The New York Mets’ biggest need at this year’s deadline is undoubtedly bullpen depth. Adding an experienced, high-leverage reliever to help bridge to Edwin Díaz would be great. They could also benefit from acquiring a lower-leverage reliever who can fill a different role. I detailed some of those arms that could be of interest to the Mets ahead of the trade deadline.

DANNY COULOMBE

Position: RP B/T: L/L

Age: 35 (10/26/1989)

Contract Status: Free Agent after 2025 season

2025 Traditional Stats: 38 G, 7 GF, 7 HLD, 29 IP, 1-0, 0.93 ERA, 0.966 WHIP, 30 SO, 8 BB

2025 Advanced Stats: 458 ERA+, 26.3% SO%, 7.0% BB%, 2.95 xERA, 1.85 FIP, 3.29 xFIP, 1.6 bWAR, 1.0 fWAR

RUNDOWN

Danny Coulombe has been one of the more underrated left-handed relievers for quite some time now. Since 2020, he has been a reliable arm in the bullpen for both the Twins and the Orioles. Over the stretch, he has pitched to a 2.37 ERA across 173 appearances. After two strong seasons in the Orioles’ bullpen, Coulombe rejoined the Twins in the offseason. He previously pitched in Minnesota from 2020 to 2022. It’s safe to say that his performances from seasons prior have absolutely carried over.

Among pitchers with at least 20 innings thrown this season, Coulombe has the second-lowest ERA. Only the San Francisco Giants’ Randy Rodríguez (0.84 ERA) has been better. Coulombe is also one of five pitchers who have thrown that many innings and have yet to give up a home run. 6.2 hits allowed per nine and 2.5 walks allowed per nine are well below his numbers for his career.

Coulombe doesn’t throw particularly hard. His average velocity on the four-seam fastball is 90.2 MPH. He used four pitches regularly, including a cutter, a sweeper, a sinker, and a four-seam fastball. Opponents have a batting average below .200 against all of those pitches except the sinker. With the Twins on the outside looking in, an impending free agent in Coulombe is likely to be moved.

JAKE BIRD

Position: RP B/T: R/R

Age: 29 (12/04/1995)

Contract Status: Free Agent after 2028 season

2025 Traditional Stats: 43 G, 5 GF, 10 HLD, 52 1/3 IP, 3-1, 3.96 ERA, 1.395 WHIP, 61 SO, 21 BB

2025 Advanced Stats: 119 ERA+, 26.9% SO%, 9.3% BB%, 3.39 xERA, 3.13 FIP, 3.31 xFIP, 1.0 bWAR, 0.9 fWAR

RUNDOWN

Jake Bird has been a solid reliever for the Rockies since debuting in 2022. He has had some strong stretches in their bullpen, none better than at the start of this season. Over his first 28 appearances, Bird pitched to an impressive 1.41 ERA. Just one home run allowed over a stretch of 38 1/3 innings. On plenty of occasions, Bird was able to enter in difficult situations and limit the damage.

The last month and change has gone much worse for him. Since June 13, Bird has pitched to a 10.93 ERA across 15 appearances. His elevated ERA is partly down to himself, but the defense behind him has not helped either. During that stretch, Bird has a 5.81 FIP. Certainly not good, but the stark difference between that and his ERA is a knock on the position players. Ironically, he has pitched significantly better at Coors Field. Owns a 2.48 ERA at home versus a 5.79 ERA on the road. Similar sample size as well.

Bird throws three pitches nearly 97% of the time: a sweeper, a sinker, and a curveball. His curveball, slightly slower than his sweeper, has been his most effective weapon in 2025. Opponents are hitting .157 with a .157 slugging percentage and a 38.5% whiff rate against it. The Rockies are reportedly taking offers on the struggling Bird, even with the years of control. Curious to see what the package looks like.

REID DETMERS

Position: RP B/T: L/L

Age: 26 (07/08/1999)

Contract Status: Free Agent after 2028 season

2025 Traditional Stats: 42 G, 6 GF, 9 HLD, 2 SV, 45 1/3 IP, 3-2, 4.17 ERA, 1.390 WHIP, 55 SO, 19 BB

2025 Advanced Stats: 103 ERA+, 28.5% SO%, 9.8% BB%, 3.24 xERA, 3.20 FIP, 3.17 xFIP, 0.9 bWAR, 0.7 fWAR

RUNDOWN

Reid Detmers was drafted by the Angels with the 10th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. The hope was that he would rise up the system and eventually become a frontline starter in their rotation. To this point, it has not materialized that way. Detmers made 75 big league starts from 2021 till 2024. He went 16-28 with a 4.90 ERA across 385 2/3 innings. A significant sample size. After pitching to a 6.70 ERA in 17 starts last season, the Angels decided to pivot, at least in the short term. Detmers was put in the bullpen.

Initially, that transition could not have gone much worse. At the end of May, Detmers owned a 6.56 ERA across 20 relief appearances. Pitching for an inning or two in the middle of a game appeared uncomfortable for him. But Detmers has done a complete 180. Since the start of June, he has a 1.64 ERA across 22 innings. Detmers has also yet to surrender a walk in the month of July. Night and day compared to his outings early in the year.

With Detmers pitching in shorter spurts, his velocity has ticked up on both the four-seam fastball and the slider. Last season, the average velocity on those pitches was 93.8 MPH and 86.2 MPH. This season, they are up to 95.6 MPH and 88.5 MPH. Detmers’ curveball has been an effective weapon as well. With the Angels hanging around in the American League Wild Card chase, being sellers seems unlikely. Acquiring Detmers would likely require some version of an overpay.

CALEB FERGUSON

Position: RP B/T: R/L

Age: 29 (07/02/1996)

Contract Status: Free Agent after 2025 season

2025 Traditional Stats: 43 G, 2 GF, 9 HLD, 41 1/3 IP, 2-2, 3.92 ERA, 1.137 WHIP, 33 SO, 14 BB

2025 Advanced Stats: 110 ERA+, 19.4% SO%, 8.2% BB%, 3.02 xERA, 3.19 FIP, 4.21 xFIP, 0.5 bWAR, 0.6 fWAR

RUNDOWN

Caleb Ferguson signed a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates after spending time with the Astros and the Yankees in 2024. He got off to a fantastic start, owning a 1.88 ERA at the end of April. He has pitched well since, for the most part, although six earned runs allowed over his last 1 1/3 innings pitched have spiked his numbers significantly.

While the strikeouts are down at 7.2 per nine, he has managed to move in the right direction with the long ball. Ferguson is allowing 0.2 home runs per nine, well below his 0.9 home runs allowed per nine for his career. With his FIP at 3.19, it can be said Ferguson has had some bad luck hurt him at times.

With the Pirates bound to sell given their place in the standings, a few arms in their bullpen will be moved. Ferguson should be one of the cheaper lefties on the market, given where his numbers are at while factoring in his impending free agency.

RECOMMENDATION

Coulombe is a good fit for the Mets for a few reasons. First, adding a lefty to pair alongside Brooks Raley would benefit the veteran coming off such a significant injury. Second, Coulombe is on an expiring deal, so the return shouldn’t be too significant. The Twins are likely going to sell a few of their relievers, most of whom are garnering interest all across the league. Coulombe is one of them, and he would be a great fit with the Mets.

Although they welcomed veteran Brooks Raley back from injury on Friday, he’s currently the only southpaw in the big league bullpen, a less-than-ideal situation for a team with World Series aspirations.

At 35-years-old and in the midst of a breakout season, Coulombe would offer stability in that role. He’s been remarkably effective this year, allowing just two earned runs over 26 2/3 innings while striking out over a quarter of the batters he’s faced. His approach relies on movement and pitch variety rather than velocity, and and he’s handled hitters from both sides. Lefties are hitting just .208/.240/.229 against him, and righties have managed an even lower .163/.241/.204 line.

In addition to offering help from the left side, Coulombe could also slide into a setup role. With Reed Garrett and Huascar Brazobán dealing with wear and tear while Ryne Stanek battles inconsistency, the Mets could use another reliable arm to bridge the gap to closer Edwin Díaz.

Coulombe, who is earning just $3 million on a one-year deal, is a practical fit from a payroll standpoint. The biggest complication lies in Minnesota’s uncertain deadline direction. At just under .500 with a 47-49 record, the Twins could choose to buy, sell or both, making any deal for Coulombe dependent on how Minnesota views its postseason chances in the coming weeks.

Since Coulombe is on a one-year contract, acquiring him likely wouldn’t demand a significant prospect haul.

As it stands, the Mets only have four of these spots that appear solidified, leaving four more.

Those “locks” currently consist of Edwin Díaz, Reed Garrett, Dedniel Núñez, and José Buttó, of course, pending no injuries or trade. Also notable, all four of those arms are right-handed pitchers.

The Potential Internal Options

Other relievers currently on the Mets 40-man roster are Huascar Brazobán, Dylan Covey, Justin Hagenman, Kevin Herget, Max Kranick, Sean Reid-Foley, Danny Young, and Tyler Zuber. Traditional starting pitchers, Paul Blackburn, Tylor Megill, and Griffin Canning, may all be considered in a long-relief type of role as well.

Of the group of middle-reliever options, Young is the only left-handed pitcher. Further, of those, Brazobán (xERA below 3.64 in each big-league season) and Reid-Foley (2.15 ERA across 29 1/3 innings the last two seasons) are the only two that have seen any sense of sustained success in the big leagues.

Elsewhere, the Mets have non-roster invitees in Génesis Cabrera (LHP), Chris Devenski (RHP), Grant Hartwig (RHP), Anthony Gose (LHP), Oliver Ortega (RHP), and Rico Garcia (RHP) set to join them in camp. Additionally, minor leaguer right-handed relievers Trey McLoughlin (1.89 ERA across 33 1/3 Double-A innings in 2024) and Bryce Montes de Oca (struggled in 2024 after returning from elbow surgery) are other potential options.

Then, there is always a possibility that a current starter in the minor leagues can emerge as a bullpen option with the big club, such as Buttó did. Some names to keep an eye on are Blade Tidwell and Dom Hamel.

The External Options

Surprisingly, the bullpen market thus far through free agency has been extremely slow moving. There are still a plethora of higher-end options in Tanner Scott, Kenley Jansen, Jeff Hoffman, David Robertson, Kirby Yates, and Carlos Estévez. However, as president of baseball operations David Stearns has shown in the past, he usually builds his bullpen through lower-cost options.

There are still several that would fit the bill left. This list consists of Scott Barlow, Caleb Ferguson, Andrew Chafin, Ryne Stanek, and the list goes on and on. All signs point to Stearns either leaning more on internal options, or going shopping in this tier of player rather than the higher-tier of guys outlined above.

The Final Product

With all that being said, here is one option for how the Mets’ Opening Day bullpen can look:

The Locks (4):

Edwin Díaz (RHP)

José Buttó (RHP)

Reed Garrett (RHP)

Dedniel Núñez (RHP)

Free Agent Acquisitions (1+1):

Left-Handed (1):

Danny Coulombe

Jalen Beeks

A.J. Minter

Right-Handed (1):

Chris Martin

Paul Sewald

Austin Voth

Scott Barlow

Ryne Stanek

Surprise Camp Performer (1):

Génesis Cabrera (LHP)

Chris Devenski (RHP)

Grant Hartwig (RHP)

Trey McLoughlin (LHP)

Bryce Montes de Oca (RHP)

Long Reliever (1):

Griffin Canning (RHP)

Tylor Megill (RHP)

Paul Blackburn (RHP)

Take the first four, one from each external left-handed and right-handed reliever option, one from a potential camp surprise performer, and one on-roster longer reliever and you have your 2025 bullpen. This plan would fit David Stearns philosophy of relatively lower-cost options in his bullpen, yet potentially effective.

A bullpen is a vital part to any team, and, as we saw in 2024, is ever-changing, just because you do not get it right at the beginning of the season, does not mean it won’t come together. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how the Mets approach the unit the rest of the offseason.

Danny Coulombe

Position: RP B/T: L/L
Age: 35 (10/26/1989)

2024 Traditional Stats: 33 G, 29 2/3 IP, 2.12 ERA, 0.674 WHIP, 1-0, 32 SO, 5 BB
2024 Advanced Stats: 178 ERA+, 29.9 K%, 4.7 BB%, 2.88 xERA, 2.83 FIP, 2.94 xFIP, 0.5 fWAR

Rundown

In somewhat of a surprise, the Baltimore Orioles declined the $4 million option of Danny Coulombe earlier in the offseason, making him a free agent. The 35-year-old is coming off a two-straight seasons of superb play in Baltimore. Across these two years, Coulombe tossed 81 innings with a 2.56 ERA to go along with 90 strikeouts and only 17 walks. His WHIP was below 1.000 (0.951) and FIP backed up how impressive his traditional numbers were at 2.83.

So, why was the veteran’s option declined? It may have to do with some concern regarding injuries. Coulombe had hip surgery in 2022 and an elbow procedure in 2023, both leading to him missing considerable periods of time. Now, he will be entering 2025 at age 35.

Regardless, there is no doubt the only 5-foot-10 tall reliever can be extremely effective when healthy. Including the terrific last two seasons, since returning to the major leagues in 2020, Coulombe has a 2.69 ERA. There is also no doubt that he does what most left-handed do well in destroying left-handed hitters. Last season, opposing lefties had a .400 OPS against Coulombe. For his career, left-handed batters have a .607 OPS against him. He does the main job of any left-handed reliever extremely well.

Interestingly enough, Coulombe has done all of the above with a fastball that only tops out at just under 91 mph. He mixes pitches well (threw five pitches in 2024 more than 12% of the time) and doesn’t walk batters. If he stays healthy, he has all the ability to be one of the more underrated left-handed weapons out of the bullpen in 2025.

Contract

Coulombe earned $2.3 million in 2024. As mentioned above, instead of exercising his $4 million team option for 2025, the Orioles declined making Coulombe a free agent.

One would assume that Coulombe would like to get at least that on an open market. A full season of the performance he put up over the last two seasons in Baltimore would make him well worth a $4 million salary. Given his age and potential injury risk, a one-year deal makes the most sense, however, a two-year deal with another option would also be realistic.

Recommendation

In a left-handed reliever market that hasn’t seen a ton of action yet, Coulombe may be the most underrated option. He should come at a relatively cheap price tag, and healthy, should perform as one of the better left-handed relievers in the league, if his last two seasons are any type of indication. Of course, there is an injury risk. However, at likely below a $5 million price tag, the absorption of that, if injury would result, isn’t a big deal.

As for how he would fit, the Mets really do not have any established left-handed arms in the bullpen right now. Danny Young is the top option, however, he has only 52 1/3 major-league innings under his belt. The Mets also have Génesis Cabrera and Anthony Gose, but they are both non-roster invitees to spring training.

President of baseball operations David Stearns must add a legit left-handed arm to his bullpen. Despite any risk Coulombe may bring in terms of injury, the potential payout, at a minimal price tag, would be well worth any risk.

Lost in the shuffle of a terrific 2024 season was how large of a loss left-handed relief pitcher Brooks Raley was after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Losing Raley, who has quietly been one of the best left-handed reliever in the major leagues over the last few seasons, was a huge blow to a Mets bullpen who was largely up-and-down throughout the successful season.

His injury left Jake Diekman as the lone established left-handed reliever in the bullpen. Diekman struggled mightily, resulting in his departure from the club, and the Mets relied upon a pair of Youngs, Danny (4.54 ERA across 37 2/3 innings) and Alex (3.29 Era across 13 2/3 innings), the rest of the way.

It would behoove president of baseball operations, David Stearns, to address this area of the bullpen this offseason. The free agent market does have a few large fish at the top of the left-handed reliever market, in Tanner Scott, Aroldis Chapman, and the quickly-emerging Tim Hill. Outside of that, what else does the free agent market have to offer when it comes to southpaws?

Mandatory Credit: Tommy Gilligan-Imagn Images

Danny Coulombe

Jalen Beeks

Jalen Beeks had the pleasure of pitching in the high altitude of Colorado in 2024, before being traded to Pittsburgh to finish out the season. Before arriving in Colorado, Beeks spent back-to-back seasons with Tampa Bay after missing 2021 with injury. Beeks had an extremely successful 2022, posting a 2.80 ERA and 70 strikeouts across 61 innings.

However, in 2023, he posted a 5.95 ERA across 42 1/3 innings resulting in being placed on waivers after the season and subsequently claimed early in the 2023 offseason. Interestingly enough, in 2023, Beeks appeared to have been a victim of incredibly bad luck and fielding behind him. His FIP of 3.82 was 2.13 points better than his ERA and his xERA of 3.61 and starling xBA of .215 further told that story. The 5.95 ERA on the surface is extremely deceiving.

Regardless, he got a shot with the Rockies in 2024 where he posted a 4.74 ERA and 4.36 FIP in the high altitude before being dealt to the Pirates. He got much better, pitching in the more friendlier environment the rest of the season. With Pittsburgh, Beeks dropped his ERA to 3.92 and FIP all the way down to 3.12. His ERA+ was 109, well above the 100 average. With Pittsburgh, Beeks was much more the pitcher he was in his career-best 2022 season.

Further, in 2024, Beeks was terrific against left-handed hitters. He held lefties to a .202/.283/.287 slash line (.570 OPS). The three-pitch pitcher (four-seam fastball, changeup, and cutter), who does struggle with walks sometimes, would instantly fill a hole the Mets have had in their bullpen since Raley went down with injury early on in 2024.

Mandatory Credit: Orlando Ramirez-Imagn Images

Caleb Ferguson

The youngest arm on this list is 28-year-old Caleb Ferguson. Ferguson struggled mightily with the New York Yankees to begin 2024, before being trade to the Houston Astros in July. Following the deal, across 21 innings, Ferguson posted a 3.86 ERA and 2.88 FIP with the Astros, after holding marks of 5.13 and 4.28, respectively, with the Yankees.

Ferguson, as is the case with the rest of the arms on this list, excelled against left-handed hitting last year, allowing a .662 OPS. Over his career, lefties hold an OPS just a shade over .700. Interestingly enough, the same goes for right-handed hitters. So, Ferguson has shown the ability to succeed against both, which is helpful due to the three-batter minimum rule.

Over his career as a whole, Ferguson’s best work came over his five-year stint to begin his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers. With L.A., he posted a 3.43 ERA, including an outlier 2019 season where his ERA inflated to 4.84. Outside of that season, his ERA was sub-3.50 across the other four.

Ferguson has relied on a relatively high strikeout rate over his career (27.5%) to get hitters out. He has a four-pitch mix, featuring a four-seam fastball, cutter, slurve, and sinker. The best of which has always been his cutter. One of the areas that does get Ferguson in trouble is his walk rate; his 9.4% career average is almost a full percentage point over the big-league average.

Regardless, Ferguson provides any team with a younger arm, who has less mileage. He has also shown throughout his career to be effective against both left-handed and right-handed hitters, which helps tremendously given the three-batter minimum rule. If his new teams get the pitcher he was with the Astros to end the season, and the pitcher he was for the majority of his Dodgers career, he can be a force.

Scott Alexander

The 35-year-old Scott Alexander will be entering his 11th big-league season, as he is looking to join his fifth different team. Outside of the 2023 season (4.66 ERA), Alexander has posted a sub-4.00 ERA in every other season of his veteran career (excluding his six inning debut year in 2015). And, even in that one-off 2023 season, Alexander owned a FIP of only 3.26, so he was letdown big time by the defense behind.

Like the rest of the players on this list, Alexander excels at what left-handed pitchers do best; getting left-handed hitters out. Over his career, Alexander is allowing a .211 batting average and .564 OPS to lefty hitters. Last year, specifically, the 6-foot-2 southpaw held left-handed hitters to a .161 batting average and a .419 OPS.

Alexander, who only throws three pitches (low-90 mph sinker, slider, and changeup), had a very successful 2024 with Oakland. He posted a 2.56 ERA across 38 2/3 innings. Alexander excels at inducing soft contact on the ground, usually posting one of the highest ground-ball rates in the big leagues (66.8% career ground-ball rate, 43.2% is the major-league average). As a result, he also owns an extremely low home run rate (career 1.6%, which is much lower than the 3.1% MLB average).

With that being said, Alexander does not induce many strikeouts (career 6.75 K/9). He also did struggle with walks last season (9.4% walk rate), but for his career sits right around the major-league average. Regardless, Alexander would be an extremely cheap option for the Mets to fulfill their lefty specialist out of the bullpen.

Final Thoughts

It is still very early in the offseason, so the Mets’ plans have yet to come to the forefront. However, with a bullpen whose current top left-handed options consist of Danny and Alex Young, adding to that area should be high up on president of baseball operations, David Stearns, and staff list. Any of the above would be great additions and would all come at a relatively cheap rate.

Good morning, Mets fans!

Kodai Senga threw another bullpen on Wednesday.

“Now we’ll see how the next couple of days unfold and hopefully he’s facing hitters the next time he’s touching a mound,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. He said he expects that “next time” to be Sunday or Monday. Senga has not thrown a pitch for the Mets this season, as he has been on the 60-day IL with a shoulder capsule strain that he aggravated during spring training.

However, on the field, the Mets faltered for the first time in over a week as their seven-game win streak finally came to an end. Despite holding the Rangers to no hits through five innings, Sean Manaea left the game after 5 2/3 IP with a 3-3 score. Pete Alonso’s sixth-inning home run would be the last of the Mets’ scoring, not being able to mount up a final comeback and losing 5-3.

The Mets have Thursday off but the Amazin’s will look to get back in the win column on Friday as they head to Chicago to take on the Cubs in a weekend series. It will be José Quintana (2-5, 4.98 ERA) going for the Mets, against Shōta Imanaga (7-1, 1.89 ERA) of the Cubs.
