks series by a score of 4-1 Wednesday. The Rumble Ponies jumped to the early lead in the first inning with some small ball. Champ Stuart led off with a single on a bunt ground ball down the third base line, and promptly stole second for his 7th stolen base of the season. Luis Guillorme sacrificed Stuart to third on a bunt, and number three-hitter Kevin Kaczmarksi drove him in with a groundout to short.

Third baseman David Thompson smacked his first home run of the year, a solo shot in the fourth. Along with his first inning stolen base, Stuart added two more on the night for an Eastern League leading nine.

Right-hander Corey Oswalt registered his second best start of the year, with his first coming in his last start against Erie SeaWolves. Oswalt pitched six innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts on 97 pitches. He lowered his ERA more than a run from 4.24 to 3.13.

St. Lucie Mets (8-12) 8,  Lakeland Flying Tigers (11-9) 7 Box Score

The St. Lucie Mets had a 8-4 lead after four innings, thanks in part to Wuilmer Becerra‘s RBI single in the first, driving in a rehabbing Brandon Nimmo who walked to leadoff the inning and was playing center field. Becerra drove in his second of four runs on the night in the second with an RBI double, and in the following inning Nimmo drove in a run with a double to center. Catcher Patrick Mazeika added a solo homer in the fourth on a fly ball to left. This was Becerra’s seventh multi-hit game of this season.

Justin Dunn made his fourth start of the year for the St. Lucie Mets, appearing in a career high six innings and picking up his first 2017 victory. It was also Dunn’s first victory as a starter, as the one win he recorded in ’16 was out of the bullpen for Brooklyn. Dunn struggled in the second inning, serving up a solo home run to the leadoff batter, followed by a triple and a run scoring single. Harold Castro doubled in Ben Verlander to give Lakeland a 4-1 lead. But those would be the last runs Dunn would surrender, as Dunn posted zeroes in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth, striking out two in his final frame.

Columbia Fireflies (12-9) 5, Asheville Tourists (10-11) 0 Box Score

The Columbia Fireflies defeated the Asheville Tourists 5-0 Wednesday, their sixth shutout victory of the season, behind offensive performances from Tim Tebow, Michael Paez, and Gene Cone. A three-run second inning for the FireFlies got the offense started, as Ali Sanchez drove in the first run with a sac-fly to center before Gene Cone doubled in Tebow and Jose Miguel Medina to give the FireFlies the early 3-0 lead. Paez had his fourth multi-hit game of the season, including a solo home run in the third inning, his 2nd of the season. Tim Tebow hit his first triple of the season in the sixth and scored two runs. Tebow was robbed of a possible home run that would have given him the cycle in the eighth inning.

Merandy Gonzalez continued to impress in his fourth start, matching a career high in innings pitched (7.2), and still without issuing a run. The 21-year-old scattered five hits to the Asheville Tourists, and worked out of trouble in the third after a one-out triple by Robbie Perkins. Gonzalez induced an inning ending double play to the ensuing batter Manuel Melendez, with first baseman Dash Winningham throwing home to Ali Sanchez to catch Perkins trying to score. Gonzalez is now tied with teammate Jordan Humphreys with the most wins in the Mets’ system with four.

The Las Vegas 51s had the night off.
