Boston wasn’t a happy hunting ground for the New York Mets.

The Mets dropped two out of three to the Red Sox, losing three games in a row for the first time in 2025. Furthermore, New York dropped its second consecutive series.

Zero offense was the main driving force behind the two losses at Fenway Park. Not cashing in with runners in scoring position continues to be a huge bugaboo for this team, too.

Granted, the Mets did take the final game of the series to end a 2-4 road trip on a high. They will now open up a nine-game homestand on Friday, starting with a three-game series against the juggernaut Dodgers.

To that end, let’s get on with the show and dive into another edition of 3 Up, 3 Down …

SAVING THE DAY

Huascar Brazobán has been a revelation for the Mets this year. He’s been money, which was the case again on Wednesday night. The righty reliever entered the game in the fifth after Tylor Megill twice loaded the bases. Brazobán struck out Alex Bregman after a nine-pitch battle, escaping the jam and keeping the game tied. In total, he allowed just one hit and struck out four over 2.1 scoreless innings. As a result of his heroics at Fenway, Brazobán now owns a stellar 0.90 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 30 innings this year. He has emerged as one of the best stories of 2025 for the Mets so far.

OFFENSIVE SPARK

The Mets couldn’t get anything going offensively across the first two games against the Red Sox. Those struggles continued in the series finale. Praise the lord for Brett Baty, then. The third baseman was in the lineup for his defense, given his struggles against lefties. However, he hit an RBI single off Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet in the second to get the Mets on the board. Better things were to come. In the seventh, with the game tied and the bases loaded, Baty stepped to the plate to face another lefty in reliever Brennan Bernardino. Different left arm, same outcome. Baty blooped a clutch single to the opposite field to score two runs and give his team the lead for good.

Baty finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs on the night, solving his struggles against lefties and sparking an otherwise quiet offense. This has been quite the turnaround for Baty, who is proving daily that he belongs in the bigs.

BOUNCING BACK

Sure, Tylor Megill ran into a lot of trouble in the fifth inning of the series finale. If the bullpen didn’t save him, things could have gotten ugly. However, with that said, Megill did show a lot of promise in his latest start. He bounced back and righted the ship after a run of nightmare starts. Megill had allowed 15 earned runs and 11 walks in his previous four starts. However, on Wednesday, the righty allowed just one earned run on one walk and four hits. He also tied a career-high in strikeouts with 10. Granted, the meltdown that followed should spark some concern, as should the fact he has pitched five innings or more just once in his last four starts. Maybe Megill would work best as a multi-inning reliever. But, overall, he limited the damage and gave the Mets the kind of start they needed to have a chance to salvage one game from this series.

3 DOWN

OUTSIDE NOISE

It hasn’t been the easiest of weeks for Juan Soto. That’s putting it lightly. And, quite frankly, a lot of the noise has been pure and utter garbage. The fact remains that once Soto starts to hit at the level we know he’s capable of, everything will click into place. Furthermore, all the speculation and nonsense untruths will go quietly into that long goodnight. But, until then, the talking heads will continue to do their thing. There is no doubt that the breakout we’ve all been waiting for will come, and soon, but it didn’t happen in Boston. Soto went a combined 2-for-10 with two walks, four strikeouts and no extra-base hits. He also struck out three times in the finale, including striking out twice in a row without swinging the bat for the first time in his career. All in all, it was another tough few days for Soto. However, again, all Mets fans will know that it is only a matter of time until he starts hitting like the future surefire Hall of Famer we all know he is. You can take that one to the bank.

UNDER-THE-RADAR SLUMP

It is true that the entire offense has struggled as of late. It is also true that Juan Soto’s slump has garnered most of the attention. However, another member of the lineup is currently mired in an alarming skid, one we need to talk about a lot more. Brandon Nimmo just isn’t hitting right now. He went a combined 0-for-9 in Boston, striking out three times and failing to draw a walk. Consequently, Nimmo is now hitting just .105/.190/.158/.348 with no home runs, one extra-base hit, just one RBI and seven strikeouts over his last six games. Nimmo was once known for his ability to get on base and make things happen. At the moment, he’s a net negative in that lineup.

TIME TO WAKE UP

We’re sticking with the lineup because the lack of offense recently has been that bad. Other than the series finale, the lineup failed to produce against the Red Sox. They scored one run in the two losses against Boston, including being shut out in the second game. The offense did break out for five runs in the finale, but three of them came via Brett Baty. The point still stands that the top of the lineup is failing to produce, even if Francisco Lindor hit a home run on Wednesday. Lindor’s homer, by the way, snapped New York’s streak of 217 at-bats without going long. Furthermore, cashing in with runners in scoring position remains a huge problem. The Mets went 1-for-15 with RISP in the two losses, leaving 13 runners stranded on base. They were a little better in the finale, going 3-for-12 with RISP. However, despite Wednesday’s win, there is still plenty of work to be done by the offense, especially at the top of the order and when hitting in clutch situations.

It was a rough weekend in Boston for the New York Mets, who now look destined to be sellers at the Trade Deadline after losing a tough series to the Red Sox.

Now 4-5 since the All-Star break, 7.5 games back of the third wild card spot, and with just a 14.6% chance to make the postseason, per FanGraphs, the Mets have a razor-thin margin for error, which they didn’t help after losing two of three games at Fenway Park. A stagnant offense coupled with two garbage outings from the starting rotation doomed this team. Given how they’ve been an inconsistent hot mess all year, it will now take a miracle for the 46-53 Mets to snatch a wild-card berth.

3 Up

Canha The Assist King

There were very few bright spots from a weekend where the Mets lost two of three. However, one of the rare positives was a slice of history provided by Mark Canha on Sunday. The veteran, who could be a candidate to be dealt at the Deadline, became the first Mets’ outfielder with three assists in a game since Endy Chávez on June 4, 2006, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com. Canha displayed his versatility and professionalism in all three plays. He began his special night by throwing out Jarren Duran at home plate, who was trying to score on an errant throw to third base. Canha then got Rafael Devers out at third in the top of the third inning, before throwing out Triston Casas at second base.

In a week where some of his teammates committed a comedy of defensive errors, Canha proved on Sunday night that he’s a steady and reliable presence who can get the job done in a multitude of different ways. That is surely going to be an attractive proposition for a contender looking to add a solid veteran to the mix at the Trade Deadline. Canha has played pretty much everywhere for the Mets this season, and his versatility is a skill set that offers superb value to any team.

Mauricio’s Big League Case

What else does Ronny Mauricio need to do in order to earn a call-up to the majors? It was yet another big weekend for the prospect who has mashed at an insane level all year long. And, if the front office weren’t paying attention before, they will be in the wake of Saturday’s events. Stepping up to the plate for Triple-A Syracuse, Mauricio sealed an 8-7 walk-off win over the Buffalo Bison in the most dramatic and explosive way possible by absolutely blasting a 440-foot monster of a home run with an exit velocity of 113.2 mph. It was Mauricio’s 16th home run of the year and he’s currently hitting .295 with 56 RBIs and a .851 OPS. He also reached base four times on Sunday with two hits and two walks.

Ronny Mauricio with an absolute tank of a walk-off home run for Triple-A Syracuse:

If the Mets do end up selling, then it would make perfect sense for the front office to call up Mauricio sooner rather than later so they can assess what they have in-house. Mauricio has held up his end of the bargain by absolutely raking in the minors, and now he deserves a shot in the bigs. With the offense continuing to come up short, it makes perfect sense to give Mauricio a chance to showcase his talents on the biggest stage sooner rather than later. There’s nothing to lose at this point.

Alonso Shows Sign Of Life

One of the biggest and most significant driving forces behind the Mets’ struggles this year has been the inability of the offense to get things going. A lot of the buck lies with Pete Alonso, who began 2023 on an absolute tear but has since been mired in an all-time slump. Alonso is on pace to record career lows in a number of offensive categories, and he’s also committed a handful of unfortunate errors at first base recently. Prior to July 20, the slugger was a meager 5-for-44, batting just .113. That came off the back of a miserable 10-for-66 stretch in June.

However, the Red Sox series teased tantalizing signs that maybe Alonso is on the cusp of breaking out of his slump. He went 5-for-11 at the plate in three games at Fenway, hitting two doubles and a triple. During the doubleheader on Saturday, Alonso recorded three extra-base hits, two of which were mighty close to being home runs. He looked locked in again at the plate and, while a second-half comeback may come too late to save the Mets’ season, Alonso returning to the peak of his powers will be crucial for his confidence heading into 2024.

3 Down

Is Scherzer Cooked?

We may be reaching the point where Max Scherzer‘s time as a Met can officially be labeled as a bust. And there’s a big enough sample size now to suggest that the future Hall of Famer may have waved goodbye to his best days. Scherzer has struggled all year, and he endured yet another nightmare start in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday. The 38-year-old matched an unwanted career-high by allowing four homers against the Red Sox, and he’s now given up a total of 22 home runs in 100 2/3 innings this year. Oh, and to add further insult to injury, Triston Casas became the first rookie to hit multiple homers off Scherzer in a single game. Not great, Bob, not great.

Overall, Scherzer allowed five earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks over six innings. His ERA has now ballooned to an ugly 4.20. It hasn’t been a good year for the veteran ace to say the least, and it is feasible to wonder if Scherzer is cooked. He’s unlikely to be moved at the Trade Deadline, but there may be some tough discussions to be had in the winter if Scherzer is unable to right the ship and get back anywhere close to his usual dominating best.

Carrasco Implodes

Max Scherzer wasn’t the only Mets starter who was tormented and beaten up on at Fenway Park over the weekend. Carlos Carrasco didn’t fare much better, either. In fact, Carrasco’s start on Sunday can only fairly be labeled as a disaster such was the rapid nature of the implosion. The righty was shellacked early and often as he allowed five earned runs on 10 hits with two walks, before being taken out of the game in the third. Carrasco has now endured two consecutive rough outings, and Sunday was the fifth time in 14 starts that he has allowed at least five earned runs. A collision with Jarren Duran in the first inning added to Carrasco’s pain, who gave his team no chance to win on Sunday thanks to a nightmare start.

The offense Comes Up Short Again

Sunday’s finale in Boston highlighted two troubling trends for the Mets, both of which are connected. Firstly, this offense continues to be consistently bad, particularly in big spots, and secondly, this team is now 4-9 in rubber games of a series this season. That latter stat is a key reason why the Mets are in their current predicament, and the lack of offense has been a driving force behind that. It was on full display on Sunday as the Mets put up just one run all night, who had two runners on in the eighth but just couldn’t take advantage. Granted, the offense did put up a combined total of 11 runs in Saturday’s doubleheader, but the inability to produce in rubber games has hurt this team all year long.

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets (46-52) sent Carlos Carrasco to the mound at Fenway Park on Sunday Night Baseball to try and win the rubber-game against the Boston Red Sox. After dropping Game 2 of the series Saturday, where Max Scherzer struggled thanks in large part to the long ball, along with the offense, Carrasco and the bats followed suit once again Sunday.

Carrasco did not last past the third inning and was responsible for five of the six Red Sox runs in the Mets’ 6-1 loss. Getting off to a rocky start in the bottom first inning, he surrendered two hits and one run to give Boston a 1-0 lead right away.

The third inning was where the cookie really crumbled. Six-straight hits and four runs later, the Mets had enough of Carrasco. As a parting gift, Carrasco left the bases loaded for Drew Smith, who surrendered two of the runs via an RBI single from Yu Chang as well as a wild pitch. Boston had a 5-0 lead exiting the third inning.

In all, Carrasco had another subpar outing, allowing 10 hits, five runs, two walks, while striking out only two. The worst part? He only lasted 2 1/3 innings, putting major strain on the bullpen once again.

Luckily, that bullpen was decent behind Carrasco. Trevor Gott had a clean inning of work, striking out one and only surrendering a single hit in the fifth, David Peterson struck out a pair in the sixth, and Adam Ottavino had a scoreless outing. The only blemish was when Dominic Leone giving up a 413-foot solo shot to Rafael Devers.

As for the offense, or lack thereof, New York’s bats remained silent while their starting pitching faltered. While the Red Sox had 10 hits through three inning, and 15 by the end of the game, the Mets had six after the final out. Francisco Lindor drove in the only Mets’ run with an RBI single in the sixth inning.

To add insult to injury, Pete Alonso was struck with a pitch in the ninth inning right on the knee. He stayed in the game but was visibly in a lot of pain. Buck Showalter after the game said he [Alonso], “was pretty sore.” Luckily, according to Alonso himself, he said, “I’ll be in there on Tuesday.”

Once again, it was a disappointing result for a team that needs a win on almost a nightly basis to get back in the playoff hunt. As the losses continue to pile up, so will the trade rumors. Notably veteran Mark Canha was asked about the impending trade deadline after the game, “It’s something that’s not under my control and as an athlete I’m just trying to control what I can control. It’s not really anything that I have any say or power over, so there’s no point in me focusing on that.”

With the loss, New York drops to 46-53 on the season. As a result, they are 7.5 games back of the San Francisco Giants who own the last Wild Card spot.

Player of the Game: Brandon Nimmo

Nimmo was the only Mets’ player with two hits Sunday night. Nimmo’s single in the sixth inning moved Danny Mendick to second, where he eventually scored after Lindor’s RBI single. Nimmo also beat out an infield single in the eighth inning. He accounted for a third of the Mets’ hits on Sunday night.

Statistic of the Game: Canha’s Hat-Trick Of Assists

Mark Canha is the first Mets’ outfielder with three assists in a game since Endy Chavez on June 4, 2006, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com.

It took Canha until his 3,179th inning in left field to record an assist that didn’t involve another player In other words, his first one as a left fielder where his throw went directly to the player who got the tag out, according to Mark Simon of Sports Info Solutions.

After the game, Buck Showalter spoke on the heads up plays by his veteran outfielder, “I think tonight was a great example as to why people like having Mark Canha on their team. He can play third, he can play first, and he can play all three.”

On Deck:

The Mets (46-53) will have the day off Monday before heading to the Bronx for the second and final series with the New York Yankees. Justin Verlander is projected to take the mound for the Mets in Game 1 of the series against Domingo German. The series will only be two games.
