The 2024 New York Mets went on quite the run after a closed door team meeting. Will history repeat itself?

After Saturday’s loss the Mets held a players-only meeting, for whatever that is worth. The team has spin spiraling of late, losing 12 of their last 15 games. Saturday’s loss featured two things that have become common during the losing streak: leaving tons of runners on base, and one big inning from the opposing team that puts the game out of reach.

The Mets’ rotation has been remade over the last couple of weeks and they need Frankie Montas to build off of his successful Mets debut last week. In his first start against the Braves, Montas tossed five scoreless innings allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five.

The Mets’ bats will get a look at Mike Burrows this afternoon. Over seven games, six starts (30 1/3 innings), Burrows has a 4.45 ERA, 4.76 FIP, 1.319 WHIP, and a 96 ERA+. Burrows had a rough two starts to the season in late May, allowing nine runs over 8 1/3 innings. He’s been a lot more effective in May, allowing seven runs over 22 innings while striking out 25 batters (2.86 ERA, 3.40 FIP).

The only hitter on the Mets who has seen Burrows in a game is Juan Soto (0-for-1, BB).

Game Notes

Prior to Sunday’s game, the Mets announced they signed LHP Richard Lovelady to a major-league contract and designated LHP Colin Poche for assignment.

Prior to Sunday’s game, the Mets organization released RHP Grant Hartwig. He had been playing with Triple-A Syracuse.

Saturday, Brooks Raley continued his rehab, for High-A Brooklyn, posting another scoreless outing.

Saturday, prospect A.J. Ewing stole his 50th overall base of the season, which has been split between Single-A and High-A.

Three Things To Watch For

How long can Burrows pitch? Burrows longest outing this season was 5 1/3 innings, which he has done twice this year. The most pitches he has tossed in a game is 88 and has only pitched above 80 pitches twice over seven games. He’s also off schedule. Burrows made a start on June 20 and then had come in as long relief for Paul Skenes on June 25. He ended up pitching 2 1/3 innings of shutout ball, tossing 31 pitches. The Pirates ended up knocking Burrows back a day to get more rest.
Frankie Montas pitch selection. Let’s take a look at Montas’ pitch selection from his first outing of the season. Montas used his four seamer 33.8% of the time, which was nearly identical to the 33% of the time he used it in 2024. Montas used his sinker 28.8% of the time in his debut, which was about 50% more than the 19.3% of the time he used it in 2024. The Braves also got two of their three hits against his sinker. As Montas gets more innings, let’s see if the Mets keep asking him to use his sinker more than last year.
Hitting with RISP. The Mets were doing well hitting with runners in scoring position in the two games they won against the Braves earlier in the week. It’s been a disaster in Pittsburgh though. Over the last two games, the Mets have gone 2-for-17 leaving 18 runners on base.

For Double-A Binghamton, Zach Thornton threw a career-long seven shutout innings in the Rumble Ponies’ extra-innings loss to the Hartford Yard Goats. The left-hander was efficient, needing just 76 pitches to strike out six Yard Goats while allowing only three hits. Syracuse Mets utility man Jared Young homered twice, giving him four over his last three games.

The 23-year-old southpaw tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and no walks. Newly promoted Anthony Nunez also tossed a scoreless inning in his first Binghamton appearance. Brooklyn’s bats carried them to another victory, beating Winston-Salem 7–2 at Maimonides Park in Coney Island. Eight of the nine Cyclones hitters recorded a hit, with Jacob Reimer, Eli Serrano, A.J. Ewing, and Carson Benge all collecting extra-base hits. Serrano reached base four times, raising his season OPS to .908 – second on the team behind Reimer. The Cyclones have four of the league’s top 10 hitters.

The St. Lucie Mets couldn’t complete their late comeback, falling 11–9 to the Daytona Beach Tortugas. After trailing 6–0 by the third inning, the Mets rallied for seven runs in the eighth and ninth to tie the game at 9. But the Tortugas answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, and the Mets’ offense ran out of steam.

Colin Houck launched his fourth home run of the season, continuing an impressive May in which he’s slashed .294/.419/.529 (.948 OPS).

Morning Briefing: Mets Grab Rubber Match Over Arizona

Good morning, Mets fans!

Also, good morning to any Knicks fans out there!

A good Wednesday for the guys in blue started in Arizona where the Mets took the rubber match against the Arizona Diamondbacks by a score of 7-1. Despite having some control issues early on, Kodai Senga found the range and went six innings of shutout ball, lowering his ERA to 1.16 on the season. Along with that, Juan Soto had his second multi-homer game of the season, going 2-for-4 with two long balls and three RBIs. Click here for a full game recap!

The Mets have an off day on Thursday and will start a three-game set against the Chicago Cubs on Friday at Citi Field. The projected starters are Clay Holmes, Tylor Megill and Griffin Canning.

Mets Sign Veteran Left-Hander

On Wednesday, the New York Mets announced that they had signed a left-handed pitcher, Colin Poche, to a minor league contract. He will report to Triple-A Syracuse.

Poche, 31, has spent the first month of the 2025 season with the Washington Nationals. He was 1-2 with an 11.42 ERA over the course of 8 2/3 innings. He has appeared in 13 games and has given up 11 earned runs on 10 hits. He walked 12 and struck out 10. He has a 2.54 WHIP.

Poche was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-years ago in the 14th round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of Dallas Baptist University. He was with the Diamondbacks until 2018, when he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays. He spent the last seven seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays organization.

Last season with the Rays, he was 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA. In 37 1/3 innings, he gave up 16 earned runs on 30 hits, 13 walks, and struck out 33. He had a 1.15 WHIP.

Prior to that, in 2023, he was 12-3 with Tampa Bay with a 2.23 ERA. He pitched 60 2/3 innings, striking out 61.

Poche’s main two pitches include a four-seam fastball and a slider.

After seven seasons with Tampa Bay, he was signed by Washington and spent only a few months there before electing free agency once again. The Mets have recently lost their two best lefty relievers –A.J. Minter and Danny Young- for the season.

Poche begins his tenure with the Mets with Triple-A Syracuse.

In other potential lefty reliever news, Felipe De La Cruz pitched 1 2/3 scoreless inning and hit 98 mph for Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday afternoon. On Monday, he was named the International League Pitcher of the Week after throwing six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts in his Triple-A debut.

The Mets recently also brought back veteran Brooks Raley. The 36-year-old is still out following Tommy John surgery last May.

Bullpen Roundup: Non-Tendered Players the Mets Should Pursue

Major League Baseball’s non-tender deadline officially ended at 8 p.m. Eastern November 22, sending notable players to free agency prior to the 2025 season.

From a pitching standpoint, many bullpen arms were let go, some with success in 2024 and others with success in recent seasons.

Jordan Romano

Jordan Romano‘s 2024 was forgettable. The righty struggled to a 6.59 ERA in 13 2/3 innings and then was shut down for the remainder of the season after receiving surgery to repair an impingement in his throwing elbow.

Still, the 31-year-old is only one season removed from back-to-back All-Star appearances and could be worth a flier. From 2020-2024, Romano struck out 251 batters in 200 2/3 innings, pitching to a 2.24 ERA. He was estimated to make $7.75 million by MLBTrade Rumors.

Kyle Finnegan

Kyle Finnegan‘s non-tender was shocking. The Nationals held onto the closer at the deadline in a year where the price to buy was high, then after a poor second half released the righty.

But was the second half poor enough to justify a non-tender? Yes, it really was. In 23 1/3 innings, Finnegan pitched to a 5.79 ERA, walked 11 batters, allowed three homers, and 33 hits. This came after a first half where he pitched to a 2.45 ERA and struck out 42 batters in 40 1/3 innings.

Now, Finnegan hits the open market and is available to all teams. His 1.886 second half WHIP is glaring, but would be an absolute bargain if he lands somewhere in the middle of his All-Star performance and second-half blunders, where his career 3.56 ERA and 1.319 WHIP tend to be.

Colin Poche

Another year, another arm non-tendered by the Rays. Colin Poche has become the latest victim of this cycle.

The lefty was solid in 2024, pitching to a 3.86 ERA in 37 1/3 innings. His name was rumored in trade discussions in 2024, especially among Mets fans, but he was ultimately held onto and then released.

Poche will be an interesting name of the market. He’s past age 30, but has now had consecutive successful seasons as a lefty and comes from the valuable pitching lab of Tampa. The predictive statistics weren’t good (4.88 FIP and 91 mile-per-hour average exit velocity), but the Mets are short on left-hand relievers and Poche would be a cheaper option.

Tanner Rainey

There was a time where Tanner Rainey looked like a star in the making. He threw triple digits, won a World Series in 2019, and had amassed 148 strikeouts in 100 1/3 innings.

But Tommy John hit Rainey in 2022, and it’s been lost years since. The righty missed all of 2023, and then in 51 innings in 2024, Rainey pitched to a 4.76 ERA and 1.490 WHIP.

So, an easy no. Right? Well, not so fast. Rainey had an impressive August and September, pitching to month ERAs of 2.25 and 2.00, while keeping the WHIP at 1.000 in both.

The slider was also impressive, earning a 46.3 Whiff percentage and 2295 RPM. Rainey will be an interesting flier, and could be a smart pick-up by organizations. It might not be 100 miles per hour anymore, but Rainey still has stuff that plays.

JT Chargois

JT Chargois was another premium name that was non-tendered Friday. Which shouldn’t come as a surprise, as the Mariners DFA’d the bullpen arm on Nov. 19 before the deadline.

The move cleared some money from their payroll for the next season, and with an abundance of arms on the roster, the team could afford to lose Chargois. But for all the others, another reliable arm hit the market.

Chargois pitched to a combined 2.23 ERA between the Marlins and Mariners but had concerning FIPs of 5.53 and 4.54. The 46.2 and 36.7 hard-hit percentages weren’t good either, but still wasn’t enough to hurt the LA native in season.

Regardless of predictive stats, Chargois will still be a sought-after name. The slider remains glitchy with its 2600 RPM and 33.3% whiff rate, and the 40% groundball rate will play with a solid defense behind him.

Jacob Webb

Jacob Webb was another odd non-tender. He was only projected to receive a contract worth $1.7 million and was a key bullpen arm for the Orioles.

In 2024, the righty pitched to a 3.02 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings. Webb also put up a respectable 1.182 WHIP and 3.52 FIP.

Webb is certainly a name the Mets should inquire about this offseason. His arsenal features a 94-mile-per-hour fastball that rides up in the zone, with a changeup and sweeper to get batters out. His changeup particularly was special, with batters hitting only .125 and slugging .219 on the pitch.

Morning Briefing: Evan Longoria Eyeing Retirement

Good morning, Mets fans!

In a conversation with Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Evan Longoria made it all but official that he is done with baseball. Longoria said that throughout his last season with the Diamondbacks, he had some more clarity with the situation. “And then, being able to go to the World Series, have the experience that I had, it made it a pretty easy decision for me going into the offseason,” he said.

However, he did say the door is slightly open to one final run, depending if the interested team is in contention; he also mentioned the Rays and Diamondbacks as possible options.

In his career, Evan accomplished it all except the evasive World Series win. “So if you said I would go hit .080 for the rest of the season, but the team would win the World Series, then I’d go do it,” he said. “But that’s probably about the only thing I’d want to do.”

Rundown

A 16th-round pick in 2016, Colin Poche debuted with the Rays in 2019 but missed all of the 2020 and 2021 seasons after undergoing his second Tommy John surgery. He appeared in at least 65 games in 2022 and 2023, having the best year of his career a season ago. Poche posted a career-best 2.23 ERA in 60 2/3 innings in 2023, striking out 61 batters and only allowing four homers.

The 30-year-old got off to a rocky start in 2024, owning a 6.75 ERA on April 23 before spending six weeks on the injured list with mid-back tightness. Since getting activated on June 8, though, Poche has posted a 1.15 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 15 2/3 innings while holding opponents to just a .443 OPS.

Home runs have been an issue for Poche for most of his career, including 2024, as he’s given up five long balls in 25 innings. Poche’s batted-ball data suggests he may be getting a little lucky. He’s never induced ground balls at a very high rate, and his 30.4% grounder rate is down from 33.8% a year ago. Opponents are also making harder contact against Poche, with his hard-hit rate jumping from 31.3% to 43.5% and average exit velocity rising from 87.2 MPH to 92.0.

Poche has been a two-pitch pitcher for the last two seasons, relying on a four-seam fastball and a slider. While his fastball velocity is down just over a mile per hour and doesn’t generate many whiffs, it has a plus-3 run value. His slider has been his strikeout pitch, registering a 43.1% whiff rate and 37.9% strikeout rate.

Poche has a track record of success against both lefties and righties, but he’s been torched by southpaws in a limited sample size this season, allowing a .296/.387/.556 batting line in 31 plate appearances this season. However, he’s held righties to a weak .523 OPS in 68 plate appearances.

Package

After 2024, Poche has one more year of club control before hitting free agency. It’s hard to imagine the Rays demanding a huge return for a non-closing reliever, especially one who’s already missed time this year due to injury. Poche is making $2.375 million this year and is arbitration-eligible this offseason.

In the 2022-23 offseason, the Mets swung a trade with the Rays for Brooks Raley, giving up left-handed pitching prospect Keyshawn Askew, who wasn’t ranked in the team’s top 30 prospects at the end of the year. Raley was also a controllable arm, but Poche is four years younger than Raley was at the time, which may increase his cost.

Gomez is recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he has a live arm with a fastball that can touch triple digits.

Recommendation

The Mets already made one trade this year with the Rays to acquire Phil Maton, and they could use all the arms they could get. Even during the team’s recent hot stretch, the Mets’ bullpen has struggled badly, posting a major league-worst 7.49 ERA since July 1.

With Brooks Raley out for the season, Jake Diekman has been the team’s only lefty in the bullpen for most of the year, and he’s posted an underwhelming 5.33 ERA with 22 walks in 27 2/3 innings. While acquiring Poche might not be the flashiest move, it would address the team’s glaring need for another lefty to shore up their bullpen.

Poche has been a high-leverage reliever for most of his career, and he likely will not cost much to acquire.
