The Mets made history yesterday! Unfortunately, as per usual, the Amazins were on the wrong side of history.

With Thursday’s loss to the Cleveland Guardians, it was the first time in franchise history that the Mets were swept by Cleveland. This continued the Mets’ freefall as of late, continuing to lose series as they drop to seven games under .500, their lowest point of the season thus far.

Despite holding a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth and having one of his better performances of the season, José Quintana would give up a three-run blast to former Met Andrés Giménez to tie the game. The Mets were shut out the rest of the way, ending up in yet another loss. For a full breakdown of the game, click here.

Luckily, the Mets will return to Queens for a 10-game home stand, hosting three West Coast teams in hopes of grasping some sort of momentum. They start off with the Giants on Friday, with Christian Scott expected to get the ball for a 7:10 p.m. ET start time.

The Mets got a bit of good news on Saturday as Jacob deGrom threw from 135 feet on Friday and the result was that he felt good. “I’m not exactly sure when I’m supposed to touch the mound, but so far everything’s felt good,” said deGrom. deGrom missed the last three months with elbow inflammation. With the Mets’ rotation starting to take a hit, this news comes as a bit of a breath of fresh air for New York.

Couple this news with the Mets’ 8-2 victory over Philadelphia on Saturday, it was a nice second day of Memorial Day weekend for the Mets. They’ll go for the series sweep against the Phillies tonight at 7:08 P.M. ET.

The Chicago White Sox announced on Saturday, that prior to their series opener between their inner-city rival Chicago Cubs, they designated left-handed pitcher Dallas Keuchel for assignment. The White Sox recalled infielder Danny Mendick from Triple-A Charlotte.

Per Bobby Nightengale of the Enquirer, Tommy Pham was suspended for three games. He will miss the rest of the Reds’ series against the Giants. Trent Rosencrans of The Athletic elaborated on the conversation between Pham and Pederson. He said Pham said “disrespectful (explitive)” about the Padres and “(explitive) with my money.”

The Los Angeles Dodgers released a statement congratulating Russell Martin on his retirement and thanked him for his memories as a Dodger. This includes his career 0.00 ERA.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today & Audacy, the Los Angeles Dodgers have called up outfielder Kevin Pillar to replace infielder Max Muncy. Muncy was placed on the injured list. To make room for Pillar on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred Tommy Kahnle to the 60-day injured list.

Good morning and Happy New Year’s Eve Mets fans! As a whole, the 2010s were not exactly ideal for Mets fans, but they had a couple of bright spots in the middle of the decade (2015-2016). For better or for worse, in a few hours the 2010s will be in the past.

However, as our own Matt Musico wrote, the Mets are in a better spot heading into the 2020s than they were heading into the 2010s. So here’s hoping for a roaring 20s for the New York Mets! In regards to this last decade for the Mets, in the words of Howie Rose, you can “Put it in the books!”

Jeff Passan of ESPN reports the Chicago White Sox have signed free agent LHP Dallas Keuchel. Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic reports it will be a three-year deal worth between $54 – $56 million.

The Keuchel signing comes after the White Sox have struck out in their previous attempts to add a front line starter to join a rotation that already has Lucas Giolito and Michael Kopech.

Notably, the White Sox had offered the biggest contract to Zack Wheeler, but Wheeler instead opted to sign with the Phillies who are located closer to his wife’s family.

For Keuchel, he is signing much earlier than he had done last year. Heading into the 2019 season, Keuchel had faced a depressed market due to a number of circumstances including the Houston Astros having offered him the qualifying offer.

Keuchel signed with the National League East-leading Atlanta Braves on June 7, which was days after the MLB Draft. He made 19 starts going 8-8 with a 3.75 ERA, 1.367 WHIP, 3.1 BB/9, and a 7.3 K/9.

Three of those 19 starts would come against the New York Mets. In those games, Keuchel was 1-0 allowing four earned in 18.0 innings walking two and striking out nine.

Boras Boys’ Market Beginning To Heat Up

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com shed some light on the respective markets of free-agent left-handed starters Hyun-Jin Ryu and Dallas Keuchel, as well as outfielder/designated hitter Nicholas Castellanos — all of whom are clients of mega-agent Scott Boras.

Boras tells Feinsand “the markets for both pitchers have been deep”, adding “clubs are identifying their needs, and we’re certainly narrowing the corridor of finality” and that both veteran hurlers are “deep in negotiations” with an undetermined number of teams.

Keuchel, 31, made his season debut for the Braves on June 21 last season after lingering on the market until earlier that month (signed a one-year, $21.2 million deal on June 7). Over 18 starts for Atlanta, Keuchel pitched to a 3.75 ERA with 91 strikeouts and 39 walks.

Ryu, 32, led the majors in ERA last season (2.32; 3.10 FIP), racking up 163 strikeouts with just 24 walks over 29 starts for the Dodgers (182.2 innings).

Feinsand lists Texas, Toronto, St. Louis, the White Sox, the Twins, and both Los Angeles ballclubs as reported suitors for Ryu, and named San Diego, the Cardinals, the White Sox, Angels, and Cubs as teams “said to be in” on Keuchel.

Castellanos, 27, slashed .289/.337/.525 with 27 homers, 58 doubles, and 73 RBIs over 151 games between the Tigers and Cubs last season.

As a below-average defender (-9 DRS, -4.9 UZR/150 over 1,206.2 innings in the outfield last season), Castellanos may be best suited for an American League team, but Boras apparently views his client as a viable corner outfielder.

“When you look at the [corner] outfield aspect of [the market], it has been a market where everyone is kind of taking care of their pitching staff because many other teams have gone after that product, so they’re forced to do it even if they wanted to address the outfield. That whole market has yet to hit.”

Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports the Cubs and Castellanos are both open to discussing a return to the north side, also noting “Castellanos sees the Giants, Rangers, and Cubs as three teams who value him for more than just his offense” (referring to his positive clubhouse presence).

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that infielder Eric Sogard, 33, signed a one-year contract with the Brewers with a club option for 2021.

Sogard hit .290/.353/.457 with 13 homers, 23 doubles, and 40 RBIs over 110 games (442 plate appearances) with the Blue Jays and the Rays last season.

Also via Rosenthal, three southpaws signed minor league contracts on Wednesday:

• Ross Detwiler, 33, returned to the White Sox on a minor league deal after putting up a 6.59 ERA with 46 strikeouts and 27 walks over 18 appearances last season (12 starts; 69.2 innings).
• Fernando Abad, 34, agreed to a minor league contract with the Nationals (4.15 ERA, 9 K, 3 BB, 21 relief appearances; 13 innings)
• Danny Coulombe, 30, and the Twins came to terms on a minors deal (4.56 ERA, 26 K, 11 BB, 27 appearances; 23.2 innings).

Good morning Mets fans! The New York Mets (83-76) split their four-game series with the Miami Marlins (56-103) after dropping Thursday’s contest at Citi Field by a score of 4-2. They now close out the season with a three-game home series versus the Atlanta Braves (97-62).

The Detroit Tigers tied the MLB record for most losses at home in a season after losing their 59th home game on Thursday. They also set the record for worst single-season run differential at home (-221), which was previously held by the 1883 Philadelphia Phillies (-215).

James Wagner of The New York Times wrote a story on knitters who attend baseball games to knit.

In the AL Wild Card race, the Oakland Athletics sit in the first Wild Card spot with a one-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays. The Cleveland Indians trail the Rays for the second Wild Card by two games with only three games remaining.

The Philadelphia Phillies removed all banners depicting Odubel Herrera from Citizens Bank Park as Herrera is being investigated for his domestic violence charge, per Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

The Phillies (35-27) hold a 2.0 game lead over the Braves (33-29) for first place in the National League East. Those two teams are followed by the Mets (30-32; 5.0 games back), Washington Nationals (28-34; 7.0 games back) and Miami Marlins (23-37; 11.0 games back), respectively.

The Braves fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1, the Marlins lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 and the Nationals were defeated by the San Diego Padres 5-4. The Phillies had the day off.
