Both the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants entered this season as National League contenders. We are 120 games into the season and the Mets enter this August series at .500 with a 60-60 record. Mets fans envisioned the defending National League champions would be leading the division at this point. Instead, the opposite has occurred, as the Mets have had a disappointing season to this point. They enter this series 10.5 games out of first in the NL East and 4 games out of the second wild card sport.

The Giants (66-54) enter the series 1.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and currently sit as the number one wild card team. The Mets kicked off their ten-game road trip in Arizona, losing two out of three at Chase Field, including a 13-5 blowout in the series finale.

The four-game set at the beautiful AT&T Park will kick off with two aces. Jacob deGrom (7-5 2.30 ERA) will face off against Madison Bumgarner (11-7 2.11 ERA) on Thursday night. Bumgarner is gaining steam in the National League Cy Young race as he leads the league in games started (25), complete games (4), innings pitched (170.2), second in the league ERA, and third in strikeouts (189). DeGrom is also sneakily in the Cy Young race, as he in the middle of an eight-start stretch in which he has a 1.52 ERA, allowing no more than one run in six of those eight starts. Bumgarner owns the Mets, posting a 4-0 record and 1.03 ERA against them in his career.

The Mets will not catch a break Friday night after facing Bumgarner, as they will face Johnny Cueto (13-3 2.97 ERA). The Mets will send the young lefty Steven Matz (9-8 3.40 ERA) to the mound. Matz is coming off the best start of his career, throwing 7.1 innings of no-hit ball for the Mets last Sunday against the Padres at Citi Field. The Giants will not be intimidated by the lefty, as they are hitting .263 against lefties this season, as compared to the .256 average they have totaled against righties.

Game three will feature Bartolo Colon (10-7 3.38 ERA) against the lefty Matt Moore (7-9 4.14 ERA). Most of the Giants lineup will be happy to see Big Sexy on the mound since they have had great success from him. Over the past five seasons, check out Giants players’ averages against Colon: Crawford .444, Pagan .400, Panik .500, Pence .500, and Posey .429. Only four players have hit against Matt Moore, who will be making his 4th career start in the National League.

The series finale will feature two pitchers with luscious locks, as Noah Syndergaard (10-7 2.76) will take the hill against Jeff Samardzija (10-8 4.24 ERA). Syndergaard is looking for his second win on the road trip after he picked up the Mets only win in Arizona, giving up two earned runs and striking out 8 in 5.2 innings.

These two teams are built on pitching and we will see some of the best, as this series will feature four of the best pitchers in the National League. The Mets are treading water and really need to at least tie this series to consider it a success. The Mets enter this series dead last in team batting average (.255) while the Giants have the 5th lowest team ERA in baseball (3.74) If the Mets fail in San Francisco, Terry Collins could be managing for his job in St. Louis, the last leg of the August road trip.

Tuesday, June 7, 2016
PNC Park • Pittsburgh, PA
LHP Steven Matz (7-1, 2.60) vs. LHP Jonathon Niese (5-2, 4.36)
SNY • WOR 710 AM • ESPN 1050 AM

The New York Mets turn to Steven Matz as they look to bounce back from Sunday’s 1-0 loss against Jon Niese and the Pirates in the first game of tonight’s doubleheader.

The last time the Mets played the Pirates in a doubleheader was September 19, 2004 in Pittsburgh. The Mets lost both games, losing Game 1, 1-0 and falling in Game 2, 6-1. The Mets played one doubleheader last year, losing both games (3-1 & 2-0) to Washington on October 3 at Citi Field.

The Mets went 0-6 vs. the Pirates last year. It was the first time in team history they were swept in a season series by Pittsburgh. New York has lost seven straight to the Pirates dating back to June 29, 2014.

Steven Matz is 11-1 in 15 regular season games in the majors. He has won seven straight decisions and is 7-0 with a 1.51 ERA over eight starts during that stretch. Matz has issued nine walks and struck out 52 this season.

Mets Lineup

Curtis Granderson – RF

Asdrubal Cabrera – SS

Yoenis Cespedes – CF

Neil Walker – 2B

Wilmer Flores – 3B

James Loney – 1B

Michael Conforto – LF

Rene Rivera – C

Steven Matz – LHP

Pirates Lineup

Josh Harrison, 2B

Andrew McCutchen – CF

David Freese – 1B

Jung Ho Kang – 3B

Starling Marte – LF

Francisco Cervelli – C

Gregory Polanco – RF

Jordy Mercer – SS

Jon Niese – LHP

Matz is 7-1 over 9 games and a 2.60 ERA over 55.1 innings this season. His last outing isn’t as bad as it looks, where he allowed 3 ER over 5.2 innings. He was smooth sailing through 5 and then things fell apart in the 6th (and then really fell apart for the Mets in the 8th).

This will be his first time facing the Pirates in his major league career and no one on the Pirates roster has faced him.

The Mets finally get a chance to strike against Jon Niese. He’s 5-2 this season over 11 starts and 64.0 innings with a 4.36 ERA. Things are better for Niese of late, in his last four starts he has pitched 24.0 innings with a 2.25 ERA and a 2-0 record. (So at least in his perspective, he has the Mets right where he wants them) This will be his first time facing the Mets, since he is a homegrown Met. A few Mets have seen Niese though:

Walker 2-13

Granderson 3-9

Loney 1-7

Cabrera 0-3

Rivera 0-2

Let’s Go Mets!

Jon Niese – LHP

Wow, this is it… The final Mets lineup of the season. I’m surprised that Travis d’Arnaud isn’t playing after getting the day off yesterday, we’ll ask Terry about that later on during his pre-game.

Lucas Duda batting second and Daniel Murphy batting cleanup for the second day in a row. Sorry, but I just can’t wrap my head around Duda batting second – I don’t care what his OBP is.

Mike Baxter has been enjoying a week full of starts while one of Juan Lagares or Matt den Dekker rides the pine. Why you ask? I haven’t a clue…

With Centeno, Tovar and Lagares up the middle, this might be the best defensive alignment we’ve seen all season long. All three have dazzled on defense and one player told me that Centeno and Lagares may be the best at their positions in baseball. Quite a rave.

After going 4-4 with a 5.32 ERA in 12 starts before going on the disabled list on June 3, Marco Estrada has rebounded to post a 3-0 record and a 2.26 ERA over his final eight outings since coming off the DL on Aug. 7.

Jon Niese also missed a large chunk of time between June and August, spending nearly two months on the DL with a partial tear in his rotator cuff. He has been stellar since returning on Aug. 11, going 5-2 with a 3.00 ERA in his last nine starts.

Brewers shortstop Jean Segura and Mets left fielder Eric Young Jr. are locked in a battle for the stolen base crown in the National League. Entering Sunday’s game, they are for the National League lead in stolen bases, with 44.

Game Preview

The season is finally coming to an end and despite how difficult it has been at times, I’ll still wake up tomorrow being disappointed there is no Mets baseball to follow, no on the field optimism about play in a future year, etc. At least the Mets are ending the year on a high note as they induct Mike Piazza into the New York Mets Hall of Fame today. The last game of the year will feature Jon Niese squaring off against Marco Estrada.

Jon Niese will be making his 24th start of the year. So far he has pitched 137.0 innings with a 3.74 ERA and an 8-8 record. In his last three starts he has pitched 20.1 innings with a 3.10 ERA. Niese has started against the Brewers four times pitching 19.0 innings and allowing 14 earned runs, which brings his ERA to 6.52. The Brewers have the following numbers on Niese:

Ramirez 4-14, 2B, HR
Lucroy 3-8
Gomez 1-5
Aoki 1-3
Bentancourt 0-3

The Mets bats try to break out the lumber for a final show against Marco Estrada who is 7-4 over 120.0 innings of work this year with a 4.02 ERA. In the month of September, he has pitched three games totaling 19.0 innings with a 1.74 ERA. In his career he has pitched in 5 games against the Mets totaling 4.1 innings where he has allowed 7 earned runs. However, very few of these Mets have seen him:

Murphy 0-1
Tejada 1-1
Wright 0-1
Turner 0-1

Lets Go Mets!

The Mets have dropped two in a row following a 5-1 road trip. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games and are 32-37 since the All-Star break (15-20 at home). The Mets are 32-47 at home this season.

Rated the top Brewers prospect by MLB.com, Nelson will make his first Major League start in place of Wily Peralta, who was bumped because of a blister on his right index finger. Nelson was a September callup and has pitched five scoreless innings out of the bullpen in three relief appearances this month.

Though none of Harang’s three starts with the Mets have been pretty, he has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of them. Harang will receive one last start Saturday before heading into free agency this winter. The veteran right-hander has a 4.24 ERA in three starts with the Mets and is 0-1.

David Wright did not play in Friday’s 4-2 loss to the Brewers after getting hit in the head on Thursday and jamming his right thumb while falling to the ground. The swelling in his thumb had not gone down, making it hard for him to swing a bat. Collins says he will remain cautious with him.

Daniel Murphy has hit in nine straight games, going 12-37 (.324) and is hitting .339 (40-118) with 19 runs scored, 11 doubles and 18 RBI since August 28. Murphy is second in the NL with 185 hits and is eighth with 92 runs scored.

All-Star shortstop Jean Segura has sat out nine straight games with a strained left hamstring, but might return to the starting lineup on Saturday. Segura did not come off the bench on Friday, but he did have encouraging results in running drills at Citi Field. He is hitting .296 with 12 home runs and 49 RBIs, and is tied with the Mets’ Eric Young Jr. for the National League lead with 44 stolen bases.

Game Preview

The Mets and Brewers continue their final series of the season today as the Mets look to rebound from yesterday’s 4-2 loss. Today Aaron Harang gets the start again. On the season he is 5-12 over 137.1 innings with a 5.57 ERA. He’s pitched 17.0 innings over three games with a 4.24 ERA. He has not faced the Brewers yet this season, but because of all of his time with the Reds, he has the following numbers against Brewers:

Ramirez 21-61, 2B, 3B, 5 HR
Lucroy 0-5
Aoki 1-3
Bentancourt 0-3
Gomez 0-1

Jimmy Nelson is pitching in his fourth major league game today, making his first start. So far he has pitched 5.0 innings allowing 1 hit, 2 walks and four strikeouts. In the minors this year he pitched 27 games for 152.1 innings with a 3.25 ERA. It’s safe to say that he has never faced the Mets or anyone in the Mets organization in a major league game before.

Lets Go Mets!

David Wright appears to have escaped serious injury when he was beaned by Johnny Hellweg with an 86 mph changeup in the third inning Thursday. However he injured his thumb when he fell, and Collins said it’s still a little sore so he’ll be on the bench tonight. The Mets hope Wright will return to the lineup Saturday.

Yovani Gallardo is 3-3 with a 3.72 ERA in eight career starts against the Mets, including one complete game. Torres gave up two earned runs in 2 1/3 innings in his lone relief appearance against the Brewers. Gallardo will face Mets right-hander Carlos Torres, who is coming off a quality start against the Phillies, limiting them to two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks in six innings. Still, Torres has been much better out of the bullpen this season, working to a 1.47 ERA as a reliever against a 4.95 ERA as a starter.

Carlos Gomez was issued a one-game suspension from Major League Baseball on Thursday and sat out the opener against the Mets because of his participation in a benches-clearing incident against the Braves on Wednesday. Gomez, who was replaced in center field Thursday by Norichika Aoki, said he chose not to appeal the suspension because he did not want to risk it getting pushed back until the 2014 season opener.

With two stolen bases Thursday, Eric Young Jr. has caught Milwaukee’s Jean Segura for the National League lead at 44. And Young now firmly is targeting winning the league crown.

Game Preview

The Mets and Brewers play the second game of the series tonight as the Mets look for a couple of bright moments at the end of the season. First, the Mets will be looking to see if David Wright is ok after being hit in the head yesterday (I’m in the camp thinking he should at least sit out tonight, if not the rest of the season). Second, Eric Young stole two bases last night, now tied in the lead for stolen bases in the National League with 44, so now he has a few games to get the overall lead. Carlos Torres gets the start tonight as he goes up against Yovani Gallardo.

Torres is 4-5 over 32 games this year with 80.1 innings of work and a 3.36 ERA. He is 1-3 over 25.0 innings in September with a 4.68 ERA. In his career he has pitched 2.1 innings against the Brewers and has allowed 2 earned runs who have the following numbers against Torres:

Ramirez 0-3
Gomez 1-2, 2B
Lucroy 0-1
Aoki 0-1

Yovani Gallardo is 11-10 this season over 30 games with 174.2 innings and 4.23 ERA. In the month of September he has pitched 27.0 innings with a 3.33 ERA. In one start against the Mets this year, he allowed 4 ER over 6 innings of work. The Mets have the following numbers against Gallardo:

Wright 3-19, HR
Murphy 5-12, 2 2B
Duda 3-7, 2 HR
Tejada 2-6

Lets Go Mets!

Mets right-hander Dillon Gee entered the 2013 season with a goal of 200 innings pitched on his mind. Tonight he can reach that goal needing just seven innings against the Brew Crew in his final start of the season. “It means a lot,” Gee said after his last start. “One of the main goals, especially coming off an injury, was to hit that 200-inning mark. I haven’t been there yet.”

Gee has been impressive since his start at Yankee Stadium on May 30, going 10-4 with a 2.57 ERA and 103 strikeouts to 28 walks in 143 1/3 innings. “Dillon has just been doing that the entire second half,” Mets manager Terry Collins said. “He’s made pitch after pitch.”

Eric Young, Jr. has nine stolen bases in September, tied for the second-most in the majors, behind Billy Hamilton (13). He also has 26 stolen bases in the second half, the most in the majors..

Daniel Murphy is one of five major leaguers with 35 or more doubles, 10 or more home runs and 20 or more stolen
bases this season…He joins Mike Trout, Hunter Pence, Andrew McCutchen and Ian Desmond.

Outfielder Cesar Puello was removed from the Restricted List and placed on the Binghamton (AA) roster. To make room for Puello on the 40-man roster, the Mets transferred RHP Matt Harvey to the 60-Day Disabled List.

Game Preview

The Mets come back to Citi Field and bring the literally fighting Brewers back with them. Daisuke Matsuzaka finished off the Reds yesterday with a great start yesterday and won essentially without the offense involved. Today Dillon Gee gets the nod. On the see Gee is 12-10 over 31 starts and 193.0 innings with a 3.54 ERA. In the month of September, he has pitched two excellent games totaling 14.1 innings with 1 ER and two not so excellent games allowing 8 ER over 12 innings. In his career he has pitched 11.1 innings allowing 11 runs, 9 earned. The Brewers have the following numbers against Gee:

Lucroy 2-6, 2B
Ramirez 1-5
Aoki 1-3

The Mets bats get to face off against Johnny Hellweg who is 1-4 over 7 games and 6 starts in his rookie season. So far he has pitched 26.2 innings allowing 29 runs, 22 that have been earned (not the greatest of starts to a career). He’s been much better in his three starts in September then back in July. Now he has an ERA a bit about 5 instead of 7. Back in July he faced the Mets allowing 7 ER in 3.2 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Lagares 0-3
Murphy 0-3
Wright 1-2
Young 1-3

The Mets are 4-1 on their road trip which concludes today and are 7-3 in their last 10 games. The Mets are 31-35 since the All-Star break (16-17 on the road) and will play their final road game of the 2013 season today. New York is 40-40 on the road this year…The .500 road winning percentage is tied for the fourth-best mark in the National League.

Vic Black earned his first major league save last night closing out the 4-2 victory. Lagares leads all rookies and is tied for fourth in the majors with his 13 outfield assists. He also ranks fifth among NL rookies with 21 doubles, 10th with 33 RBI, seventh with six stolen bases and eighth with 25 multi-hit games.

Daniel Murphy has hit in six straight games, going 9-24 (.375) and is hitting .352 (37-105) with 19 runs scored, 10 doubles and 17 RBI since August 28. Murphy is third in the NL with 182 hits and is eighth with 92 runs scored. He also has 52 multi-hit games this season, tied for the fourth-most in the NL.

Game Preview

The Mets squeaked out a win last night against the Reds behind Murphy’s 13th homer of the season (remember when he led the Mets a few years ago with 12 on the year?). Anyway Daisuke Matsuzaka gets the start for the Amazin’s tonight. He is 2-3 over 6 games this season with a 5.52 ERA over 31.0 innings of work. In his last three games he has allowed 6 runs over 18.2 innings, but only 4 of those runs are earned, so he has a 1.93 ERA in that span, which is slightly unbelievable. He has never faced the Reds, but has the following numbers against a few of their players:

Choo 4-14, 2 HR
Izturis 2-9
Hannahan 0-6
Ludwick 1-1

Mat Latos is 14-6 over 31 starts this year with a 3.23 ERA and 203.2 innings of work. He is 1-1 over 4 starts in September pitching 28.2 innings with a 4.40 ERA. Against the Mets earlier this season he allowed 4 ER over 6.2 innings. The Mets have the following number against Mat:

Wright 2-14, 2B, HR
Murphy 5-12, 2 2B
Duda 3-9, 2 2B
Tejada 2-8, 2 2B
Young 2-8, 3B
Baxter 1-4
