The Mets announced Saturday that the team has added RHP Matthew Allan and C Francisco Alvarez to the Club Player Pool. Both players will report to the Brooklyn site and put the 60-man pool at capacity.

Allan and Alvarez, who both made their professional debuts in 2019, easily become the top prospects at the Alternate Site. They are currently ranked by MLB Pipeline as the organization’s fifth and second-best minor leaguers, respectively.

Allan, a first-round talent who slipped to the Mets in the third round of last year’s draft due to signability concerns, kicked off his career with 10.1 innings split between the GCL Mets and Brooklyn Cyclones, joining the latter for their playoff push.

The 6’3″ right-hander owns a potentially plus fastball and curveball with the breaker inducing one of the best spin rates in the organization. He generally sits in the low-to-mid 90s but has crept up to 97-98 mph in shorter stints.

Allan would have opened the 2020 minor league season with Low-A Columbia.

Alvarez, 18, spent his debut season in the GCL and with Kingsport. After receiving a near-$3 million bonus out of Venezuela, he hit .312/.407/.510 in 42 games.

As a catcher with only rookie-level experience, Alvarez’ career could go down a million different paths over the next three-to-four years. For now, he has a strong arm and good motions behind the plate and good raw power for his age.

Alvarez could have made the jump to Columbia this season but likely would have spent time in extended spring training before heading to Brooklyn.

Saturday’s additions are notable for a couple of reasons, including the fact that the Mets had seemed to be against adding their top prospects to the Pool.

And with the group now at its maximum, any further additions would require a removal, which can only be done by risking the outright loss of that player (waivers, trade, release).

“This team is built to win,” General manager Brodie Van Wagenen said at the beginning of Summer Camp. “Our intention is to have players in camp that we think are capable of helping us at the major league level this year.”

Adding Allan and Alvarez also makes them eligible to be traded immediately before the Aug. 31 deadline.

Non-60-man players can be traded but must be included as a player to be named later and cannot join his new organization until after the season.

With in-person scouting outlawed at each team’s Alternate Site for safety reasons, MLB is in the process of creating a video and data sharing system that teams can opt into. Getting updated metrics and film on two of their top prospects could allow the Mets to make a move if they are so inclined.

Whether they are traded or not, the hands-on instruction that Allan and Alvarez will receive in Brooklyn is not comparable to anything they could be doing at home.

No 5. William Lugo

Bats/Throws: R/R Age: 18
Acquired: Signed as international free agent in 2018
2019 Stats: 176 PA, .158/.280/.219, 6 2B, 1 HR, 14 RBI, 1 SB, 4 CS, 21 BB, 46 K

Signed in 2018 out of the Dominican Republic, Lugo spent the 2019 season with the GCL Mets after the team aggressively decided to bring him to the states. Playing against competition around two years older than him, he was definitely overmatched, yet showed some promise in the fact that his walk total was much higher than many prospects accumulate in their first season. The fact that he was only 17 years old helps when justifying his name among this list.

The typical high risk, high reward prospect, Lugo projects to have a good eye at the plate and the makings of an average hitter with decent power. He does tend to have a long swing yet manages to put the barrel on the ball when making contact. While he is currently spending his time at shortstop, if he continues to fill out his larger frame, a move to a corner defensive position might be needed. When in the field, Lugo does possess quick hands and an average arm.

When trying to predict the future of a player so young with so little experience and an underwhelming season, you usually want to look at what is teachable and what isn’t. When it comes to things Lugo already possesses – his plate discipline, body type, and raw power potential – one can see some nice building blocks that an organization can then work with to blossom into a more complete player.

No. 4 Wilmer Reyes

B/T: R/R Age: 22
Acquired: Signed as international free agent in 2016
2019 Stats: 244 PA, .323/.350/.441, 8 2B, 2 3B, 5 HR, 33 RBI, 12 SB, 6 CS, 8 BB, 41 K

In 2019, Reyes went from a prospect with a familiar sounding name to a prospect worth keeping a close eye on, as he had what was arguably the best statistical season by any minor league player. Had he put up the numbers he did during an affiliate’s full season instead of Brooklyn’s short season, he would have made it hard for the organization to pick Mark Vientos over him as minor league hitter of the year.

In leading the Cyclones to their first ever championship, Reyes was among the league leaders in multiple categories. His aggressive contact-first approach leads to very few walks, yet in 2019 his results showed an ability to find the holes in the defense while constantly getting the bat on the ball. He cut his strikeout percentage almost in half from 2018 (30.8% to 16.8%) and showed some power, hitting a career-high five home runs.

Reyes also won over a lot of evaluators with his defensive showing. Having a strong arm capable of making any throw from anywhere on the field tends to do that. His fluid hands and above-average agility only further push the narrative that Reyes will be able to stay at the shortstop position as he moves up the Mets’ system.

After his strong 2019 performance, one would expect the Mets to be aggressive with Reyes to see if he can produce the same level of success as he ascends up the minor leagues.

Shervyen Newton/Photo by Ed Delany, MMO

No. 3 Shervyen Newton

B/T: S/R Age: 21
Acquired: Signed as international free agent in 2015
2019 Stats: 423 PA, .209/.283/.330, 2 3B, 15 2B, 9 HR, 32 RBI, 1 SB, 4 CS, 37 BB, 139 K

The exact opposite of the aforementioned Reyes, Newton had a disappointing 2019 season that started with a shoulder injury that caused him to miss around a month to begin the season. When he did return to the field, Newton produced an up and down season that saw plenty of rough patches mixed in with flashes of the potential many see in his game.

A prospect with raw power potential, Newton possesses the capability to blossom into a 20-plus home run player if he can manage to make more consistent contact. While most young players who are plagued with high strikeout numbers like Newton (32.9 strikeout percentage in 2019) lack the plate discipline to generate walks, Newton is the opposite, as he had 37 walks in 2019 resulting in him finishing second on the team.

This leads most to believe that his issue is more about getting the barrel to the ball than swinging at bad pitches. Whether his issue in 2019 was a result of his shoulder injury lingering around or a need to develop his quick bat speed into a more contact-oriented approach, the organic skills he possesses are still too great to turn evaluators off of him.

A jack of all trades on defense, Newton has played all over the infield. Being an above-average athlete provides him the range to make plays, and a powerful arm helps in that department as well. His best defensive attribute is his ability to read the ball off the bat, and that affords him the opportunity to always be in a good position to field the ball.

When baseball resumes, many will be keeping an eye on Newton. If he can turn the corner and get his offensive tools to translate to the batter’s box, he could become one of the more prolific hitters in the Mets’ system.

No. 2 Andres Gimenez

B/T: L/R Age: 21
Acquired: Signed as international free agent in 2015
2019 Stats: 479 PA, .250/.309/.387, 5 3B, 22 2B, 9 HR, 37 RBI, 28 SB, 16 CS, 24 BB, 102 K

After a 2018 season that saw Gimenez vault into the upper echelon of the Mets’ prospect rankings, his 2019 campaign was an up and down affair due to injury, change in approach, and competition above his age range.

Gimenez was hit on the hand in early June and ended up on the injured list. When he made his return later that month, it took a little time to get going, but by the end of the season he was back to being the player that received such strong accolades after the 2018 season. Following the Binghamton season, the Mets sent Gimenez to the Arizona Fall League, where he would lead the league in average and OPS.

The Mets and Gimenez decided to alter his approach and swing in 2019 in order to get more explosiveness and generate more power. While it did result in a career-high nine home runs, it definitely had an impact on his ability to make consistent contact, especially in the beginning of the campaign. As the AFL season went on, it seemed that Gimenez had figured out how to accomplish both things while in the box.

The down season in terms of stats is likely the culprit of Gimenez seeing his overall rankings slip in some of the top prospect lists. Having dropped from a consensus top fifty prospect to a player who struggled to make some lists is strange when you consider the hand injury and the fact that Gimenez was a 20-year-old playing four years below the league’s average age in a notoriously pitcher-friendly park in Binghamton.

While the hand injury certainly had an effect on his defense for a brief period of time in 2019, for the most part Gimenez continued to play the excellent defense he is known for. He continued this in the AFL, showing that any in-season miscues were more the result of the injury than him losing any ability in the field.

A smooth defender who makes plays with ease, Gimenez has the playmaking ability to stick at shortstop for the majority of his career. The bigger issue for Gimenez and his long-term future as a Mets shortstop is that ahead of him is Amed Rosario in the majors and Ronny Mauricio on his heels a few levels below. If Rosario continues to improve his game at the MLB level and Mauricio develops into the player many think he is capable of, it may force Gimenez off shortstop and into another position.

With Gimenez having been added to the 40-man roster this past offseason, it will be interesting to see if the 2020 season and the discussion of expanded rosters finds Gimenez getting his Flushing debut a little earlier than most would have predicted pre-pandemic. If that doesn’t happen, one can expect Gimenez to make his debut in 2021 with the Mets while in the midst of plenty of rumors.

No. 1 Ronny Mauricio

B/T: S/R Age: 19
Acquired: Signed as international free agent in 2017-2018
2019 Stats: 504 PA, .268/.307/.357, 5 3B, 20 2B, 4 HR, 37 RBI, 6 SB, 10 CS, 23 BB, 99 K

When you are named the top prospect in a ranking of the Mets’ system, you are obviously going to be the No. 1 prospect at your position, and that’s where Mauricio finds himself.

After having an above-average season in 2019 for Columbia in the SAL, a pitcher-friendly league and home stadium, the 19-year-old finds himself in the same position as past top shortstop prospects Amed Rosario and Jose Reyes. Having such high praise put on a teenager is not something done very lightly, yet many analysts agree Mauricio is a player that is on the path to becoming a superstar.

The statistical analysis for Mauricio doesn’t tell the full story of how impressive a season the then 18-year-old put up in 2019. A little more than three years younger than the average player in the league, his numbers for the first five months of the season were an impressive .282/.323/.380 line, with 20 doubles, four triples, three home runs, and 27 RBI. After August, the youngster seemed to hit the full season wall as his production tapered off, as is seen with many players in their first year playing over 100 games.

At the plate, Mauricio displays above-average bat speed, with a long swing that allows him to keep his hands in the zone. The switch-hitter has been able to stay consistent with his swing from both sides of the plate. When it comes to generating power from his swing, it is mostly on the raw side currently, which will develop as he matures physically. He does need to work on his ability to keep the ball off the ground and get more lift out of his swing, which he did improve on in 2019.

A great athlete with unteachable instincts, Mauricio is capable of currently handling the shortstop position without any major flaws. Arm strength is also a tool in Mauricio’s bag, as some scouts feel it is the best among all shortstops in the organization. His continued development physically is the only issue he will have to encounter when trying to project his defensive future. If he were to add too much bulk and muscle, he may have to move off of shortstop and into a corner infield or outfield position.

When looking at Mauricio, it is hard not to fall in love with the idea of him being a future All-Star that will have a big impact in a Mets uniform. He has the natural ability and skill set that most teenage baseball players don’t possess. After such a promising first full season, the future looks very bright for the next top shortstop prospect.

The Mets took a quick 2-0 lead, but Gagnon quickly gave the lead back up by giving two runs in the second and three runs in the third. Gagnon allowed three home runs, making it the sixth time this season he’s had an outing allowing multiple home runs. Even with his ugly outing, Gagnon has been one of the best pitchers in the International League this season. This was only Pounders’ second appearance since being DFA’d on August 20th.

The Mets struck out 11 times and tallied only five hits. Despite that paltry offensive production, they still managed to tally three runs on the board. Jason Krizan‘s hit .333/.417/.548 since his promotion to Syracuse.

Herrera’s hit a bit of a skid over the last week; he’s hitting only .195/.283/.244 over his last 11 games. Sam Haggerty could position himself as a late-season reserve with a strong few weeks in Syracuse.

Brandon Nimmo continued his rehab stint with his sixth game with the Syracuse Mets. He walked and scored a run in the first inning. The Mets could activate him from the IL as soon as this weekend per Mike Puma of The New York Post.

Portland (58-74) 5, Binghamton (63-70) 3 Game 1 | F/7 Box

Dibrell hasn’t found the transition to Double-A quite as easy as expected. After excelling at St.Lucie earlier this season, the 23-year-old right-hander hasn’t been able to enjoy the success in Double-A. He’s been lit up almost every start and currently owns the highest ERA in the Eastern League. Since his fastball currently sits in the high-80’s/low-90s, so he’ll need up to curtail the walks and increase his fastball velocity up a couple of ticks in order to advance to the next level of the minors.

SS Andres Gimenez: 1-4, 2 RBIs | .245/.307/.380

Gimenez has himself a nice little hot streak, which is an especially encouraging sign taking into account his season-long struggles with the Rumble Ponies. Jeremy Vasquez has a .294/.368/.353 line in his first 17 at-bats with Binghamton. He’ll need to add a bit of power to succeed at the upper levels of the Majors.

Down 5-0 entering the seventh and final frame, the Ponies rallied to score three runs, but Austin Bossart grounded into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded to prevent any more runs from scoring.

Binghamton couldn’t get anything going from an offensive standout with Brodey’s sixth-inning single representing their only hit of the game. A Jeremy Vasquez walk in the fifth was the only other baserunner that the Binghamton was able to tack on against a trio of the Sea Dogs’ pitchers.

Campos made only his second start of the season, but was able to get through 2.2 innings with minimal damage. He was a strict pitch count and was removed after his 50th pitch of the night. Taylor, who’s been a revelation this season, didn’t allow a hit over the next 2.1 frames, tacking on three strikeouts as well. However, the only Rumble Pony reliever that’s been arguably better than him has been Uceta, who’s followed up an injury-plagued 2018 with a dominant 2019 campaign.

The Mets might want to start stretching out Kiensa and deploying him as a starter for the 2020 campaign. As a starter for the Fireflies in 2019, he’s hurled 14 innings of three-run ball. He’s turned it up a notch in the second half, pitching to a 2.05 ERA over 30 innings. Yesterday, Kisena turned in his finest start of the season, striking out six over 6.2 innings, facing a lineup that included Josh Jung, the eighth pick of the 2019 draft. With a few more starts like that, he could emerge as another promising starting pitcher rising up the ranks of the Mets minor-league system.

The Fireflies scratched across three runs, which was enough to take down the Crawdads with Kisena’s strong start. Rasquin’s seventh-inning homer was the difference-maker. Sharp collected two hits, his second one being his 12th double of the season. He has some of biggest raw power among Mets farmhands, but has found it difficult to translate both that and his hit tool into games this season

Can someone confirm that the St.Lucie Mets losing 13 games in a row is not good? With their 6-5 defeat at the hands of Willians Astudillo‘s honorary team, the Mets have set a franchise record with their 13 consecutive loss. Rennie had a pretty solid outing, but was killed by his defense, which allowed three earned runs to score. Manny Rodriguez was the main culprit as his throwing error in the fifth led to three more runs to score in that inning.

LF Zach Ashford: 4-5, 2B, 2 RBI, R | .258/.361/.399

The Mets offense wasted an above-average night. Zach Ashford had a four-hit night while Mitch Ghelfi and Manny Rodriguez also had multi-hit efforts. All of the Mets’ damage came during their five-run fifth. After Ashford singled in Hansel Moreno and Blake Tiberi to take the lead and Matt Winaker hit a sacrifice fly, Rodriguez hit a booming line into left field to extend the lead to 5-1. However, over the next two frames, Rennie would proceed to give the lead right back.

Ashford was given a promotion to St.Lucie to finish off the season and he’s started off strong, racking up five hits over his first three games.

Vermont (31-39) 3, Brooklyn (39-30) 2 F/10 Box

This one had to go to extras to determine a winner. But unfortunately, the Cyclones weren’t the victors in this contest. In the tenth inning, Matt Mullenbach uncorked a wild pitch that allowed the go-ahead run to score. That pitch ruined an impressive outing by Valentino, who limited the damage to two runs over 5.1 innings. He also struck out eight.

Much like their fellow affiliates, the Cyclones struggled with making contact last night. As a team, they struck out 13 times. However, they had solid offensive showings from both Garay and Reyes, who both contributed multiple-hits outings. Reyes has emerged as a player to keep an eye on with his increased defensive versatility and quality offensive production this season. That being said, he’ll need to work on his plate discipline as his current 2.8% walk percentage doesn’t cut it.

Johnson City (34-33) 9, Kingsport (34-33) 4 Box

Mets lost a crucial game last night. They were sitting a game ahead of the Bristol Pirates, the Elizabethtown Twins, and the Johnson City Cardinals, but after last night’s loss to the Cardinals and Elizabethtown’s win, they are tied with the Cardinals. Tomorrow’s game will decide the season.

The Cardinals knocked out Loaiza before the second inning was over. It went down as a season-worst outing for Loaiza, who gave up more runs than outs recorded. Loaiza did get a little bit unlucky with his defense as Christopher Pujols committed a key error that led to two unearned runs in the first and a passed ball on a strikeout led to the three-run second.

After struggling mightily with the GCL on the outset on his career, he’s slashing .318/.388/.591 over his last ten games.
Half of the Mets’ hits came courtesy of the catcher O’Neill. Freddy Valdez recorded his first hit in the Gulf Coast League with an RBI single in the second inning. Federico Polanco has recorded eight stolen bases in only 14 games with the GCL Mets.

Taijeron has had an uninspiring August after mashing a monster July. Lee has recorded multiple hits in each of the last three games he’s started. The Mets offense didn’t do much, scoring their lone runs in the sixth and seventh innings after the game was already out of reach.

Santana’s last four starts have been rough, as he has given up 24 runs (22 earned) in 20.1 innings, raising his ERA from 3.99 to 5.66. His recent performances are not exactly helping his case to be used as a spot starter in case the Mets need him. Rumbelow’s first appearance for the Mets organization was successful, as he looks to rebound from an ugly season with Tacoma.

Despite getting only five hits, Binghamton won in large part because of Gimenez’s two-run homer. It was just his second home run of the month, and eighth of the year. He has still gone back to struggling overall in the month of August after a very solid July.

Peterson bounced back solidly from a rough start in which he gave up seven runs in 2.2 innings. Ryan has been on a roll, and has actually been quietly dominant since June. Through 11 innings thus far in August, he owns a 0.82 ERA. Uceta has also been pitching great, lowering his ERA to 1.52 as he has thrown 14.2 consecutive scoreless innings.

Baty, who’s. struggled in Kingsport overall but has been turning it on as of late, had his six-game hitting streak halted, although he increased his impressive walk rate. The strong 17-year-old catcher Alvarez had his second multi-homer game in his last three games. While he hasn’t lit up the league like he did in the GCL, Alvarez has still been really good for Kingsport. Pujols, Scott Ota, and Tanner Murphy all homered in the win, which was fueled by a seven-run sixth inning.

Flexen has started in his last two appearances, pitching three innings and four innings respectively despite his transition to a relief role. 12 of Zamora’s last 13 outings have been scoreless, as he gets his season back on track after a rough spell. Nogosek held his impressive 0.00 Syracuse ERA, as he has now not allowed an earned run in 25 innings over 18 games.

Gimenez broke an 0-f0r-14 stretch with a two-hit game. He has still hit just .130/.226/.152 in August in an inconsistent season. The Rumble Ponies scored their lone run on an RBI single by Michael Paez in the bottom of the ninth, but their comeback attempt fell short.

Jannis had arguably his best outing of the season, striking out a season-high 12 batters. In his last two starts combined, he has struck out 22 in 13 innings while allowing only one earned run. He has been successful overall in Binghamton, with a 3.49 ERA, but has struggled to a 22.95 ERA in two starts for Syracuse.

Torres has been hit around in Binghamton as he returns from injury, although he has given up only one earned run in six innings for the Rumble Ponies since recording four successful appearances in the GCL.

Bohanek had the biggest hit for them, hitting a solo homer in the fifth for the Mets’ only run of the game.
The Mets offense scored a single run in four of the first five innings to build a lead which they would not surrender. One day after his second three home run game of the season, Rivera had two extra bases in Friday’s game, including his 23rd home run of the season. In August, he is hitting .423/.464/1.077 with five home runs. Herrera has cooled off recently and is hitting just .172/.172/.310 with eight strikeouts in seven July games.

The young trio of Mauricio, Vientos, and Newton led the Fireflies to a dominant eleven run offensive performance. Mauricio and Vientos, in particular, have been heating up this month, with the pair hitting .355/.344/.452 and .407/.467/.741, respectively, so far in August. Brian Sharp also homered in Friday’s game.

James has been solid at limiting runs at times this season, but his mediocre strikeout and walk numbers (28:24 K:BB ratio over his last 10 appearances) make it difficult to consistently shut down the opposition.
The Cyclones had a huge offensive game that was fueled by an outstanding 10-for-19 performance with runners in scoring position. Every player in the starting lineup had at least one hit in Friday’s game. Taylor has impressed in a limited sample with Brooklyn, with four of his nine hits going for extra bases. He was just a home run short of the cycle on Friday night.

The Mets hit five home runs in their offensive outburst, with Rene Rivera also homering and raising his OPS to .806.

Oswalt, who has quietly had a solid season for Syracuse, had one of his better starts of the season on Saturday. While he gave up four runs, they were all unearned, and he struck out eight while walking none. Flexen pitched an inning as he continues to transition to his new bullpen role. Zamora is finally busting out of his slump, with four straight scoreless appearances.

Binghamton (49-46) 8, Akron (43-56) 2 Box Score

The Rumble Ponies got a power surge in the fifth, blasting four home runs in the inning. Quinn Brodey also homered for Binghamton in the 14-hit attack. Five different Ponies collected multiple hits.

Smith, who impressed in St. Lucie with a 3.05 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 85.2 innings, had an okay Double-A debut, He allowed just three hits and two runs in 5.2 innings, although he did walk four and only strike out one. It will be interesting if he can keep his strikeout numbers up in the higher levels going forward. Blackham had another good outing, continuing his very good first full season in Binghamton.

Clearwater (51-46) 3, St. Lucie (52-46) 0 Box Score

After an awful first three months, Winaker is starting to figure it out with a .318 average and .789 OPS in July. Overall he has still struggled in St. Lucie after posting an .803 OPS last year in Columbia.

RHP Tylor Megill (L, 0-1, 5.40 ERA): 5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K

Megill impressed in Columbia, posting a 2.61 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 31 innings, so this was his first start in High-A St. Lucie. It was a respectable but unspectacular debut, giving him something to build off of going forward. Hernandez threw three perfect innings; he’s been better lately with a 2.84 ERA in July.

Columbia (38-58) 6, Greenville (46-54) 3 Box Score

Mauricio recorded his second straight multi-hit game, although he has cooled down a little bit overall in the second half. After a brief hot stretch, fellow top infield prospect Newton has gone 0-for-hist-last-9. Vientos is the hottest of the trio right now, with a .972 OPS in July.

Coming off his best start this year, Acosta was more wild in Saturday’s start, but he still found a way to limit the damage. He has a 1.65 ERA with 42 strikeouts in 32.2 innings this year.

Brooklyn (20-14) 6, Connecticut (16-19) 1 Box Score

Avant is already 24 and has struggled at every level. Avant and Reyes both contributed to a four-run fifth inning, along with two bases loaded walks.

Cleveland recorded his second straight start with no earned runs allowed. Parsons’s second professional appearance went a lot better than his first, as for starters, he actually got an out this time.

Bristol (15-16) 3, Kingsport (14-17) 1 Box Score

Astudillo, brother of the Twins’ Willians Astudillo, got back on track with a home run after two hitless games. Baty’s early struggles in Kingsport continued, as through 41 at-bats he has the lowest average on the team.

RHP Michael Otanez (L, 2-2, 3.31 ERA): 7.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, ER, BB, 6 K

RHP Brendan Hardy (0-1, 4.05 ERA): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Otanez has been a pleasant surprise after his struggles in the GCL last year. Particularly, his strikeout numbers have been impressive, with 44 in 32.2 innings. Seven innings was the longest start of his season.

GCL Cardinals (11-12) 3, GCL Mets (12-8) 0 Box Score

Zach Ashford LF: 1-2, 2B, 2 BB, .286/.394/.858

After struggling in Brooklyn to start his pro career, Mets sixth-round pick Ashford has gotten off to a solid start in the GCL, as he hopes to make his way back up quickly. Bohorquez has also fared better in the GCL after he was underwhelming in his first seven games for Kingsport.

RHP Josh Wolf (0-0, 0.00 ERA): 1.0 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Wolf, the Mets’ 2019 second-round pick, made his professional debut on Saturday. He threw one inning, allowing a double to his first batter but striking out two of the next three and escaping unscathed. Suarez was key in middle relief, providing scoreless frames. However Colina allowed three runs in the seventh, the only runs scored in the game as the Mets took the loss.

DSL Brewers (23-19) 6, DSL Mets2 (18-24) 5 Box Score

The Mets2 were helped out by four wild pitches, a balk, and a hit by pitch, along with three hits by Campos. They rallied in the ninth, bringing in a fifth run on a sacrifice fly by Jan Carlos Osorio, but it fell short.

Good morning, Mets Fans!!

Today, Noah Syndergaard(6-4, 4.68 ERA) will look to turn his inconsistent season around as he’ll take on rookie Zac Gallen (0-1, 4.50 ERA). The game can be viewed on WPIX and 880 WCBS at 6:10 p.m.

The Mets kicked off the second half of the season by losing to the last-place Marlins. Todd Frazier contributed his 12th home run of the season, but little else went right for the 40-51 Mets. Jason Vargas had his worst start of the season, allowing six earned runs.

Brodie Van Wagenen addressed the media prior to yesterday’s game. He confirmed the team would trade away short-term pieces at the trade deadline while poking a little bit of fun at himself, saying “They came and got us”. He also reaffirmed that Mickey Callaway will remain as skipper for the remainder of the season and added that Jed Lowrie is currently sidelined with a new injury, this time a right calf strain.

Latest Mets News

This marks the fourth time the former Mets star has been caught with the illegal substance.

The deadline to sign drafted amateur players came to close yesterday at 5 p.m EST. The Mets fared pretty well, inking 22 out of their 30 draftees to deals and finishing $23,830 dollars underneath the second tax penalty bracket. The Mets will keep finding him playing time especially now that Dilson Hererra has opted out. In all seriousness, the .518 slugging in weird to see. The Mets might have accidentally remained in the PCL. Tebow has had a tough season so last night was good to see.

Santana continues to fashion as more of an innings eater in Syracuse. He’s been better than some of their other starters is not standing out. Gilliam has seen his walks go up in Syracuse but he is bound to figure it out. He had the stuff and makeup to start his professional career in Binghamton.

Erie (43-37) 5, Binghamton (40-40) 4 Box Score

Cecchini has been continuing his rehab. He should be able to find a spot in Syracuse if and when the Mets feel he is ready. It has really been a struggle for Gimenez though. He’s had his share of injuries this season and just has not found his swing yet. Perhaps some time off in the All-Star break is just what he needs.

Taylor was one of the pieces in the Ike Davis deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He’s actually been quite solid as a reliever. In his last 10 outings, he has gone 17 innings and has had 26 strikeouts to just three walks. In Binghamton, he has had 17 strikeouts to just two walks over 11 innings. It remains to be seen how his stuff has played up but it is a nice development nonetheless.

Charlotte (45-35) 9, St. Lucie (41-40) 3 Box Score

Zanon remains one of the most athletic guys on the field but his low contact and low power is a bad combination. Vasquez continues to show off a good eye at the plate but his lack of power at first base hinders him going forward.

Rennie has not been as good as last year, granted he is pitching in higher levels now. Simon has been in and out of the bullpen and rotation across multiple levels. Renteria has great stuff but is still working on harnessing it.

Vientos has been hitting .316 over his last 10 games. He is starting to get into a groove in this hitters valley of doom. Mauricio continues to keep pace with everyone. He’s making contact but is still trying to find the power stroke.

James continues to struggle in a place where he should be thriving. The stuff just does not match the results. The stuff has also taken a step back from where it was. A lot of these other pitchers were college relievers whom the Mets added in the 2018 draft.

Brooklyn (10-7) 7, Hudson Valley (8-10) 4 Box Score

Mangum has had a solid first two games in Brooklyn. The speedy centerfielder should be able to thrive in Brooklyn and earn himself a late-season promotion to a higher level. He has a role as a pinch runner at the very least to any of the contending teams in the organization. Genord is putting up some video game numbers currently. The college slugger hit his fourth homer of the season, a three-run shot.

Acosta has been very good in this early part of the season. The righty has 25 strikeouts to just six walks in 18.1 innings this season. The lanky righty is still just 20 and has the frame to grow and add more velocity too. He’s definitely caught my eye early on.

Kingsport (7-7) 4, Bristol (6-8) 3 Box Score

Palmer was an athletic infielder the Mets drafted late in 2018. They went over to sign him and he also bulked up in the offseason. He’s a pretty interesting prospect going forward. Ota hit for a ton of power in college but his bat speed might not produce the same results. He did hit a walk-off single in the game though.

Guzman has posted 18 strikeouts as compared to just four walks over the course of 13.2 innings this season. The improvement of strikeouts is something to keep an eye on. Escorcha has jumped straight from the DSL so his progress might take some more time.

GCL Marlins (5-1) 10, GCL Mets (4-3) 2 Box Score

Genuinely have no idea why he is in the GCL. He is well ahead of Mauricio at this time last year and that is saying something. He broke the Mets record for the IFA bonus and it is pretty easy to see why. He will likely be in the top-10 of our midseason prospect list.

Valdez is the main attraction here. The big right fielder has light tower power so he should be fun to watch more, hopefully as soon as next year in the GCL or Kingsport.
