It was a rough start last night for the Mets offense as each of the first seven batters struck out to start the game leading to a total of eleven strikeouts through the first five innings. The Mets would break through in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a two run home run from Travis Taijeron to cut the Red Wings lead to 4-2. The Mets would continue to chip away with a run in the top of the seventh inning on a bases loaded RBI single by Adeiny Hechavarria to pull within one. David Thompson would tie the game in the top of the eighth inning with a solo home run to left center field.

With yesterday’s original scheduled starting pitcher, Drew Gagnon, called up for service in Queens, Chris Mazza was promoted from (AA) Binghamton to make his first start of the year. Mazza only allowed a walk through his first 3.1 innings of work before hitting a batter and allowing two runs to score on three straight singles in the top of the fourth inning. Mazza would allow two more runs to score in the fifth inning on a home run by Luke Raley after a fielding error by David Thompson and a errant throw by Danny Espinosa on a double play attempt. He would settle back in though with a 1-2-3 inning with 2 Ks in the sixth to end his night.

Daniel Zamora appeared in relief of Mazza and was superb, striking out three of the five batters he faced. Even though he faced three right handers during his appearance, Zamora would not be allowed to face the right handed Wilin Rosario as Eric Hanhold was summoned from the bullpen to face him with the score tied 4-4. The move did not work out though as Rosario launched an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall to give the Red Wings a 5-4 lead. Hanhold would strike out the next two batters to finish his night but ended up taking the loss.

With the team down 4-0 after the top half of the third inning, Andres Gimenez would open the scoring for the Rumble Ponies with an RBI double to drive in Sam Haggerty for his second RBI of the young season. The Ponies would tack on three more in the fourth inning, the first of which came on an RBI single by Kevin Kaczmarski driving in Arismendy Alcantara from second base. The next batter, Braxton Lee, would follow up with a two run double to left field to bring home Dario Pizzano and Kaczmarski to tie the game up at 4-4. The Ponies offense would struggle to drive in runs the rest of the game as the team combined to go 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position the rest of the way.

Peterson was a ground ball machine to start the game as he generated six straight ground ball outs to open up the game. Things unraveled in the third inning though as some of those ground-balls started finding holes. Peterson wasn’t helped by his defense either as a throwing error by Sam Haggerty and a fielding error by Joshua Palacios allowed two runs to score followed by both of those batters scoring on a two RBI single by Santiago Espinal to give the Fisher Cats an early 4-0 lead. Peterson would pitch into the sixth inning before handing off an inherited runner to Ryder Ryan but the runner would score on a passed ball by Patrick Mazieka to tack on one more unearned run to Peterson’s ledger and give the Fisher Cats a 5-4 lead.

Zack Jones would follow Ryan, tossing a clean seventh inning, but, things would fall apart for him in the eighth inning. A single, two walks, and another defensive miscue on a fielder’s choice would allow a run to score leading to him being pulled with the bases loaded in favor of Matt Blackham. Unfortunately, the first batter he would face, Santiago Espinal, would clear the bases with a grand slam to left field extending the Fisher Cats lead to 10-4. Blackham would strike out five of the next seven batters he would face.

All of the St. Lucie scoring came in the bottom of the fourth inning with Desmond Lindsay kicking things off with a one out solo home run to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. After two singles and walk loaded the bases, Blake Tiberi would drive all three runners in with a double to left field to extend the lead to 4-0. Another walk would put two runners on for the rehabbing Todd Frazier who would proceed to launch one to deep left center field for a three run home run to cap off the scoring giving the Mets a 7-0 lead.

Wilson bounced back nicely from his poor start last time out, shutting out Fort Myers for five innings last night while allowing only four base-runners. Campos and Campusano both provided two innings of work each to close out a pretty easy victory for the Port St. Lucie team.

Ronny Mauricio had himself a fantastic day at the plate racking up four hits on the night including a triple in the top of the fifth inning which turned into a run when Walter Rasquin drove him in on an RBI single. It’s Mauricio’s second four hit game this week and his fifth multi-hit game this season as he continues to perform as one of the youngest players in the South Atlantic League. Rasquin would drive in the second run of the game in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single to score Jose Miguel Medina from third to give the Fireflies a 2-0 lead. Mark Vientos started the game at 3B but was removed in top of the fifth inning for pinch hitter Wagner Lagrange. While no reason was given, Vientos did fail to run out a double play in the third inning.

Four Fireflies pitchers combined to hold the Braves to one unearned run on only five hits and no walks allowed. Jaison Vilera bounced back from the worst start of his career last time out producing his best start of the 2019 season with six shutout innings.

After giving up an early 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning, a walk by Danny Espinosa followed by singles for Rajai Davis and Travis Taijeron set up the chance for an immediate return inning in the bottom half of the inning. Rymer Liriano would drive one in by drawing an RBI walk but Syracuse was unable to cash in anymore as Dilson Herrera flied out and Tim Tebow struck out with the bases still loaded. In the bottom of the second inning, after a David Thompson lead-off walk, the Mets would score one more on a RBI double by Rene Rivera to tie this up at 2-2. Unfortunately, the Syracuse offense would go quiet after that netting only two base hits the rest of the way.

Despite allowing an early two-run home run to Wilin Rosario in the first inning, Hector Santiago settled in and turned in a solid start allowing only two hits the rest of the way while striking out a total of seven batters. Being not fully stretched out yet, Santiago was taken out after only 75 pitches and replaced by fellow lefty Ryan O’Rourke who turned in an excellent three inning performance to keep Syracuse within striking distance. The Red Wings would blow the doors open though in the top of the ninth inning scoring five runs against right hander Jacob Rhame who allowed three hits and two walks in the inning.

St. Lucie (4-3) 4, Tampa (2-5) 3 Box Score

The Port St. Lucie Mets racked up nineteen total base-runners but struggled to cash in on their numerous opportunities as they went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position leaving twelve runners on base. They did score four runs on the night with three of them coming during Quinn Brodey’s at-bats. In the bottom of the first inning with no outs and the bases loaded, Brodey grounded into a 6-3 double play but it allowed Blake Tiberi to score on the play to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, Brodey once again came to the plate with the bases loaded and no outs and hit a ball deep enough to left field to allow Blake Tiberi to score on the sacrifice fly. Hansel Moreno was also able to score on the same play due to a throwing error by the Tarpons 3B Oswald Cabrera. The Mets fourth run of the day came in the bottom of the fifth inning with the bases loaded (again) and two outs when Cody Bohanek drove in Desmond Lindsay on an RBI single to give the Mets a 4-0 lead.

Campusano was pressed into emergency service as the game’s original scheduled starter, Tommy Wilson, was unable to take the field as he was still feeling the side effects of a hit-and-run vehicle accident he was victim of. He would give the team five super efficient innings of shut-out baseball as he allowed only two hits and struck out three with only 42 pitches. The Tarpons would cut into the Mets lead in the bottom of the seventh inning as RF Tyler Hill would launch a three run homer off Marcel Renteria to make the score 4-3. Conner O’Neil though would shut the door on the Tarpons comeback attempt with a two innings shut down performance to nail down his first save of the season

The Fireflies offense was quiet for most of the night but the two runs they did score ended up being enough to get the team’s third win of the season. In the bottom of the second inning, after back-to-back singles by Juan Uriarte and Brian Sharp to lead off the inning, Jose Medina would send a fly ball deep enough to left field to allow Uriarte to score from third base to give the Fireflies a 1-0 lead. The team’s second run would come in the bottom of the sixth inning in odd fashion. With the bases loaded and OF Bradley Marquez the plate, Braves RHP Luis Mora balked for the second time in the inning allowing Vientos to score giving Columbia a 2-0 lead.

• RHP Willy Taveras (1-0, 0.00 ERA): 5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 4 K, Win

Woods-Richardson, Taveras, and Zabeleta combined to shut out the Rome Braves today allowing only six hits, striking out eight, and not walking a single batter. Woods-Richardson looked solid today but was limited to only 41 pitches as the Mets continue to bring him along slowly while managing his workload. Taveras turned in his second straight solid piggyback performance adding to his four innings of shut out ball his last time out. Zableta earned his second save of the season turning in his fourth straight clean inning to open the 2019 season.

The doubleheader scheduled between the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and the Portland Sea Dogs was postponed due to inclement weather.

Not much to talk about in this game as the Scorpions closed out their 2018 season with a loss to the league leaders. The Scorpions will finish the year with a 14-15-1 record, last in the AFL East Division but good enough for fourth overall in the league.

Stat wise, Peter Alonso finished the year as the league leader in games played (27), doubles(7), home runs (6), and total extra base hits (13) and second in RBIs (27).

The championship game between the Peoria Javelinas and the Mesa Solar Sox will be aired on MLB Network on Saturday, 4 p.m.

MLB vs Japan All-Star Series

Samurai Japan 5 – 3 MLB All-Stars

• SS Amed Rosario: 1-for-3, R, 2B, BB, K

The MLB All-Stars were in control for most of this game holding a 3-1 lead into the ninth inning but Kirby Yates inability to put batters away, combined with the excellent execution of small ball tactics, led to the Samurai Japan team scoring four runs in the inning and winning it.

Rhys Hoskins scored the first run for the MLB team in the bottom of the second with his first home run of the series over the right field wall giving them a 1-0 lead. This score would hold until the seventh inning as Kenta Maeda, Matt Andriese, Daniel Norris, and Chris Martin combined for six innings of shutout baseball allowing only five hits, no walks, while striking out four.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the MLB All-Stars would tack on an insurance run thanks to a RBI double by Juan Soto scoring Ronald Acuna from first base to give them a 2-0 advantage. Soto would give that run right back to the Samurai Japan team in the top of the eighth inning. With one out in the inning, right fielder Shogo Akiyama sent a soft liner the other way to left field that skipped past Soto when he made an ill-advised diving attempt to catch the ball. With Akiyama’s speed, he was able to circle around the bases for an inside the park home run before Soto could even get the ball back into the infield, cutting the lead down to 2-1.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Amed Rosario got in on the action with a sharp line drive that JUST got over the third baseman’s glove and into short left field. With Rosario hustling out of the box he was able to stretch it into a lead-off double. He would advance to third base on a J.T. Realmuto line out to right field and then score on a sacrifice fly to left field by Carlos Santana giving the MLB team a 3-1 lead.

The top of the ninth is where things went south for the MLB team. A lead-off walk and a stolen base Kazuki Tanaka, followed by an RBI single Seiji Uebayashi cut the lead down to 3-2 and put Kirby Yates in a tough spot right away. Unfortunately, Yates could not get out of the jam as Japan’s small ball tactics would take this game over. A sac bunt moved Uebayashi over to second where he would score from on another RBI single, this time by Kosuke Tanaka to tie the game at 3-3. Tanaka would steal another base and moved on over to third due to a throwing error by Realmuto. He would score two batters later on a suicide squeeze play to give the Japan team the lead and eventually the game.

It’s been a rough fall season for Andres Gimenez and he was on his way to another “0-fer” night after going hit-less in his first four at-bats. In the bottom of the ninth inning though, with the bases loaded and the Scorpions down 4-3, Gimenez delivered a walk-off, two RBI double to win it for the Scorpions and keep their season alive.

Peter Alonso also drove in a run yesterday, his 19th of the season, in the top of the first inning with a hard hit line drive to left field with the bases loaded to give the Scorpions an early 1-0 lead.

We also got to see Desmond Lindsay make his first start since November 1st. He grounded out in the first inning, struck out in the bottom of the fourth inning, and walked in the seventh and ninth innings. He was also one of the runners that scored on Gimenez’s walk-off double.

The victory, combined with the fourth loss in a row for the Salt River Rafters, keeps the Scorpions elimination number at one and pulls them within two and a half games of first place. They face the Salt River team tomorrow afternoon at 3:35pm EST.

Despite PCL-inflated numbers, Drew Gagnon‘s still having a solid season. Yesterday marked his 15th consecutive outing recording five innings or more. He’s been a quality innings-eater for the 51s and since he’s on the 40-man roster, he could be fulfilling that role for the Mets come September. Former Rookie-of-the-Year Chris Coghlan went 4-for-5 with two extra-base hits and two runs against the 51s pitching.

Chris Flexen will miss the remainder of the season recovering from meniscus surgery per Betsy Helfand of the Las Vegas Journal.

Although he hasn’t been hitting for a lot of pop, he’s posted solid on-base numbers. Binghamton scored quickly with two runs in the first frame due to an Andres Gimenez RBI double and a Terdoslavich RBI single. Will Toffey, who the Mets acquired in exchange for Familia, had a unique night, going 1-for-1 with career-high four walks. Keep in mind: he’s hit at a .311/.436/.477 clip since joining the Mets with a dislocated shoulder.

Matt Gage‘s first start with Binghamton went about as well as one could have hoped. After being released by the Giants Triple-A team, the Rumble Ponies gave him another chance and so far, he’s making them look like geniuses. Despite two strikeouts, he recorded eight fly-balls and eight ground-balls in his six innings. In a system that’s flush with quality relievers, Matt Blackham‘s flying under the radar.

Yesterday, the St.Lucie Mets scratched out a rare win thanks to clutch hitting from their table-setters. During their two-run sixth, Anthony Dimino homered to tie the game and two batters later, Gene Cone singled in Luis Carpio to give the Mets a lead they would not relinquish. Michael Paez tallied an insurance run with his ninth-inning homer.  Paez’s hitting streak now stands at 18 games.

A week after losing his no-no in the eighth inning, Michael Gibbons turned in another terrific start. He danced in-and-out of trouble throughout the night but managed to permit only one run. Even though he didn’t have a clean frame all game, he showed impressive control, striking out eight and only walking two batters. Seth Davis and Trey Cobb managed to hold the Hammerheads scoreless through the last two innings.

Columbia’s seven-game homestand has begun with a great start. Dionis Paulino‘s two-run single gave the Mets a one-run lead and the following batter, Carlos Sanchez‘s quickly doubled it with an RBI single. The next inning, the Fireflies scored two more runs on a Jose Brizuela RBI single and a balk. Every starter except for Edgardo Fermin and David Miranda recorded a hit.

Tony Dibrell had another strong outing spinning 5.2 innings of two-run ball. He’s continuing to show improved command, and he’s only allowed five walks over his past five starts. Darwin Ramos got Dibrell out of a sixth-inning jam with a clutch strikeout of Tanner Nishioka. Carlos Hernandez recorded his fourth save of the year with a five-inning save.

Hudson Valley (31-19) 5, Brooklyn (26-25) 4 Box

Before the game, Six Cyclones were named to the NY-Penn League All-Star game.

Brooklyn took advantage of a Jacson McGowan fielding error in the fourth to put two runs across the board. Anthony Dirocie tripled in Wagner Lagrange and later scored on the error. With their backs against the wall, the Cyclones rallied for two in the ninth. Three straight singles pulled the Mets within one and a Brian Sharp sacrifice fly allowed Brooklyn to tie up the game. It’s been a frustrating season for Walter Rasquin, who broke the Mets minors record for most stolen bases in a season last season. He’s only played 40 games this year.

Walker struggled as he was unable to get out of the fourth inning. He’s been bounced between the rotation and the pen this year with Kingsport and Brooklyn, but this was his worst outing of the year. A trio of Cyclones relievers pitched effectively for the next 4.2 innings, but after Brooklyn rallied for two in the ninth to tie up the game, Ronald Sanchez gave it right back. Sanchez has given up five runs in his first five Brooklyn appearances.

Elizabethton (25-18) 16, Kingsport (25-21) 10 Box

In the battle for first-place, Kingsport’s offense came out swinging. Ranfy Adon capped a five-run third with a three-run double. After Elizabethton tallied two insurance runs, Kingsport rallied with a three-run sixth. Yet again, Ranfy Adon came to the rescue with a three-run shot. His six RBI’s represented a career-high. Ironically, two of the most talented players in the Kingsport lineup, Luis Santana and Jarred Kelenic were the only two Mets not to get on-base. Also strangely enough, even though the Mets scored ten runs, they only recorded six hits.

Even though Kingsport lost, it was a tremendous game. At the start of the night, Kingsport was 0.5 games behind Elizabethton for first place in the Appalachian League. An eight-run third knocked out Nate Peden and slowed down a bit of Kingsport’s optimism. However, Kingsport rebounded for a five-run fourth and seemed primed to take the lead. But the Mets pitching failed their offense yet again. Allan Winans, Marbin Montijo, and Mitch Hickey allowed two runs each and effectively put the game out of reach. Ironically, Nelson Leon and near-7 ERA was the only Met hurler to have a scoreless outing.

GCL Astros (23-18) 4, GCL Mets (20-22) 3 Box

• 2B Sebastian Espino: 1-2, 3B, RBI, BB, .283/.336/.381

The Mets offense tallied three hits all game, yet scored three runs. Although they only recorded one hit in the sixth inning, they scored twice. Recovering MiLBer Desmond Lindsay played six innings and recorded a hit in his two at-bats. Ronny Mauricio is in a funk; he’s 2-for-his-last 21.

• Cesar Loaiza (L, 0-1, 1.08 ERA): 2 IP, 2 H, R, 2 K, BB

Bryce Hutchinson’s four innings were extremely impressive. He was the Mets 12th round pick last year and as long as he continues this production, he’s deserving of a promotion to Kingsport. His only blemish was an unearned run in the fourth.

DSL Mets1 (35-24) 7, DSL Yankees (22-34) 4 Box

• DH Andres Regnault: 3-4, 2B, 3 RBI, .327/.418/.567

DSL Mets beat up on the Yankees DSL affiliate, the DSL Yankees. The Mets scored early and often with Adrian Hernandez and Andres Regnault combining to go 4-for-7 with six RBI’s. Unfortunately, after being hit by a pitch in the eighth inning, Hernandez was lifted for a pinch-runner.

• Nixon Silva (W, 6-0, 1.24 ERA): 3 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 5 K, 1 BB

Adrian Aybar continued his stretch of having short, yet effective starts. He hasn’t pitched more than four innings this season, however, he also hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a single start. Nixon Silva is right behind Joshua Torres for the organizational lead by wins by a reliever.

DSL Rangers2 (38-18) 8, DSL Mets2 (27-29) 3 Box

• CF Jan Cabrera: 1-4, 3B, 2 RBI, .143/.341/.233

A sixth-run third inning by the Rangers meant the Mets offensive contributions came to naught. A two-run triple by Jan Cabrera accounted for the majority of the Mets runs, but it wasn’t enough to come back from the early Rangers onslaught. Wilker Velasquez was taken out of the game before the ninth inning; a reason wasn’t disclosed.

• LHP Brailin Gonzalez (3-4, 4.50 ERA): 2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 K, 4 BB

Brailin Gonzalez had a rough appearance. He left after the second inning and trio of multi-inning relievers functioned as mop-up men. Johan Armado particularly struggled as he pitched 1.2 innings of three-run ball. His ERA is now an ugly 10.38.

The 51s scored a run in the first after Jeff McNeil singled to lead off, stole second, and was brought home on a bases-loaded walk to Luis Guillorme.

In the third, Zack Borenstein blooped a one-out double to left and scored on a Kivlehan two-out single, giving Vegas a 2-1 lead.

Jose Lobaton hit his third home run of the season in the sixth to make it a 3-1 game, and the 51s tacked on two more in the eighth after a string of hits from Johnny Monell (double), Ezequiel Carrera (single), and McNeil (double).

Flexen walked five batters but was able to escape with just one earned run through his three innings of work. Tacoma scored in the second after a Kirk Nieuwenhuis leadoff double followed by a Seth Mejias-Brean single two batters later.

Sewald allowed the only other Tacoma run in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly that scored John Andreoli, who doubled with one out earlier in the frame.

Krol worked two scoreless innings, lowering his earned-run average to 5.87 through 7.2 innings with Las Vegas since coming over from the Los Angeles Angels.

Binghamton found themselves in a 3-0 hole after the first, but they were able to scratch a run off of the deficit in the second after Taylor led off the inning with a single, followed by a Nido double and an RBI single via Tim Tebow with two outs.

They added two more in the third on a solo homer from Michael and a two-out, RBI single from Nido. Allen hit his second home run of the season to lead off the eighth, cutting the Thunder’s lead to 7-4.

Trenton put three more on the board in the seventh against Daniel Zamora. A throwing error by Michael on a sacrifice bunt attempt scored one run, then Jeff Hendrix singled to score two later in the frame.

Blackham pitched the ninth and walked the bases loaded to start the inning, then walked in Trenton’s eighth run of the night in the next at-bat. Ryan replaced him and retired the next three batters in order to limit the damage.

It was a weird and tough outing for Flexen, who had been pitching pretty solidly until last night. The first batter he faced hit a triple and scored on the play because of a throwing error by second baseman Ty Kelly. He got hit around a ton in the second, but the inning was extended on an another error by Kelly that led to five unearned runs. Still, it was a very ugly outing with Flexen only throwing two innings on 66 pitches.

McGowan was not dominant, but got through three solid innings of relief behind Flexen. Purke was effectively wild, walking three in his two innings of work but not allowing a hit. Taylor continued his inconsistencies, while backup catcher Colton Plaia pitched his third scoreless inning of the season.

It has been a struggle for Marcos Molina. The once touted prospect has really struggled coming back from Tommy-John Surgery. He has been passed on the depth chart by Corey Oswalt and Chris Flexen and might have his spot on the 40-man in jeopardy in the winter or even sooner. Perhaps a move to the bullpen would help him regain his major league trajectory.

Roseboom struggled in Vegas but has been very sharp in Binghamton. He has struck out 13 of the 36 batters he has faced this season. Zamora has struggled this season but there is still hope he rebounds.

McNeil is hitting .277/.368/.614 while maintaining a low strikeout rate. He should really go up to Las Vegas soon. The biggest thing with him has been health and he looks healthy. His ground ball rate is also down which is why there is hope that his power is sustainable. Alonso is now trailing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the BA race but still leads the league in OBP and SLG. He got on base twice and then dropped his OBP.

Florida Fire Frogs (12-20) 8, St. Lucie Mets (13-17) 4 Box Score

• RHP Michael Gibbons (0-1, 2.70 ERA): 3 IP, 3 H, 3 R (2 ER), 4 BB, 5 K

Adam Atkins gave up four unearned runs and got the tough luck loss as a result. He has been solid in St. Lucie this year after struggling in the same league last year. Mcllraith did a nice job to save the rest of the St. Lucie bullpen after Michael Gibbons had a short start.

Nogosek has been really solid this year. He came over in the Addison Reed deal. He has struck out 18 out of 56 batters faced this year. He should go to Binghamton sooner rather than later.

Lindsay showed signs of life tonight. He walked three times and upped his OBP to .330 this year. He is hitting .212/.330/.259 but hopefully he uses this game as a spring board. Franco made his St. Lucie debut in this one. Overall, St. Lucie had their share of baserunners but left 10 runners on.

The 51s offense was quiet all game, with just five hits, all of which were singles. Two of them came from Cecchini, who has started to hit well in the last two games after a brief slow start. The only other hits came from Kelly, Matt den Dekker, and Bryce Brentz. Zach Borenstein drew the only two 51s walks.

Knuckleballer Mickey Jannis got lit up in his first career Triple-A start, which really shouldn’t be that surprising considering that Cashman Field is horrible for pitching to contact and relying on movement like knuckleballers do.

Plus, knuckleballers can be wildly unpredictable. Still, it’s disappointing to see after the 30-year-old posted a 3.60 ERA in Binghamton last year. Secrest relieved him in the fifth and gave up a couple more runs before getting out of the inning down 11-0. A home run off Secrest in the sixth made it 12-0, and a two-run homer off McGowan in the eighth capped the ugly night of Las Vegas pitching at a merciful 14-0.

On the bright side, Peterson pitched a very good ninth inning.

Akron (2-3) 6, Binghamton (3-1) 3   Box Score

All three Binghamton runs were pushed across as the team trailed 4-0 in the seventh inning. Levi Michael tripled to start the inning, and after Champ Stuart popped out, Andrew Ely, Peter Alonso, and Patrick Mazeika all walked consecutively.

A wild pitch during Mazeika’s at-bat plated Michael. Tomas Nido followed with a two-run single and John Mora laced a single to reload the bases with one out, but Binghamton was unable to push across what would have been the tying run.

The Ponies went out without a whimper, as the they could not muster a baserunner in the final two innings.

Marcos Molina’s season debut did not go according to plan, but the right-hander’s outing started out promisingly.

Molina retired his first six opponents, striking out the side in the second inning. Things started to unravel after that point as he gave up a run in the third and three in the fourth.

Gerson Bautista shined in his two perfect innings, punching out five of his six batters. Austin McGeorge uncharacteristically gave up a homerun, a two-run shot to Aruban-born Sicnarf Loopstok.

Tampa (3-2) 5, St. Lucie (1-4) 1   Box Score

St. Lucie was utterly dominated by the Tarpon’s triumvirate of Nick Green, Phillip Diehl, and Matt Frawley in this one. They managed just a single hit throughout the entire night, a Gene Cone single. Ian Strom scored St. Lucie’s lone run on a passed ball after he reached on an error in the third inning.

Gary Cornish made his season debut tonight for St. Lucie and pitched well in his five innings. More than anything, the runs he allowed were a product of bad catching behind the dish.

Brandon Brosher allowed two passed balls while Cornish pitched, both of which were succeeded by run-scoring hits. Adam Atkins was the first man out in relief and immediately allowed a homer to his first batter and singles to the next two, but settled in and kept the Tarpons off the board for the remainder of his outing.

Stephen Nogosek appeared for the second straight day, after hitting his only batter to force in the winning run the night prior.

Columbia rode its way to victory thanks to a huge, six-run second inning. That second inning featured run-scoring doubles from Scott Manea and Giovanny Alfonzo, a Matt Winaker sac fly, and a two-run blast by Jeremy Vasquez. The Fireflies tacked on two more runs in the third inning, and did not look back for the rest of the night.

6’9” Chris Viall’s season debut went well for the Fireflies. The right hander limited Hagerstown to just a couple of runs in his four innings. He threw 82 pitches in those four innings, a pitch count that is not as efficient as he would have liked. The Firefly bullpen was excellent in their five innings, as they allowed just five hits and a run, while punching out five.
